2 Population : plus de 11 millions Villes principales : Dakar (capitale), Thiès, Saint Louis, Kaolack, Touba Industries : agriculture, pêche, huileries, raffineries Geography : Senegal is located on Africa's westernmost point, the Cap Vert peninsula. Gambia is a separate nation, surrounded by Senegal on three sides. History : Islam was established in the 11th century and 90% of the people are Muslim. In the 15th century various European powers controlled Senegal before the French gained possession. In 1960, Senegal gained its independence from France and acclaimed poet Léopold Sédar Senghor became the country's first president. 2
