III FREE L Ukraine Révoltée Par Matilde Alvarez Morera 14 FASNY et les Réseaux Sociaux Mise sous pression par la Russie qui cherche à conserver son influence dans la région, et malgré son penchant pour une Union Européenne croissante et avantageuse, l Ukraine souffre aujourd hui d un conflit interne qui s est rapidement propagé au rang mondial. En Novembre 2013, le président Ukrainien Viktor Yanukovich a refusé de rejoindre l Union Européenne. En même temps, il a signé un contrat avec la Russie pour une avance de 15 milliards de dollars, ainsi qu une réduction du prix du gaz naturel russe. Depuis, les Ukrainiens se révoltent. Historiquement, l Ukraine a toujours été un pays divisé politiquement, sociologiquement et géographiquement. Tandis que la partie Ukrainienne se situe au Nord-Ouest du pays (où se trouve Kiev, la capitale), le Sud-Est, culturellement Russe (y compris la langue), est plus riche, avec d importantes productions agricoles. Aujourd hui, cela fait des années que l Ukraine est en crise économique et tente de rejoindre l Union Européenne pour améliorer sa situation. Ainsi, une version très simplifiée de la situation Ukrainienne serait un combat constant entre ses relations avec l Union Européenne, ses relations avec la Russie, ainsi que le rapport que l Ukraine entretient avec son peuple. L Ukraine, comme de nombreux pays en Europe, voulait rejoindre l Union Européenne pour accéder à de l aide financière qui l aiderait à sortir de la crise. Cependant, la Russie (qui ne fait pas partie de l Union Européenne) entretenait déjà des relations économiques avec l Ukraine, qui lui vendait ses produits agricoles et achetait du gaz naturel (que la Russie possède en abondance). De plus, l Ukraine représente une barrière géographique entre la Russie et le reste de l Europe que Putin, le président russe, aimerait préserver. Mais en rejoignant l Union Européenne, l Ukraine aurait rompu ses relations économiques avec la Russie. Pour FASNY Prepares for the IB By Maddie King 14 garder son allié, le président Russe a déclaré qu il retirerait son prêt de 15 milliards de dollars à l Ukraine, en plus de la réduction des prix du gaz, et a même menacé le pays de sanctions économiques. Le Président Ukrainien avait donc refusé, en novembre, de rejoindre l Union Européenne, et ainsi d accepter les conditions de la Russie. Depuis le refus du président Yanukovich, le peuple Ukrainien est en révolte. Des milliers de manifestants, principalement de la région Nord-Ouest pro-ue, protestent devant les bâtiments Dessin par Iona Sobral publiques de la capitale Kiev. Les manifestations ont grandi en mesure et sont devenues violentes, avec des prises de bâtiments par les manifestants et des attaques violentes de la police. En janvier, Yanukovich a passé une loi réprimant toute forme de manifestation publique, ce qui a eu pour effet d enrager encore plus les manifestants. Fin 2013-Janvier 2014, les manifestants demandaient la démission du président, accusé de fraude et de corruption, et l adhésion de l Ukraine à l Union Européene. Le 20 février 2014, les manifestations les plus violentes jusqu alors ont tué envion quatre-vingt civils, et ont été rapidement suivies, quelques jours plus tard, par la disparition de Yanukovitch, remplacé lui par l ex-premier ministre Yulia Tymoshenko, elle récemment libérée de prison (où elle avait été enfermée par le gouvernement de Yanoukovitch). Survint alors le problème de la Crimée. Le 16 mars, les habitants de la région ukrainienne votent presque à l unanimité - 97% ont choisi de voter oui dans le référendum qui leur a été présenté - pour l indépendance de leur region, et rebatissent leurs liens historiques avec la Russie. Continued on Page 2 Its candidacy approved last summer, FASNY has since been working hard on the next phase of the International Baccalaureate (IB) accreditation process. If all goes well, in the fall of 2014, the International Baccalaureate Organization will send a verification team to perform a site visit at FASNY and, between February and April of 2015, the IBO will make a decision about FASNY s application. If approved, FASNY would begin during the school year to recruit interested students for the first IB class as part of the normal orientation process by which sophomores apply for ES, S, OIB, non-oib, etc. Certain steps are necessary before FASNY can officially begin integrating the IB. Most importantly, the school must train teachers for the type of work that the IB requires, develop mock schedules, and prepare a preliminary budget. Désormais, les possibilités constantes d être connecté via nos téléphones portables, nos ordinateurs, ou d autres appareils électroniques rend l envie et la volonté de se déconnecter quasi impossible. Les «jeunes» disent eux-mêmes qu ils se croient tout de même capables de vivre sans ces réseaux sociaux en permanence. Mais de ceux qui passent une à deux heures par jour en ligne à ceux qui sont constamment connectés, les réseaux sociaux ne pourraient pas faire plus d amateurs. Notre recherche a porté sur l interrogation des élèves de la FASNY allant de la sixième à la terminale. L utilisation des réseaux sociaux chez les filles de la troisième à la terminale est très différent des résultats des filles de la sixième à la quatrième. Le réseau social gagnant au lycée est Facebook, en tête avec 75% d utilisatrices. Ensuite se trouve Instagram avec 14% et, à sa suite, Skype avec 2,4%. De plus, 9% des filles utilisent d autres réseaux comme Twitter, et leurs temps d utilisation réelle penchent vers les deux heures par jour. Chez les collégiennes, Instagram remporte la palme avec 40% d utilisatrices, Skype suit avec 15%, puis Facebook avec 12%. Cependant, la grande majorité des élèves de la sixième à la quatrième n utilisent pas de réseau social. Après avoir comptabilisé les résultats des filles, nous nous sommes intéressés aux différences possibles des résultats chez les garçons. Au lycée, 74% des garçons utilisent Facebook quotidiennement et déclarent qu ils y passent entre deux et trois heures par jour. 2 2 Community Le Haut Standard de FASNY Par Amaia Pelletier 18 Les élèves de la FASNY ont toujours entendu et entendent encore dire que tous leurs devoirs, examens et tests vont éventuellement leur permettre de réussir le Brevet et, plus tard, le Bac. Mais, honnêtement, est-ce vraiment grâce à ces préparations que l on est sûr de réussir le Bac ou le Brevet? Déjà, croyez-le ou non, oui il est possible de réussir ses examens avec de bonnes ou très bonnes mentions. Par exemple, l année dernière, Marie Kenza Yousri a obtenu un score de 19,94 de moyenne générale en série S à son Bac. Elle a ainsi reçu le titre de score le plus élevé de l Amérique Du Nord. Lena Duchêne et Romane Thomas, en série ES, ont aussi atteint des notes excellentes. Ces trois filles ont d ailleurs reçu chacune une lettre de reconnaissance pour leur performance exceptionnelle de la présidente du Jury. Pour le brevet, nos plus hauts scores de l année dernière ont été obtenus par Marc Antonios avec son 18,6 de moyenne et par Capucine de Talhouet et Thomas de Villemejane, qui ont tous deux obtenu une moyenne supérieure à 18. Prenez latin, ça rajoute des points au bac! Beaucoup ont entendu cette phrase lorsqu ils devaient choisir leur option de 5e. Mais, honnêtement, le Latin rajoute-t-il des points? Et les options en général, sont-elles bénéfiques? Alors, commençons par le commencement : l année de première, les élèves peuvent choisir deux options. L option «numéro 1» possède un coefficient 2 (à l exception du latin, dont le coefficient est 3!). L option «numéro 2», elle, ne rapporte que coefficient un. Alors, prenons par exemple un élève qui choisit musique comme sa première option. Si cet élève reçoit une note de 20 en musique, alors nous prenons tous les points au-dessus de dix. Ensuite, comme l option est coefficient 2, on multiplie le score par 2. Cet élève recevra alors 20 points «bonus». De ce fait, bien que les options ne rapportent que peu de points totaux, elles servent à «franchir la barre des mentions». Pour un élève qui a, par exemple, obtenu un 15,67 de moyenne, ces petits points en plus sont vitaux, et peuvent faire la différence entre un «Bien» et un «Très bien.» Que pensent les élèves de leurs résultats? Ont-ils beaucoup étudié? Mais surtout, ont-ils trouvé les épreuves difficiles? Pour connaître ces réponses, un seul moyen : demander à un lauréat du brevet, Marc Antonios. Marc insiste que «la préparation pour le brevet est un travail constant pendant toute l année» et que ceci lui a permis de ne pas avoir «à étudier de longues heures avant le test.» Ensuite, lorsque nous lui avons demandé ce qu il pensait de ses résultats, il a tout simplement répondu : «Je suis fier de mes résultats. Avec la persévérance, on peut aller très loin.» Finalement, il a trouvé que les épreuves «n étaient pas particulièrement difficiles par rapport aux brevets blancs de l année. La réussite de mes brevets blancs était un indicateur de mes performances au vrai brevet.» Voilà, tout est dit. En bref, Marc nous explique qu avec de la persévérance et du Marc Antonios delivers the 8th grade graduation speech. travail tout au long de l année, il est possible d obtenir de bons -ou très bons!- résultats. Par rapport au Bac, certains parents de terminales trouvent que la FASNY accorde trop d importance à ce diplôme en laissant moins de temps aux élèves pour préparer leurs applications aux universités. Mais, la FASNY a pris en compte ses remarques Certes, l année de terminale est difficile, mais la FASNY a beaucoup modifié le calendrier académique des terminales. Par exemple, les DS (devoirs surveillés, sortes de Bacs Blancs) ne commencent que la deuxième semaine d octobre, et les DS le mardi de Thanksgiving ont été annulées (car honnêtement, qui a envie de passer un examen de quatre heures après avoir mangé la dinde?) Bref, la FASNY a réduit au maximum le nombre de DS, afin que les élèves aient plus de temps pour se préparer pour l université. Aussi, certains pensent que la FASNY devrait récompenser les élèves ayant obtenu des hauts scores : par exemple, meilleure moyenne générale au BAC, meil- Ukraine en crise Continued from the Front Page Quelques heures plus tard, le Parlement criméen vote en faveur de couper tout lien avec l Ukraine afin de se réunir avec la Russie de Putin, tandis que les Etats-Unis et l Union Européenne tentent d appliquer des sanctions plus ou moins sévères envers les Russes. Pourquoi l indépendance de la Crimée est-elle si importante pour la croissance économique et sociale de l Ukraine? La Crimée, ex-région de l Union Soviétique qui avait été donnée à l Ukraine et dont une grande partie de la population est d origine russe, est la région la plus prospère du pays. Un point essentiel pour le transport du gaz russe, la ville de Sébastopol est également essentielle pour les Russes, car il s agit de leur dernier grand port en mer chaude (sur la mer noire). Ce sont pour ces raisons que la Russie, qui revendique le droit de sécuriser la région et sa population russe, a envahi la Crimée en premier lieu le 28 février et tente aujourd hui de rétablir son influence dans la région en affirmant les liens avec l ex-province Soviétique. Aujourd hui, il nous reste à attendre de voir si la réponse internationale envers la prise de pouvoir russe - jusqu ici assez légère - sera suffisante pour aider les ukrainiens à apaiser leur conflit interne afin de mieux se concentrer sur la résolution de leur crise économique. Rosenblum sur ce sujet : «Je pense que l idée est très intéressante et mérite d être discutée avec les professeurs et les élèves et parents délégués. Je vois du pour et du contre.» Donc, qui sait? Bientôt aurons-nous des médailles et des trophées pour récompenser nos performances scolaires? Aussi, que pensent les terminales de l année dernière de leur score? Marie Kenza Yousri nous propose des réponses à nos questions. Mais, comment a-t-elle fait pour réussir? A-t-elle passé tout son temps à étudier? Marie Kenza répond : «Oui bien sûr j ai passé beaucoup de temps à étudier, mais je dirais que l effort de la semaine de révision et des dernières semaines en général n est pas aussi important que l effort au cours de l année. En fait, le système des Bacs blancs est assez bien fait (oui je sais que c est fatiguant, et oui je râlais aussi tous les mardis midi) en ce qu il te force à étudier régulièrement. En fait même si tu ne voulais pas du tout étudier, tu serais quand même obligé de le faire un minimum à cause des Bacs Blancs. Donc si tu tires le maximum de ce système en étudiant sérieusement chaque semaine, c est beaucoup de temps passé à étudier dans l année et finalement plutôt des révisions à la fin de l année, avec quand même moins de pression.» Elle a suivi par un commentaire à propos de ses résultats : «Au risque de paraitre orgueilleuse, oui je suis assez fière de mes résultats Mais en fait je suis surtout heureuse qu ils soient, le reflet des efforts que j ai faits, et des efforts des enseignants qui nous ont soutenu tout au long de l année. Je reste lucide, les résultats du Bac ont quand même une part d aléatoire. On peut faire beaucoup d efforts et être malchanceux le jour du Bac, par exemple tomber sur un sujet qu on a moins révisé ou un correcteur plus sévère. Je pense qu il faut faire de son mieux au cas où, pour pouvoir dire qu en tout cas on a fait tout ce qu on pouvait, plutôt que d être obsédé par la note finale.» Puis, LA question que tout le monde se pose : a-t-elle trouvé les épreuves difficiles? «En fait comme je disais plus tôt, à force de faire des Bacs Blancs, en plus de la préparation en Utah et de la semaine de révision, à la fin de l année on est plutôt biens rodés aux types Bac. Après ça peut aller de facile à difficile parmi les exercices de la même matière, selon si c est un exercice type ou plus original. Mais en général, pendant l année les professeurs ont essayé de vous préparer au pire, et on peut difficilement avoir le pire pour tous les exercices dans toutes les matières. Donc non, je n ai pas trouvé les épreuves particulièrement difficiles.» Marie Kenza tient aussi à ajouter que la FASNY lui manque, et qu elle souhaite bonne chance à tout ceux qui devront passer des examens cette année. Alors oui, la troisième et la terminale sont des années difficiles Oui, vous allez peut-être passer des nuits blanches à essayer d apprendre les cours, à ne rien comprendre en classe, à être fatigué mais, avec beaucoup de travail et d efforts, pas d inquiétude, tout le monde peut réussir.

3 Community 3 Les Mousquetaires de Larchmont Bicycle Par Louise Billault 17 A moins de 10 minutes de l école se trouve depuis 2010 un chaleureux petit commerce de vélos, au logo imaginé par l ancien élève de la FASNY Jérôme Janssens de Bisthoven ( 15), dirigé par Joëlle, française dévouée à son magasin, et son mari David. Bien qu ils ne possèdent pas d enfants scolarisés à la FASNY, le couple participe activement à l essor de nos étudiants. Leur équipe de Mousquetaires constituée de Casimir Vinciguerra ( 17), Edgar Doyet ( 17), Gaspar Alvarez Morera ( 17) et Hector Sonnois ( 17) se réunit chaque week-end pour faire rouler le magasin. Joëlle admet sans hésitation que ce sont les garçons qui font toute la bonne humeur et détendent l atmosphère les jours où nous avons des tonnes de boulot. Car, ne vous méprenez pas, la boutique à beau être un local de taille restreinte, les demandes de réparations, ventes, et locations sont constantes. Maintenant, la saison s étant calmée, David et Joëlle ne sont pas en quête d employés mais le seront à partir de mars, et tous sont les bienvenus (garçons et filles). Le petit bonus? Nutella, croissants et pains au chocolat tous les samedis Le magasin est très centré sur les élèves qui utilisent leur vélo tous les jours (discounts, distribution de sonnettes à la clientèle etc.). Les propriétaires ont quelques idées en tête et travaillent sur le développement de quatre projets qui, idéalement, devraient être réalisés dans les mois à venir: se déplacer dans les écoles primaires pour enseigner les bases de la réparation aux jeunes enfants; s occuper des vélos d étudiants en une journée (déposer son vélo le matin, le chercher en rentrant); trouver une solution au problème des vols de vélos qui restent la nuit à la gare; et la distribution gratuite de gilets jaunes. Si, comme moi, vous ne pouvez pas vous empêcher de casser un frein ou de crever votre chambre-àair arrière toutes les deux semaines (record à battre : 2 pneus, une béquille, un frein en 8 jours) alors aucune hésitation, Larchmont Bicycle réparera votre deux-roues en quelques minutes. Après s être (gentiment) moqué de vous, bien sûr. Instagram et Facebook à FASNY Continued from the Front Page Skype se trouve derrière avec 12% des utilisateurs. Mais encore, 14% des adolescents utilisent d autres types de réseaux tandis que personne n en utilise aucun. Chez les collégiens interrogés, c est Skype qui l emporte avec ses 25%, alors que 21% utilisent des réseaux autres du type messagerie instantanée ou jeux vidéo. Instagram et Facebook ont tous deux rapporté 19% des votes. 16% des garçons du collège n utilisent aucun réseau social. Nous sommes aussi parvenus à récolter certaines réponses chez les professeurs. Ces derniers ont admis, sans peu de difficulté, que leur réseau favori était, sans aucun doute, Facebook. Ce site leur permet de rester en contact avec leurs amis d université, leurs anciens élèves et la vie de leurs connaissances en général. Les élèves ont également fait parvenir leur ressenti par rapport à ces réseaux sociaux. Tandis que 79% des élèves du collège nous avouent pouvoir vivre sans réseau social, seuls 60% des lycéens pourraient s en passer. Au final, les résultats obtenus sont très différents selon l âge, le sexe et le réseau social utilisé, mais les résultats reflètent tout de même la connexion quasi permanente des élèves une idée quelque peu inquiétante. Integrating the IB Continued from the Front Page Thus, in preparation for the program eighteen faculty members, the head of high school, the head of school, the librarians, and the director of college counseling have attended IB training workshops for English literature, French literature, Spanish language acquisition, German language acquisition, European and Middle Eastern history, 20th century world history, math, math studies (a lighter math course for students who do not plan on pursuing a mathematics based career), biology, chemistry, physics, IB coordination, IB administration, IB Theory of Knowledge, IB Creativity-Activity-Service, IB Extended Essay, and IB library support. In addition, committees with parent and student representatives are currently addressing certain important concerns such as language policy, honesty and malpractice, assessment policy, and access and special needs. The last bit of the process involves advertising the different ways in which FASNY intends to continue cultivating both international mindedness and the different qualities that are integral to the IB student profile with its commitment to cultivate students who are: Balanced, Reflective Inquirers; Caring, Knowledgeable Communicators; Principled, Open-minded, Risk-taking Thinkers. This is one of the reasons why the IB is becoming more and more popular worldwide: it teaches students to be globally minded, something that will prove to be extremely valuable in a number of professional fields. IB is also known for it s rigorous curriculum that is sometimes compared to the AP in terms of higher chances of acceptance into college, and the possible award of college credit for high school coursework. In all appearances, the costs of this IB integration process are not overly burdensome, since the IB section will be populated by 11th and 12th grade students currently attending FASNY. Indeed, in the initial years at least, FASNY has no intention of admitting more new students to FASNY than it has in previous years. Of course, the budget would have to be slightly expanded to integrate and coordinate the requirements of the IB core. These costs, however, are expected to be quite manageable, said Mr. Rosenblum. So far, participants in the integration process are very optimistic. According to Mr. Lawhon, one of the IB coordinators and an English teacher at FASNY, our school s students are perfectly suited for the requirements of the IB curriculum. Of course, some concerns are being raised regarding the impacts of the IB on FASNY s dynamics as we come closer and closer to its full integration. Says Mr. Rosenblum, we do not expect the addition of the IB to affect FASNY s current dynamics. We already have OIB, non-oib, S, and ES students, and these groups function well together. Marijuana Legalization Against Why marijuana should stay illegal By Jean-Baptiste Robert 17 For Why marijuana should be legal By Mathieu Rizk 17 What is the most absurd law ever heard of in the United States of America? Quite a few of our laws grapple for top position, and the answer to this question is rather difficult to figure out. However, a few weeks ago, the Colorado State Legislature provided a very clear victor by accepting the preposterous proposition that is the legalization of marijuana. And so, accordingly, beginning on January 1st, adult Colorado residents were allowed to purchase up to twenty-eight grams of marijuana at local specialized shops. Marijuana is a drug derived from the Cannabis plant that has very serious psychological effects, but is also used to fight certain types of seizures. Since marijuana is one of the drugs most used by minors, educators spend quite a lot of time and effort warning children about the side effects of marijuana on the user s lungs and brain. Yet a single unwise decision such as the Colorado Marijuana Legalisation Bill ruins all of the educators arduous work. Though one might argue that alcohol and cigarettes are legal even while they cause more fatalities than marijuana, alcohol is most often in the form of a beverage drunk for pleasure, such as wine or beer. Cigarettes, on the other hand, are truly a problem, but they were made legal before people knew that they were harmful. When their devastating effects were discovered, there were already too many adherents for cigarettes to be peacefully outlawed. So why legalize a new, potentially harmful drug when we already have enough trouble dealing with the effects of cigarettes and alcohol? While marijuana might not have caused many casualties, it still has serious psychological consequences. In the end, marijuana remains a drug, and its negative effects on one s life are reason enough for it to definitely stay banned. The latest update on Ridgeway The laws responsible for the illegality of marijuana are by far the most preposterous and unnecessary ones that exist in the United States. Ever since Roosevelt s 1937 Marihuana (sic) Tax Act, the use of the cannabis plant has been a criminal activity, and its possession punishable by harsh prison sentences. Right there red flags ought to launch. How in the world should marijuana possession result in months, even years of prison? It is merely sensory enhancing, and is fundamentally a victimless drug. One under the influence of marijuana doesn t turn into a raging and explosive monster. Sure, it does have side effects as do legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco, but no one considers making those products illegal anytime soon. The argument against marijuana is baseless anti-legalizers go on and on about the dangers of drug abuse and the possibilities of cannabis being a gateway drug and, quite frankly, it s shameful to be putting people behind bars for something that affects only the user. Once again, my red flags are in the stratosphere. Because, after all, when you think about it, I could walk into a McDonalds and down ten hamburgers every day of my life until my high levels of cholesterol would be out the roof and I would have entirely clogged arteries, soon followed by a heart attack and my death. Doing so may be stupid, but it s my right. Here s the bottom line: one can abuse anything, but that shouldn t be a reason to be make everything illegal. Making marijuana legal shouldn t be an advertisement, and its use should definitely not be promoted, but I don t believe it ought to be frowned upon. If you haven t, well here we go: FASNY has been planning for a while now to invest in a new campus. Currently, our school is renting the buildings we work in every day The benefits of Ridgeway would be huge: amongst others there would first be the fact that the campus would be built on a golf course, so HELLO lush fields of green grass to study on! I mean honestly, picture this: you arrive at school at eight in the morning, and instead of wandering through crowded halls, you stroll through grassy fields, with little birds chirping, flying butterflies, and hopping bunnies (okay, only a slight exaggeration, but yeah) Also, the classes would be roomy and modern, meaning that the campus would also be able to welcome more students. Now, about the whole school-on-a-golf-course thing. Technically it wouldn t be a golf course anymore, since the plan is that FASNY will let all the vegetation take over (don t picture a jungle, picture more of a green garden). But, it would still be gorgeous. One more thing: the only (or almost only) way of getting to the Ridgeway Campus in the morning and leaving in the afternoon would be by riding the school bus. Everyone has a different opinion of those big yellow buses Not always positive though So, what is the good and bad in this? Well, one thing about the school buses is that parents will not be able to see each other as they drop off their kids, as was done on the previous campuses. Also, who says golf course says lots of space But around the golf course, the main architectural structures are houses and NOT food sources. The fact that there are no restaurants, supermarkets, or junk food shops around means that going into high school will have one less advantage. Indeed, at the Mamaroneck campus, high school students had lots of different restaurants to choose from, and spending their lunch outside had lots of benefits. Sadly, at Ridgeway, unless you are willing to go on a two hour exploration to find SOME lost supermarket, or old restaurant, you will not be able to eat outside. So, at Ridgeway, students will not be able to benefit from that. To solve the food issue, a solution has been brought up: a sleek, modern cafeteria with a food court. So, a cafeteria as in a legitimate American cafeteria where you could have pizza, burgers, mac and cheese, sandwiches, salads, etc. for lunch. I mean, that sounds pretty good! So yeah, Ridgeway has its pros and cons (as does everything!), but it is a great project. According to recent updates on the FASNY debate with the opponents of this new campus, Ridgeway might be able to open in September 2016

5 Opinion 5 Letter of Response From the Board of Trustees To Messenger Editorial By Mischa Zabotin, Chairman of the Board of Trustees On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I'd like to commend you on your recent Editorial entitled "With Growth, FASNY Must Maintain Identity". Your piece captures crisply the challenge that we face as we embark on this next chapter in your school's history. It is a challenge that we, the Board members, have considered deeply and continue to discuss regularly. Preservation of FASNY's identity, which you rightly anchor in "informality", is a clear objective of ours as we plan the move to White Plains. Small classrooms within small grades that share curricular interests continue to be central to our vision for the school. Perhaps some historical perspective is needed to inform this conversation. First, FASNY has grown robustly over its 33 year history. Initially, grades were added organically as founding students progressed through the school. To accommodate additional classes and grades, we added campuses, growing from a few rooms in Larchmont to the four locations (including Fenimore) that we occupy today. This growth was accomplished without diluting our identity. The addition of a complete High School five years ago could also have driven us off course, but it has only strengthened the school. The pressure of the college admissions process has not gotten the better of us either as could have easily been the case. We are proud to introduce the FASNY spirit to admissions officers across the country and abroad rather than adapting our identity to the mold to which they may be more accustomed. At the Board level, we have grappled with the real estate question for years. For some of that time, we were frankly often faced with perceived opportunities that proved either elusive, inadequate or unaffordable. We then formed a task force of trustees, administrators and parents to determine the optimal enrollment for FASNY -defined as the largest number of students we thought we could Given the truly global makeup of our student body, we already are a French-American international school. accommodate while preserving our culture. Only then did we define what kind of physical space would make sense for that size of school. Lastly, we delimited a geographical area around our existing campuses within which we felt comfortable acquiring property. Ridgeway met the criteria we had defined in the course of that exercise. Mission drove our real estate decision, not the inverse. Throughout our school's growth, thanks to dedicated and committed faculty, administration and trustees, FASNY's identity was forged into what you describe in your piece. That said, given the truly global makeup of our student body, we already are a French-American international school. We don't need Ridgeway to become what we arguably have been all along but may not necessarily have articulated. Any possible decision to include IB into our curricular offering would only be taken in a manner that is compatible with our culture and is frankly an extension thereof. As with real estate, mission and identity inform academic decisions, not the other way around. Every step of the way and in a very explicit fashion during countless Board meetings, we seek to ensure that our identity and mission anchor all of our decisions. As many of us are or were at one point parents of FASNY students, we feel that we have deep understanding of this identity. Mr. Peinado's presence at all of our meetings further ensures that we maintain this focus. But you already know that culture rests with you, the student body. You too have a responsibility to articulate the FASNY culture amongst yourselves, to share it with the many new students we welcome every year and even to convey it to new faculty. The mere fact that you've shown concern about this topic makes us feel confident that our move to Ridgeway will not cause us to stray from the culture that makes FASNY the wonderful place it is. Reprinted From October, 2013 Know thyself, Socrates once read at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. That statement was about knowledge and about identity. In the next few years, change will be coming to FASNY in the form of a new campus, a possible foray into the International Baccalaureate, a larger student body, mandatory busing at Ridgeway with very few exceptions, and even a different approach to student clubs. Business as usual at FASNY will no longer be business as usual. A lot of these changes seem great at face value. The Ridgeway campus is huge, modern, environmentally progressive, and beautiful; more kids means a booming, growing school; a unified group of clubs means better organization and increased productivity; the International Baccalaureate was something one of your two esteemed editors would have jumped at if given the opportunity, and the mandatory busing Well, not everything is so great. A shift in direction, however, can also represent a fundamental shift in identity, an inherent risk of a large swath of adjustments in the span of a few years. FASNY has always had an aura of informality tied directly with its quaint smallness. Parents build relationships as they talk while waiting to pick up their kids a process, we note, that will end with forced busing. To this day, students and parents alike can walk up to Mr. Peinado without appointment and strike up a conversation or even complain about anything that may trouble them. Students in small classrooms in grades made up of small numbers of students all going through relatively the same curriculum bond over their shared, unique FASNY experience, one that they know to be different than any other school s. The potential addition of IB raises many questions as to how that same experience can be maintained. How would we, and should we, transition from being a French-American school to being an international school? Could we possibly accept strictly Anglophone students since IB in no way requires French? Do we then lose part of what makes FASNY, FASNY? What will all of this mean for FASNY s size, since Ridgeway could absolutely handle a couple hundred more students? Isn t mandatory busing a huge concession towards a relatively minor group in the White Plains community that will do far more damage than good? We need to learn more about this policy and the reasons it has been proposed. Now, we here at The Messenger are not expressing any sort of condemnation or disapproval of any of these steps towards a new FASNY. If anything, we re excited by the prospects of it all. What we do want to express, however, is that the administration as well as the student body should be cautious about how these changes are implemented for the sake of the school s identity. If executed either too rashly or too quickly, these seemingly innocent, even exciting enhancements could swallow up the institution we have come to know over the years as FASNY. There is the risk that we become just any other big, fancy, private international school. FASNY is so much more than that. Maintaining who we are as a school is a burdensome task, but a task that the administration and the school as a whole need to see through. Know thyself, bore the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. Does smoking still sound cool? Well then I have failed my goal If you are currently emptying the last of your pack of cigarettes in the toilet, then great, I m happy for you! Apple s ipad is now in the hands of every FASNY 7 th grader. Since the fall, there have been mixed reviews about its effectiveness. The tablets helped many students and teachers become more organized and they facilitated sharing important files between students and teachers. However, to see if we have been using our ipads correctly, Head of Middle School Helaine Couty inspected a few to look at their content. On occasion some have been looking at content other than class material or taking photographs and airdropping (a method of transferring files) while in class. Anecdotally it is said that some students have not used their devices for purely academic endeavors. Some parents contend their children spend too much time with the devices. At the midpoint of this program The Messenger surveyed students about the ipad s overall utility in the classroom, asking participants if they thought that the ipad is helpful, unhelpful, or if they had no opinion. The results were the following: 20% no opinion, 22% unhelpful, and 58% helpful, demonstrating that a controlling majority believe the ipad s benefits outweigh their costs. The 58% who thought the ipad was helpful said they felt this because they believe it helps them with organization and efficiency. In addition, the ipads, many pointed out, are far lighter than traditional textbooks. However, students who thought it was not helpful said the ipad distracts, is used infrequently in the classroom or is used mostly for entertainment. The students who had no opinion believed that both sides raised valid points about both the benefits and costs of the ipad, although generally they admitted that the tablets are mostly used for gaming.

7 Arts 7 Danseur dans l âme Par Tessa Lagaüzeire 17 Pour certains, le sport est une discipline. Mais pour d autres, c est une façon de vivre. Un rêve qu ils conservent depuis leurs plus jeunes années, un objectif à atteindre qui les pousse à se lever tous les matins pour une raison bien définie : danser. Pendant des heures et des heures, des mois de travail passés sur un seul pas, une seule chorégraphie. Des spectacles chaque soir pendant plusieurs semaines. C est au milieu des douleurs occasionnelles et de la fatigue que se placent la joie et le bonheur de transmettre une passion. Certaines personnes peuvent se demander «Mais pourquoi aurait-on envie de danser, surtout pendant un temps relativement restreint de dix à quinze ans?», «Quelle est la motivation de ces personnes qui passent leurs journées entière seuls dans un studio avec leur corps et leur pieds?». Les danseuses Susan Steinman et Christina Coleman, elles-mêmes professeures de danse et danseuses à plein temps, ont bien voulu nous donner quelques informations sur leurs parcours et leurs motivations. Certains danseurs accomplis peuvent parler longtemps de ce qui les passionne le plus dans la danse. Christina Coleman admet sans hésitation que ce qu elle aime par-dessus tout c est enseigner et partager son savoir avec des jeunes de quatre à dix-huit ans. Elle nous raconte, «je passe beaucoup de temps en train Félicitations à nos artistes! Ainsi, la danse, qu on pratique pendant une heure, voire deux heures par semaine, et qui rend compte de l histoire entière d une personne, est un métier tout aussi artistique que physique. Sans donner la même impression d effort, elle reste tout aussi compliquée que n importe lequel autre sport. On s y attache, on a l impression d avoir du mal, mais au final on y parvient ; on atteint alors un sentiment de bonheur irremplaçable. 8 8 Technology Console War: Xbox One vs PS4 By Mustafa Khalil 19 Are you an all-out Xbox fan or a PS addict? Gaming addicts, listen up: Sony released its eighth and newest console, the PS4. And diehards bought over a million consoles on November 15th, the release date. Several weeks later millions more flew off the shelves on Black Friday. But the PS4 isn't the only console in stock. Rival Microsoft released its latest Xbox. The Xbox One also sold over a million on its release. Microsoft has called this latest version the Xbox One because it is all in one, meaning it has everything in it. The followers of Sony will buy the PS4 and those of Microsoft will buy the Xbox One. But their market is now those who don t have an allegiance. Hardcore gamers like to complain about graphics, but these two consoles have proven to have very similar and realistic graphics. According to Extreme Tech (a gaming site), Xbox has a faster processing chip but PS has better yet slower GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) which means that the Playstation graphics are better than the Xbox s but they work slower. Both the Xbox One and PS4 are heavier than their older versions, the Xbox 360 and the PS3, which upset a few customers. Now let's talk about the games: the reason consoles are made! Most games are available on both consoles, such as Assassin s Creed 4, FIFA 14, Watchdogs, and many more. But some games are only available on PS4: Killzone, Shadow Fall, Drive Club, Deep Down, Infamous Second Son, Tekken Revolution, Blacklight: Retribution, Resogun. And some only on Xbox One: Titanfall, Crimson Dragon, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Halo 5, Killer Instinct, Ryse: Son of Rome, Fable Legends. In this writer s opinion, the Xbox has an upper hand because of the Kinect Motion Sensor and Voice Control. Kinect is a motion sensor that has green beams that detect your every move. This allows you to play games such as Just Dance!, Zumba Rush, and fitness games without using a controller. On the former Xbox Scorcese s Masterpiece 360, there were complaints about the Kinect not working that great, so Microsoft made sure to enhance it on the Xbox One. Voice Control is like the Siri of Xbox. You simply speak to your Xbox and it turns on, plays movies, saves videos, Skypes friends, and more. Playstation has the Playstation Move, which some people compare to Kinect, but it is more like Nintendo's Wii. You have a remote similar to the Wii's and you use it to control the console. Something that Sony and Microsoft both updated were there controllers. The new PS4 controller, the DualShock 4, comes with a built in touch pad and chargeable batteries. The Xbox controller is less wide and more comfortable, but comes without chargeable batteries, and regular AA batteries in this generation are prehistoric, so you have to hand that to Sony. But gaming consoles are no longer for gaming only but for entertainment too. Both PS and Xbox allow you to have apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus... But here's the deal. You have to pay an additional $60 for these apps on the Xbox, while they come for free on PS. But Xbox now also has Skype, and has a wider variety of apps, for both music and movies. Also Xbox plays DVD's, Blu-ray, music CD's and MP3's. PS only plays Blu-ray. And Microsoft added Xbox TV guide, so now you can connect your cable to your Xbox and watch TV on the Xbox. So I've showed you all the differences, pros, cons etc. But if you still cannot chose it all comes down to one thing: the price. The Xbox is sold at $499 while the PS4 is $100 cheaper. But the Xbox also comes with Kinect and if you want the camera with the PS4 it is an additional $60, so it comes down to a $40 gap. But don't only consider the price. By Mathieu Rizk 17 In light of Martin Scorsese s latest triumph with The Wolf of Wall Street, as well as the arrest and indictment of Whitey Bulger, The Messenger reviews his 2006 Oscar-winning hit The Departed. Martin Scorsese s greatest talent as a director is his ability to make actors transcend their character from what appears on paper and his insistence on creating depth in plot and character analysis. Such qualities are obvious in his 2006 Boston crime thriller The Departed, which boasts an enthralling allstar cast of Hollywood character actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, and Alec Baldwin. Scorsese walks a fine line by having so many potentially screen-dominating characters. He manages to pull it off, though, with the help of excellent acting and an accurate script. Though this movie is based off the 2002 Hong Kong thriller Internal Affairs, Scorsese adds a another dimension that has everything to do with its setting, South Boston - or Southie. It s the area of Boston ravaged by crime and corruption, where loyalty is expected and laws neglected. From 1970 to the mid 1980s, Southie was essentially run by the mobster James Whitey Bulger, most often referred to as Whitey. For decades he ran the show, and never shied away from conflict, even if it resulted in murder. In that regard, Whitey was a typical, blood thirsty and attention seeking gangster. In reality, what fascinated people most about Whitey was his absolutely remarkable and quite frankly unbelievable relationship with the FBI s Boston Bureau. For years, the feds were after Whitey, trying to make a case against him and finally lock him up in jail for good. Yet whenever the time came to make a move, nothing happened. This bizarre reticence dumbfounded everyone, including the Boston Police Department. It wasn t until a controversial investigative piece by the Boston Globe that Whitey was uncovered as an FBI Informant, feeding information in exchange for total immunity, regardless of the crime. In The Departed, Billy Costigan, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is a young man trying to make an honest name for himself, an impossible task given his family s reputation in crime. In order to completely break off with the past, he signs up to be an officer for the Massachusetts State Police. This, however, raises many suspicions and he is summoned to the office of Staff Sergeant Dingham (Mark Walhberg) and Captain Queenan (Martin Sheen). There, they present him with a task so blindly dangerous to which only a man as desperate as Costigan would agree: going undercover to infiltrate Southie s organized crime ring. They hope to get him close Frank Costello, the character based on Bulger. In the meantime, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is moving up the ranks remarkably quickly. Unbeknownst to his superiors in the force, Sullivan is a mole who Costello trained and brainwashed from a young age. Although for some time Costigan and Sullivan go about their business, they soon become aware of one another s existence; Sullivan knows that Costello has a rat in his group, just as Costigan realizes that there is a mole in his department. From then on, it s a race to figure out the other s identity in order to get rid of him. In addition, as all great directors do, Martin Scorsese s attempts to get his whole audience to identify with the movie. In order to do so, he adds a romantic element to the storyline with a psychiatrist working in the department that finds love in Sullivan s macho appeal and Costigan s vulnerability. Scorsese also adds a comedic component (mostly dominated by Wahlberg s Dingham) that makes his audience bend over with laughter. With so much action and so much on the line, tension in The Departed is over the top and makes it an incredibly captivating and exhilarating movie. All along, The Departed wrestles with its underlying theme of the most basic trait of human nature: identity. Both men, Costigan and Sullivan, are torn because of their two different lives. They aren t responsible for their good or their bad, but being stuck where they are kills them. Despite the fantastic action and heart-wrenching outcomes, The Departed is a fascinating and deep exploration of the human psyche. On August 12, 2013, Bulger was found guilty on 31 counts, including both racketeering charges, and was found to have been involved in 11 murders.

Barthélemy À quel climat peut-on s attendre pour les générations futures? Le climat d aujourd hui résulte d une multitude d interactions telles que le rapport entre l énergie solaire réfléchie par une surface et l énergie solaire incidente, qu on nomme albédo, et la quantité de gaz à effet de serre dans l atmosphère. L influence que ces interactions ont l une sur l autre joue un rôle primordial dans l évolution du climat terrestre. Pour comprendre le dérèglement apparent du climat, il faut tout d abord analyser le rôle de l effet de serre, dont l augmentation provient, en grande partie, de l activité humaine. En effet, les gaz à effet de serre ont la propriété de pouvoir intercepter les rayonnements infrarouges émis par la Terre et les maintiennent dans l atmosphère. C est grâce à ces gaz que notre planète s est réchauffée pendant les premiers millions d années de son existence afin d accommoder la vie. Le soleil exerce donc, en combinaison avec l effet de serre, une grande influence sur le climat terrestre. Ces rayons réchauffent la Terre, mais seulement grâce aux gaz a effet de serre qui les retient dans l atmosphère. Mais l industrialisation, elle, influence directement la concentration des gaz à effet de serre en relâchant du dioxyde de carbone, des halocarbures, du méthane et du protoxyde d azote dans l atmosphère. De plus, alors que les végétaux, les océans, et le volcanisme sont des régulateurs naturels de la concentration de dioxyde de carbone (on les nomme «sources» et «puits» de CO2), ces flux sont dorénavant perturbés par les activités humaines. C est pour ces raisons que nous observons aujourd hui des températures dont les extrêmes dépassent tous les records historiques. Il est donc plus important que jamais de modéliser d une manière précise le climat de demain afin de jeter un regard par dessus la météorologie (qui n observe que les variations transitoires) et de prédire à long terme l évolution du climat terrestre. Le GIEC (Groupe Intergouvernemental sur l Evolution du Climat) a défini plusieurs scénarios, des modèles climatiques pour le futur, en prenant en compte des facteurs socioéconomiques et énergétiques. L ensemble des scénarios prévoyant une augmentation entre 1,1 et 6,4 degrés, ils diffèrent cependant dans leurs propositions de changement. Les modèles les moins polluants (B1, A1T et B2) jouent sur un équilibre entre tous les facteurs socio-économiques ainsi que la croissance démographique, orientés vers des habitudes écologiques. Les Climat: Cinéma Hollywood du type The Day After Tomorrow prédit New York plutôt inondée. plus polluantes (A2 et A1F1) jouent sur soit des développement régionaux basés sur l autosuffisance et l hétérogénéité mondiale, et donc nécessitant une intervention individuelle très importante ; soit un développement économique complètement basé sur les énergies fossiles polluantes. Le modèle le plus vraisemblable, le modèle A1B, prévoit une augmentation d environ 1,4 degrés. Ce modèle s appuie sur un équilibre entre des sources d énergies fossiles et autres (nucléaires, renouvelables ), ainsi que sur le développement de technologies modernes. 10 10 In Review (& Games) Film Review: The Lego Movie By Jean-Baptiste Robert 17 Book Review: Wonder by R.J Palacio Despite a rather childish cover, as well as a trailer that made it look like the worst animated movie to come out in roughly ten years, The Lego Movie proves itself to be one of the biggest blockbusters of Tic-Tac-Toe Riding on a tidal wave of razor-sharp wit and humour, full of satire towards modern society, carried out by a plainly remarkable cast (Will Ferrell is simply hilarious as the evil dictator Lord Business), The Lego Movie is a must-see for children as well as their parents. The only letdown about it is the ending, which is so cheesy it should be part of The Wizard of Oz, and maybe the fact that the story gets maybe very slightly confusing after some time. Despite these, The Lego Movie is a truly enjoyable watch and not, as some foreshadowed, a waste of one s money. By Chloe Durland 19 There is a saying that you should never judge a book by its cover. In this case it should be: you should never judge a boy by his face. The bestselling book Wonder portrays a 10-year-old boy named August Pullman who has been homeschooled his entire life. He lives with his parents and his sister Olivia. When told by his mother he should go to school, he becomes scared and immediately refuses. August is not like other kids he s deformed. His face looks like it has been burned in a fire, his nose is huge, his eyes are all the way down his face, his mouth is crooked, and his ears are tiny. He has trouble eating and hearing because of these problems. Eventually, to please his mom he accepts to at least go on a tour around his new school. The principal has set up some kids to show him around. They seem nice but August immediately realizes that one of the boys, Julian, does not like him. However the other boy, Jack Will, looks as if he is trying to accept August. On the first day of school the bullying begins. Julian invents a game where the main goal is not to touch August. The only friends August makes are Jack Will and Summer, a girl that decided to sit with him at lunch. Through the school year we see August put up with bullying and life problems. The author uses different points of view for the reader to fully understand the different ways in which August is perceived. The Messenger weighs on the draw and makes its predictions: Winner: Brazil They crushed the world at the Confederations Cup and their roster hasn t changed since, so who s to say their great form will slow down? I predict that the star-packed team led by Barcelona superstar Neymar will decisively capture its 6th title in front of a home crowd. Loser: Italy Cesare Prandelli s squad hasn t changed the slightest bit since its last World Cup Above: Who will end up lifting the trophy? win. More teams now threaten Italy, and its veteran players - who make up the large majority - seem slow and unorganized on the field and are still resting on their laurels from We expect them to perform poorly; being in the same group as Uruguay and England doesn t help either. Surprises: Uruguay They had a strong tournament by making it to the semis in 2010, and legitimate Ballon D or threat Luis Suarez now has an extra four years of international soccer under his belt. They re in the same group as past World cup winners England and Italy, but I anticipate the very dangerous Uruguayan team will give them a run or their money. Disappointments(Yet again): United States Quite frankly, the only things that s changed since the U.S. s dreadful 2010 appearance was the hiring of Jürgen Klinsmann, and he hasn t figured out the answer to the nagging question still on our mindsg: why is the U.S so crushingly bad? Every time the team goes into a tournament, the whole country has ridiculously ambitious expectations and a false feeling of optimism. Here s the bottom line: they re terrible and this time around probably won t be any different. A World Cup Full of Danger By Zoe Lapomme 17 Of course, the summer event of 2014 is the FIFA Soccer World Cup, where France, Belgium, the United States, Brazil, Germany, and many other teams will play for their country s glory on the soccer field. This time around, the World Cup will be in Brazil, an exciting place for such an event, where soccer fans are sure to see crazy and dedicated crowds, along with great parades and costumes to honor Brazil and its history. However, Rio de Janeiro and other host cities are infamous for their lack of safety. Sport ministers and the hosts did not ignore this fact. The issue of violence, we know it exists, stated Aldo Rebelo, a Brazilian politician. We do not have the same safety conditions on the streets as in European cities. Perhaps one of the most significant displays of this unrest was on July 7th, After having received a red card and conceded a penalty in the closing minutes of the match, Josenir Santo Abreu walked over to the referee Jordan Silva and, as players usually do, argued and pleaded that he was innocent in the accident that took place on the field. The referee didn t want to hear it, and tried to walk away. That s when the argument got physical and the player grabbed Jordan Silva. Suddenly, to the surprise and shock of many fans, the referee took a knife out of his back pocket and stabbed the player in the chest, killing him right on the spot. Players were directly pulled off the pitch as enraged supporters took over the field, beating the referee with stones and their bare hands until he too was dead. The spectators then cut off the head of the corpse and placed it on a spike, which they planted in the middle of the field. They then Above: How will safety affect the world cup? disassembled the referee s body and detached his limbs. Police arrived a few minutes later and identified the suspects easily. Another suspicious incident had occurred on June 2nd, when a friendly match between England and Brazil was supposed to take place in Rio, but was cancelled due to unsafe conditions. The Brazilian judge, Adriana Costa dos Santos, claimed that renovations in the stadium would impede the match, but the Brazilian government later declared that the stadium was fine except for some bureaucratic errors. Nobody ever gave further explanations, leaving everyone to wonder what the real problem was and whether such cancelations will take place during the World Cup as well. However, the most recent (and quite petrifying) of these events occurred in October 2013, when Brazil s most dangerous drug cartel promised a World Cup of Terror. They vouched that the dangerous quarrels taking place in the streets of Brazil would not cease for the World Cup. Released by the First Capital Command, which murdered over a hundred Sao Paolo police officers last year, the statement rapidly escalated into a real threat. A few nights later, protesters set cars on fire in Rio Janeiro and Sao Paolo. Police then intercepted messages stating that if the prison system was not changed and that accused murderers were moved to safer locations, then the mass violence would rise. In all fairness, the Brazilian national jail system is in need of change, but these actions frightened FIFA official figures more than anything else. Brazilian politicians have released statements stating that they will take measures to secure the country, firstly by raising prices for seats to the matches to ensure that not just anyone can enter. Secondly, full body checks may be required at the entry of the stadium on players, referees, coaches, security officers, and fans to make sure that absolutely no weapons will be brought in the stadium, avoiding possible accidents. Thirdly, cleared airport terminals will ensure that players can get to their destination safely. Finally, officers will be handed rubber bullets, which they will be free to use in order to maintain the calm and peace. Brazil, although a rich cultured country, is not the safest location for the World Cup to be held, but safety measures will be taken. This will of course most likely be a wonderful tournament full of twists and turns (maybe even the return of the Vuvuzela). However, after the World Cup has come and gone, the next issue will most likely be the Summer Olympic Games also hosted by Brazil. So will the danger have augmented? Only time will tell.

Par contre, depuis la Coupe du Monde catastrophique de 2010, la France a perdu son identité d élite. Mais sous l enseignement du nouvel entraineur Didier Deschamps, cette jeune équipe commence à établir une nouvelle identité, une d équipe tenace et persévérante ; et ils ont certainement démontré ces critères dans les matchs qualificatifs de la Coupe du Monde La France devait impérativement gagner contre l Ukraine pour se qualifier à la Coupe du Monde en Juin Mais après une défaite contre l Ukraine, 2-0, la France était désespérée ; aucune équipe dans l histoire du foot ne s était qualifiée en coupe du monde après avoir perdu 2-0 ou plus en match allé des barrages. Mais cette jeune équipe tenace refusa d abandonner. La France réussit à faire l impossible, en battant l Ukraine 3-0 au parc des Prince. La France a non-seulement réussi à se qualifier pour la coupe du monde, mais a aussi établi un record mondial. Mais la France avait un dernier défi à affronter. Le tirage des groupes était le dernier obstacle, et il ne restait plus qu à croiser les doigts. Above: Will France be lifting another trophy by July? Et les prières de la France ont été exercées. On se retrouve dans le groupe le plus simple de la coupe du monde, avec la Suisse, Le Honduras et L Equateur. Grace à ce tirage et cette qualification de dernière minute en coupe du monde, on peut affirmer que la France est l équipe la plus chanceuse du monde. Mes pronostiques sont que la France va pouvoir passer les étapes préliminaires étant premier du groupe. Ensuite, dans les huitièmes de finale, la France réussira à avancer, et passera en quart de finale, ou elle gagnera de justesse contre une très bonne équipe (l Allemagne, peut-être). Mais tristement, la chance de la France se terminera dans la demi-finale, ou l équipe supérieure du Brésil battra la France pour avancer en finale. Allez les Bleus!! Varsity Boys and Girls Make Playoffs in First Season By Thomas de Villemejane 16 In their first season in the Independent Schools Athletic Association, the Boys and Girls Varsity basketball teams both managed very successful seasons. The boys made the playoffs after finishing with a record of 9-5. The girls also made the playoffs, capping a 13-5 season. I am so proud of my team, said Mr. Faure, the Varsity Girls Coach. They are so smart and naturally athletic that they were able to learn how to play at a high level in very little time. Mireille Bejjani grabs the loose ball in a tight game Despite the successful season, one game in particular will leave its mark: the LFNY double-header. FASNY s boys and girls varsities both lost in a double-header to the Lycee Francais de New York Friday January 11th. A brave FASNY Girls team fell to LFNY, followed by a hard-fought Boys Varsity loss, Neither team played their best rusty from vacation, perhaps, or distracted by the loud crowd on hand for the game. FASNY bussed in two dozen fans of its own, which went a long way in both games as the Sharks tried to mount spirited comebacks. Both girls and boys kept their games close it was in the third quarter of the Boys game until the end. As of that game the Varsity Boys were 4-3 in the league and the Varsity Girls had already established themselves as one of the league s toughest teams, boasting an 8-3 record. These two teams were then already in prime position to make the playoffs, as the top four seeds of each division advance. The Varsity Boys went in as the fourth and final seed, while the Varsity Girls clinched a playoff berth early on and ended up securing the third seed. This season was a great ac complishment, as the Sharks gave themselves two opportunities to bring home a trophy. Although at least one win vs. archrivals LFNY would have been sweet, there is no denying that there is nothing better than a chance at a championship.
