Dans la compréhension écrite il faut seulement pénaliser l expression des candidats lorsque le message est difficilement compréhensible. 1. What is the historical event referred to? The event in question is the First World War / WWI. Accepter the second battle of Ypres. 2 pts 2. What do the following male characters have in common: Albert, Jack, Frank, and Bill? They are all soldiers / They are all fighting or have fought in the First World War. 2 pts 3. Focus on Bill. a) Who did he visit when he came home on leave (l.1) and what happened during this visit? (30 words) He visited his mother and decided not to return to the Front. When the Military Police came to arrest him his mother barricaded the door before he was finally taken away. 11 pts (2 pts pour Mrs Monroe / his mother + 3 pts pour chaque decision / action) b) One character witnessed this episode. What did he or she think about it? (20-30 words) Nell witnessed the scene. On the one hand she could understand his terror. 4 6. Explain how the war has changed the lives of the female characters. Give examples from the text to illustrate your answer. (60 words) As far as the sisters are concerned, they have been able to begin working outside of the home. Lillian has become a conductress (l.43) and Nell a forewoman (l.43). New horizons have been opened to them and they are blooming. On the other hand other women s lives have been destroyed by death and separation. (50 words) Frank had fully intended to tell the ladies about his war experiences. However, he found himself speechless surrounded by such a cosy / homely / neat environment.
