1 Chapter 13 Subjunctive 159 [1] SUBJUNCTIVE IN FRENCH Chapters 1 through 12 in this book deal with verb constructions in the indicative mood. The term mood describes the form of the verb showing the subject s attitude. In this and the next two chapters, you will see how the subjunctive mood enables speakers of French to express a variety of attitudes through different verb forms and constructions. a. The indicative and the subjunctive The indicative mood states facts and expresses certainty or reality. The subjunctive mood expresses uncertainty, doubt, wishes, desires, conjecture, suppositions, and conditions that are unreal or contrary to fact. The action expressed by the subjunctive verb is subordinated to a personal point of view. The subjunctive occurs much more frequently in French than in English. b. Use of the subjunctive In French, the subjunctive normally occurs in dependent clauses introduced by a conjunction containing que, by a relative pronoun (usually qui or que) or by an independent clause + que showing wishing, emotion, need, or doubt. The subjects of the two verbs are always different. Téléphonez-moi avant que je parte. Nous cherchons une secrétaire qui sache parler arabe Je doute que vous compreniez. Call me before I leave. We are looking for a secretary who knows how to speak Arabic. I doubt (that) you understand. NOTES: 1. [2] PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE OF REGULAR VERBS The present subjunctive of most verbs is formed by dropping the -ent ending of the third person plural (ils form) of the present indicative and adding the personal endings: -e, -es -e, -ions, -iez, -ent: parler finir vendre (parlent) (finissent) (vendent) je parle je finisse je vende tu parles tu finisses tu vendes il/elle parle il/elle finisse il/elle vende nous parlions nous finissions nous vendions vous parliez vous finissiez vous vendiez ils/elles parlent ils/elles finissent ils/elles vendent NOTES: 1. This pattern also applies to most verbs that have irregular forms in the present indicative. Il faut que tu mettes les bottes. Je doute que nous sortions. Il est possible que je connaisse Marc. It is necessary that you put on the boots. I doubt that we will go out. It is possible that I know Marc. 2. The nous and vous forms of the present subjunctive are identical to the nous and vous forms of the imperfect indicative, which are based on the stem of the nous form of the present tense.
