Sommaire La qualité de vie de personnes en situation de handicap en ce qui concerne activités de tous les jours, transport, emploi, et recréation est indéniablement liée à la technologie. L étude et l enseignement de ce technologie est un sujet qui peut intéresser les chercheurs actuels qui se posent des questions autour des connaissances indigènes aussitôt que des questions sur le contexte globales des productions et transfert de technologie. Les sujets sont d un intérêt traditionnel des sciences appliquées, réhabilitation, les sciences de sante, éducation et formation, et plus récemment aussi les humanités et sciences sociales. En plus, la pratique de développement et transfert de technologie est aussi d intérêt des acteurs du développement qui ont été actif dans le domaine des disciplines du handicap. Le focus de ce symposium est la production et transfert de technologie appropriée en R.D. Congo, avec un accent sur la technologie de locomotion et de transport (en particulier le tricycle) comme un exemple de technologie de base, le transfert de technologie shunt (et techniques associées des opérations chirurgicales et médicaments) comme exemple de technologie avancée, et technologie de lecture et d écriture pour personnes aveugles et malvoyantes comme un exemple de technologie d apprentissage et de communication. Les tricycles sont évidemment utilisées par personnes handicapées physiques, tandis que la technologie shunt est utilisée pour personnes avec hydrocéphalie, et la technologie pour lire et écrire (particulièrement équipement pour écrire à la machine, en utilisant la Braille) par personnes handicapées visuelles. Le développement de technologie du handicap a un component indigène et local et il fait partie des transferts globaux dans lequel la Belgique, l Afrique du Sud, les Etats Unis et l Inde jouent des rôles majeurs. Dans ce symposium nous allons collaborer avec des universités (Université de Leuven, Université de Stellenbosch, Université de Kinshasa, Pennsylvania State Université), ainsi que les ONG (IF-Child Help, PHOS, et Handicap International). Le component de développement des universités de ce symposium aura un impact sur les programmes de recherches et formation sur handicap et réhabilitation des universités collaborantes. En plus, des pratiques utilisées par les ONG en ce qui concerne la technologie, développement local et transfert des connaissances peuvent être considérées.

Abstract The quality of life of disabled people with regards to daily activities, transport, employment, and recreation is inherently connected with available technology. The study and teaching of such technology has caught the attention of scholars of indigenous knowledge as well as of the context of globalized flows of technology. The topics are a traditional concern of the applied sciences, rehabilitation, allied health sciences, education and training, and more recently also of the humanities and social sciences. In addition, the practice of development and transfer of technology has caught the attention of development actors who have been active in the area of disability for a long time. The focus of the symposium is the production and transfer of appropriate disability technology in D.R. Congo, with an emphasis on technology of locomotion and transport (in particular the tricycle) as an example of low-tech technology, the transfer of shunt technology (and associated techniques of surgery and medicines) as an example of high tech, and reading and writing technology for blind and visually impaired people as an example of learning and communication technology. Tricycles are evidently used by people with physical disabilities, while shunt technology is used for people with hydrocephalus, and reading and writing technology (in particular mechanic and electronic typing equipment, such as Braille) by visually impaired people. The development of disability technology has an indigenous and local component and is also part of global flows of transfer in which Belgium, South Africa, United States and India play major roles. We will collaborate in the organization of the symposium with Universities (University of Leuven, Stellenbosch University, University of Kinshasa, Pennsylvania State University), and NGO s (IF-Child Help, PHOS, and Handicap International). The university development component of the symposium will have an impact on the disability and rehabilitation studies research and training programs of the collaborating universities. In addition, promising practices of the collaborating NGOs in the context of disability technology, local development and transfer of skills can be reviewed. Some of the presentations in the symposium will be published as part of a new edition of our volume Repenser Handicap/Rethinking Disability.
