3 Agenda What is operational planning! Example 3

4 Context We design decision making support tools for a Distribution System Operator (e.g. ORES) who anticipates the operation of its system, e.g. one day ahead, and takes preventive decisions to grant the largest freedom to the actors of the system, while maintaining the system in the limits. The limits we consider are minimum and maximum voltages, and maximum power rating of equipments. 4

5 Why operational planning? The integration of renewable energy sources, the changing modes of consumption, and the flexibility services extracted from aggregation imply the network is redesigned, or the network is operated differently, or both. Currently, the main tools for operating the network are protections, regulating devices and reconfiguration. GREDOR aims at complementing these by preventive control and corrective control. Also, a step is needed by actors of the system to take or correct positions on short term markets, e.g. day ahead energy market, balancing market, etc. 5

Goals: take preventive actions to have the system in a secure state in real time, with sufficient margin trade off preventive versus corrective actions Available controls: regulation devices reconfiguration flexibility services! 10 Example: drop by with rebound The consumption of the flexible loads can be modulated. This modulation is defined by a modulation signal over a certain time period. 10

11 How? Solve an optimisation problem! Minimize subject to flexibility costs power flow equations operational limits constraints of flexibility services action of regulation devices This problem is solved repeatedly, over a time horizon large enough to handle the impact of the rebound effect of flexibility services and a maximum number of activations. It accounts for uncertainty. In reality, issues that are anticipated may or may not show up. Those that were not anticipated are handled by corrective control. 11
