Assuming a previous acquaintance with the basics of French, this course provides a working vocabulary and a comprehensive range of language structures. While much of the classroom work is done orally, accurate written French is emphasized throughout. Students are expected to attend the laboratory program which complements the class work and gives valuable oral practice. The class will be offered in French and in English. DELIVERY METHODS/FORMAT Three hours of class instruction per week, once a week, supplemented by weekly one-hour tutorials. COURSE PREREQUISITES Admission to the School of Liberal Arts. COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALAUTION Attendance Attendance is mandatory. A student may be withdrawn from a course if more than 10% of the scheduled contact hours are missed in any one course. Withdrawal from a course may result in loss of full-time status and loss of sponsorship funding. Attendance in class and the laboratory is mandatory. To be successful in this class, homework, including at least 5 hours of study per week, is recommended. Language There will be one hour per week in the language lab, and will be used for practice. The lab program is a sequential review of the language content of the course; it includes pronunciation and intonation exercises, grammar drills and dictations. Tests and Assignments Frequent testing will be done on grammatical concepts. The assignments from the required reader must be done and handed to the instructor for correction. Students can expect to be tested on the short stories, as well as by essay. Plagiarism Plagiarism (academic dishonesty) is a serious academic offence and will result in you receiving a mark of zero (F) on the assignment or the course. In certain cases, it can also result in dismissal from the college. And do not underestimate the impact such a situation will have on your reputation. Plagiarism involves representing the words of someone else as your own, without citing the source from which the material is taken. If the words of others are directly quoted or paraphrased, they must be documented according to standard procedures (APA). The resubmission of a paper for which you have previously received credit is also considered an academic offence.
