If you understand the roles nouns (and their accompanying baggage) play in a sentence...... you can use pronouns with ease (words like lui, leur, le/la/les, eux and elles)...... understand complicated grammatical trickery such as past participle agreement...... and write complex sentences using relative pronouns (words like qui and que, lequel, auquel, duquel, dont). As a result, your French will be ACCURATE, ADVENTUROUS and ATTRACT HIGHER MARKS (A A A!).
In the previous slideshow, we learnt how to identify the NOUN GROUP or GROUPS in a sentence. You need to be able to separate out the NOUN GROUP from other significant words such as PREPOSITIONS in order to understand what the noun s role in the sentence is. First you need to be clear about what a PREPOSITION is.
The most common prepositions in French are: À, dans, par, pour, en, vers, avec, de, sans, sous Apparently, school children sometimes learn this phrase to help remember them: Adam part pour Anvers avec deux cents sous.
après, avant, depuis, derrière, dès, devant, entre, malgré, parmi, pendant, sauf, sur à travers, par rapport, en face de, au lieu de, faute de, à destination de
Sometimes, prepositions can be longer than a single word: À côté de Au sein de Quant à (and the second set of examples on the previous slide) These are called compound prepositions (or prépositions composées, or locutions prépositives in French).
Prepositions are versatile little creatures. Here we are only focussing on one aspect of their behaviour their use in front of NOUNS and NOUN GROUPS.
Prepositions NEVER agree with any other word. Prepositions are linking devices They can be used to connect two nouns: un fer à cheval un verre à vin un arc-en-ciel une tasse de thé
They can also be used to link verbs to their noun groups. Some verbs don t need a preposition. They link directly to their noun group: Marc lit une carte postale. This is called a directly transitive verb.
Other verbs need the preposition à to link them to the noun group that follows: Marc écrit à ses amis. This is called an indirectly transitive verb
Decide whether the verbs in these sentences are DIRECTLY or INDIRECTLY TRANSITIVE (see below for reminders). Watch out for prepositions that have contracted into the article (le or les). 1. Aurélien croyait aux fantômes. 2. Je regarde deux films par semaine. 3. Les étudiants pensent à leur avenir de plus en plus. 4. Cette maison plaisait à ma mère. 5. Vous descendrez la première rue à droite. DIRECTLY TRANSITIVE = no preposition between verb and noun group INDIRECTLY TRANSITIVE = the preposition à between verb and noun group.

You should now understand how to identify the NOUN GROUP(S) in a sentence. You should also be able to recognise the PREPOSITIONS, and understand the difference between DIRECTLY and INDIRECTLY TRANSITIVE verbs. Some verbs have no noun group at all after them: Jean-Pierre travaille. Or a noun group linked by a preposition that is not à: Le chat dort sous la chaise. Les randonneurs arrivent en haut de la colline. Then the verb is described as intransitive.
