Chaque Unité comprend : le Cours, composé de o textes en anglais sur des questions de civilisation américaine o points de grammaire illustrés dans le texte qui précède des exercices d application et d entraînement, les corrigés-types de ces exercices, des devoirs soumis à correction (et se trouvant hors fascicule). Le professeur de votre enfant vous renverra le corrigé-type de chaque devoir après correction de ce dernier. Pour une manipulation plus facile, les corrigés-types des exercices d application et d entraînement sont regroupés en fin de fascicule et imprimés sur papier de couleur. Cours Pi

3 Conseils à l élève Let s travel to US! En effet, en cette année de 3 ème, le programme s intéresse à l histoire des Etats-Unis et à la civilisation américaine. C est pourquoi tous les textes proposés abordent des notions centrées sur les Etats-Unis d Amérique. Le Cours de 3 ème clôt le cycle du collège. En conséquence, les notions de grammaire regroupées dans ce Cours ont déjà fait l objet d apprentissages au cours des 3 années précédentes. Ils sont une synthèse de toutes ces notions grammaticales. C est pourquoi les exercices d application et les devoirs soumis à correction sont regroupés en fin d Unités et non après chaque notion abordée. Il est essentiel néanmoins de travailler ces parties dans l ordre donné, et de procéder à la réalisation des exercices d application puis des 3 devoirs de l Unité en fin d étude de l Unité concernée. Les corrigés des exercices d application sont donnés en fin de fascicule sur feuilles de couleur. Il est important de contrôler l exactitude de vos réponses avant de passer à la rédaction des devoirs. Chaque Unité se termine par 3 devoirs soumis à correction. Vous les rédigerez avec soin, en une ou plusieurs séances. Dès que rédigés, vous les enverrez aux Cours Pi qui les transmettront à votre professeur lequel vous les reverra corrigés et notés avec un corrigé-type. Vous prendrez alors le temps de bien regarder et comprendre les conseils et commentaires de votre professeur. Ce sont eux qui vous feront progresser. 8 THE BEGINNINGS OF THE U.S.A. 35,000 years ago Siberia and Alaska were not separated by a sea. So Asian people easily migrated to Alaska and settled there. At the time of the Spanish conquest (15 th century) these Asians were called Indians and the continent America. More recently, in 1607, an Englishman named John Smith managed to arrive to North America - where he was nearly killed by Indians - and to establish the city of Jamestown, named in honour of the British king James I. In 1620 the famous English ship Mayflower sailed from Plymouth (England) to Plymouth (Massachusets); the passengers were the Pilgrim Fathers, people who wanted to lead a very religious life in this new country. In 1775 thirteen British colonies had been founded in North America. But they wanted their independence from Britain. So, with the help of France, they fought against Britain and became independent states in 1776, on July 4 th (the American National Day ). If 6,000 French soldiers had not helped them, would the colonies have defeated Britain? The new Americans decided to elect a President and a Parliament and to call their new country The United States of America. George Washington became the first American President in 1789, the year of the French revolution. Cours Pi AN 3 U1 1

9 LE PRETERIT SIMPLE I. EMPLOI o On utilise le prétérit simple pour exprimer une action ponctuelle du passé. Exemple : Last year she went to the United States. o Il est souvent accompagné de marqueurs de temps : yesterday (hier), in + année, last + nom (last year - l an dernier), ago (il y a + expression de temps). Exemple : Christopher Columbus discovered America 500 years ago. II. FORMATION A. Forme affirmative o Prétérit d un verbe régulier : infinitif + ed. Exemple : Visit visited o SUJET VERBE AU PRETERIT... My cousin visited his American friends. The Pilgrim Fathers left England in Prétérit d un verbe irrégulier : à étudier par cœur. B. Forme interrogative AUXILIAIRE SUJET VERBE...? Did my cousin visit his American friends? Did the Pilgrim Fathers leave England in 1620? o A la forme interrogative comme à la forme négative, l auxiliaire du prétérit est toujours did ; le verbe est toujours à l infinitif. C. Forme négative SUJET AUX. NEGATION VERBE... My cousin did not visit his friends. The Pilgrim Fathers did not leave England in III. USED TO o Cette expression suivie du verbe à l infinitif insiste sur le caractère passé d une action ou d une habitude. Exemple : The Indians used to possess the whole American continent. 10 LE PRETERIT -ING I. EMPLOI On utilise le prétérit -ing pour exprimer une action en train de se dérouler dans le passé. On met l accent sur la durée de cette action. Exemple : The Indians were living in America when the Whites arrived. II. FORMATION Le preterit en ing se forme en associant : L auxiliaire be au prétérit Le verbe à l infinitif + -ing. A. Forme affirmative Exemples : It was raining The children were reading an American book. B. Forme interrogative Exemples : Was it raining? Were the children reading an American book? C. Forme négative Exemples : It was not raining. The children were not reading an American book. III. PRETERIT SIMPLE / PRETERIT -ING Exemple : The phone was ringing when I opened the door. 11 LES DIFFICULTÉS ORTHOGRAPHIQUES Attention aux difficultés orthographiques suivantes I. Y I Un Y placé derrière une consonne se transforme en I devant les terminaisons : able ed er Exemples : II. est es ly ness lucky luckier; luckily try tries; tried IE Y Devant la terminaison -ing, IE se transforme en Y. Exemple : die dying III. DOUBLEMENT DE CONSONNES Après une voyelle courte accentuée (ex : le i de begin), on double la consonne lorsqu elle est placée devant : Exemples : er est ed ing begin beginner; beginning fat fatter; fattest IV. LA VOYELLE «E» EN POSITION FINALE On supprime la voyelle e en fin de mot si on y ajoute une syllabe (ou un groupement de lettres) commençant par une voyelle. Exemple : write writing V. LA VOYELLE «O» Lorsque l on ajoute une terminaison en s à un mot se terminant par o, on intercale un e. Exemples : do does potato potatoes VI. LES PLURIELS IRREGULIERS Les noms se terminant par f se transforment en ves. 15 THE CIVIL WAR AND ITS CONSEQUENCES In the 17th and 18th centuries most rich Americans were farmers and needed workers for their fields in the South: that was the beginning of a massive importation of black slaves (esclaves) coming from Africa. In the 19th century the Northern states (états nordistes) were becoming industrialized and did not need slaves so much. Many people started thinking that slavery was immoral. For example Harriet Beecher Stowe s novel Uncle Tom s cabin (La Case de l Oncle Tom) had a great influence on people s way of thinking and converted them to the anti-slavery cause (cause anti-esclavagiste). Slaves living in the North were liberated and the government asked the Southern states (états sudistes) to free their slaves too. But eleven Southern states (in Dixie Land ) refused to obey: they owned four million slaves! They separated from the Union and formed an independent country called the Confederated States of America. The American President (Abraham Lincoln) sent an army to oblige those states to stay in the Union. That was the beginning of the Civil War (Guerre de Sécession), which lasted (durer) from 1861 until ,000 Americans were killed... The North won the war; all the slaves were emancipated in 1863 and became free in However President Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 by John Booth, a man in favour of slavery. The end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery did not mean the end of difficult times. The black Americans had now become free people but they were not equal with the Whites. A secret organization called the Ku Klux Klan - whose members believed in white superiority - started terrorizing the Blacks by burning their homes, beating them or hanging them. The Ku Klux Klan also killed the Whites who were trying to help the Blacks. Today racism is still a big problem in the United States, especially in the Southern States. Cours Pi AN 3 U1 8

16 LE PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE I. EMPLOI C est le temps du bilan, du résultat. On utilise le present perfect simple pour établir un lien entre le passé et le moment présent. Exemple : American troops have fought British troops in order to get their independence. Résultat : l indépendance américaine. Le present perfect est souvent associé aux adverbes suivants : Exemple : A. Dans une phrase affirmative : already (déjà) The President has already spoken. B. Dans une phrase interrogative o + ever (jamais) Have you ever met my cousin? o + yet (déjà), placé en fin de phrase Have you done your homework yet? C. Dans une phrase négative o + never (ne... jamais) John has never been to California. o + not... yet (pas encore) My friends have not arrived yet. II. FORMATION Le present perfect simple se forme en associant : L auxiliaire have au présent Le participe passé Exemples : He has painted the door. They have gone to Florida. o Participe passé d un verbe régulier : infinitif + ed. Paint Painted. o Participe passé d un verbe irrégulier : à étudier par cœur. III. JUST Le present perfect simple associé à just placé devant le participe passé exprime un passé très récent. Exemple : The plane has just taken off. IV. FOR / SINCE On utilise le present perfect (lien entre le passé et le présent) pour indiquer depuis combien de temps (for) ou depuis quand (since) une action ou un événement se déroulent. Exemples : How long has the U.S. been independent? It has been independent for more than 200 years. Since when has the U.S. been independent? It has been independent since Cours Pi AN 3 U1 9

17 LE PRESENT PERFECT -ING I. EMPLOI Le present perfect -ING insiste sur le déroulement d une action commencée dans le passé et souvent encore non achevée. Exemple : President Clinton has been fighting racism. La lutte contre le racisme est loin d être achevée... II. FORMATION Le present perfect -ING se forme en associant : L auxiliaire have au présent Been Le verbe -ing Exemple : It has been raining a lot. III. FOR / SINCE L action commencée dans le passé se poursuit dans le présent. On insiste sur la longueur du déroulement de cette action. Exemples : How long have you been learning English? I have already been learning English for four years. Since when has your sister been riding a bike? She has been riding a bike since her sixth birthday. IV. REMARQUE Avec certains verbes comme be / have / know / understand..., on évite d utiliser la forme -ING. Exemples : How long have you known your neighbours? I have known them for two years. 18 THE INDIANS The Indians - now called the Native Americans - were the first inhabitants of the American continent. As (= au fur et à mesure que) the first Whites were settling (= s installer) in the eastern part of North America, the Indians had to move west and abandon their territories. And yet (= pourtant) at the beginning Indians and Whites were friends. In the autumn of 1621 (one year after the arrival of the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower) the white European settlers (= colons) had nothing left to eat: an English-speaking Indian gave those colonists lessons in how to fish (= pêcher), how to hunt (= chasser), how to plant crops (= céréales) etc. A celebration was organized by the white governor to thank the Indians who had helped them to survive by sharing (= partager) with them wild turkeys (= dindes), sweet potatoes (= patates douces), corn (= maïs), cranberry sauce (= sauce aux airelles) and pumpkin pie (= tarte à la citrouille). This Thanksgiving (= remerciement) is still celebrated every year in the U.S. on the fourth Thursday of November. However (= cependant) relationships soon deteriorated, chiefly (= principalement) with the construction of the railroad (= chemin de fer) in the 19 th century. The Whites stole the lands from the Indians. You have already seen Westerns - that is films about the conquest of the West -, haven t you? The big Indian chiefs fought but were defeated (= battus). Sitting Bull and Geronimo are two famous names. Lots of Indians were exterminated: they were one million in the 18 th century and only 350,000 in Life had become extremely difficult for them: they had no freedom and were forced to live on reservations (= réserves). Today the situation has improved (= s est améliorée). The Indians started rebelling in the 1960s (= les années soixante). They are still working for their rights nowadays (= de nos jours).
