1 Financial Literacy Resource French As a Second Language: Core French Grade 9 Applied FSF 1P DÉSIRS ET BESOINS Connections to Financial Literacy Although none of the expectations in the French As a Second Language (FSL) curriculum explicitly addresses financial literacy, in each of the strands in the various courses the development of financial literacy can be fostered through both the learning context (e.g., a topic, a lesson, a thematic unit, or an issue related to financial literacy) and materials (e.g., books, websites, media). Students could address issues related to personal finances or economics from different points of view in a debate, panel discussion, role play, speech, listening, speaking, reading and/or written activities. The goal of this resource is to help students to understand the following financial literacy connections: distinguishing between "needs" and "want" acquiring knowledge in the area of spending money developing students skills in decision making learning new French vocabulary relating to "needs" and "wants" Curriculum Expectations FSL Core French - Grade 9 Applied FSF 1P Learning Goals Oral Communication - express ideas and opinions in short conversations and teacher-guided discussions Listening - understand and follow specific instructions Speaking - speak in French when working in collaborative and exploratory activities Reading - read and demonstrate an understanding of a variety of simple texts - demonstrate an understanding of articles, short stories, and poems or Lyrics, (e.g., by asking and answering questions, presenting dramatizations) Writing - create short, simple written texts in structured and openended situations - write short texts choosing vocabulary to suit the purpose. After completing the learning experiences below, students will know, understand and/or be able to: understand the difference between wants and needs; explain and defend their personal choice. 1

5 Consolidation Providing opportunities for consolidation and reflection Helping students demonstrate what they have learned COMPARER LES DÉSIRS ET LES BESOINS Description: In your new group of 4: a) discuss all the items left that represent the NEEDS and WANTS; b) discuss the items that you gave up in the first tour then the second tour; c) Categorize the items; d) Compare the needs and wants. Assessment of learning After series of prompts, students make a chart and graphic that show their understanding of the needs and wants. Each person should still receive an individual grade. Brain research tells us that when we're assessing, it is wise to re-create the learning situation. If this material was learned and practice with a partner, or with the whole class interacting with the teacher, simply having a partner allows students to more closely simulate the learning situation, and the student has an easer time accessing what was learned. 5
