8 Worksheets 4: Regardons la télé! (Let s watch television!) Look at the television schedule for Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21, on page 42. Remember that in France schedules are written on a 24-hour clock: 00 is used for midnight; 00:30 would be 12:30 a.m. All the times from 1:00 a.m. until 12:59 p.m. are written the same way as in the United States except that the French use a period instead of a colon (12.15 or 12h15 rather than 12:15). When you are reading a schedule like these TV schedules, subtract 12 from the hours to find out what time in the afternoon or evening the program will begin. On your selected site, read the letters of people seeking penpals and find someone who is about your age and who shares some of your interests. 5. Write your first letter to your new penpal. 14 Nom You and a student from Quebec are going to change places for two weeks. you are going to go to school in Canada: the Canadian student is going to follow your schedule while you are gone. prepare an information sheet for the Canadian student, who will need to know: your classes, when and where they meet and who the teachers are; how to get around your school, where the classrooms, restrooms, cafeteria and office are; and whether classes are easy or hard, whether there is a lot or a little homework for each one. 1. Fill out your class schedule. a. In the left column of the sheet, write the beginning and ending times for your classes in each box. b. Turn to page 131 of your textbook. Look at Nathalie s schedule and do the Comparaisons Culturelles activity at the bottom of the page. c. Next check the list of subjects in the Note culturelle and pick out the names of the subjects you study. If a class you take isn t listed, try to think of a different way of saying it. For example, you could say la musique for orchestra. If you need more information, ask your teacher for help. d. In each column of your class schedule, write the names of the classes for each day beside their times. e. Fill out the carnet des sujets, writing in the name of each class, the teacher, whether the class is easy or hard, and whether there is a lot or little homework. 2. Now you will need to make a map of your school to show the Canadian student how to get from one place to another during the busy school day. a. Turn your schedule over and use the back for your school map. b. Imagine that you are in a hot-air balloon, hovering over the school. In your mind s eye, remove the roof. c. Look down at your school from above; you will see the walls of the rooms as lines, the doorways as breaks in the lines. The rooms will look like squares or rectangles. d. Use a ruler to help keep your lines straight and draw the view of your school (or your wing of the school) from the air. e. Label each room where you have class. Write its number and the subject you study there. f. Label other important places in the school where the Canadian student may want to go.
