2 WORLD METEOROLOGICAL ORGANIZATION Request for assistance under the WMO Voluntary Co-operation Programme (VCP)*. WMO Member: Mali 2. National agency responsible for initiating the request: Agence Nationale de la Météorologie "MALI-METEO" 3. Title ofproject: Development of Mali of a website for the Agence Nationale de la Météorologie "MALI-METEO" 4. Purpose and description of project (project plans: activities, actions, steps or phases; and assumptions used in the project plan) This project entails the provision of weather and climate information to users through the use of information communication technology (ICT). The project aims at establishing a website for the Mali Meteorological Service. This will allow the National Weather Service to showcase its current services and encourage the development with partners of further weather and climate services. It will also significantly enhance the dissemination within Mali of severe weather warnings. It is recognized that it is necessary to have in place adequate capacity not only to generate weather and climate information, but also to ensure that these products reach the intended users. This includes warnings of severe weather. 6. Expected outcomes (Global, regional or national benefits to be expectedfrom the project) Nationally, the project will benefit the users of weather and climate information because products and services will be more readily available to the general public. Other outcomes expected as a result of the development of the website include:

3 Significantly improved provision of meteorological and climatological services to agriculture, Energy, Health, forestry, water resources management, civil aviation and the private sector including industry, commerce and public utilities; Assist in the co-ordination of research in meteorology and climatology including co-operation with other authorities in ail aspects of applied meteorological research, Assist in the maintenance of National Climatological records; Encourage the uptake of web-based technology and services within the country. 7. Nature and scope of national contribution to project, in particular as far as continuous operation of the equipment provided is concerned The VCP investment will fund the development of the website and maintenance for year. Ongoing costs after that will come from the regular budget of the Agence Nationale de la Météorologie"MALI- METEO". 8. 4 2. Reason why other sources of assistance cannot be expected MALI-METEO has been working with other stakeholders to revamp the synoptic network. It is anticipated that more weather and climate products will be available to the user community once this activity is accomplished. ln order to get these products to the intended users, it will be necessary to use ICT. But at the moment no other sources are forthcoming. 3.
