The emphasis is on acquiring all four basic language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Course expectations: EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR FRE 1131 By the end of the course, students will have developed a high beginning level of fluency and accuracy in the French language. They will be able to Use additional structures of French in appropriate situations with the objective of developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to reach the low intermediate level. Engage in basic communicative tasks in different social contexts and talk about themselves, express their feelings and opinions, talk about their plans for the future, their family and their immediate happenings Be familiar with various aspects of French culture that relate to lesson topics and engage in cultural comparisons that will enhance their critical thinking and help them overcome stereotypes. 2 Workbook & Lab Manual: Workbook and laboratory exercises (recorded on accompanying CD s) should be done regularly; the Workbook and laboratory exercises have to be handed in at the end of each unit (six units in total) as indicated in bold on the syllabus (Rendu des Exercices). They should be done seriously, written neatly, and handed in on time to receive full credit. Late assignments will be marked down a letter grade for each day they are late. Oral class participation: Participation is based on the student s participation in class drills, exercises, and memorization work. You should prepare the exercises that correspond to the previous class s grammar topics. Practice the ones that are difficult for you before coming to class. Unit tests: There will be six unit tests as indicated in bold on the syllabus. They should last about an hour. Speaking Test: Individual speaking tests will take place during regular class time Final Exam A two-hour comprehensive final exam will take place in class. This exam, although comprehensive, will stress some of the major topics from all the units (e.g., Pronoms, Conjugaison,). FINAL EXAM: Wednesday 4/29/2015, at 7:30AM to 9:30AM in Graham Center Room 279B Incompletes: ONLY given in the event of an emergency that is beyond the student s control and prevents her or him from finishing the course for which the bulk of the work has been completed. Attendance & Tardiness: Because this is a language class and course work will involve a fair amount of oral practice in class, regular class attendance and punctuality are essential. You are expected to be in class and to be prepared for class. Please turn off electronic devices during class and please do not leave during class. If you must be absent one day, you are still responsible for any homework or assignments given for the next day; please, contact us or get to know a couple of reliable students who will let you know what is expected from you.
