PIERRE BOIS
Saudi Arabia MUSIC OF c UNAYZAH an old city of the Najd he western imagination has probably T projected more fantasies on Saudi Arabia than on any other country in the Arab world. Saudi Arabia is still practically an unknown country, hidden behind conventional clichés and generally accepted notions. This is particularly true of the Najd, the historic and geographical centre of the peninsula, which has been erroneously characterized as a region populated by nomadic Bedouins whose livelihood depends entirely on raising camels. While a great number of Bedouins indeed live here, and they have played a pre-eminent role in the history and culture of the Najd, they are but one group in the population. In fact, since the first century of the Hegira (7th c. A. D.), the numerous oasis of the Najd, whose source waters are the Wadi Rimmah and its affluents, were occupied by various clans of the tribes in the region. The principal activities of these village communities were farming, local crafts and trading. Among themselves, as well as with their nomadic neighbours, they maintained a complex network of social and commercial relationships in an atmosphere of permanent competition which often resulted in armed conflicts. Finally, in the thirteenth century, after a fierce struggle between the Beni Khalid and the Subay c, the latter, who were victorious, united several villages together and founded the principality of c Unayzah 1 in the sub-region of Qasim. Other smaller towns were also established at this time: Ha c il, Buraydah, and so on. These clusters of towns became veritable cities, under the authority of a prince for whom the citizens provided the defenses. From behind their earthen walls they defended themselves against the desert world, still controlled by independent Bedouin tribes. Between these two worlds, the sedentary (hadar) and the nomadic (badâwa), a network of exchanges came to be established: farm products and crafted goods, for animals and services (caravan trading). In 1818, the armies of Egyptian ruler Muhammad c Ali Pasha marched into Najd 1. For the history and evolution of the city of c Unayzah, see Arabian Oasis City: The Transformation of c Unayzah, by Soraya Altorki and Donald Cole, 1989, University of Texas Press, 266 pp. 13
against the first Saudi state. c Unayzah was forced to pledge allegiance to Ibrahim Pasha, commander of the Egyptians forces and one of the Pasha s sons. Several years later, however, the city managed to regain its independence. During the entire nineteenth century, it was caught between the conflict for the domination of Najd which opposed the al-sa c ud and the al-rachid. Finally, in 1904, the city allied itself with c Abd al- c Aziz ibn Sa c ud, in return for the promise to preserve the dynasty of c Unayzah. For her inhabitants, c Unayzah is the mother [of the region] of Qasim (Umm al-qasim). Old travel narratives attest to the beauty and significance of this city. In the 1920s, the Lebanese writer Amin Rihani, counsellor of c Abd al- c Aziz ibn Sa c ud, nicknamed it the Paris of Najd, an expression which still holds today for Saudi Arabians. The oil boom of the 1970s transformed the appearance of the town. Now abandoned, the old part of the city was built around the mosque and the market-place, which used to be the largest in Najd. From this centre, narrow shady streets spread out like spokes into the quarters where houses were built. These mud-brick dwellings, two or three storeys high, pressed closely in on one another and hung over the small alleyways, creating a cool, intimate atmosphere. Although only ruins are left of the old sections of the city, the inhabitants are nonetheless attached to the idea of preserving a more intangible, but perhaps more essential, heritage in the Arabian peninsula, namely, melodic poetry which is sung. Perhaps by preserving this ancient heritage of nomadic wisdom, they give priority to an innate oral culture, rather than to the materiality of things. Najd has been recognized as the cradle of classical Arabic poetry, and also of the nabatî, popular dialectical and sung poetry, which originated in pre-islamic times. Because of the long isolation of Najd over the centuries, the nabatî survived along with Bedouin oral traditions, and was thus not sanctioned like music and dance under Islam. It has been classified into several genres. Today it is still considered one the noble arts, like war. In the nomadic world, the music which is associated with this poetry is characterized by an almost economic simplicity in melody, rhythm and instruments (the rabâb bowed lute). In the urban areas, and probably from various exterior influences (from Iran, India and Africa), it has acquired a sophistication particularly obvious in the sâmrî of c Unayzah. Simon Jargy 2 has subdivided the nabatî into three major categories: 2. See Anthologie musicale de la péninsule arabique, vol. 1: Poésie chantée des Bédouins, a CD from Archives Internationales de Musique Populaire, Geneva, 1994, VDE
Cantillated or chanted poetry, performed a cappella by a poeter-singer (sha c er). Singing accompanied by the rabâb bowed lute 3. Rhythmic poetry in stanzas, performed in solo by a sha c er, or by a chorus in a responsorial and/or antiphonal form. The recordings on this CD are taken from the third category. Sâmrî The word sâmrî is probably taken from the verb samara, which means to stay up talking all night, spend the evening in company. Other terms come from the same family, for example the samar, which is a nocturnal conversation or an evening during which stories are told, or narratives or tales are recounted, but it also refers to a syllabic genre of Bedouin sung poetry. John Lewis Burckhardt, in his narrative of his travels at the beginning of the 19th century among the Bedouins of Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, gives the following description: The Arabs have different national songs. Those of the women are called asámar 4. On occasions of feasts and rejoicings, the women retire in the evening to a place at some small distance behind the tents. They divide themselves into choruses of six, eight or ten women: one party begins the song, and the other in turn repeats it 5. It is interesting to notice that this description of the samar given by Burckhardt corresponds quite closely to the sâmrî, with the exception that this latter genre, in an urban setting and more particularly at c Unayzah, is sung exclusively by the men, accompanied by drums. The term sâmrî thus designates a collective musical session in which songs belonging to diverse poetic and musical genres of the nabatî are performed; but it also means a poetic genre which can be sung in solo or in chorus according to the circumstances. The sâmrî (musical session) presented here are drawn from four genres: the sâmrî (poetic genre), the hûtî, the nâqûz and the sâmrî tarq tâwîl. By all accounts, in the past the sâmrî was associated with the zâr, a possession ritual brought in by black African slaves, the usage of which spread throughout the Arabian peninsula. Some oral traditions report that when a person had been stung by a scorpion, it was necessary to keep him awake until the healer could get there by, and this was done by singing sâmrî to him. One cannot help comparing the scorpion sting with possession, a phenomenon observed in many parts of the world. 3. 16 But whatever the specific cultural functions, here the sâmrî will be considered as an entertaining, musical, poetic and choreographic manifestation. In the past, this manifestation took place on Thursday evenings, the eve of the holy day. Today the ritual is most often organized for marriages, for certain religious feasts and for an exceptional family or social events. The singer-drummers kneel down facing each other in two rows, each holding a twoheaded frame-drum (daff) by means of a wooden handle. The chief of the sâmrî begins the song by intonating the first hemistich of the poem, which is repeated successively by each row. While the song is being sung, one of the rows begins to beat their drums in a majestic fashion. Once the rhythm has been established, the other row, still kneeling down, then begins a very slow and impressive dance. Punctuating their movement with loud drum beats, the dancers lean to the left, to the right, backwards, then stand up, raise their instruments above their heads and lower them slowly, as they stretch out full length on the floor. Watching the performance of this hieratic and spectacular choreography, both actors and spectators seem plunged in the same movement into a world in which the sacred and the profane become intermingled. example of a sequence 16 From time to time, a member of the audience, captured by the rhythm, stands up, enters the empty space separating the singers, bows down in front of one of the drums and then begins to dance, a reminiscence perhaps of the possession dances of the zâr.
The arrangement of the singer-drummers can be modified during the course of the evening. For some of the songs they regroup into a U shape: two rows of singers face each other, and the group of drummers arrange themselves in the far end. Thus, from song to song, from rhythm to rhythm, from dance to dance, the evening advances, moving on to poems of love and nostalgia, praises of beautiful women and nature, and the sufferings and hopes of the lover who has been left all alone. Repetitive and haunting, the melodies follow the slow movement of the celestial vault, as actors and audience alike are given over to the same contemplative fascination. Working songs The two working songs which conclude this CD illustrate what Simon Jargy has written: To my knowledge, there are no work songs, to speak of, in the popular poetry of the eastern Arab world. This is not to say that the men and women who work do not sing (...). But the literary theme of these songs is not intended to stimulate work, or to insist on how hard it is (...). Here, only the melody seems related to work, while the literary content can just as well be a theme about love, war, or even a political subject 6. These two songs are indeed lyrical songs, and only the rhythms, especially in the hoeing song, are connected to the movements of the workers. The recordings The texts of the six songs recorded for this CD are love songs. This choice was made by the musicians and represents the predominance of this particular theme in popular Arab poetry, declined in all its permutations: falling in love, impossible love, the separation of the lovers, nostalgia, and so on. This is because in societies in which marriages are subject to strict kinship systems, with arranged marriages and priority given to marriages between parallel patrilineal cousins, romantic love songs illustrate the quest for an impossible ideal a perfect theme to inspire poets La poésie chantée au proche-orient, Paris, Mouton, 1970, p Cf. Lila Abu-Lughod, Veiled Sentiments: Honor and Poetry in a Bedouin Society, University of California Press, 1986, p
1. Sâmrî: Saqa sowab al-hayâ Poem by Muhammad bin La c bun. The poet laments the loss of his wife, who died while he was doing his pilgrimage to Mecca The same line is taken up a cappella by group A Then by group B. The plenteous rain has watered a grave on the heights of the Hijâz. The perfume of lavender and of bukhturi fill the air, as the young gazelles graze And the solitary doves 8 are singing Across the hills and valleys. May the prayer of God and his grace be upon those who have obtained his mercy. This pure woman shunned the evil places and the paths of sin. She was a beautiful woman, aloof, wise, imposing, one of those who gives an example for others. On her cheek, a beauty spot, Like an engraving on an antique medallion. In the translations, we have retained the pattern of the verses in two hemistiches, because this form is necessary to structure the musical performances. The eighteen singer-drummers kneel in two rows facing each other (group A and group B) The song begins with a melodic exposition of the first hemistich of the first verse, sung in a very ornamental style by the chief of the sâmrî At the next repetition of this first hemistich, the singers in group A attack the drums in an aksak (limping) rhythm in 5/8 time; the melodic line, falling into this rhythm, becomes more simplified. 8. Ra c abiyat, lit., female doves which have lost their mates. 18
1 02 The same text is taken up by the singers in group B, still accompanied by the drummers in group A on the same rhythmic cycle The movement reverses. The singers in group A take up the melody again, on the second hemistich, accompanied by the drums in group B, but this time on a 6/4 rhythm, which establishes the rhythmic pattern on the song. The drummers in group A then perform a kneeling dance, holding their instruments, punctuating certain of their movements by joining in with the rhythm being beaten by group B (1 32, 1 55, etc.), while one of them exclaims exhortations from time to time (2 14 ). The song continues in this way, alternating between the two groups, with the rhythm continuously struck by group B, as the drummers in group A carry on with the dance. Each hemistich of the poem is thus repeated six times, in the following order: A-B-A-B-A-B. 19
8 39 The dance breaks off, and the drummers of group A join group B. This musical bridge prepares the reversal of roles which follows next he movement now reverses, and group A beats the rhythm while group B performs the drum dance Group A, now beginning the conclusion of the song, starts to pulse the beat. This sâmrî is thus built on a group of binary oppositions which affect all the contitutive elements: poetic (two-hemistich verses), spatial (two half-choruses facing each other), musical (alternance of the half-choruses, odd rhythm/even rhythm), choreographic (rhythm/dance), in a broad pattern of successive overlappings which might be diagrammed as follows: 2. Hûtî: Amshî fî suq (Anonymous) Yesterday in the suq, a gazelle crossed my path in little streets I don t know, and if I ever knew them I d forgotten. I dare not name her, or the place, for fear that I will be obsessed by them and that slanderers might recognize her house. 20 We met by chance, the suq was empty, and she listened to all my words of love. You take the place of all those I have ever loved and lost, Be kind to me, who have abandoned all for love.
This hûtî, shorter and more rapid than the preceding sâmrî ( q = 200), is accompanied on the drums to an aksak rhythm 7/8 ( q. q q ). It presents the same general structure as the sâmrî: a cappella introduction, alternance of the two half-choruses, but in a simpler overall pattern, since group A beats the rhythm while the dance is performed by group B throughout the song. back. The drummers then divide up again into two groups of three, and while one strikes an isochronic rhythm to a very rapid tempo, the other beats a wahda rhythm: 3. Nâqûz: Yâ dhâ al-hamâm (Anonymous) O melodious turtledove whose song brings tears to my eyes You caused me to remember times long gone and love whose paths I had forgotten. Passion leaves deep marks, oh my people, may God refuse his mercy to those who reproached me for it. Do not awaken separation in the memory of the sorrowing I hate being apart, I do not want to talk about it or even remember it. My people reproach me for it, they do not know that fire burns the foot of the one who walks on it. This song requires a different arrangement among the musicians than in the two preceding songs. They split up into three groups, with two rows of singers standing up, facing each other, with the six drummers at the 21 This time, the drummers begin, followed by the soloist who intonates the first verse, which is taken up and repeated by each of the rows, then they go to the next verse, and so on. 4. Sâmrî tarq tawîl: Sara al-bârq alle (Anonymous) Lightning has shattered the night. For two centuries there hasn t been any. Wholesome is the lightning and the rain that beats down on the traveller in the night. On a high place overlooking the valley, the torrent rushes down the slope the water birds are singing by the side of a puddle. In this place lives a gazelle who knew me and denied me and each time I think of her, I say to myself, God is great! She comes close, with her dress decorated with cardamon-seed designs, her lovely features, neither wide nor thin.
[The colour of] her neck is like the radiant full moon, Great is God who created her and excelled in His creation. I contemplate the nape of her neck and when she turns around unawares, She stands straight and tall like a sapling where there is no wind. Her wound has healed, but mine has not. She thinks that time will heal me, it will not. With very few differences, this song presents the same structure as for the first sâmrî, namely a solo introduction, then the a cappella chorus, the slow tempo, the first rhythm played on the drum (but here in 3/4 time), followed by the main rhythm in 6/4, the alternated repetition of each hemistich and the alternation of the drum dance between the two rows. 5. Song for sorting grain (Anonymous) High hill on the plain, may the clouds water you in the evening. Hill where those who pass pitch their tents, among them a gazelle with long tresses wearing a sign. This sign was a bell on her ankle and tattoos on her forehead, for those who love. After the exposition of the first hemistich by the soloist, the chorus alternately continues with the rest of the poem, repeating each hemistich several times, while the soloist encourages the singers.
6. Weeding song (Anonymous) O wolf, whose howling has seized me, before you howled I had forgotten my friend. I do not know if he went back to his own home or if he stayed with Ibn Hamid. At our [last] meeting, he held out his hand to me and said, Good-bye, you who are what is dearest to me And I waited, a month passed, and [now] I can drink again with pleasure, my thoughts are peaceful. As long as I am capable of loving, His eyelashes will never leave my memory. May God turn away from whosoever forgets those who love him, How could I forget the one I love so much? I have wept so much over my friend May God take away my eyesight if I don t weep. This song, performed a cappella, is both responsorial (soloist/chorus) and antiphonal (two half-choruses). Each verse is sung first by the soloist, then a part of the chorus sings the first hemistich three times and the rest of the chorus answers with the second hemistich, then the soloist sings the second verse, and so through the whole song. Each hemistich corresponds to a minimal musical unity, repeated throughout the song. The melody develops within a very narrow ambitus (a fifth) and is built on a cycle of three measures in 4/4 time.
