Although much of your report will be in English, prepare a summary in French which will include the person s description, country of origin, age, likes and dislikes, and statistics. Also prepare five questions in French that you would like to ask this person. a few possibilities: Dikembé Motumbo basketball player MC Solaar rap artist Léopold Sédar Senghor poet & politician Oumou Sangaré singer Youssou N Dour singer Papa Wemba singer Materials: a poster board, colored pens, scissors, glue or tape, library and/or Internet access Preparation: Decide which person you would like to research. Split the tasks involved in this project. Research that person on the Internet and in the library. Look specifically for the information necessary for your report. Look for appropriate pictures and photocopy or download them for use on the poster. Prepare a report in English about the person. Prepare in French the material you will need for the poster. Have your partner edit the material. Decide which pictures you will put on the poster and begin a layout. Write captions for those pictures. Oui, je... p. 58 Work with a partner to prepare a series of meaningful personal questions that can be asked of classmates about their lives in order to discover interesting facts. Materials: index cards, pens or pencils Preparation: Work together to prepare a series of ten personal questions for an interview. Group your questions around various themes like family, hobbies, skills, travel, etc. and, as part of the set, prepare some follow-up questions. Ex. Est-ce que tu travailles? Où est-ce que tu travailles? Quand est-ce que tu travailles? Be sure that you can answer your own questions. Write your questions on index cards. Practice asking and answering your questions with each other. Work with another pair and ask the others your questions. Using almost only question words, fire simple questions at your partner who will answer each question with a bit of information. (Ex. Qui? Jean-Marc. Quand? En été.) Take notes as your partner answers the questions. After you have asked all your questions, put together the story that you think your partner has in mind. 5 Nom Change-of-Pace Activities Activité 1 Phrases rallongées (extended) Work with a partner. First, individually write three or four simple statements. (Ex. Je dîne au restaurant.) Then, take turns with your partner and see how far you can expand the sentence by adding a single element. Ex. à six heures. Je dîne au restaurant à six heures. avec Julien. Je dîne au restaurant à six heures avec Julien. Activité 2 Jeu de dominos Work in groups of three or four. The teacher will give you a set of slips of paper that will serve as dominoes. Distribute the dominoes three each among members of the group and put the rest in a pile. The first player will lay down one domino, earn a point, and take another domino from the pile. The next player must lay a domino that fits against the domino on the board, on either side. If so, s/he wins a point and takes another domino. If not, s/he loses the turn and gains no points. Continue until all the dominoes are played and there is a highscoring winner. Then pass your cards to another group who will take turns and attempt to answer your questions. When the questions have been answered, that group will pass the set of cards to another group. Continue until each group has seen all the cards. Then one person from the original group will read the questions and call on individuals in the class to answer them. Line up with the other students to form a continuous chain of questions followed by the correct answers. When the line is complete, read your questions and answers aloud in order. 7 Nom Activité 5 Jeu de répétitions Work in groups of three or four. The first person makes a statement in French about something s/he does. The second person changes that sentence with tu by way of repeating the information and adds a statement of his/her own. The third person now needs to repeat the first sentence using il or elle, repeat the next sentence using tu, and add his/her own. Continue with each player reviewing two prior sentences and adding his/her own. Activité 6 Tapez sur la carte! Work in groups of three or four. The teacher will give you a set of cards to spread out on a table in front of you. Listen carefully to the teacher s questions, then slap the card that correctly answers that question. 8 Unité 3 Leçon 8 Nom Activité 7 Le jeu des personnalités Work in groups of three or four. You will need nine index cards. Brainstorm and list on an index card eight famous people to whom you would like to ask questions. Then write down one question per celebrity on the eight remaining index cards. Hand your stack of cards to another group. That group will try to match a celebrity to each question, answer the question in the way they think the celebrity would, then write down the answer on the back of the question card. When all have finished, the cards will return to the original group who will read the questions and answers aloud. p. 64
