(McDougal Littell, 2004) Binder (provided the first day) for notes, assignments, work in progress, and course materials: Supplemental readings and other handouts Course description and objectives Description: This is a three-credit college course. UConn ECE is a concurrent enrollment program that allows students to receive both high school and college credit for this course. The credits earned transfer into UConn and many other institutions. Grades below a C are listed as audit, showing only that the student has attended the course. UConn ECE students are nondegree Uconn students and are eligible for a variety of university benefits. Objectives: This is a composition course, as well as a review of grammar. You will review and learn new grammar, produce lists of vocabulary, and practice specific structures and words in your writing. You will read different types of texts (poetry, children s book, fable, short stories, song lyrics, film reviews, articles, slam) and study their functions and techniques. You will learn specific writing skills, such as taking notes and writing or imitating numerous genres: a narrative, a letter (between two characters), an editorial, a journal, a summary (from a short story character s perspective), a cultural comparison (between a work of fiction and your experience), a short persuasive essay, a conversation (based on songs, between you and vocal artists), an article (from a historical perspective), a poem (apostrophe), a portrait (of a film character), a reading response (comparing film reviews), and an extended persuasive essay about a contemporary topic (based on assigned readings). Regular activities and assessments include: completing reading assignments; doing grammar exercises and practice; creating, studying, and practicing vocabulary lists; producing and submitting at least two versions for each assignment (one or more drafts with peer and/or teacher edits; and one final version); taking quizzes and exams. Preparation and participation Preparation: This class will require substantial independent preparation and learning. You must study and prepare materials on your own before class so that we can use class time to practice and master the language skills and structures. Prepare questions about

2 anything that you don t understand before class. Expect to spend at least hours preparing for each class session: reviewing the grammar, vocabulary, and notes from the previous class; studying new material; and doing the assignments for the next class. This course will require a minimum of 4 6 hours of work outside of class per week. Success in this course will require frequent (=daily!) studying, memorizing, and practice using the language! Participation: Regular oral and written practice is essential for improving proficiency in a foreign language. Attending class and participating actively on a daily basis are necessary for success. It is very important that you speak French at all times in class, even when working in pairs and groups. Your participation grade will be based on your attendance and on your willingness to push yourself to participate actively in class activities. Required writing assignments French writing tasks: French 3268 is a writing-intensive course. There will be frequent writing assignments and tasks. You will need to write and revise a minimum of 15 pages during the course. Final paper: You will be assigned a 1,500-word/5-page paper at the end of the year. A passing grade on this final writing component is required in order to pass the course. Required final exam All students must take and pass a written final exam at the end of the school year. Plagiarism and academic honesty policies Written assignments that you submit in this class must be entirely your own work. Using Google translate constitutes plagiarism. Should you need to perform research for a class assignment, you must appropriately cite the work consulted (INCLUDING INTERNET RESOURCES), using quotation marks, in-text citations, and footnotes and/or bibliography in the correct MLA format. If you have any questions, please see me. Grading Components: The course will focus on grammar (acquisition and application in speech and writing) and writing (with peer editing and revising). The grade will be based on preparation for class and homework completion, active class participation, quizzes and tests, oral performance tasks, and written performance tasks (including peer editing and revision). UConn grade: You may notice that your high school and UConn grade differ. It is possible that two different grades can be awarded for the same course. Your high school grade is determined by your high school. Your UConn course grade is determined by the grading rubric set by the University department.
