3 Selected Topics in Canadian HIS 3375A History Material History and Material Culture in Canada This course will explore Canada s history using material history methods and material culture research. Using inter-disciplinary approaches including, but not limited to archaeology, art history, Indigenous studies and museum studies, students will examine and contextualize artifacts and objects to learn about Canada s past. The course will follow a thematic approach that includes a consideration of pre-contact material cultures, New France, British North America to the twentieth-century. Students will be introduced to digital tools to display artifacts and to systematically analyze sources and objects relevant to Canada s material past. Students will have opportunities to visit and become familiar with collections from institutions like the Canadian Museum of History, the Canadian War Museum, the Museum of Science and Technology and the Library and Archives Canada. Students will evaluate, interpret and create history through their course work throughout the session. This course will be taught with a blended learning model, including some flipped classes where students will watch relevant tutorials and lectures related to key concepts and then trouble shoot and collaborate in-class and using Adobe Connect. (C) Prerequisite: 12 credits in history including 6 credits at 2000 level. HIS 4397A Seminar in Europeen History Postwar Europe and its Borders: A History of Migration and Integration The immediate postwar political and economic landscape greatly impacted the way migration to Europe developed, from labour recruitment programs and postcolonial migration to increased numbers of refugees and the harmonization of EU asylum policies. This seminar aims to highlight the ideas, institutions, and actors that have influenced the evolution of migration in postwar Europe. (E) Prerequisite: 81 university credits. Reserved for students registered in the Honours with specialization, Joint Honours or Major in History. 3

Selected Topics in Contemporary HIS 2351 A History The Genocides of the 20th century. Survey of the history of the genocides of the 20th century (The Armenian genocide, The Holocaust, The Cambodian and the Rwanda genocides). The course aim to explore the social, political and economic reasons that led to genocide and to familiarize the students with the most important historiographical debates surrounding the discussed issues. 6 HIS 4135A Seminar in Canadian History Immigration and Ethnicity in Canada This course will explore the history of immigration in Canada, focusing on the period between Confederation and the Canadian Multiculturalism Act of This course has been organized thematically and examines issues such as historical trends, the impact of Canadian and international immigration policy, the migration process, the immigrant experience, and domestic issues. (C) Prerequisite: 12 courses in history including 6 credits at the 2000 level.
