2 Edito Depuis un an, La Mamounia a déployé ses ailes, trouvé ses marques, et s est tournée vers de nouveaux horizons entre Art et Culture. En effet, la fin de l année 2010 a été riche en évènements d envergure : la remise du premier Prix Littéraire de La Mamounia décerné à Mahi Binebine, expositions de La célèbre artiste contemporaine Carole Bellaiche, le deuxième défilé de la Fashion Days avec de prestigieux stylistes nationaux et internationaux et enfin le partenariat avec la 10ème édition du Festival International du Film de Marrakech. Bouquet final, pour la dernière nuit de l année La Mamounia a ébloui tous ses hôtes par un spectacle alliant la haute gastronomie française et l univers féérique de la Comédie Musicale Américaine «Best Of Broadway». Musique, littérature, mode, peinture, arts de la table sont réunis dans l antre du savoir-vivre... Jacques Brel a dit : «La Mamounia reste toujours le rêve civilisé qu on souhaite croiser plus souvent». Over the last year La Mamounia has been a shining star, spreading its horizons to the world of Arts and Culture hosted many prestigious cultural events - La Mamounia Literary Prize was presented to Mahi Binebine, the artist Carol Bellaiche exhibited her famous contemporary art, the 2nd Fashion Show welcomed national and international acclaimed designers and finally, the 10 th Marrakech International Film Festival, a dazzling evening combining the gastronomic heights of French cuisine with the magic of American musicals Best of Broadway. Music, literature, fashion, painting and the art of entertaining are entwined in a celebration of the good life. 5 PERSONNALITÉ Fatima Zahra EL MANSOURI, Maire de Marrakech La mythique Marrakech est, pour la première fois, de son histoire dirigée par une femme. Madame El Mansouri fait pour nous le bilan d une année d activité et nous dévoile son projet politique pour la suite de son mandat où une place prépondérante est réservée au social et à l amélioration de la qualité de vie des habitants. Ma réussite aux élections est le fruit d un engagement militant et d une conviction profonde, de servir le développement de ma ville natale. En effet, en tant que Marocaine, Marrakchie, j estime qu il est de mon devoir de contribuer à cette dynamique de bonne gouvernance insufflée par Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed VI. Le Parti Authenticité et Modernité (PAM), auquel j adhère, est porteur d un projet dans lequel je me reconnais. Il a donné la parole aux jeunes et aux femmes. Plus que donner la parole, il a fait confiance à cette jeunesse militante. Vous venez de fêter le premier anniversaire de votre élection, quel bilan en tirez-vous? Extrêmement positif. Une première année de gestion communale consiste essentiellement en la mise en place d outils et de réflexes de bonne gouvernance. A côté de cela, une réflexion stratégique concrète, afin de servir au mieux les intérêts de la ville et de sa population. Une gestion transparente nous a permis d améliorer les finances de la commune nous permettant de déclencher les projets structurants. Quels sont les grands axes de votre politique pour la suite de votre mandat? Notre politique place l humain au centre de l action, en améliorant la qualité de la vie quotidienne du citoyen, et en offrant des opportunités d avenir à la jeunesse de cette ville. Aussi, nous considérons qu il est indispensable d offrir des équipements culturels et sportifs accessibles au plus grand nombre dans le cadre d une politique de proximité et accompagner l animation de ces équipements par une société civile dynamique à Marrakech. L environnement est également au cœur de nos préoccupations. La préservation de nos richesses naturelles et le maintien d une qualité de l air est, pour nous, indispensable pour l avenir de Marrakech. Une politique de lutte contre l habitat insalubre, l encouragement à l accès à la propriété en grand nombre, figurent parmi nos priorités. Aussi la dimension aménagement et gestion urbanistique est prise avec la plus grande vigueur afin de préserver ce cachet de Marrakech qui en fait une ville d exception. Dans notre réflexion, une grande 14

6 attention est consacrée à la création de nouvelles zones d activités économiques. Marrakech se développe de plus en plus sur le créneau du tourisme de luxe grâce à l apport de capitaux privés. Mais ce secteur est très exigeant en matière d infrastructures de qualité. Quels sont les projets de la ville dans ce domaine? En effet, Marrakech vit essentiellement du tourisme, mais aujourd hui, Marrakech est une destination pérenne qui a pu subir les effets de la crise économique internationale. Néanmoins, il faut consolider cette destination internationale notamment en diversifiant les produits qu elle offre : la création de musées, l accompagnement d évènements majeurs, la bonne gestion du déplacement, la création de centres de loisirs et d équipements dédiés au tourisme d affaires, la mise à niveau des espaces verts et la préservation de son patrimoine s inscrivent dans notre plan stratégique. Marrakech a acquis aujourd hui une renommée qui la place parmi les grandes destinations internationales. Contrairement aux autres villes ayant un statut similaire, la mairie communique très peu. Pourquoi? Cette première année, la communication a été essentiellement axée sur notre travail et nos résultats en tant qu équipe dirigeante. En effet, à notre arrivée, il n existait pas de cellule dédiée à la communication, ce que nous mettons en place avec l accompagnement de professionnels. Quel regard portez-vous sur La Mamounia, fleuron de l hôtellerie de luxe internationale, dont vous êtes un des actionnaires? La Mamounia est bien plus qu un hôtel, c est une véritable institution qui contribue au rayonnement de la ville. 15

Ms. El Mansouri reviews the past year s activities and unveils her political project for the rest of her mandate where a large part is reserved to improving the residents quality of life. My success at the elections is the result of active commitment and deep conviction to serve in the development of my native city. As a Moroccan, Marrakchie, I feel it is my duty to contribute to the dynamic of good governance inspired by His Majesty, King Mohammed VI. The Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM), of which I am a member, is pursuing a project that I believe in. It has given a voice to young people and women. More than just giving a voice, it has faith in this militant youth. You recently celebrated the first anniversary of your election. How do you assess the results so far? Extremely positive. A first year of community management essentially consists in implementing the tools and reflexes of good governance. Besides that, tangible strategic analysis is necessary in order to serve the city and its population s best interest. Transparent management enabled us to improve the community s financial situation, which allowed us to launch structuring projects. What are the main lines of your policy for the rest of your mandate? Our policy places the human being at the heart of the action, improving the citizen s daily quality of life and providing opportunities for the young people of this city for the future. Also, we believe it is essential to provide cultural and athletic tools to as many as possible within the framework of a policy of proximity, and support the establishment of these tools by a dynamic civil society in Marrakech. The environment is also a central concern. Preserving our natural resources and maintaining air quality is essential for the future of Marrakech. A policy of fighting against an unhealthy habitat, encouraging access to ownership by many is among our priorities. Also the development and urban planning aspect is taken with the greatest vigour in order to preserve the character of Marrakech, which makes it an exceptional city. Our plan is to focus much attention to creating new zones of economic activity. 16

8 Marrakech has been developing increasingly as a niche for luxury tourism with the contribution of private capital. But this sector is very demanding with regard to quality infrastructure. What are the city s projects in this area? It is true that Marrakech lives essentially of tourism. But today, Marrakech has become a perennial destination that has been able to bear the effects of the international economic crisis. Nonetheless, this city has to become established as an international destination, particularly through diversification of the products it offers: the creation of museums, support for major events, good travel management, creation of leisure and equipment centres dedicated to business tourism, the implementation of green spaces and preservation of its heritage all fall within our strategic plan. Marrakech now has a reputation placing her among the great international destinations. Contrary to other cities with a similar status, the city hall communicates very little. Why is this? This first year, communication has been essentially focused on our work and results as a management team. In fact, when we arrived, there was no communication division. We have put one into place with support from professional. What is your opinion of La Mamounia, the jewel of international luxury hotels, of which you are a shareholder? 10 Mahi Binebine remporte le prix de la Mamounia 2010 En pleine saison des Prix Littéraires parisiens, la Mamounia décerne son Prix Littéraire 2010, pour sa première édition. Fidèle à son image de palace prestigieux, tout, dans le nouveau prix est prestigieux, le jury, la sélection des œuvres en compétition et même la dotation au lauréat. Texte : Patrick Niclot - Photos : La Mamounia Guillaume Durand, président du jury nous éclaire sur les délibérations de ce premier Prix Littéraire. Que pensez-vous de ce 1 er cru des écrivains marocains francophones, malgré une sélection assez disparate: romans, essais, nouvelles? Quand on m a donné la liste des livres, je me suis rendu compte, que «Le livre imprévu» est plutôt un journal et ce n est pas du même ressort «Qu un an chez les français», qui raconte l histoire de la vie d un enfant dans un lycée français au Maroc. Je pensais, qu on aurait pu donner un prix roman et un autre lié aux essais. Mais l argument qui m a été opposé, puisque moi j étais pour les deux catégories c est celui de l efficacité. Un prix naît, si on commence à le donner à deux livres, on va perdre le fil et donc il vaut mieux le donner à une seule personne. Comment se sont passées les délibérations pour l attribution du prix? Le jury est composé de gens finalement assez différents : chanteurs, écrivains, universitaires, gens de la télévision. Nous nous sommes retrouvés là. On ne s était pas vu, pour certains on ne se connaissait pas. Chacun avait lu les livres. Une espèce de sérieux s est imposé, tout le monde a donné son point de vue. Il y a eu une conversation générale, ça nous a permis de parler de littérature dans son ensemble. On a parlé de toutes les questions du Maroc d aujourd hui. Je suis le président du jury, mais mon rôle sert surtout à mettre de l ordre dans les conversations. Ça n est pas une suprématie éditoriale sur les autres. J ai beaucoup aimé. Ça a duré longtemps, dans une certaine qualité d écoute à mon avis très satisfaisante, puis on a voté. Voilà on a un lauréat. L unanimité a-t elle été facile à faire. Combien y a-t-il eu de tours de scrutin? Il n y a pas eu d unanimité, il n y en a jamais dans ce genre de choses. Ça n a pas été violent. Il n y a pas eu de consensus. Il y a eu deux tours ou même trois. Mais ça n était pas gagné d avance. Pour des gens qui avait des sensibilités différentes ça s est passé d une manière extrêmement honnête. Au fond on a beaucoup appris les uns sur les autres. Il y a toujours des a priori. Les auteurs marocains ont des a priori sur des gens de télévision qui viennent de France, l inverse peut être vrai. Des chanteurs par rapport aux écrivains et tout ça s est très vite évanoui. Il y a des prix où les gens se battent, là finalement il n y a pas eu de bataille. Ce qui est différent à Paris, c est que le milieu littéraire est souvent marqué par des détestations profondes Donc, on vote en opposition à quelqu un? Mais au delà de l opposition stylistique, on ne vote pas pour mais on vote contre quelqu un. Prenez des gens comme Marc Lambron et Philippe Djian, ils se haïssent. C est un petit exemple mais ça a toujours existé dans l histoire de la littérature. Je ne sais plus si c est les frères 19

11 EVENEMENTS Goncourt qui avaient dit de Proust «c est un chat siamois dans une loge de concierge». Ici, j ai senti des différences mais pas de rivalités ni de méchanceté. Donc les gens ont joué le jeu? Oui les gens ont joué le jeu. Le plus important c est que ça permette de parler de la scène littéraire marocaine. LAYLA CHAOUNI Le point de vue d une éditrice marocaine membre du jury Que pensez-vous de ce premier cru des écrivains francophones? Beaucoup de bien, j ai été agréablement surprise par le niveau de la sélection. Tous aussi bien les anciens que les nouveaux. Des gens comme Tahar Benjelloun qui sont des confirmés ou Safia Azzeddine qui commence ou Hayat Elyamani. Les confirmés tirent les autres vers le haut. Ce qui m a un petit peu dérangé c est que ça n était pas le même genre. Le fait qu il y ait du roman, de la nouvelle, de l essai? On a débattu sur le fait de donner un ou plusieurs prix. Finalement on a opté pour un seul. En terme d image, c est beaucoup plus fort. Dans la sélection, 70% des auteurs sont édités en France. Est-ce une obligation? Non pas du tout, j ai édité Mohamed Nedali et j ai vendu les droits pour la France. Le système fonctionne aussi à l inverse. La France n est pas mon marché. Le plus intéressant pour moi est que le livre circule et que je le vende dans d autres langues et dans d autres aires géographiques. Pour l année prochaine des changements à apporter. Pourquoi pas une ouverture universelle pour le jury? C est un début, et tout ne peut pas être parfait, mais ça a le mérite d exister. Pour nous éditeurs, c est superbe. Je vous rejoins dans ce que vous disiez, l Afrique noire est très importante. MAHI BINEBINE Pour l enfant de Marrakech que vous êtes, quels sentiments retirezvous d être le 1er lauréat du prix littéraire Mamounia 2010? Extrêmement flatté, d abord parce la Mamounia fait partie de mon enfance. J ai eu pour ce roman le prix de l Institut du Monde Arabe à Paris J étais content. Mais recevoir ce prix, chez moi, par un jury prestigieux, je suis beaucoup plus heureux. Est ce que Mahi est un auteur engagé? Engagé, oui sans doute. Les événements que je raconte sont un prétexte, ce qui m intéresse vraiment c est la littérature. Je dis ce qui ne va pas. Je n aime pas la littérature engagée parce que je la trouve très souvent ennuyeuse et partisane. Tout vous réussi, peintre, sculpteur, écrivain, y a-t-il autre chose? J ai commencé par être musicien. 12 EVENEMENTS Je rêvais d être chanteur de charme mais je n avais pas les atouts. Prof de maths de formation, je voulais devenir artiste. J ai rencontré des gens fabuleux comme l écrivain espagnol Agustin Gomez-Arcos qui m a poussé à écrire, il a corrigé mon premier livre «le sommeil de l esclave», et m a trouvé un éditeur. Il m a présenté ses amis, des peintres qui m ont ouverts les portes de leurs ateliers. On naît artiste, mais on apprend à le devenir. Vous faites beaucoup pour aider les jeunes créateurs? Quand on a 20 ans, on bouillonne de l intérieur, on a envie de crever le plafond et on est impuissant. Moi, j ai trouvé des gens qui m ont tendu la main. Maintenant, après 30 ans de carrière, je peux donner la main aussi. Dès que je sens qu il y a du talent, une envie de faire, alors je rembourse un peu de ce qu on m a donné. Vous êtes l initiateur d une opération qui s appelle «le pied à l étrier», de quoi s agit-il? Avec plusieurs artistes et mécènes, on a décidé, pour la 1 e année, de choisir 2 ou 3 artistes, de leur donner une bourse de 8000 DHS par mois et de les inviter pendant 3 ou 4 mois à «El Makam», résidence d artistes située près de Marrakech. Avec Morabiti, Belkaya et le peintre Yamou on va les épauler, leur ouvrir nos ateliers et leur donner des conseils. Au bout de 3 mois, on leur organise une exposition dans une galerie où on invitera nos collectionneurs et nos amis. C est notre façon de leur mettre le pied à l étrier. Belle initiative. Quels sont les projets de Mahi Binebine? D abord un nouveau roman qui sera publié en septembre prochain. Et la peinture qui me prend beaucoup de temps. Plusieurs grosses expositions d une quarantaine de toiles: l Atelier 21 à Casablanca, la biennale du Caire et Berlin début janvier. Puis les foires internationales : Madrid, Dubai, Singapour. C est une année très chargée. 22

14 Mahi Binebine wins The 2010 La Mamounia Prize Amidst the Parisian Literary Prize season, La Mamounia awarded its 2010 Literary Prize for its first edition. True to its image of a prestigious luxury hotel, everything in the new prize is prestigious, from the jury, selection of works in competition to the award bestowed to the winner. Texte : Patrick Niclot - Photos : La Mamounia Guillaume Durand, President of the jury, enlightens us on the recommendations for this First Literary Prize. What do you think of this first selection of French speaking Moroccan writers, despite such a disparate selection: novels, essays, short stories? When I was given the list of books, I realized that Le livre imprévu is more a short story and is not in the same category as un an chez les français, which tells the story of the life of a child in a French lycée in Morocco. I thought that we could have given a prize for novels and another for short stories. But the argument against this, since I was in favour of two categories, is effectiveness. A prize is created. If we start to give it to two books, it will lose its effect, therefore it is better to give it just to one person. How were the deliberations conducted to award the prize? The jury is comprised of quite different people: singers, writers, academics, television personalities. We found ourselves there. Some had never met. Everyone had read the books. The atmosphere was serious. Everyone gave his or her point of view. There was a general conversation, which allowed us to talk about literature overall. We talked about all the issues in Morocco today. I am the president of the jury, but my role is mainly to make order in the conversations. It is not an editorial supremacy over the others. I enjoyed it a lot. It lasted a long time, and there was quality in what was being said, which I found very satisfying, and then we voted. Now we have a winner. Was getting unanimity easy to come by? How many polls did you need to obtain it? We did not get a unanimous vote. There never is for this kind of things. It was never violent. There was no consensus. We had two or three polls taken. But the outcome was known until the end. For people with different sensitivities, it happened in an extremely honest manner. In fact, we learned a lot about one another. There are always preconceptions. Moroccan authors have preconceptions of television personalities from France and the opposite can be true. The same goes between singers and writers, but all of this quickly vanished. There are prizes where people fight, yet here there was no battle. What differs in Paris is that the literary world is often affected by deep hatreds. Therefore, we vote to oppose someone? But beyond the stylistic opposition, we don t vote for, rather against someone. Take people like Marc Lambron and Philippe Dijan they hate each other. This is a small example, but it has always existed in the history of literature. I don t remember if it was the Goncourt brothers who said of Proust: He s a Siamese cat in a lodge. Here, I felt differences, but not rivalries or meanness. Then the people joined in? Yes, the people joined in. Most importantly, it allowed us to talk about the Moroccan literary scene. 15 EVENEMENTS What do you think of this first selection of Moroccan writers writing in French? A lot of good. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of the selection the new as much as the old. People like Tahar Benjelloun who are established or Safia Azzeddine or Hayat Elyamani who are debuting. Those who are established pull the others upward. What bothered me a little is that they are not the same type. The fact that there are novels, short stories, essays? We debated over giving one or several prizes. In the end, we opted for just one. In terms of image, it is a lot stronger. In the selection, 70% of the authors are edited in France. Is this required? Not at all. I edited Mohamed Nedali and sold the rights for France. The system also works in reverse. France is not my market. What is most interesting for me is for the book to circulate and to sell it in other languages and geographical regions. What changes should be made for next year? How about a universal opening for the jury? It s a beginning, it can t all be perfect, but it deserves to exist. For us editors, it is excellent. I agree with what you were saying. Black Africa is very important. MAHI BINEBINE As a child of Marrakech, how do you feel about being the 1st winner of the 2010 La Mamounia literary prize? Extremely flattered, first because La Mamounia was part of my childhood. I received the prize of the lnstitut du Monde Arabe in Paris for this novel. I was happy. But receiving this prize, here at home, from a prestigious jury makes me even happier. Is Mahi a politically committed actor? Committed, yes indeed. The events I describe are a pretext. What really interests me is literature. I say what 26

16 EVENEMENTS is going wrong. I don t like political literature because I often find it boring and partisan. Everything you touch is a success painting, sculpture, writing is there anything else? I began as a musician. I dreamed of being a crooner, but I didn t have what it takes. I trained as a math teacher, yet I wanted to be an artist. I met incredible people, such as the Spanish writer Agustin Gomez-Arcos who pushed me to write. He corrected my first book Le sommeil de l esclave (The sleep of the slave), and found me an editor. He introduced me to his friends, painters who opened the doors of their studios to me. You might be born an artist, but you learn to become one. You do a lot to help young talents? At the age of 20, you boil inside, you re ready to burst out, but you re powerless. In my case, I found people who lent me a hand. Now after a 30-year career, I can also lend a hand. As soon as I sense talent and a will to work, I give back a little of what was given to me. You started an operation you call le pied à l étrier (on your way). What does it entail? With several artists and sponsors, we decided for the 1st year to chose two or three artists, give them an a grant of 8000 DH per month and invite them for three or four months to El Makam, a residence for artists located near Marrakech. With Morabiti, Belkaya and painter Yamou, we will support them, open up our studios and give them advice. After three months, we will organize an exhibition in a gallery, where we will invite collectors and friends. This is how we send them on their way. Wonderful initiative. What are Mahi Binebine s projects? First a new novel that will be published in september. Painting also has been taking up a lot of my time. Several large exhibitions of nearly 40 paintings; the studio in Casablanca, the biennial event in Cairo and Berlin in early January. Then the international fairs in Madrid, Dubai, and Singapore. This will be a very busy year. 28

17 EVENEMENTS Le Festival de Marrakech, un grand parmi les grands! Pendant 10 ans, le cinéma mondial a pris ses quartiers d hiver à Marrakech. Pour cette dixième édition la magie a encore opéré avec plus de vigueur que d habitude. Cette fois ce fut vraiment un aréopage exceptionnel des divas du 7 e Art. C est par ces mots que John Malkovich, le Président du jury a clôturé cette dixième édition du Festival International du Film de Marrakech. Il nous a révélé quels sont, pour lui, les éléments qui font un bon film. «Il y en a plusieurs : l écriture est très importante, la qualité de l histoire, et la manière de raconter ce qui se passe. Bien sûr, il y a l image, mais ce n est pas primordial pour moi. J ai toujours pensé que l importance de l image était surestimée. Il y a 50 ans, peut-être elle avait alors beaucoup d influence, mais depuis, nous en avons vues tellement Je ne crois pas au pouvoir de l image. C est une partie de la force d un film, mais ce n est pas le plus important. C est l histoire qui est fondamentale. C est la raison pour laquelle certaines personnes peuvent suivre une histoire sur une caméra de surveillance pendant une heure. 18 The Festival of Marrakech, In a Category of its Own! For the past ten years, world cinema has been drawn to Marrakech during winter. For this tenth edition, it has worked its magic yet again, and with more intensity than usual. This time, it was truly an exceptional who s who of divas from the world of cinema. With these words, John Malkovich, President of the Jury concluded this tenth edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival. He revealed to us what he believes are the criteria for a good film. There are several: writing is very important, the quality of the story and the way that it is told. Of course, there is the image, but this is not essential for me. I have always thought that the significance of image was overestimated. Fifty years ago, perhaps it had a lot of influence, but since then, we have seen so many I don t believe in the power of image. This is one part of a movie s strength, but not the most significant. The story is the most fundamental. This is why certain people can follow a story on a surveillance camera for an hour. Tout avait commencé neuf jours plus tôt, où lors de la cérémonie d ouverture un hommage solennel a été rendu à Daniel Toscan du Plantier, l homme grâce à qui le festival existe, puisque c est lui qui l a créé en 2001, alors que personne n y croyait. Mélita, son épouse nous fait part de son émotion : «Je crois qu il était présent parmi nous à chaque instant puisque tout le monde parlait de lui, tout le temps. Cette année ressemble vraiment à ce qu il espérait du festival de Marrakech, c est-à-dire un cinéma pointu pour la compétition, un cinéma d auteurs et en même temps de grandes personnalités, de grands cinéastes du monde entier : les frères Dardenne qui sont belges, Kurozawa le japonais et en même temps, Scorsese et Coppola. 20 Keanu Reeves best films are those that make you want to know what is going to happen. This year, the festival s theme was Movies of tomorrow. The official selection presented fifteen films that are first or second films and represent 15 countries. Everything began nine days earlier, at the opening ceremony, where an official honour was awarded to Daniel Toscan, the man who founded the festival in 2001, when no one believed in it. Mélita, his wife, describes his feelings: I think he was present among us every moment because everyone was talking about him at all times. This year truly resembles what he hoped for from the Marrakech festival, in other words movies specifically for competition, cinema of authors, and at the same time, great personalities and great film-makers from the world over: Marion Cotillard 33

21 EVENEMENTS Le deuxième temps fort de ce festival a sans conteste été l hommage rendu au cinéma français. Hommage parfaitement justifié comme nous l explique Son Altesse Royale le Prince Moulay Rachid, Président de la fondation du festival : «nous rendons hommage au cinéma français qui constitue, par excellence, l enfance même du cinéma depuis qu un train entrant dans la gare de la Ciotat a donné pour toujours le départ du spectacle cinématographique». La délégation française réunissant plus de 44 réalisateurs et comédiens, était conduite par le cinéaste Costa Gavras, président de la Cinémathèque française. Cet hommage a été suivi de la projection de «un balcon sur la mer», dernier film de l actrice et réalisatrice française Nicole Garcia. Martin Scorcese et Mélita Toscan du Plantier La soirée s est poursuivie par une brillante réception qui s est déroulée au Palais Souleïman tout illuminé de rouge pour l occasion. Les quelques 700 invités ont été accueillis par Sidney Toledano, Président de Christian Dior Couture. Sur les remparts étaient projetées les images des derniers défilés Dior. On a remarqué la présence de grands réalisateurs et, de très nombreuses stars élégantissimes habillées par Dior parmi lesquelles Marion Cotillard et Guillaume Canet, Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Rampling, Sophie Marceau et Christophe Lambert, Maggie Cheung, Mélanie Doutey, Marina Hands, Elsa Zylberstein, Aissa Maïga et Yousra. Sans oublier John Malkovich, Matt Dillon, Jermaine Jackson, Lambert Wilson,Gael Garcia Bernal et Jean Dujardin. Ainsi que la visite spéciale et très remarquée de la sublime Eva Mendès qui a déclaré avoir voulu pendant des années assister au Festival de Marrakech et être profondément désolée d avoir dû décliner l offre de faire partie du jury pour des raisons de tournage. Selon la profession, le Festival de Marrakech qui a maintenant atteint sa maturité, a réussi à trouver sa place dans le calendrier des grands festivals du cinéma internationaux. 34

The second highlight of this festival was undoubtedly the tribute to French cinema. This is perfectly justified as explained by His Royal Highness, Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the festival s foundation: We honour French cinema, which represents par excellence the origins of movie making since a train entering the station of Ciotat has forever contributed to the origin of cinematographic spectacle. Alors les expositions s enchaînent dans les salons et des prestigieux hôtels parisiens, les commandes viennent essentiellement du Moyen Orient, mais aussi d Espagne et des Etats-Unis. Il se spécialise dans la création de robes de soirée. Elie Abdul Ahad Elie Abdel Ahad is a young designer who started designing at the age of 16. He began working in the family business in Lebanon and later, in partnership with his brother Georges, also a designer, he started to export his own brand. His collections are shown in prestigious Paris hotels while his main clients are from the Middle East, Spain and the United States. He specialises in evening dresses. 42

En 1998, il signe sa première collection qui rencontre un succès immédiat. Les créations de Christophe sont aujourd hui distribuées aux quatre coins du monde. Toutes revêtent un style coloré et sexy chic, véritable retour à la dolce vita. La jeune actrice Hafsia Herzi porte du Guillarmé. Eric Tibush Né en 1972, il est originaire de Corse. Il est vite remarqué par Jean-Paul Gaultier et intègre sa célèbre Maison de Couture avec en responsabilité, les défilés à l étranger. Eric Tibusch décide de créer sa propre maison de couture en juillet Attaché aux traditions et aux techniques des artisans de la Haute Couture française, il est convaincu qu il existe une couture moderne et abordable, qu il aime qualifier de «jeune couture». 44

Frédérique Birkemeyer est native du Maroc, pays où sa famille s établit en Elle est attachée à la tenue traditionnelle, revue et corrigée au goût du jour. Un évènement riche en émotions, qui sera renouvelé chaque année afin de favoriser et mettre en valeur le savoir-faire de l artisanat marocain. Frédérique Birkemeyer Frédérique presents a feminine and oriental collection beautifully combining modernity and oriental traditions. Her caftan dresses and gandouras are real jewellery artefacts with Swarowski crystals and Moroccan embroideries. Like any piece of jewellery, each outfit has its own pattern, shape, and specific cut in rich and noble fabrics, silk, chiffon, and velvet. Frédérique Birkemeyer, born in Morocco where her family settled in 1902, is very fond of the traditional dress with a modern twist. This emotional event will be happening every year in order to promote and highlight the expertise of Moroccan craft. 46

He believed in the young stylist s creative genius and encouraged him to start his own couture house and took care of raising the necessary funds to finance the operation. Between the two men, things are clear. Yves would take care of design and Pierre would handle management. Over the years, this would lead to the luxury empire we know today. In a few sentences, in his last book, Yves Saint Laurent, A Moroccan Passion, Pierre Bergé describes their first discovery of Morocco and the ensuing consequences. It is on board and Air France aircraft, after a stopover in Tangiers that Yves and I landed in Marrakesh In February Of course, we stayed at La Mamounia, which at the time was an outdated hotel with a great past. De là, date notre passion marocaine.» Ils y reviendront régulièrement, car Yves, originaire d Oran en Algérie, y retrouve les couleurs et les senteurs de son enfance. Ensemble, ils découvriront et aimeront profondément le jardin Majorelle qui deviendra le but de leurs promenades quotidiennes. Lorsqu ils apprennent, en 1980, que le jardin va être rasé pour y construire un hôtel, ils en font l acquisition «pour le sauver et continuer l œuvre de Jacques Majorelle». Leur attachement pour ce lieu et cette ville grandit encore. Yves Saint Laurent y venait deux fois par an, pendant plusieurs semaines pour y dessiner ses futures collections d été ou d hiver. Pendant ce temps, Pierre Bergé se consacrait à la rénovation du jardin et à son embellissement. Il transforma l atelier de Pierre Majorelle en musée d art islamique où il exposa leur richissime collection personnelle composée de tapis, d armes et de bijoux somptueux. L ancienne maison du peintre devint leur résidence et c est là que le soir après les longues journées de travail de l un et de l autre, ils recevaient leurs amis intimes. Le jardin et sa villa devinrent à la fois un lieu d inspiration et de création et un espace de villégiature où n étaient reçues que des personnalités de l entourage proche. On y vit souvent Louise de la Falaise ou Catherine Deneuve. Toujours discrètement, car Pierre Bergé est un mécène sans ostentation. 34 the sales agreement we had signed to purchase a home in the Medina Dar el Hanch the house of the serpent. This is when our passion for Morocco began. They returned regularly because Yves, who originated from Oran, found there the colours and scents of his childhood. Together, they discovered and fell deeply in love with the Majorelle Garden, where they would end up on their daily walks. In 1980, when they found out that the garden was set to be razed and replaced by a hotel, they bought it to save it and continue the work of Jacques Majorelle. Their attachment to this place and this city grew even more. Yves Saint Laurent travelled there twice a year and would spend several weeks designing his future summer or winter collections. During this time, Pierre Bergé devoted his time to renovating the garden and embellishing it. He transformed Pierre Majorelle s workshop into a museum of Islamic art, where he exhibited their fabulously rich personal collection comprised of carpets, weapons and magnificent jewels. The old painter s house became their residence and this is where they would entertain their close friends in the evenings after long days of work. The garden and its villa became both a place of inspiration and creation, and a vacation resort where only personalities from their close entourage would be welcome. Louise de la Falaise and Catherine Deneuve were often spotted there. Always discreet, as Pierre Bergé remains a patron without ostentation, he purchased the Librairie des Colonnes in Tangiers, formerly owned by the Editions Gallimard. 35 HISTOIRE des Colonnes ancienne propriété des éditions Gallimard. Fidèle à ses amours de jeunesse, car Pierre Bergé a été libraire, il entend redonner tout son lustre à cette maison. Après avoir été entièrement restaurée, la librairie a été inaugurée le 16 décembre dernier. On y trouve des ouvrages en quatre langues française, anglaise, espagnole et arabe dont certains sont des raretés qui n existent plus qu en quelques exemplaires dans le monde. En 1994, il participe avec Line Renaud à la création de l association de lutte contre le sida «SIDACTION» dont il deviendra le président en 1996, poste qu il occupe encore aujourd hui. Sidaction est l une des principales associations de lutte contre le sida en Europe. Depuis quelques années, il a étendu son action au Maroc à qui il a fait don de l usage du nom Sidaction. Il est l un des co-organisateurs, en partenariat avec la chaîne de télévision marocaine 2M, de la collecte de fonds 2010 destinée à venir en aide aux malades atteints du sida. Tous les biens qu il avait en commun avec Yves Saint Laurent ont été donnés à la fondation PB-YSL installée à Paris dans les locaux de l ancienne maison de couture. Cette association a pour vocation de perpétuer l œuvre d Yves Saint Laurent et par ses actions de favoriser l émergence de jeunes talents.
