2 Summary In modern supply chains, specialized companies called third party logistics providers 1 (TPLs) realize a growing part of the logistics and supply chain functions. In parallel to this evolution, traditional manufacturers have raised their willingness and readiness to develop partnerships with those companies. For most TPLs, and in particular large and international ones which provide transnational logistics services, it has become crucial to adapt their business system to this partnership context. The pressure to do it effectively and efficiently is strong because of the tight margin prevalent in the sector and the central role of logistics in the globalized new economy. Understanding the mechanisms that determine TPLs performance in logistics partnership and translating it into an integrated strategy is thus a key challenge for the management of TPLs. Yet, there is insufficient literature on the topic. In this context, the thesis analyzes the strategic adaptation of third-party logistics providers in a partnership context and provides an approach that centers on the internal determinants of business performance and integrates the fundamental capabilities, the key competences, and the organizational and technological resources of TPLs. The conceptual approach builds on contributions taken from the literature on strategy, industrial marketing and purchasing, and logistics management. A logistics partnership is defined as an exchange relationship in which two legally independent partners are mutually committed to work towards a common, specific mid-term or long-term goal; they commit themselves to dedicate specific resources to its achievement, to tightly integrate a significant share of their processes, and to fairly share the benefits of the partnership. The theoretical framework hypothesizes that TPLs are engaged in dynamic and interactive relationships with their customers and that their performance is determined by their abilities to generate operating synergies with them through specialization and to maintain well-balanced power relationships. 3 success of a TPL depends on its ability to: i) interactively develop customized and trustworthy logistics concepts and payment systems; ii) provide logistics services which regularly match agreed specifications and occasionally surpass them; iii) communicate an intense, consistent, multi-faceted message on logistics partnership to all relevant parties; iv) seize customer-led innovation opportunities and ensure a quick, wide and methodical diffusion within the group. The results of a participative case study with a leading global third-party logistics provider and of twenty-five key global relationships on a four years period validate the initial theoretical propositions and provide indications of the impact of a set of organizational and technological components on business performance. It stresses the importance of organizing the account management unit properly and provides an operating model. The findings are synthesized into an integrated business system model which shows the relations between its different components. The thesis is thus an original contribution to our understanding of the strategic adaptation process of TPLs and highlights the challenges linked to the development of a logistics partnership strategy. Because of its practical orientation, it is also a useful management tool, a value already demonstrated in the relationship with our key business partner during the research. Further research can take the framework to conduct statistical surveys; the methodology can also be used to explore other service industries. 4 Résumé Actuellement, les sociétés spécialisées en logistique (TPL 2 ) réalisent de plus en plus une part croissante des fonctions logistiques et de «supply chain» 3. Parallèlement à cette évolution, les industriels traditionnels ont davantage besoin de services performants et sont davantage enclins à développer des partenariats avec les prestataires logistiques. Pour la plupart des TPL, et en particulier pour les grandes entreprises multinationales, il est donc crucial de s adapter à ce nouveau contexte «partenarial». L incitation à le faire de manière efficace et efficiente est d autant plus grande que les marges financières sont faibles dans le secteur logistique et que la logistique joue un rôle clef dans la nouvelle économie globalisée. Comprendre les mécanismes qui déterminent les performances des TPL dans le cadre de partenariats logistiques et les traduire en une stratégie intégrée est donc un défi important pour le management des TPL. Pourtant, les quelques travaux qui abordent le sujet sont fragmentaires. Dans ce contexte, la thèse analyse l adaptation stratégique des fournisseurs de services logistiques dans un contexte partenarial et propose une approche qui se concentre sur les divers déterminants internes de succès et intègre les capacités fondamentales, les compétences clefs, et les ressources (le personnel, l infrastructure des systèmes d information et de communication, le réseau logistique). L approche conceptuelle s appuie sur des contributions tirées de la littérature sur la stratégie, le marketing industriel et la logistique. Le partenariat logistique est défini comme une relation d échange dans laquelle deux partenaires, légalement indépendants, s engagent pour réaliser un but spécifique commun, à moyen ou long terme. Ils leur affectent des ressources propres, intègrent une partie importante de leur processus, et partagent équitablement les bénéfices qu ils en tirent. Le cadre théorique suppose que les prestataires sont engagés dans des relations dynamiques et interactives avec leurs 2 TPL: en anglais third-party logistics providers: Entreprises tierces de fournitures de services logistiques. 5 clients et que leur performances résultent de leur capacité à générer des synergies opérationnelles avec eux à travers la spécialisation, et à maintenir des rapports de pouvoir équilibrés. Cela implique pour les TPL d être capables d interagir avec les clients pour développer des concepts logistiques intégrés et globaux ainsi qu un système de tarification inspirant une confiance mutuelle ; de fournir des prestations qui soient en adéquation avec les spécifications de l offre ou qui même les surpassent occasionnellement ; de communiquer de manière cohérente sur les différents aspects du partenariat logistique ; de saisir enfin les multiples opportunités d innovations offertes par les clients et d assurer leur diffusion rapide et méthodique au sein du groupe. Une étude de cas participative portant sur quatre ans auprès d un fournisseur mondial de services logistiques et en particulier sur vingt-cinq de ses relations avec des clients globaux m a permis de valider les propositions théoriques et de fournir des indications sur l impact d une série d éléments organisationnels et technologiques sur ses performances. Je mets en évidence la nécessité d organiser adéquatement la cellule de gestion du client et suggère un mode opératoire. Les principaux résultats sont synthétisés dans un modèle intégré de gestion qui montre les relations complexes entre les différents composants. L approche défendue dans la thèse est donc une contribution originale à la compréhension du processus d adaptation des opérateurs logistiques et expose les multiples aspects d un tel phénomène. Son orientation pratique en fait un outil de gestion de référence dont la valeur a été testée dans le cadre de la relation avec le partenaire logistique associé à la recherche. Le modèle proposé peut servir de base à des recherches futures soit comme cadre de travaux statistiques soit comme méthodologie pour étudier d autres secteurs de services.
