4 Leadership Tradition & Innovation Moving forward: Our Strategic Plan Board of Governors Chair Louis Régimbal Treasurer Brenda Bartlett 76 Secretary Sylvi Plante Members Gaétan Bouchard Scott Jones Barbara Karasek Andrea McConnell Sarah Ivory Stewart 78 Adjunct Lisa Smith Supported by a long and proud history, The Study is currently in the midst of a new strategic planning process. A comprehensive plan, adopted in 1997, introduced major improvements to the facilities, facilitated the growth of the senior school, introduced a community service programme, an expanded after school programme and enhanced communications with parents. In 2003, another plan ushered the development of a 21 st century approach to learning along with a renewed curriculum design, heightened student awareness of the importance of wellness, established an Advancement & Alumnae Relations office, and supported our faculty through professional development. This, our current plan, is being developed through an open process that includes all the school s various constituencies: students, parents, alumnae, faculty and staff, Board members. We are seeking a wide range of ideas and input in order to ensure proper representation as we launch this process. As we chart The Study s future, our responsibility is both to the past and the present. These are challenging times for all schools in Quebec: declining birth rates, restricted access through legislation, and a very serious economic downturn, to mention a few pressure points. We expect the new strategic plan to be bold and forward thinking, building on our current strengths and core values. Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of meeting many alumnae in and outside Montreal to discuss girls education in a format we called Le Salon, reminiscent of the social gatherings that flourished in France in the 17 th and 18 th centuries. These intimate soirées provided me with the opportunity to hear what old girls (a term I m beginning to appreciate) experienced at The Study, as well as what they most valued. The common thread, regardless of era, is that the school has prepared young women to become confident, articulate, critical thinkers who engage with the world as leaders in their chosen field of endeavour. Year after year, season after season. Throughout this edition of The Trillium, I invite you to read about how we are upholding this tradition. As a member of The Study community, I am confident you will be both impressed and inspired. Significantly, however, The Study also continues to evolve, taking the best of the past and building upon it to prepare our students for the dynamic, unknowable future that awaits them. In fact, I would argue that innovation itself is a tradition at The Study. For example, our pioneering bilingual and laptop programs are now complemented by new, leading-edge initiatives such as personalized learning (based on advanced brain research) and reality-based learning. To better understand this quintessential 21 st century pedagogy, I invite you to read the feature story on pages 16 and 17. Hodding Carter once famously expressed: There are two bequests we can give our children: One is roots, the other is wings. In the same spirit, I believe marrying tradition with innovation is the best way to prepare a new generation of girls for challenging and diverse post-secondary studies, meaningful careers and purposeful and happy lives. As another dynamic academic year culminates, I am delighted and proud that our girls are ready for the future that awaits them. Teams must also research and solve given problems, then present their solution to a panel of judges. In preparation for the competition, the impassioned grade 8 and 9 Study students and Science teacher, Ms. Miller, worked tirelessly after school and on weekends engineering robots in The Study s new Technology and Design Centre. The centre features a SMART board and 8 new imac computers as well as drill presses, vices and hand tools. Students program the robots using AutoCAD, Mindstorm NXT software and Bluetooth technology. The grade 9 Study team won the Research Project Category. The grade 8 Study team made it to the Ontario Provincial Championships, where they placed first out of 45 teams in the Teamwork Category! I am very proud of the progress that our rookie robotics team made, said Ms. Miller. Throughout the competition, teams must exemplify the First Lego League s core values: work to find the solutions with guidance from coaches, honour the spirit of friendly sportsmanship, display gracious professionalism in all actions, value discovery over winning, share experiences with others, and have fun! Hats off Congratulations to members of our first-time CRC Study Robotics Team who won five Best Rookie awards and one Overall Second Place Award in the Journal Category: Kimia Amouzegar 09, Corinne Bertoia 09, Anna Cybulsky 09, Shirley Yin Kay Ho 09, Ariel Jay 09, Emilie Michel 09, Adrianna Modafferi 09, Isabelle Richard 09, Annie Saleh 09, Claire Shaw 09, and Ashley Whalen 09. Six awards at the high-level CRC competition For the first time, The Study Robotics Team competed in the high-calibre, multi-disciplinary CRC Robotics competition held at H.S. Billings High School. The Study won the Overall Second place Medal in the Journals Category. They also won the Overall Best Rookie Award, as well as Best Rookie in the following categories: Kiosk, Website, Video, and Journal. The cross-curricular CRC competition challenges high school and CEGEP students and links English, French, computer science, mathematics, art, science, and more. All participating teams were required to engineer robots that gather coloured tennis balls, open six miniature garage doors, and shoot the matching balls through each door in less than five minutes. Teams also created a website that described the steps involved in building their robot, together with an online journal which included the personal experiences during the process. Teams submitted a video showcasing the school and the construction of the robot, and they also built a kiosk, which served as a robot display and repair station. The event also challenged students to apply classroom theory to practical situations and got them comfortable experimenting in the technological world outside of school. Congratulations to our talented Study robotics coaches, Kelly Miller, Anna-Maria Palumbo and Roland Bienvenu for entering this high-level competition! 4 Trillium Spring / summer 2009

7 New Biology Club By Diana-Luk Ye 09 Advanced Biology is a course taken either in grade 10 or 11. Many of us in grade 11 had already taken this course the previous year, and it was disappointing to us that we could not take another Biology course in our final year at The Study. In addition, some grade 10 girls were very enthusiastic Advanced Biology students and they wanted as much Biology as they could get. These motivations led me to talk with my Biology teacher, Ms. Kim Silkauskas, about the possibility of starting a Biology Club. Girls in grade 10 and 11 with a significant knowledge in Biology could join the new group. In order to have their participation in the Bio Club on their report card, each member must participate in at least 75% of all meetings. One of the commitments of membership is presenting at least one Biologyrelated project of your choice. With the guidance of Ms. Silkauskas, the Biology Club was initiated this school year. We, the twenty proud members of this club, have completed topics about the HIV Virus, the immune system, various ecological systems, and common pediatric illnesses. Members of the club acted as volunteers at the Montreal Children s Hospital Mini Med School this past fall. We also presented challenging activities to club members, such as the dissection of a one-meter long shark. Club attacks shark! The dissection of the shark, a project organized by club members, Victoria Di Genova 10 and Catherine Lépine 10, was the club s first dissection. It was a great review of all the physiological systems taught from the grade 9 Biology curriculum. Despite the vulgar stench of the shark, it was a fantastic educational experience. The horizons of projects are limitless when it comes to presenting in the Biology Club! above (l to r) Biology Club shark dissection: grade 11 club members Corinne Bertoia, Jillian Li On Wing, Kimia Amouzegar, and Shirley Yin Kay Ho enjoy digging in. Advanced Technology Filmmakers, Animators & Web Designers in the making When Study Advanced Technology students are filming movies, you will see them working in the hallway, setting up lights and microphones, adjusting the settings on a broadcast-quality video camera, and getting the actors ready to say their lines. Students complete every step of the filmmaking process, from the writing and planning, to video-editing. Computer-science classes are compulsory for grade 7 and 8 students. By grades 9 and 10, girls have the option above (l to r) students, Ariel Jay 09, Madison McLeod 09, and Annie Saleh 09 with their fellow AITM classmates 5 Trillium Spring / summer 2009 of continuing in Integrated Technology Management, which is a prerequisite to Advanced Integrated Technology Management in grade 11. The 21st century learner is a digital learner, said Amalia Liogas, The Study s technology teacher and IT Director. Kelly David 09, is one of the 10 students in Ms Liogas s AITM class. She has learned how to make websites, use Photoshop, PowerPoint, Word and Excel. She has also produced animated shorts using Adobe Flash. For Kelly, making a film is a labour of love. It s challenging, but we ve learned a lot. We use Final Cut and After Effects, she said. We use Illustrator and DVD Studio Pro to make portfolios. Learning information technology isn t just about fun. It s also about learning practical tools for future life and career. A lot of hard work goes into these classes, Ms. Liogas said. When Study graduates go to CEGEP and University, they will easily be able to make presentations that no others can match and be well on their way to advanced media studies should they chose to continue.

Clarity of Thought & Expression By Wanda Swiderski, Senior School English teacher The art of public speaking is highly valued at The Study and merits encouragement, practice and cultivation. Through public speaking competitions, students learn valuable research, writing, presentation, and leadership skills that will serve them the rest of their lives. In autumn, all of the Quebec Association of Independent Schools (QAIS) receive a list of diverse quotations, proverbs and adages from the school that will be hosting the competition at the Junior (grade 7 and 8), Intermediate (grade 9) and Senior (grade 10 and 11) levels. The goal for the students is to prepare a persuasive speech inspired by one of the statements. It is then that the students begin the process involved in developing a speech with passion, substance and logical argumentation. Mastering the art of public speaking In order to understand the context of their selected quotation, students research the author or source. They are then encouraged to come up with an issue they feel passionate about that relates to the quote. In English class, Study girls learn techniques for building a persuasive speech, then research their topic thoroughly to develop the content. Students in grades 7, 8, and 9 prepare a three-minute speech, while students in grades 10 and 11 prepare a fourminute speech. An in-class round takes place to determine the top two speeches from each class. They are then presented at a Senior School Assembly, where judges determine the top speeches that will represent The Study at the final Junior, Intermediate and Senior QAIS Competitions. Below (l to r) playing clarinet: madeleine GÉnÉreux 14 and sharon chee yin ho 14 In the words of Eric Olsen, Music is what life sounds like. In grade 6, students at The Study have the opportunity to learn the language of music through the instrumental music program. The girls choose from a wide variety of concert band instruments, including the flute, the clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone and even the tuba! They begin their year by learning about the different instruments and trying out their favourites to find the one that suits them best (this also includes a trip to a real symphony concert!) Connecting with the world of music Playing an instrument opens up the doors to many fun-filled activities, including playing in a large band setting, learning a wide array of great songs, writing and creating original musical works, and performing in three major concerts. Students at The Study also connect with professional musicians from the community, in a number of Meet the Musician clinics held throughout the year. Each clinician works with the band as a whole, as well as a specific section of the band, in a focused mini-clinic where students get one-on-one assistance with their instruments. It is a unique opportunity to experience music in a hands-on way, with no previous experience required! Students who choose to pursue music as an option in Senior School have the opportunity to take part in more exciting projects, such as creating and recording their own CD, performing in concerts and festivals, and attending a variety of musical performances. And, each student gets one-on-one assistance with her instrument. 8 Trillium Spring / summer 2009

12 Athletics Football Champions By Claudia Paoletti 09, Sports Captain The upcoming touch football season is going to be exciting! On the heels of last year s championship and undefeated season, we have some pretty big cleats to fill. The season is extra-special to me; it will be my last, as I am graduating this year. Playing football for the last four years has taught me a lot. During the 7-game football season, we meet twice a week to practice pitching, interceptions, zone and man-to-man defense. We also develop plays, humorously entitled Funky Town and Stimpy. During games we anticipate, think on our feet, and adapt to the situation because the game can change in a split second. I will be taking Lara De Stefano s 08 place as quarterback. I m nervous, but I cannot wait to get on the field. Football is the most fun sport of the five I play at The Study. Since we are one of the better teams, there is rarely tenseness on the field, just smiles and teamwork. Our coaches, Mona Bosnakyan 02 and Laine Roczniak 02, are both Study Alumnae, and are great! In regular, as well as playoff games, we play four downs with 20 minutes running time. Let the games begin! left Claudia Paoletti 09 It takes a village By Laurie Traylen, Director of Athletics At The Study, we work as a team to promote athletics, physical fitness and sportsmanship. Our program is greatly enhanced by parents and alumnae who give of their time to share their special expertise and ideas. They enhance our staff and help extend learning beyond the classroom. A sincere note of appreciation goes to the roster of volunteer coaches; Lori Baird (mother of Caroline Morgan 06 and Arielle Morgan 08), Suzanne Legge-Orr (mother of Jacqueline Orr 12), Clay Bertoia (father of Corinne 09), Stephanie Michel (sister of Andrea 08 and Emilie 09), alumnae Mona Bosnakyan 02 and Laine Roczniak Trillium Spring / summer 2009

1 The Grade 5 and 6 enthusiastic basketball team Row, row, row your boat! By Courtney Brais 09 Whether it is basketball, alpine skiing or even cross-country running, every sport takes a certain technique athletes strive to master. Running up bleachers, sprinting hurdles over hay stacks and then, after a group stretch, running up to Boat House 7 at Montreal s Olympic rowing basin, The Study crew team prepares the boats in order for the real practice to begin. Without a doubt, my fellow team members from grades 8-11 and I are all getting an amazing workout! Starting the first week of April, the crew meets after school twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. We have certainly made significant progress since previous seasons, winning Bronze in the Eastern Canada High School Regatta in spring of 2008! Precision, form & strength As I ve been rowing for nearly five years now, I can definitely say that rowing is predominantly about precision, form and well-applied strength. It is unlike any other sport, which might explain why it may take a little longer to achieve success. As we row primarily an eight-man (or should I say woman!) boat, the entire crew must be dedicated to mastering the sport and improving their technique. I speak on behalf of the entire team when I say that between laughing when an oar pops out of the rigger or suddenly having your seat fly off the slide, we all have a fantastic time, collapsing on the docks after a great, hardworking practice. 2 (L to R) Kiara kaminski 09 and corinne Bertoia 09 Cross-Country Ski Champs The Study s Cross-country Ski team enjoyed a great season. BELOW Splish Splash! 15 Girls for the Cure Raising Funds, One Step at a Time! All Study girls from grades 5 to 11 took full advantage of the sunny September 25 morning and walked to the Belvedere lookout for the Girls for the Cure fundraising event, proudly carrying The Study school banner and the four individual house banners. They joined hundreds of other students from surrounding girls independent schools and together raised a combined amount of about $139, 000, targeted to help fund women s cancer treatment and related services at St. Mary s Hospital. Surprise visit from Olympian Study Alumna Andréanne Morin 98, Olympian and Study Alumna, made a surprise visit to support the worthy cause. Andréanne, a Study grad, a Princeton grad, a two-time Olympic athlete and now a Université de Montréal law student, answered Study students eager questions about competing in the 2008 Olympic games in women s eight rowing. It s always great to visit The Study, said Andréanne. As always, the girls are smiling, inquisitive, and genuinely happy. I cherish the opportunity to be a role model to these outstanding young women, she added. Many thanks go to Girls for the Cure committee members Jillian Li On Wing 09, Corinne Bertoia 09, and Emilie Michel 09, for making the event a huge success! above Study Alumnae, Andréanne Morin 98, two-time olympic athlete walks with grade 6 students f Read more To learn more about how you can help enhance our athletics & wellness programming, activities & curriculum at The Study, please read about The Andréanne Morin Athletics & Wellness Fund on page

16 Academics Leadership at The Study By Antonia Zannis, Director of Senior School f Read more To learn more about how you can help enhance Leadership programming, activities & curriculum at The Study, please read about The Judy Elder Leadership Fund on page 21. Leadership and community spirit are two integral parts of life at The Study. Indeed, one of the first things that impressed me when I first joined The Study, seven years ago, was the strength of the leadership program. In fact, there was no real program per se, with a course description and time allotted in the schedule. Instead, it was a pervasive feeling or spirit, a philosophy that was evident in classrooms, co-curricular activities indeed, in all aspects of life at The Study. Students took, and continue to take, initiative in so many domains. Many of our clubs and activities exist as a direct result of student initiatives related to their areas of interest, their concern for others and their commitment to their school. When Sophine Johnsson 06 was in grade 8 and had a dream to start up a Free The Children chapter, she was encouraged to put together a proposal and find a teacher mentor. Thanks to her initiative, and that of students who followed her, our Free The Children chapter is still going strong. When Tanya Wong 04 decided in grade 10 to run a Model United Nations, she garnered the support she needed from classmates and faculty and realized her dream. Rebecca Hooton 07 wanted to direct a grade 7/8 play. She was encouraged to proceed and we still have student-directed grade 7/8 plays today. One year, Stephanie Claxton 12 wanted to help children who were confined to the hospital, and she organized the preparations of cards by her classmates for these ailing children. When Corinne Bertoia 09 and Jessica Magonet 09 wanted to start an environmental club, they found a staff advisor and forged ahead. The result includes a great recycling center, bicycle racks at the school, a walk to school programme, a composting programme and a national environmental conference with keynote guest speakers such as Marc Kielburger, Elizabeth May and Ray Zahab. Of course, what is important to remember is that what counts is not just the legacy of these ongoing activities. The continued presence of a philosophy at The Study, whereby students are exposed to global issues, are encouraged to think and dream and take initiative is so very important. Whether through traditional leadership roles, or those not yet dreamed of, students at The Study benefit from a truly unique Leadership Programme. 17 Music Through the Ages By A concert Volunteering my time to benefit others less fortunate is enriching, fulfilling, humbling and rewarding. with community impact In Summer 2007, as Mr. Ken Jones, President Emeritus of the Jamaica America Friendship Association (J.A.F.A.), overheard me practicing on piano, he was inspired to contemplate organizing a Command Concert in which I would perform my repertoire, along with talented musicians in Jamaica. My parents and I embraced the idea, and suggested that the concert be organized as a charitable event to benefit children in need. Eleven months of planning and preparation gave birth to the inaugural Music Through the Ages Concert that was held at the University Chapel of The University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, on July 6, 2008, under the patronage of Congratulations! On January 23, 2009 Head of School Elizabeth Falco awarded the Governor General s Academic Medal for 2008 to Julie D Aoust 08, who was at The Study from grade 6 through graduation. This Academic Medal is one of the most prestigious awards a student in a Canadian senior school can receive. Julie is pictured here with her parents Lindsay and Denis D Aoust on award day. Sir Kenneth Hall, Governor General of Jamaica, Lady Hall and Brenda LaGrange Johnson, U.S. Ambassador. The concert was a resounding Anastasia Johnson 10 success and yielded a substantial profit that helped boost J.A.F.A. s resources for charity and community development. Some of the proceeds were used to create two bursaries for students to attend the University of Technology, while other proceeds financed J.A.F.A. s Christmas treat for more than 150 children selected from over a dozen orphanages. Another impact of my community service was the launch of the lunchtime Classical Concert Series at the U.S. Embassy, created to provide opportunities for young music students to perform in public. Most of all, I am pleased that my contribution is said to have inspired other young musicians, and that due to the success of the inaugural concert, another is being planned for this summer. Being able to share my love of music and inspiring others makes it all worthwhile. I truly believe, more than ever, that the more one gives, the more one receives. Elizabeth Falco, Head of School, is pictured here congratulating Diana-Luk Ye 09 who was recognized by the Quebec Association of Fundraising Professionals as an Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy, an honour bestowed at the organization s 2008 National Philanthropy Day. 18 feature Reality Reality-based learning is learning and reflection through authentic experiences. At The Study, the outside world becomes the classroom: there, students connect with members of the local community and experts in the field to help solve real-life problems. The realitybased curriculum design results in highly motivated, engaged and joyful students, profound learning and the true development of creativity, critical thinking and teamwork. Learning is Learning at its Best By Lin Stranberg For a marketing-savvy group of grade 9 Study students, the possibility of a trip to China this spring presents more than an opportunity to sample another culture. If their project moves forward quickly enough, they could find themselves involved in a JiangMen Trade Fair, launching a Quebec product in the Chinese marketplace for the first time. Either way, they ll experience the challenge and learning of a venture in global entrepreneurship. Analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of math games and working with a manufacturer to invent one of their own redefines how grade 1 girls are learning math. When grade 11 law students act as crown and defense attorneys in moot law, they prepare legal cases and plead them before a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec. And in grade 6, girls bring their medical learning and awareness to the community with information and prevention booths in the lobby of the Montreal General Hospital. The process is an important part of the learning This is reality-based learning, the latest in a long tradition of pedagogical innovations at The Study that began with the school in It marks another breakthrough first among Montreal area independent girls schools: first bilingual school, first laptopequipped school, first wireless school, and now, first to lead with reality-based learning. When students work on projects related to the world around them, it takes on deeper meaning; as a result, the learning they experience is much more profound. The projects are fluid, dynamic and unpredictable, as real-life situations usually are, and students learn to manage any problems and opportunities that might arise: the process is an important part of the learning. With 19 reality-based learning projects underway at all levels, The Study is reinventing school for the 21st century. The Study s intentional approach Education for the 21st century promotes more durable learning with which girls can face the future confidently, no matter how the world is changing around them, says Head of School, Elizabeth Falco. We design reality-based learning not for the bells and whistles, or because we know the projects are fun and exciting, but because it s leading-edge pedagogy supported by solid research, which our faculty translates into their daily practices in the classroom. Ours is a very intentional approach. Young people learn far better when the learning is relevant to the real world, adds Claude Picard, The Study s Director of Academics. Education is demanding. We re discovering so much more about the brain and learning, and the knowledge base is changing at a frantic pace. At The Study, we make it a priority to keep on the leading edge of brain-based research and practice. 16 Trillium Spring / summer 2009

LEFT grade 1 student, tiana beaulieu, in lab, CENTER TALYA BOISJOLI 10 AND EVA HALABIAN 10 RIGHT Marie-Geo Sato 16 Qualities & values girls can rely on Designed to prepare today s students to navigate an uncertain and rapidly changing world, 21st century learning is focused on skills rather than information acquisition, competencies along with content. Girls learn not only skills, but qualities and values they can rely on, no matter how the world changes around them. Among these, Ms. Falco cites creativity; critical thinking; source judgment; analysis and synthesis; teambuilding; emotional intelligence; selfreflection; communication; and conflict resolution. The Study is lucky enough to be a small school with an engaged staff and the drive and agility to stay on top of learning. These advantages enable the school to readily embrace changes proposed to the Quebec curriculum, adhering to the courses connected to the Ministry of Education while using their flexibility to choose others. Every course on the curriculum is a careful fit, selected to align with The Study s intentional approach. Our faculty is motivated to understand and apply what needs to be taught at each level, Ms. Falco says. The great thing about this group of teachers is that they re intellectual; they understand the whys behind what they do and enjoy the academics around it. They re dedicated to teaching and love kids, so it s natural for them to want to make the best learning available to their students. They really care, and that s powerful. Concordia MBA Programme takes part in a Study project The Study s reality-based learning innovations are generating enthusiasm not only among students and teachers, but the companies and institutions with whom they re connecting. When The Study approached Concordia University regarding the grade 9 s Quebec-China marketing initiative, Dr. Alan Hochstein, Associate Dean, MBA Program at the John Molson School of Business (JMSB), was happy to get the call: We knew right away we wanted to participate, and we re thrilled to be part of this amazing project. The emphasis of the MBA program is to work more closely with the community, and this project qualifies as a special internship for which students will get a course credit. Under the direction of Dr. Christopher Ross, a full marketing professor at JMSB, the MBA students are now working closely with The Study s young entrepreneurs. We re a business school, and this is business. It s a win for everybody, says Dr. Hochstein. Helping students become global citizens Reality-based learning is emblematic of the approach to learning that keeps The Study at the forefront of pedagogy in Montreal, as the school upholds its proud history of innovation by living, learning and leading for the 21st century. Ms. Falco puts it well: We design our curriculum with the intention of enabling our students to develop skills that will serve them as global citizens in a world no one can foresee. 17

20 Staff Barbara Pappius Celebrates 30 Years By Kareen Finley, much-loved retired Study elementary teacher 18 Trillium Spring / summer 2009

21 When Barbara Pappius arrived at The Study in the Fall of 1979, she brought with her a very special measure of creative and artistic talent that she imparted to her new Kindergarten charges. The Kindergarten room was alive with children s creativity and there was always a buzz of activity surrounded by the comfortable chatter of five-yearolds. It was in these early moments of artistic expression, encouraged by Barbara, that children felt free to articulate the many ways in which they viewed the world and formed opinions. In her current role in computer technology, Barbara acknowledges how much technology has changed her teaching, bringing with it the rewards of seeing the children develop new ways of enriched learning. She is currently working on Photoshop and PowerPoint applications with grade 6 to produce documents for both their French and English classrooms, as well as assisting them in creating scenery for the Harry Potter play. Grade 5 recently worked very hard on their World Fair project, involving online research, word processing, and multi-media elements, including video editing. Girls in grade 4 are completing book trailers with imovie technology. In addition, they re beginning a robotics project in connection with their studies of native people in the Quebec region. This and so much more engenders that same buzz of activity that I saw in Barbara s Kindergarten class. An inspired and dedicated educator With a BA in Anthropology and a certificate in Early Childhood Education, followed subsequently by a Master s in Curriculum Design, it is no surprise to hear that Barbara enjoys thinking about education beyond the limits of everyday routine and lesson planning. To her, taking the time to think about the importance of what she is doing and what the force behind her teaching should be is paramount. Having seen many powerful changes in pedagogy over the 30-year span of her career at The Study, Barbara still hopes for more revolutionary change in the way we view schools and the way in which the needs of all students are met. Upon being asked if there was someone who inspired her greatly, Barbara s response was her mother, a successful scientist, whose infinite energy and lifelong search for knowledge taught Barbara and her sisters that nothing was impossible. These factors greatly influenced the way that Barbara looks at life, and they are indicative of what she has brought to her classroom and to her students. One of the greatest joys in her life is her husband, their two boys, and the life they have built together. Barbara takes great care in balancing her commitment as a full time educator and an active member of a loving family. facing page technology teacher, Barbara Pappius, with her grade 1 students far left, facing page the author, Kareen Finley Advanced Professional Development f Read more Online! 20 Trillium Spring / summer 2009

The Study School Foundation s Annual Report is available electronically on our website, For a hard copy, please contact the Advancement & Alumnae Relations office. It s All About the Girls Gratefully we have leaders within our midst possessing great foresight, matched only by their generosity. We are especially grateful to the Hallward and Jones families. above lara Bedjaoui 18, Dara Al saba (now living in jordan) and LÉa Morin 18 Below Anita Nowak and jason finucan of Advancement & Alumnae relations I don t believe the sky is falling, despite what doomsayers say about the global economic crisis, war against terror or even climate change. This is not to deny the significance of these and other complex issues. Nor to diminish the urgency of the political and societal courage needed to find solutions. My point is simply this: When it comes to where the world is headed, Study girls have the brainpower, confidence, leadership, creativity and critical thinking skills to inspire plenty of optimism. This is precisely why growing our endowment is so important. Every year, the General Endowment and four Named Endowment Funds provide a stream of revenue, without which, we simply could not afford our enriched curriculum and diverse co-curricular activities. Nor could we provide personalized learning strategies to meet the distinct learning needs of each of our students. Nor could we accept those stellar girls hailing from families who require some financial assistance. This year, as with many other Foundations and despite a prudent investment policy, our total endowment has lost considerable paper value, which means the school is operating with diminished resources. Gratefully, however, we have leaders within our midst possessing great foresight, matched only by their generosity. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful Endowment Gifts made by the Hallward and Jones families. Martha Hallward has a long-standing relationship with The Study. She graduated in 1948 and was followed by her three daughters (Margaret 74, Faith 76 and Annabel 80). Today, her ties remain close with granddaughter Laura in Grade 9. Laura s parents, who also contributed to the family gift, are Karma (nee Price) a graduate from 1977, and John, who joined The Study School Foundation Board of Trustees in October. Board of Governor member, Scott Jones, and his wife Sophie are the proud parents of Anna in Grade 3 and Emilie in Grade 1. When asked why they felt inspired to make an Endowment Gift, they responded in much the same way as did the Hallwards: If there were ever a time for The Study community to band together for the sake of the girls, it is now. It s all about the girls. This kind of leadership also keeps me optimistic about the future.
