by Franck Ridon et Gabriel Nicolau Bonjour, CO-PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Winter, and Holidays have 5inally arrived and so have we, as new Presidents of FRENZ. Both Gabriel, Franck, have recently volunteered like the rest of team and we feel privileged to be part of it, because we truly believe in the opportunity that Bilingual Education offers to our children, a real passport to the world with long lasting bene5its! In this part of the globe, this is a unique opportunity that needs to be cherished and developed. Since our arrival, it has been frankly very busy, getting up to speed with who s who, and all our activities led by FRENZ A very special acknowledgement to Vincent and Warren, the leaving Co President who have architected a lot of changes this past year; their leadership has been greatly appreciated and valued. Special credits also to the recently departed members for their precious contribution - like many parents you took a time out of the busy working life to give back to our kids. We have now picked up the baton and with the team, we will bring these recent developments to completion, support in- 5light projects as well as provide future directions and supportive structure for our growth. As a committee we remain focused on one thing, which is to foster the best environment and development toward French & English Bilingual education for our children. Parents Talent Pool We are never short of ideas and projects, so we would like to encourage parents to volunteer; Especially if you have a skill, a talent Art, web technology, project management, marketing, PR, OR simply if you are interested to give a bit of your time. It will accelerate our projects and bene5it our children. We cannot acknowledge enough existing volunteered parents, members that give their time to help out. Keep up the great work! New Caledonia school This October, RRS is welcoming the James Cook, the New Caledonian school where our kids went last year. We are committed to pursue this school partnership. While RRS is still working on the planning, it might be a good idea to volunteer to host a kid at home, especially if you are a bilingual family. This is because they come here to improve their English speaking As of today only ~10 families have put their hands up and about 20 kids are coming Donations Donation, Donation is our lifeline to fund the school s regular activities and resources that keep bilingual education alive and contribute to pay for things that matter to our kids. Thanks for the ones that have donated so far. Many of them came to fruition: We are proud of the special achievement with the recent "FrancEducation Label" of RRS L'Archipel. This is an of5icial certi5ication delivered by French Ministry of Education. Only 8 Bilingual schools internationally have received it! This milestone acknowledges the quality of our NZ Bilingual teaching programme, with the support of the L Archipel teachers, BOT, RRS management and all the parents who have been helping the unit. Full credit to Vincent for leading this initiative with the support of RRS management team and teachers. Our new school, "L'Etoile du Nord" is now up and running and going great guns. A big Cheers to Zoe Chamel for her dedication to make it happens. La Petite Ecole is going well. We have now a third location at Birkdale North Primary L Etoile du Nord. The team is doing a great job accommodating different locations to suit children and parents. Well done, guys. On the funding side, the FLAM Grant has been received for 5irst phase of L'Etoile du Nord Development programme. Our appreciation goes to AEFE and French Embassy for their commitment to bilingual education, and Felicitations to Vincent and Zoe who have worked really hard to drive the Grant application and got it over the line. In a different style our fundraising dinner at Pastis, was successful Full credit to the parents, and friends that have left the evening with empty pockets. Sorry but you ll need to blame the Quiz Master, Auctioneers and our organizer Maguy! The after-school classes are now running very well. This is another great initiative by active and passionate parents the children love it. The team has published the next set of activities and it was sent to you last week you d better have a look at it, there are some pretty cool stuff for children. by Vanessa Ce trimestre fut haut en couleurs! Les enfants de Ruma 1 ont tous prouvé qu ils sont de véritables artistes. Comme dans le reste de l école, les enfants ont experimenté avec diverses approches artistiques pour pouvoir créer un véritable musée! Le thême tournant autour des insectes et des bestioles qui nous entourent, nous avions de quoi nous inspirer simplement en regardant dans nos jardins respectifs! ART RRS RUMA 1 Les enfants ont crée plusieurs oeuvres d art, et ont pu aussi profiter de l expertise de l équipe pédagogique à la Auckland Art Gallery et au Corbans Estate Arts Centre. Ils ont experimenté avec des techniques différentes en manipulant des cure-pipes pour faire des portraits et en s essayant à l encre de Chine pour faire des impressions de dessins d insectes. Ils ont aussi crée, en utilisant des pastels gras, des sérigraphies à la Andy Warhol, ainsi que des impressions de feuilles d arbres néo-zelandais...ils savent tous reconnaitre un Kauri maintenant (entre autres!). Enfin, ils ont aussi utilisé des technique de découpage et de collage pour reproduire des insectes dans le style d Eric Carle, en s inspirant des illustrations du livre le grillon qui ne voulait pas chanter. RRS RUMA 1 by Vanessa Cette quantité de travail et d oeuvres produites n auraient pas été possible sans le soutien de Sarah qui travaille maintenant dans Ruma 1 les jeudis et vendredis, et aussi d Alexandre, notre étudiant Quebecois, qui nous a accompagné pendant ce trimestre. by Vesna Nikolic-Ivanovic This year started on a big note with some very exciting events we have become part of the future worldwide network of schools with the FranceEducation Label. That s because we are very successful in teaching/ learning the NZ curriculum in both languages and Ruma 12, together with the other L Archipel classes. We celebrated this big event in style. We sang in Maori and in French for the French officials who were invited to our ceremony. They talked about how impressed they were with the quality of our bilingual education at RRS. Our topic the first term was RRS Citizen. We discussed our family values and rules that support them. It was such fun to hear about different rules we have at home and what happens when we forget about them! We worked in groups to present a poster about our chosen classroom rule and were learning to describe a benefit of having rules at school. In our unit on Relationships we learnt to play co-operatively, apply rules and fairplay practices by respecting the rights of others and acting in a responsible way. We enjoyed making co- operative creatures. We made a Supportive Spider, a Caring Caterpillar, a Listening Lizard, a Friendly Frog and many others. The funniest part was when we were asked to move the creature and each group had to co- operate using all team members. We also liked playing games like Spiders and Flies. We talked about the principles of fair play and the importance of following rules so that everyone can enjoy playing together. Ruma 13 invited us to a performance about their exploration of the classroom rules RRS Ruma 12 It was great fun watching the seniors perform their sketches. We laughed out loud when they imitated the teachers and played the naughty students who tend to forget the rules. Many parents watched with us, clapping and admiring Ruma 13 s amazing acting skills. Our Term 1 arts unit had a focus on dance. Dancing with Amanda was an unforgettable experience. We were so excited about the moves and the music that we couldn t wait for her next session! She guided us through the basic steps of hip-hop dance with patience, grace and ease. With each session we became a little more skilled and confident. We found that it was liberating and enchanting for our bodies and souls. The boys were very keen to showcase their creativity and they loved every minute of it. Everyone was exploring movement, letting their imagination and creativity run wild. At the end, we didn t want to let Amanda go we were cuddling her and wanting to keep her with us forever. We can t wait to have her again next year! Thank you Amanda, for bringing such pleasurable and relaxing moments to our school life. We will continue to experiment with movement and dance to keep in shape for our dancing classes next year.
For Anzac Day the whole school gathered at the top court in an atmosphere of respect and silence. Many children brought poppies that they have made at home. We learned about the meaning of the Anzac Day and talked about it in the class. Ava H. and Ava S. prepared an oral presentation about Anzac Day. We watched the flag go up the pole and then marched in silence through the corridors to salute the names on the school honours board. On the honours board are the names of past Richmond Road students who lost their lives in the First World War. We silently put our poppies there in remembrance of those soldiers. Miss Pop-up alias Gitta Hancock comes regularly on Thursdays to share with us her love of literature and her pop up book collection. She is fond of the senior children and also shares books with them. After reading to the children she works with a few reading groups. Her help is invaluable. Ms Pop Up is a keen cook and at Easter brought along gingerbread bunnies for the children to decorate (linked of course to a pertinent pop up book.) Our chef d oeuvres are in our class photo library. Visual Arts, Term 2. Auckland City Art Gallery Trip This was an enjoyable trip to our recently refurbished city art gallery. The topic was Portraiture and Identity. The gallery educators were very skilful in engaging us in viewing and discussion. The visit also involved art making on the same topic. So it was a good balance of talk and do. We finished up with a picnic and play in adjacent Albert Park. It was great! Our trip to Corban s Estate was exciting because we learned in detail about the Continue... monoprint technique from French artist / tutor Anne-Sophie. She was so helpful and organized and we enjoyed every moment. All that we learned about the monoprint technique helped us produce some wonderful art pieces for the RRS Art Exhibition. The children voted for the best monoprint. Sophia V.L. s beautiful butterfly was the winner. Congratulations, Sophia! As always, we had helpful parents who came along on the art trips. Science, Term 2. Slugs and Snails. We carefully observed the specimens that we found around the school grounds. They were keept in our Escargotville and each of us had to adopt an escargot or a slug. Our observations facilitated discussion and learning about: where slugs and snails live/ where to 5ind them, naming the basic features of these animals, an introduction to how scientists group animals, experiments to 5ind out about how/if slugs and snails respond to different stimuli, a comparison of slugs and snails, movement, the pros and cons of having a shell and an introduction to food chains. At the beginning of the term our little specimens were quite active but by the end of term (mid winter) we were able to observe snails in hibernation. The planning for this topic didn t involve life cycles, but when one of the tiger slugs laid eggs, what an exciting discussion! We were intrigued to learn that slugs and snails are not him or her but are him/hers - hermaphrodites...very interesting. At the end of Term 2 we had a Waste Wise drama session with Wendy who taught us about the importance of reducing/reusing and recycling. It was stimulating and creative to learn through drama about an important ecological issue - too much rubbish going to landfills. The children s cooperative skills, problem solving and creativity were used throughout the session. They finished with group performances of jingles and advertisements like Poubelles au regime. During our fantastic French Week, together with the other two L Archipel classes, we were proud hosts to all RRS children; teaching them some basic words and phrases, playing petanque and other games in French, making pancakes, doing arts & crafts in French, watching French food demonstrations including tasting soups and cakes, and most of all, we absolutely loved our French guingette. Every morning the whole school was queuing for croissants and hot chocolate. For the last day we dressed up as French characters and took part in the fabulous fashion show. Special thanks to Antoine, parents, sponsors and teachers. What a success, our French week! You might think it was the last event for the term, but you are wrong! Tilly the clown, our charming world travelleuse, came to visit us in the last week and performed for us a beautiful pantomime about the eternal search for love. The children were more than excited, especially when given the opportunity to perform. We discovered some great performers among L Archipel children, like Louis G. from Ruma 1, Max from Ruma 13, and also the special acting skills of our teacher Michael whose charms were unfortunately not good enough to seduce the clown. It was simply hilarious! What a great way to end the term.
RRS RUMA 13 by Elizabeth Diaz Et bien voila c est déjà le milieu de l année, incroyable!!! Cette année, je dois dire que je passe une année particulièrement agréable en tant qu enseignante. Même si nous sommes 33, la classe fonctionne vraiment bien, et ce, en raison du fait que les enfants appliquent quotidiennement nos deux devises «je suis responsable» et «j ai des bonnes manières». Il est de plus en plus fréquent de voir dans la classe des situations d entraide spontanées. Je dois avouer que pour moi, c est un vrai bonheur de voir cette ambiance de solidarité se développer dans la classe. Bien sûr, il y aurait des tonnes de choses à raconter sur le début d année de la Ruma 13 : les pièces de théâtre de la fin du premier trimestre, le camp, les sorties artistiques à Corbans et à la Auckland Art Gallery... mais je voudrais profiter de cette newsletter pour parler de quelque chose qui restera sans aucun doute dans les mémoires comme un des grands moments de l histoire de l Archipel : la première FRENCH WEEK. Au cours de la 9eme semaine du 2eme trimestre, l Archipel a organisé une semaine française à laquelle toute l école a pu participer. Les professeurs et teacher-aide ont bien entendu été d un grand soutien, mais l ensemble de l événement a été soigneusement organisé et mené à bien par Antoine Praud, le merveilleux stagiaire que la Ruma 13 a eu la chance d avoir cette année. Durant cette semaine française la Ruma 13 s est transformée en guinguette!!! Sur une idée originale de Vanessa, les grands ont servi les autres enfants de l école sur fond de vieilles chansons françaises. On pouvait déguster un demi-croissant et un chocolat chaud à 8h30 et à 11h ou bien un sandwich au pâté pour le déjeuner. En plus de notre guinguette les grands étaient en charge de 4 ateliers : la pétanque, les crêpes, le jeu du goût et le bricolage. Chaque enfant de l école (et c est dans cela que réside le succès de cette semaine) a pu ainsi lancer sa boule de pétanque, faire sauter sa crêpe avant de la déguster, goûter de la moutarde aux raisins et du saucisson sec, et enfin fabriquer son petit carnet couverture vichy avec des mots de français de base. Quand on a la chance de travailler avec des enfants il y a des moments qui restent gravés dans votre esprit. La french week était un moment de joie, de bonheur et FROM ANTOINE Comme je le disais, la French week est finie, mais c'est un très beau succès. Ce qui signifie que cette magnifique expérience sera répétée dans le futur (il nous faudra tout de même au moins une année complète pour pouvoir récupérer et se lancer de nouveau). Mais tout cela n'aurait pas pu voir le jour si nous n'avions pas eu l'aide de vous tous. Ainsi, et de la manière la plus sincère du monde, toute l'équipe de l'archipel, tenait à vous remercier de tout le soutien que vous nous avez apporté, d'une manière ou d'une autre. Je vous souhaite un très bon fin de term et de bonnes vacances.
by Anna Sbai C est incroyable, nous avons ouvert L Etoile du Nord il y a juste cinq mois et maintenant nous nous sentons bien installés dans notre magnifique environnement. En février, nous avons démarré avec six enfants et le trimestre suivant (en juillet), nous attendons quatorze nouveaux élèves d âges différents. Etant donné le succès grandissant de notre unité, au prochain trimestre les petits et les grands vont travailler séparément pour certaines disciplines. Nous sommes heureux d accueillir dans notre équipe une nouvelle enseignante, Marie Choureemootoo qui va travailler avec les élèves de Year 1 et 2. Marie est originaire de l Ile Maurice, elle est une enseignante expérimentée en NZ, le français est sa langue maternelle et... cerise sur le gâteau... elle est passionnée par les Arts. Bienvenue aussi à nos deux nouvelles stagiaires : Valinda Chendriah et Ranui Changues. est thaicienne et travaillera dans la classe des grands. School Production: L ETOILE DU NORD Valinda vient de La Réunion et va aider dans la classe des petits. Ranui MERCI! C est un excellent début de l Etoile du Nord grâce à l engagement de plusieurs personnes. Merci Mme Low (la Directrice de BNS) pour votre soutient quotidien! Un grand merci à Sophie et à Julie d avoir organisé la bibliothèque, les ressources et d avoir trouvé des stagiaires. Merci à Astrid, notre stagiaire incroyablement efficace (tu vas nous manquer!) et bien sur à Zoé! que la création d une trouvé nouvelle unité a été une nouvelle expérience particulièrement intéressante et enrichissante. Le plus grand défi a été d enseigner en même temps à des enfants de quatre niveaux scolaires différents (élèves entre 5 et 9 ans). Heureusement, comme nous avons un petit nombre d enfants dans la classe, nous pouvons répondre aux besoins de chaque élève. Les enfants ont fait des progrès impressionnants dans tous les domaines mais ce qui m a réjouit le plus a été de les voir s intégrer pleinement au sein de leur nouvelle école.
Stage a l Etoile du Nord by Astrid Intéressée par l enseignement depuis de nombreuses années et curieuse de découvrir le système éduca8f kiwi, j ai contacté l école de Richmond Road afin de savoir s il était possible d effectuer un stage au sein de cet établissement. J ai donc eu la connaissance de l ouverture d une nouvelle sec8on française à Birkdale North Primary School, au sein de laquelle je travaille depuis le début de l année. C était une opportunité incroyable d assister à ce démarrage : nous devions créer de nombreuses ressources éduca8ves, mais aussi décorer et organiser la classe de l Etoile du Nord J ai donc assisté la Maitresse dans ces tâches. J ai aussi eu la chance de prendre en charge de temps à autres les élèves les plus pe8ts, pour les ac8vités de maths, d écriture mais aussi de lecture. Nous avons aussi réalisé différents bricolages et fait un spectacle de marionneqe pour les enfants. Je suis ravie de constater les progrès des enfants et le développement de la classe depuis 5 mois. C est aussi un plaisir de travailler avec Maitresse Ania, qui me donne la possibilité d avoir des ini8a8ves et une réelle mission d enseignement avec les enfants. Je garderai un souvenir inoubliable de ceqe expérience au sein de ceqe chaleureuse école qui valorise la diversité et l ouverture au monde! J ai hâte de devenir ins8tutrice à mon tour!
L etoile du Nord Children s Stories: AROUND EDN J aime ma nouvelle école parce que les enfants sont gentils et on fait beaucoup de sport : la natation, le tennis, le netball, le rugby et le foot! Avant je préférais faire des multiplications sur les ipads mais maintenant j aime bien écrire une histoire sur plusieurs jours. Après on les publie et ça fait un beau livre.» (Léo, 9 ans) J adore écrire! J ai appris comment faire un récit avec une intrigue et des dialogues. J aime écrire des longues histoires parce qu après je peux les lire à mes parents. En thème, nous avons parlé du cerveau. Je sais maintenant que l hémisphère gauche contrôle la partie droite du corps et l hémisphère droit la partie gauche. Quand je te parle, c est mon hémisphère gauche qui s active!» (Anouk, 7 ans) J aime bien lire et ce trimestre nous avons beaucoup travaillé en lecture avec Lidia. En maths, j adore les ipads et travailler les doubles. Le mieux, ce sont les doubles sur les ipads! J aime être ici parce que notre classe est très jolie. Pour le spectacle, je prépare deux choses parce que j ai deux classes : une danse avec ma classe française et une danse de Pacifika avec ma classe anglaise.» (Emilie, 7 ans) LES ENFANTS J adore faire des maths dehors avec Astrid et je sais compter jusqu à 20! Je sais que dans ma tête il y a un cerveau et il est le plus important. Il faut faire attention à la tête! Avec mon cerveau, je peux bouger, être content ou triste. Quand je suis triste, je dois penser à ma maman et à mon papa ou à la plage ou... au chocolat. Comme ça, je suis content!» (Liam, 5 ans) J aime lire en francais parce que c est chouette! J ai appris comment lire les mots difficiles. J aime bien danser et chanter pour le spectacle parce qu on peut montrer aux autres ce qu on a appris. De tous les sports, j ai préféré le tennis.» (Lidia, 6 ans)
NEW TEACHER at L etoile du Nord by Marie Choureemootoo Je suis Marie Choureemootoo. Je suis originaire de l ile Maurice, pe8te ile tropicale qui se situe à l est de Madagascar et à l ouest de Perth et qui a longtemps été une colonie française. Cela fait un peu plus de quatre ans que ma pe?te famille a adopté la Nouvelle Zélande et c est une expérience de vie excep?onnelle. J ai acquis une grande expérience dans le domaine de l enseignement et c est avec un grand plaisir que j ai accepté d enseigner à Birkdale North Primary. Je me sens très mo8vée et j ai grand hâte de commencer le prochain trimestre afin de connaitre d avantage les p 8ts loups. C est avec beaucoup de dynamisme, d enthousiasme et de créa8vité que je compte par8ciper au bon développement des enfants et les ini?er à la lecture, l écriture et les maths. L art et moi c est une grande histoire d amour. Je suis passionnée de peinture, de photographie et d installa?ons. J espère créer de mul?ples occasions pour memre en œuvres mes connaissances dans des projets enrichissants afin de développer les talents ar?s?ques de mes futurs élèves. LA PETITE ECOLE Locations & Times: Notre Petite Ecole se deroule dans 3 differentes locations: Epsom, 11 Griffin Avenue de 9h30 à 13h30 le lundi et vendredi. La Petite Ecole accueille des enfants d'âge préscolaire dans un environment du type "maternelle" où l'on parle, chante, écrit et joue en français. Glen Eden Community House, 13 Pisces Road de 9h30 à 13h30 le mardi. Birkdale North School, 213 Birkdale Road de 9h30 à 13h30 le jeudi. Les enfants de 3 à 5 ans sont encadrés par des animatrices françaises et toutes les activités se déroulent en français. After School Classes by Myriam Crosswell "Les Ateliers" at Richmond Road Primary School has become a well oil engine. We started these Atelier last year 2011 in Term 2, to give the children of RRS the opportunity to; develop their art skills and their creativity like in "l'atelier Bricolage" with Charlotte or in "l'atelier Theatre" with Melodie and Johanne; help with their concentration; develop their physical skills like in "la danse Tahitienne" with Wendy or in "l'atelier" Music with Joystick with Nolween, and "Les ateliers de Chants" with Marie and Inda. These "Ateliers" also taught our children about the traditional French "Fables de la Fontaine", the rules and fun in the traditional "Jeux de Societes" with Cecile, and "L'histoire de France" with Blandine. Children were able to be the next 'scientists apprentice' in the Atelier "Nutrition" with Frederique A. and in the Atelier "Science Amusante" with Frederique V., where they experimented with Archimede principle's, and they tracked the path of an apple from the mouth to the digestive system. The planning for these atelier is refresh each term with new subjects and new teachers, but same FUN. Our Teachers are experienced mums; Frederique V., who has a PhD in Physics, Frederique A. is a Nutritionist, and Celine B. is a professional "orthophoniste". They are also passionate individuals; Nolwenn is the owner of the company NOP (New Orchestra Practice), Wendy is a tahitian dance teacher in Pacific Dance New Zealand, and Inda is a "mezzo- soprano singer"... We are always looking for passionate teachers, mums, or others to share their experience on new subjects with our children - enquiries are welcome :-) email : ascfrenz@gmail.com. Open to all children in RRS and to all Members of FRENZ, these Ateliers are taught in French and give the flexibility for parents to pick up their children from the school at 4.30pm. We are learning to do dance on oteas with tamos, fa'arapus and other movements that look easy but are so hard to master! Outdoor games indoor with Mickael on Tuesday, with 3 kids. Looking forward to having more of La Queue du Diable in the future, with more kids! Crafts with Mathilde on Wednesday and 4 kids. The kids loved building castles out of carton boxes and loved shaping objects with la pate a sel. Society games with at least 4 kids for each session. We learned to play Uno (1000 bornes), Qui l'a vu?, Mimes, Pictionnary, etc. Kind Regards, Helene Caura-Yang
