III. ( I used to go, I was going, ) ( I went (if used in a si clause )) **Usage examples: 1. habitual actions in the past Quand j étais un enfant, j allais au parc avec ma famille. When I was a kid, I used to go to the park with my family. 2. interrupted actions in the past Je promenais le chien quand j ai vu un OVNI. I was walking the dog when I saw a UFO. 3. in si clauses with the conditional Si j allais en France, je visiterais l Arc de Triomphe. Verb endings in the futur are the same for regular and irregular verbs. V. ( I would visit, I would go, etc.) **Usage examples: 1. to talk about hypothetical situations Je visiterais le musée, mais je n ai pas le temps. I would visit the museum, but I don t have time. 2. with the imparfait in si clauses Si j avais plus d argent, j irais en France. If I had more money, I would go to France. **quelques verbes au conditionnel visiter (to visit a place) Common pitfall!! aller (to go) j visiter n. visiter je ir n. ir tu visiter v. visiter tu ir v. ir il/elle visiter ils/elles visiter il/elle ir ils/elles ir -->The conditionnel follows the same pattern as the futur, but with different endings: **To form the conditionnel of regular verbs, leave the infinitive alone and add imparfait endings. **The irregular stems in the futur are the same as the irregular stems in the conditionnel.
I. Après -->Get used to the idea that après is NEVER directly followed by a SUBJECT (je, tu, nous, Henri, etc.). **One way to talk about the past with après is to use something that looks like passé composé: avoir fini ses devoirs, Mark est allé au cinéma. (looks like passé composé, but uses the infinitive of avoir or être) être allé au cinéma, il s est couché. **Note that there is no change in subject in the two sentences above (talking about Mark the whole time). If there is a change in subject, ONE WAY to talk about the past is to use Quand... Mark est allé au cinéma, son frère a mangé son sandwich. (notice two different subjects) II. Be careful not to overuse «moi». Examples: Mon frère m a donné un joli cadeau! My brother gave me a nice gift! Mon frère a donné moi un joli cadeau. Ma soeur m a dit la vérité. My sister told me the truth! Ma soeur a dit moi la vérité. Mon prof m a parlé en français! My teacher spoke to me in French! Mon prof a parlé moi en français. Moi is only used in four instances: 1. Donnez-moi un café, s il vous plaît. (affirmative commands) 2. Ce cadeau, c est pour moi? (after prepositions: pour, avec, sans, après, chez, etc.) 3. --Qui est à la porte? --C est moi! 4. --Tu as mangé mon bonbon! --Moi? (after the verb être) (standing on its own)
III. The various ways to say «because» ** parce que (because) Il est allé à la piscine parce qu il avait envie de nager. He went to the pool because he felt like swimming. ** à cause de (because of -- negative reason) Il a dû rentrer chez lui à cause du mauvais temps. He had to return home because of the bad weather. ** grâce à (because of -- positive reason) Le bon chien a bien mangé grâce à la générosité de son maître. The good dog ate well because of the generosity of its owner. ** en raison de (because of -- never used with people, usually with abstract concepts) On ne doit pas être préjugé en raison de la réligion. People should not be judged because of their religion. IV. Talking about cities, countries and islands: TO, IN **Cities: always use à. Je vais Paris cet été. I m going to Paris this summer. Il y a beaucoup de choses à faire Chicago. There are a lot of things to do in Chicago. **Islands: always use à. Napoléon est né Corse. Napoléon was born in Corsica. **Feminine countries: always use en. Je pars bientôt France. I m leaving for France soon. Mon père travaille Chine. My dad works in China. **Masculine countries: generally use au. Rogelio est né Mexique. Rogelio was born in Mexico. Souleymane part bientôt Sénégal. Souleymane is leaving soon for Sénégal. **Plural countries: always use aux. Moi, je suis né États-Unis. I was born in the United States. **To say, FROM a place, use some form of de. Ex: La famille de Gloria est du Mexique.
V. No-no number 1: talking about who owns what...l anniversaire mon ami......mon ami s anniversaire......my friend s birthday......la voiture ma soeur......ma soeur s voiture......my sister s car......l ami mon oncle......mon oncle s ami......my uncle s friend... VI. No-no number 2: BEAUCOUP DE (not beaucoup des, usually) Oprah Winfrey a beaucoup argent. Oprah Winfrey has a lot of money. Ma femme a beaucoup amis. Ma femme a beaucoup des amis. My wife has a lot of friends. Jeff Gordon a beaucoup voitures. Jeff Gordon a beaucoup des voitures. Jeff Gordon has a lot of cars.

I m sick of it! / I ve had enough! / I ve had it up to here! J en ai assez! J en ai ras le bol! 6. Je n en sais rien! I have no idea! 7. Je t en prie! Please! (extremely super extra polite, but very common); other uses include: Je vous en prie! Go ahead, when opening a door for someone Please do come in, when someone knocks on your door Challenge!!
