CAMPAIGN 2015 PHOTOS: Martin C. Barry Newsfirst Hundreds cheer Mulcair at Outremont campaign launch NDP leader pledges to bring in 10,000 Syrian refugees M a r t i n C. B a r ry During a launch last week for NDP leader Tom Mulcair s campaign to retain his seat in Outremont as MP, he called on the Conservative government to do its part to help relieve the humanitarian crisis in which tens of thousands of refugees who are fleeing the Middle East are living in hardship while trying to enter Europe. Urges action Addressing more than 500 supporters at the Rialto Theatre on Parc Ave., Mulcair called on Ottawa to take in 10,000 Syrian refugees from now to the end of 2015. In the meantime, however, the Conservative government s response has been to deal with the crisis as though it were no different from any other situation involving refugees. Because we can do more we must do more and we will do more, said Mulcair, noting that an NDP government would appoint a coordinator for Syrian refugees who would work closely with countries which have already agreed to accept Syrian refugees. Moved by tragedy Images define an era, added Mulcair, who said he was moved by an image that went viral during the previous 24 hours, showing a small boy who had drowned in the waters off Turkey. Mulcair said that under the NDP, there would be no cap to bring as many people as possible to Canada among other measures. We have to work across political lines with the government today, right now, so that action can be taken as quickly as possible to assist in the current crisis. He said that generally speaking under the current government, we cannot be proud of Canada s contribution on the international scene. Regarding the Conservatives management of Canada s employment insurance system, Mulcair said they ransacked EI while rendering fragile the lives of tens of thousands of families as well as entire sectors of the Quebec economy. Mulcair maintained there are 200,000 more unemployed Canadians today than there were before 2008 when the last major recession hit the country. Says Harper failed miserably And it isn t for nothing that I am talking about the last recession in 2008, he continued. Because he is the only prime minister of the modern era who when he is asked questions about the recession during his mandate, he has to ask which one. He accused Harper of failing the middle class miserably, while neglecting the infrastructure of cities and losing all incredibly across the country in environmental matters. Because we can do more we must do more and we will do more, he says Mulcair recalled that in 2007 when he ran for the NDP for the first time, most people found it hard to imagine the party winning a stronghold Liberal riding like Outremont. Four years later, the wave of orange would sweep almost the whole province. In 2011, Quebecers from all walks of life from every region of the province francophone, anglophone, allophone turned the page and voted for change and it started right here, he said, recalling that the Rialto has become a traditional staging place for NDP victories. Sees change across the country Mulcair alluded to the Alberta NDP party s recent victory. The message for change is resonating in huge rallies in every corner of the country. And let me tell you that as thrilled as I am to be in a big city like Toronto or Winnipeg or Vancouver and have a thousand people in a room, in the last couple of days we ve had 1,000-person rallies in places like Penticton and Kamloops. We can feel that change is on its way. But it s going to take a lot of hard work to get us there. So it s time to do what we ve always done with Jack [Layton]. Remember him always rolling up his sleeves? That s what we have to do. We ve got to roll up our sleeves and take our message to every corner of Quebec and right across the country. By working together we will complete what was started by Jack and replace Stephen Harper and build the Canada of our dreams. Mulcair and his wife Catherine acknowledge cheers from hundreds of supporters during his Outremont campaign launch. Mulcair touches base with young supporters during his Outremont campaign launch. ANGRY? ANNOYED? Ottawa should restore health funding: user groups head But NDP says it can no longer reverse Conservative budget cuts Wants transfers restored M a r t i n C. B a r r y Since impossible is a word that doesn t exist in Pierre Blain s vocabulary, there s no reason, he says, why the leaders of Canada s most important political parties running in the upcoming election shouldn t be able to restore the billions of dollars in health care transfer payments cut by the Conservative government. Says commitment needed The RPCU thus supports the demands by the government of Quebec as regards federal financing for health, he said, adding that the RPCU is also demanding that the federal transfer payment be increased so as to represent at least 25 per cent of the provinces health care expenses while taking into account the reality of the aging demographics of the province. All the federal candidates in Quebec from all the parties must commit themselves in this way, because we are talking about the lives and dignity of their fellow citizens, continued Blain. They must stop In a statement issued last week on behalf of the Regroupement provincial des comités des usagers (RPCU), Blain, who heads the Montreal-based umbrella group, extended an invitation to all the political parties to commit themselves to improving federal support for health care. FILIA Walk A Thon raises funds for seniors Walkers were able to stay cool in the drizzle M a r t i n C. B a r ry Rain or shine, the annual FILIA Walk A Thon must go on. And so it did last Saturday morning, although in a shortened sort of way due to rain. Instead of walking as far as Jarry Park, the participants took a route only a few blocks long before returning to FILIA on Ogilvy Ave. for a BBQ lunch. It was the first time in years that participants in the FILIA Walk A Thon found themselves being upstaged by mother nature. Each year, the Walk A Thon raises money for the many services and activities offered by FILIA. damp weather would be very comfortable for walking, in contrast to past years when exposure to intense sun required extra caution in order to make sure everyone was well hydrated. We ll walk a good four and a half blocks, she said. Symbolically it means a lot for us: it s raising funds, raising awareness for FILIA, and reminding seniors of the necessity to keep active. Nicholas Pagonis, president of the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal, doubted the rain would dampen the spirit of those who turned out for the walk. Councillor Mary Deros and FILIA assistant director Sofia Markantonakis during the 2015 Walk A Thon. It was the first time in years that participants found themselves being upstaged by mother nature FILIA s services While FILIA s initial mission was to provide assistance for Greek women of the Park Extension Hellenic community, its mandate has since then broadened and people of every origin are welcome. Some of the services FILIA provides are home housekeeping and supervision, volunteer training and a healthcare clinic for the feet. Although Papineau MP Justin Trudeau and Laurier-Dorion MNA Gerry Sklavounos were unable to attend, Anthony Mavros, who is running for the Conservative Party in Laval s Vimy riding, was among those who participated. I think it s great what FILIA does here, he said in an interview with Nouvelles Parc Extension News. They re trying to raise funds to create a day centre for all FILIA s activities. We should all support this cause as much as we can. One cool walk Ever optimistic, Park Extension city councillor Mary Deros noted that the This is an excellent and a very good cause. First the golden agers have this chance to get together and show their solidarity. Pagonis said FILIA s meals on wheels program is an especially outstanding example of a FILIA service that will benefit from the Walk A Thon. Supporting FILIA People who for one reason or another cannot cook their own meals depend on this and it the least that can be offered. Pagonis also said he fully supports FILIA s current efforts to find a permanent locale it can truly call home. As things now stand, the group is headquartered in the City of Montreal s Ogilvy Ave. chalet which is also used by other groups. We owe it to the people who have reached a certain age, Pagonis continued. These are people who gave everything they had for their community, they raised children and contributed to society so now it s our turn to give back to them. Two of FILIA s volunteers prepared souvlaki for the Walk A Thon participants when they returned for lunch. Holding umbrellas, FILIA Walk A Thon participants make their way past the corner of Ogilvy and Stuart avenues in Park Extension. PHOTOS: Martin C. If you re both single, re-bonding could be delay. Protect ongoing projects from supply shortages, delays, indecision and misunderstandings. A former a good idea. (Use your own judgement, though it you fought constantly, for instance, or it was an abusive relationship, ignore teacher, lover, spouse, lawyer, school, or international contact/venture could re-appear. This is probably a good thing in my advice.) Romance continues to be a noticeable theme in your life, but by Thursday you start a seven-week swell in chores and fact, it could be you who does the re-appearing, you who seeks him/her/it out rather than the other way around. That s duties. At the same time, you start a four-week phase of serious relationships. Try not to let your work undermine your loved one s fine, too. Two thing happen this Thursday, though their effects might be subtle and take time to build. First, 5 months of comfort. Sunday s mellow, wise, love thrives so do travel, publishing, law, education. Be ambitious Mon./Tues. (But remember, money delays end, helping restore your income. Second, the weeks ahead, to mid-november, make marriage and partnerships restrictive and burdensome; you might now see the downside or bad side of a mate or potential mate avoid start nothing instead, be duteous, show off skills, meet with higher-ups you ll easily overcome any problems.) Notte In Bianco raises $350,000 for kids mental health Vince and Maria Guzzo refocus their philanthropic efforts M a r t i n C. B a r ry PHOTOS: Martin C. Barry Newsfirst The eighth annual Notte In Bianco, a glamorous charity event held on Sept. 10 at the Terrebonne home of the Guzzo family known for their chain of Montreal-area multi-screen movie theatres, raised $350,000 to fund new children s mental health research. A number of celebrities were among the 400 guests who paid $1,000 a ticket to take part in an event which is regarded as a must on the Montreal social calendar. White is traditionally considered de rigueur for the Notte In Bianco dress code. Sheena Easton performs The evening s star guest was Grammy Award-winning pop singer Sheena Easton who performed several numbers. Also among the guests were some of the leading lights of the Quebec business community, including Hydro Quebec board chairman Michael D. Penner. The evening was given a touch of elegance with a theme based on ballet and dance. Beginning this year, Maria and Vincent Guzzo are reorganizing the Guzzo family s charitable energies to support children s mental health research. Profits from fundraising are being distributed primarily to the non-profit Kids Write Network (KWN) which offers innovative intervention based on a narrative and therapeutic model taking place in five stages. Kids writing for kids The aim is to get children to write books for other children while sharing their experiences through the exploration of life lessons. Danielle Groleau, associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University and senior researcher at the Lady Davis Medical Institute of the Jewish General Hospital, is responsible for the research evaluating the intervention. She was among the guests at this year s Notte In Bianco. Mental health experts estimate that two out of five children are currently struggling with mental-health related issues. In collaboration with KWN, which was founded and is directed by Helen Georgaklis, Maria Guzzo wrote How to TRAIN your dreams. The aim of the book is to give children the courage to believe that they aren t alone in the world, while following their dreams and remembering that there is always hope. Taking preventive measures As parents of five children, their well-being is our priority, said Maria Guzzo. This is why we would like to help improve the lives of as many children as possible who may be affected by mental health issues. We would like to do this through the use of preventive measures, so that they never have to experience the negative repercussions of mental illness. Let s raise children with the necessary tools to curb the effects of a difficult childhood. As part of their philanthropic pursuits, the Guzzo family financed the imaging unit in the Jewish General s Pavilion K emergency department, the new critical care wing at the hospital. The unit features high-tech, dedicated radiology Vince and Maria Guzzo have raised more than $2 million for medical research over the past eight years through their Notte In Bianco event. A longstanding Notte In Bianco tradition, guests arriving were served champagne in preparation for an evening of dining and entertainment. Ballet was the theme of the 2015 Notte In Bianco. and tomography rooms. Test wait times reduced The imaging unit was created to better accommodate patients from the emergency department and to provide a more functional work environment for health professionals. The unit reduces test wait times for patients in the emergency department, thus shortening the radiology department s waiting list for patients from external clinics. Prior to the opening of the new imaging unit, 60 per cent of the available time at the JGH s Dr. Danielle Groleau, a health behaviour researcher at the Jewish General Hospital, Marie-Hélène Doucet, a PhD candidate and Katherine Pizarro, another PhD candidate, were special guests representing the cause now supported by the Guzzos for research to improve children s mental health. Former TV host Sonia Benezra (second from left) is seen here with other guests during Vince and Maria Guzzo s Notte In Bianco fundraiser last week. radiology department was being used by the emergency department, resulting in a very long waiting list for patients from external clinics. The Guzzo family has also expressed a serious intention to finance an imaging unit at the new Shriners Hospital for Children.
