3 ELECTIONS EDITION In this special edition of the Quid Novi, you will find the candidate messages with respect to the upcoming elections for the LSA Executive, 2L and 3L Class Presidents, Class Valedictorian for the 2015 Convocation, as well as the referendum regarding the McGill Journal of Dispute Resolution (MJDR). 4 PRÉSIDENT VINCENT-PIERRE FULLERTON The LSA s goal is simple: to make your life easier and better. I want that to actually happen. If elected President, I will prioritize action. To do so, I will be available, listen attentively to the interests of the student body and of particular groups, and work to get the realisations you want to see happen actually effected. Here is what I propose: Priorité : santé mentale Le conseil de l AÉD a approuvé un plan d action pour dépenser les 50,000$ en santé mentale. Voici ce que je propose : - Mettre en œuvre le plan d action d ici septembre 2015 en travaillant étroitement avec le Comité en santé mentale (dont j ai fait partie cette année) - Créer et adopter une politique de santé mentale à longterme, centrée sur des actions concrètes - Démarrer un projet-pilote de lieu de travail actif en achetant des machines de type treadmill-desk et standing-desk Capital improvements - Reclaim the basement by revamping the lounge, improving lighting and painting the walls in brighter colours - Buy a pop-corn machine for coffehouse and events - Install public chargers for cellphones and laptops Penser autrement - Repenser notre relation avec les commanditaires pour créer des opportunités de partenariat significatives - Rendre les événements (orientation, coffeehouse) plus inclusifs en proposant également des activités alternatives Effective administration - Create an online book-exchange/marketplace for course materials - Computerize cheque requisitions and club funding requests VOTE V-P FOR P! DAN SNYDER Mes collègues: J ai bien aimé travailler pour vous pendant l année scolaire en position de sénateur du faculté de droit. Je vous demande maintenant de me permettre de vous représenter comme président de L AÉD/LSA. My Record: I was a key figure in promoting the Sexual Assault Policy at the Senate. I ve also advocated for solutions to Mental Health issues including a successful policy change for students transcripts. Lastly, I listened to complaints from students and had a stop sign installed at the dangerous intersection of Dr. Penfield and des Pins. For more information, you can check out my report in the Mar. 31st edition of the Quid. Les buts pour l année prochaine: Cost-Saving Measures: Orientation week should be accessible to all students. Reducing ticket prices is achievable if we scale back the scope of the Welcome Ball to fit within a smaller budget, like the Grad Ball. Mental Health: I would help oversee the Mental Health audit that will take place next year, making sure that we are using our resources wisely. Les initiatives des étudiants: Je vais continuer en ma capacité d un liason entre l administration QN 7 APRIL et les étudiants. Je veux supporter les efforts de nos étudiants. En face des mesures d austerité, je pense qu on peut contribuer nos talents et nos idées en améliorant McGill. Par exemple, je veux faciliter les discussions sur les sujets comme les heures d entrainement pour les femmes. We are lucky to have such an eager and dedicated cohort of students. I m a peoples person - I have been manager of a hostel this summer, so I know how to make everyone as comfortable/happy/satisfied as possible, tout en gérant plusieurs choses à la fois I get around - Mes expériences très variées à la Faculté Skit Nite Committee, Avocats sans frontières Exec committee, Pro-Bono, L.E.X., etc. - me permettent de savoir ce qu il faut garder, améliorer, ainsi que les nouveaux projets qui pourraient rendre la Faculté encore plus agréable! First, I would like to install a big calendar in the Atrium where all the monthly activities would be shown free lunches, club events, sponsored coffeehouse, etc, anything included in the Listserv. 2. STEPHANIE FELDMAN ABOUT ME My name is Stephanie Feldman and I am a 1L from Ottawa, Ontario. I have an B.A. (Honours) in Political Science from Carleton University and I spent four years working on Parliament Hill during my studies in a variety of capacities. Je m intéresse à la position de VP Admin de l Association des étudiant-e-s en droit de McGill pour plusieurs raisons. I hope to bring my past experience to the table to improve the quality of LSA communications and facilitate the inner workings of the LSA. EXPÉRIENCE - À McGill, je suis bénévole avec le Réseau national d étudiant(e)s pro bono, ambassadrice étudiante, et commissaire de la révision des règlements à l Association étudiante de l université McGill (SSMU). - As the Vice-President Internal and President of my undergraduate law society, I communicated important events, deadlines, and information to our members. Under my leadership, we organized an undergraduate mooting tournament and held numerous events. - Pour plusieurs années, j ai travaillé avec le public dans les deux langues officielles, ce qui me permettra de communiquer avec tous les étudiant-e-s de la faculté. - As a Councillor for the student association in my previous studies, I represented the interests of 9,000 students. GOALS - All year I have been listening to law students complain about the dozens of s we get from various faculty bodies. 6 ANDY NAGY Dear students, My name is Andy Nagy and I am running for the position of VP Administration. We are all here for a particular set of reasons. On est ici parce qu on a quelque chose à partager. As a candidate for the position of VP Administration, I intend to foster our uniqueness and make it shine. C est d autant plus important pour moi qu on ait une faculté qui favorise un esprit de famille, car on partage des ambitions similaires. En tant que candidat pour le poste de VP Administration, je veux vous représenter aussi fidèlement que possible dans des comités dont j espère avoir l occasion d être membre. Pour ce faire, j aimerais favoriser la présence d un dialogue entre vous et votre AÉD. I would like to make the minutes of meetings more accessible and transparent. De plus, je voudrais vous donner plusieurs opportunités, en ligne et en personne, pour vous exprimer. Ultimately, I want us to cooperate and get to know each other. I want to begin with reorganizing the way information is communicated to you. Together with other executives, I will work to make the content of LISTSERV s easier to navigate and more appealing to the eye. I will also focus my attention on improving the content and appearance of the LSA s Facebook page and website. Through my experience as a coordinator of communications at my CEGEP, I was in charge of advertising for all sorts of events in conjunction with the school s faculty and staff. Beyond my ability to remain organized, I thoroughly enjoyed creating posters, videos and other media content. As VP Administration, I want to bring a similar range of content to the faculty. I want the diversity of our student body to be represented in that media content in order to promote inclusivity. Cheers, Andy Nagy ANNE-SOPHIE OUELLET Je m appelle Anne-Sophie et je me présente au poste de VP académique. J ai complété un baccalauréat en philosophie et je suis toujours fascinée par les questions qui entourent l enseignement et ses politiques et qui concernent éminemment notre Faculté. J ai déjà occupé le poste de VP académique à l Université Laval et j ai profité de cette expérience pour apprendre à défendre les positions des étudiant-es et à faire le lien entre le corps professoral et étudiant. La réforme constitue une occasion sans égale de représenter les étudiant-es de la Faculté et leurs intérêts. Une telle révision présuppose une réflexion substantielle sur la nature de l enseignement universitaire et sa place dans notre société. Les propositions faites par le corps professoral concernant le curriculum ainsi que le système de notation doivent être sérieusement étudiées, que ce soit sur les modalités d application des experiential learning, sur la taille des groupes, sur les évaluations, sur le bilinguisme dans les classes, sur les offres de cours ou encore sur les cours obligatoires du programme. En ce sens, je me propose de faire le lien avec les professeurs, de vous consulter sur ces questions et de soumettre vos opinions au conseil facultaire. In order to truly represent the interests of the students, I propose to create a forum for student consultation, whether it be at QN 7 APRIL VP ACADÉMIQUE the Faculty or via social media. As VP Academic, I will dedicate myself to listen and to meet you, understand what move you and motivate you. However, the only way I can do that genuinely is to create a space allotted to those discussions so that the academic and practical interests of the students can be taken seriously. In brief, I am thorough and dedicated, critical and very much interested in what you all have to say. I would be proud to represent you for the coming school year and hope you will entrust me for this position.

7 VP PUBLIC RELATIONS RACHELLE BASTARACHE Hi everyone! My name is Rachelle Bastarache and I m a 1L who s hoping to represent you as the Vice President Public Relations next year. The VP PR is responsible for soliciting law firm and corporate event sponsorship and funding- basically, all that free stuff you get? Yeah that s the VP PR s doing. With tons of experience in event management and sponsorship solicitation, I think I could expand this portfolio by reaching out to not just large firms, but also other interest groups that the students of McGill Law care about. Sponsored coffeehouses? How about actual sponsored coffee breaks in the morning as well? That isn t currently an option in the sponsorship package, but you bet I m going to put it in. J ai pris connaissance de la liste des commanditaires qu on utilise présentement et j aimerais bien l agrandir pour qu elle reflète mieux les intérêts des étudiants. Comme on ne veut pas tous travailler pour des gros cabinets, on devrait agrandir notre portée pour solliciter des commandites dans des nombreux domaines des cabinets, des programmes d études de deuxième cycle, des groupes de consultation, des compagnies Fortune 500 etc. J aimerais travailler avec le CDO pour évaluer de nouvelles opportunités. As I mentioned, I do have a lot of experience in this type of portfolio. In 2011, I was the fundraising co-ordinator for the Children s Wish Foundation of New Brunswick where I was responsible for a $1.34 million sponsorship and solicitation portfolio. In that role, I learned a lot about how to market to larger companies, as well as the value of in-kind sponsorships. MATTEO NATALE The Vice President of Public Relations plays a crucial role in our Student Association and is one of the pillars that supports Faculty life in general. Specifically, the VP of PR is in charge of, and I quote, soliciting law firm and corporate event sponsorship [&] coordinating all sponsored events, including but not limited to, coffeehouses with the sponsoring organization. Essentially, the VP-PR is the link between students and law firms. I think we can all agree that sponsored coffeehouses are awesome, and I would love to be a part of the team that brings joy to all law students with their baskets of food and beverages. With recent economic cutbacks in all areas, however, traditional sponsors are more and more reluctant to invest in exposing themselves to our faculty. Thus, it will be my primordial objective to maintain and, if possible, grow the amount of funding our faculty receives for sponsored events. organizations are great opportunities for students to gain experience and ought to be in the spotlight of exposure as well. 8 JIA BAO WU Bonjour McGill Law! I am Jia Bao Wu et je souhaite vous servir l an prochain à titre de Vice-Président en Relations publiques. Les responsabilités propres à cette position sont reconnues par plusieurs comme exigeantes. Je suis toutefois confiant que je suis le mieux placé pour entreprendre ces tâches. Ayant participé à l organisation de la semaine d orientation l été passé, j ai rapidement senti l importance du rôle à jouer du VP Relations publiques dans le financement des coffres de l AÉD. For the upcoming year, I plan to increase FUNDINGS by reaching out to other types of contributors. Increasing our revenues will ultimately benefit everyone at the faculty including our various clubs, a vital component of McGill Law, who would finally receive the proper funding that they have been wishing for. With my entrepreneurial experience, I will solicit sponsorships from commercial entities, restaurants and other alternate institutions. It is also time to revise and clarify the offer bundles that we send out to our traditional partners, our primary source of revenue. Not only do I intend to maintain a good relationship with them but we can also receive more from their limited budget. COORDINATION issues in the scheduling of the various firm-led events need to be solved as well. With my coaching experiences, I will work with board members of the McGill Business Law Association and the CDO to prevent conflicts of schedule. The tasks at the LSA Executive s hands next year will be heavy. Être un membre PROACTIF au sein de l exécutif du AÉD sera crucial pour inspirer mes collègues. Les événements tels que Coffeehouse, Orientation Week, et Skit Nite ont vraiment enrichi mon expérience ici à McGill, et j espère continuer de «laisser les bon temps rouler» avec vous tous comme votre représentante au LSA-AÉD! I have some fun & quirky new ideas that I hope will capture your imagination: 1. Offer a series of outdoorsy activities throughout the year free for everyone! Why? Get outside, discover Montreal, meet new law buddies. Beach volleyball at Parc Jeanne Mance Randonnées et observation des oiseaux au Mont Royal Pick-up hockey games in the winter Patinage au Vieux-Port Bike rides to a fun location like the Biodome or Botanical Gardens 2. Coffeehouse for a Cause donate proceeds from one annual coffeehouse to an organization supported by the LSA (pour example, Chez Doris, le Old Brewery Mission, ou c est à vous de decider!) Why? Pay it forward. 3. Boost the ambiance at coffeehouse Why? A more vibrant space. Set up some tall tables for people to place their drinks and chat Coffeehouse mugs in all colours of the rainbow! Funky freaky hip & chic themed playlists 4. Living garden in the Atrium Why? Sustainability; a little ray of sunshine during long winters; spices for meals during long days on campus. RAY GRAFTON Bonjour, mon nom est Ray Grafton et je me présente pour le poste de VP Interne - Ongoing Events. This past year, the outgoing LSA executive has done a terrific job of managing a difficult situation of not having access to Old Chancellor Day Hall. As VP Internal, I intend to build on their successes and hope to be able to bring even more energy to student life here at the faculty. The major responsibilities of the position I am running for are to ensure that our weekly coffeehouses run smoothly and to plan the orientation week but the job also includes representing the interests of the student body on the LSA executive. This is a duty that I take very seriously. I have a great deal of experience organizing, serving at, cleaning up after and attending at our coffeehouses and other student events. Over the past year, I have worked very hard organizing events at the faculty (KM for a Cause) and supported student initiatives (women-only hours at the gym); as VP Internal Ongoing Events you can count on me to listen to your voices and help you make your experience at McGill Law the best it can possibly be. 10 LAUREN HANON Bonjour, je m appelle Lauren Hanon et je suis candidate pour le poste de VP Internal (ongoing events). Je complète en ce moment ma première année à la faculté et j ai grandement apprécié les Coffeehouses auxquels j ai assistés. Cela m a par ailleurs donné plusieurs idées pour rendre les Coffeehouses de la prochaine année encore plus excitants! J aimerais notamment diversifier les types de Coffeehouse et ainsi créer de nouvelles opportunités de réseautage. My hope is to offer networking opportunities that will cater more to the diversity of career interests among students. In addition to the firm-sponsored Coffeehouses, I will reach out to other organizations, like NGOs and non-profits, and have them host a Coffeehouse in conjunction with a corresponding club. This kind of event will not only allow different organizations to advertise their legal opportunities, but it would also allow for students who are not interested in a firm job to learn of alternative opportunities and to ask questions with real representatives in the fun and social atmosphere of Coffeehouse. You might be wondering, How could these kinds of organizations afford to host a coffeehouse? My plan is to have them host Coffeehouse with a club, and not sponsor the entire event. The details would be up to the clubs and groups! Another question might be, Would these events take away from the firm-sponsored Coffeehouses? My answer is a definite No! I want to increase networking opportunities all across the board! J ai une expérience considérable en planification évènementielle et je crois pour cette raison être la candidate idéale! 11 ANDRÉE-ANNE DION Bonjour à tous! VP INTERNAL - SPECIAL EVENTS Je suis actuellement en 1ère année et je me présente pour le poste de VP-Internal Special Events. Ayant participé à la majorité des activités organisées cette année et étant passionnée par la culture québécoise et toutes les possibilités qu elle nous offre, je suis extrêmement intéressée par le poste et je pense avoir l expérience et les qualités nécessaires pour relever ce défi! I have always tried to involve myself as much as I can in my school, by being in the organization committee for my bachelor s 10 years anniversary or by leading UQÀM s delegation to the Simulation du Parlement européen. But mostly, I always try to participate in as many social and cultural events as possible because I love to meet new people and try new things. Selon moi, une grande partie de l expérience universitaire se passe hors des murs de la faculté. En effet, c est lors de ces évènements que nous pouvons rencontrer des étudiants des autres années, mais surtout, que nous pouvons décrocher un peu et profiter des attraits du Québec! If I have the chance to be your VP-Social events next year, I would like to organize the traditional events that have become favorites, like the sugar shack, apple picking and the ski trip, but I would also like to try new activities that YOU want to do. Therefore, I want to survey the faculty to see what kind of activities interests you and would attract the most participants. Also, I think a relation with the other law faculties of Québec could be fun, so I would like to organize a party with them so we can meet other students and create links between all the future jurists of Québec. Essentially, my goal would be to make sure you have as much fun as possible! SHY SHALEV Salut! et le party «Welcome Back», en plus de vous proposer de nombreuses nouvelles opportunités de prendre une pause des cours et de l étude. My name is Shy Shalev, I am in 2L, and I am running for the position of VP-Internal Special Events. As VP-Internal, I intend to make life at the faculty more exciting by providing fun opportunities to take a break from our crazy study schedules. This past winter, I served as captain of the McGill Law Games team, where I handled most of the organizational aspects of the team, including fundraising, merchandise, and team management. En m élisant VP-Interne évènements spéciaux, vous me permettrez de mettre à contribution mes compétences acquises en tant que responsable de l équipe de Jeux Ridiques. En tant que VP Interne, je compte faciliter la transition avec les prochains capitaines des Jeux Ridiques et assurer une relation harmonieuse de cette équipe avec l AÉD. Notre faculté étant composée d étudiants provenant d horizons multiples avec des backgrounds et des intérêts variés. Dans ce cadre, en plus d aider aux Jeux Ridiques, j organiserai pour vous des activités diversifiées répondant à tous les goûts, autant juridiques que ludiques. J assurerai bien entendu la pérennité d événements forts appréciés, tels que le voyage cabanes à sucre As VP-Internal, I will work closely with next year s clubs to create more inclusive, farther-reaching events. I would also like to take advantage of Montreal s extensive theatre scene and organize group rates to see shows, both in French and English. For those looking for more law-oriented excursions, I am planning a day-trip to Ottawa to visit the Supreme Court, among other things. I pride myself on my organizational skills and would love the opportunity to share my creativity and ideas with the rest of the faculty. 12 VP EXTERNE FARNELL MORISSET If you re following recent news, you can probably guess we re likely to have a complicated spring, summer, and fall. The student protest movement is likely to grow, and outside groups are going to try pressuring us to meet their interests. Dealing with these groups will be my job as VP External of the LSA/AÉD. Previously, I was the VP External and then President of my 660-member student association in the lead-up to the last round of student strikes in I ve been through this before and know what to expect. As VP External of the LSA/AÉD, I will make sure that it is only our choices that will determine our actions. Deuxièmement, je crois que l AÉD/LSA doit s affirmer à l extérieur de la faculté. Finally, law students should know the LSA/AÉD has their back when they re trying to make their greater community better. We ve seen two of our students push forward an initiative for women-only hours at the gym this semester, only to have their discussions ended by a unilateral decision on discriminatory grounds by McGill s administration. As VP External, I will make sure the LSA/AÉD assures law students are treated with fairness and respect throughout the university and defend them whenever they face discrimination. Ayant été présidente de conseils étudiants et représentente étudiante au conseil d établissement et à la Commission scolaire, je suis plus que familière avec la représentation étudiante et connais l importance et la portée d une voix collective au sein de celle-ci. Je reconnais, toutefois, que cette voix n est forte que lorsqu elle s élève d une prise de décision commune, d un dialogue entre représentants et corps étudiant. Ainsi, en plus de représenter nos préoccupations et positions, je compte être la porte d entrée pour la tenue de discussions sur des enjeux, qui quoique soulevés à l externe, nous concernent tous.
