3 The President s Message Message du Président 4 5 Greetings The year 2006 was what I refer to as a banner year for FISU and its membership. During this fantastic year, FISU and all of the cities who have played host to our twenty eight championships are to be heartedly congratulated for their efforts. The cities that have played this major role in this special year came from the far corners of the globe. Thousands upon thousands of university students that came from our membership for these championships were afforded a wonderful experience in having the opportunity to engage in high level university competition as well as the additional opportunity of meeting new university students from around the world. I and others of the FISU Family had the pleasure to share and play a role in many of the championships. For us this has been a wonderful opportunity as it afforded each of us the chance to not only assume a role in a championship but it further allowed us to meet and visit with the many wonderful athletes and administrators from our membership. A joy that was much appreciated by all. The year 2006 has been an extremely busy year for all of us in FISU. Since the successful completion of the FISU Rectors Forum in Bangkok in July, our sights have been focussed on the bidding cities for both the Winter and Summer Universiades for the year Special evaluation committees comprised of a number of FISU Executive Committee Members along with the Secretary General and Director General of FISU made inspection visits to the cities of Maribor, Solvenia, Erzurum, Turkey; candidates for Winter Universiades, as well as visits to Poznan, Poland; Kazan, Russia; Murcia, Spain; Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei; Shenzhen, China. All this was done in preparation for the next FISU Executive Committee meeting in Torino, Italy where the final decision on whom will host the 2011 Winter and Summer Universiade will be made. My thanks to all of the members who were part of these committees for the giving of their time to carry on such an important assignment for the well being of the future of FISU. In early January of 2007, the city of Torino, Italy, will play a host to the 23rd Winter Universiade. A meeting of the Heads of Delegations of countries that will participate in Torino was held in early September of At that time all of us in attendance were afforded the opportunity to view all of the venues as well as the Athletes Village, and to receive from the local organising committee the answers to all of our questions. I sincerely believe that we can look forward to a very 2006, is a year that will go down in the history of FISU, as one of the most productive of all times in university sport history successful Winter Universiade in Torino. Torino has hosted many important international sporting events over the years with great success. I am sure the 23rd Winter Universiade will be the latest; I shall look forward to meeting and greeting many of you in Torino. In conclusion, let me again assure you that after our very important visit to Bangkok, Thailand, during the first week of November of this year, that we believe the change of leadership in Bangkok will not affect the outcome of Summer Universiade I sent to each of you a report on our visit. As I said in that report and I repeat again, I believe Summer Universiade Bangkok 2007 will be a huge success, just like we planned from the very beginning. I hope that each and every one of our members is busy with their plans to be in Bangkok in August of I look forward with great anticipation to greeting you personally at that time. KILLIAN FISU President Meilleurs voeux. L année 2006 fut réellement une année phare, pour notre fédération et tous ses membres. La FISU et toutes les villes qui ont accueilli nos 28 championnats tout au long de ces douze mois peuvent être fières du travail accompli. Les villes qui ont joué ce rôle majeur sont dispersées aux quatre coins du globe. Plusieurs milliers d étudiants universitaires s y sont rassemblés lors de ces manifestations. Ce fut pour eux, une expérience unique et enrichissante qui leur offrit l occasion de concourir lors de compétitions universitaires de haut niveau leur permettant également de rencontrer des étudiants venus du monde entier. Des membres de la famille FISU et moimême, avons eu l opportunité de participer à bon nombre de ces championnats. Pour nous tous, ce fut une chance, non seulement d assumer un rôle dans l organisation de ces tournois, mais aussi, d aller à la rencontre de ces athlètes et de ces administrateurs qui sont tous des dignes représentants de nos fédérations membres. Ce furent réellement des moments de joie partagés par tous. L année 2006 fut très chargée pour la FISU. Souvenons-nous du magnifique succès du Forum des Recteurs qui avait lieu à Bangkok en juillet dernier. Tous nos regards se sont tournés ensuite vers les villes candidates à l organisation de nos Universiades d Hiver et d Été Une commission spéciale d évaluation fut chargée d effectuer des visites d inspection de ces différents sites. Composée de certains membres de notre Comité Exécutif ainsi que de notre Secrétaire Général et de notre Directeur Général, cette commission s est rendue à Maribor, en Slovénie et à Erzurum en Turquie. Ces deux villes sont candidates pour l Universiade d Hiver. La commission a également voyagé à Poznan, en Pologne, à Kazan, en Russie, à Murcie, en Espagne, à Kaohsiung, en Chine Taipeh et enfin, à Shenzhen, en Chine. Toutes ces villes sont, quant à elles, candidates pour l Universiade d Été. Ce travail préparatoire fait partie du processus d attribution qui se terminera lors de notre prochaine réunion du Comité Exécutif qui aura lieu à Turin. C est là que la décision finale sera prise. Je voudrais remercier tous les membres de cette commission qui ont donné de leur temps pour préparer cette attribution ô combien importante pour notre avenir. Au début du mois de janvier 2007, la ville de Turin, Italie, sera le théâtre de la 23e Universiade d Hiver. En septembre 2006, une réunion des chefs de missions des pays qui participeront à l Universiade fut organisée à Turin. À cette occasion, les délégués purent inspecter les infrastructures sportives et d accueil ainsi que le Village des Athlètes. Le Comité d Organisation répondit, enfin, à toutes leurs questions. Nous en avons eu la confirmation lors d une importante réunion qui s est déroulée la première semaine de novembre à Bangkok même. J ai envoyé à chacun de vous un rapport concernant cette visite. Je vous le répète encore une fois, je pense que l Universiade d Été de 2007 organisée à Bangkok sera un énorme succès; cela nous le pensions auparavant et le pensons encore aujourd hui. J espère vous rencontrer nombreux lors de cette Universiade organisée au mois d août prochain à Bangkok. Encore une fois je voudrais vous inviter à me contacter ou à contacter le bureau de Bruxelles pour toute question relative à votre voyage à Bangkok. 4 World University Championships Futsal The Russian Experience 7 1 The Polish city of Poznan, which has applied to hold the Universiade in 2011 and has already organized World University Championships in Cross country (1990) and Rowing (1992 and 2000), is back in the headlines by taking charge of the 10th World University Futsal Championship Russia showed unrivalled control, as it became World University Champion for the third time in It s true, we have already held 10 editions for this sport that maintains its popularity as years go by. In fact, FISU now systematically has to make a selection to choose the 16 participating teams (out of 30 that show their interest). The previous edition took place in Palma de Mallorca 2004 and the tournament went to the Ukraine, drawing on its great experience to successfully counter the Brazilian charge. With 20 national and private schools of higher education and about 110,000 students, Poznan is one of Poland s largest university centres. The city has a good number of sports infrastructures, and although it has relatively little experience of futsal, participants could count on the organizing skills of the Polish association (AZS), which has always been outstanding for its professionalism when it comes to hosting FISU meets. The World University Futsal Championship has now become a full-fledged event in the International Football Federation (FIFA) calendar, and is gradually becoming a notto-be-missed appointment. This year again, the tournament was full up as the 16 slots were quickly allocated in the selection in June For the third time in 10 editions, four continents were represented. In all, 41 different countries have met at FISU futsal championships since 1982! FUTSAL 2006 Poznan Poland 10th World University Championship The participating teams played at a very high level, from both the tactical and technical points of view. The eight best teams not surprisingly took the eight first places, but it was striking to see the Polish hosts among the top four, which goes to show the considerable progress this country has made in just a few years. The same coach was working with 8 of the teams he is the one who normally trains the national A team, and more than half of the teams included international players, which is another way to recognize the high standard of the FISU championships. Another very positive point is that they were not really any «weak» teams they all had real potential including those that came for the first time: China, Kyrghyzstan and Morocco. Avec 20 écoles supérieures nationales ou privées et environ étudiants, Poznan est un des plus grands centres universitaires de Pologne. La ville possède de nombreuses infrastructures sportives et bien que son expérience dans le domaine du futsal fut assez réduite, les participants ont pu compter sur la compétence de l Association Sportive Universitaire de Pologne (AZS). Celle-ci s est, en effet, toujours distinguée par son professionnalisme lorsqu il s est agi d accueillir des compétitions de la FISU. Désormais partie intégrante du calendrier de la Fédération internationale de Football (FIFA), le Championnat du Monde Universitaire de Futsal devient petit à petit un rendez-vous incontournable. Une fois encore, en effet, ce tournoi fit le plein d équipes puisque les seize places furent vite attribuées lors de la sélection qui eut lieu en juin Il faut remarquer également que quatre continents étaient représentés, c est la troisième fois en dix éditions. Au total, ce sont 41 pays différents qui se sont croisés aux championnats de futsal de la FISU depuis 1982! Le niveau des formations présentes était très bon, et, cela, tant d un point de vue tactique que technique. Un autre point très positif est qu il n y a plus, à proprement parler, d équipes faibles. Toutes avaient un réel potentiel, même celles qui étaient là pour la première fois comme ce fut le cas de la Chine, du Kirghizistan et du Maroc. Avec 462 buts inscrits (un record), pour une moyenne de 9.63 par rencontre, ce championnat a aussi assuré le spectacle, et cela, pour le plus grand bonheur des spectateurs venus y assister. La finale fut d ailleurs retransmise en direct par la télévision régionale mais aussi par la nationale. La finale, parlons-en, fut un très beau duel. Elle mit en présence une équipe de Russie très expérimentée et disciplinée et l équipe du Brésil médaillée d argent en Fidèle à son habitude, la formation brésilienne se porta très souvent à l attaque mais elle se

Dans le match pour la troisième place, l équipe d Ukraine, tenante du titre, noya les espoirs de médaille nourris par l équipe locale. La formation polonaise, bien que jouant crânement sa chance, ne put rien contre les attaquants ukrainiens qui marquèrent les quatre buts de la victoire. Score final: 4-1. Ainsi se termina cette compétition qui fut de l avis général un magnifique succès. Le niveau du futsal universitaire est en hausse constante et la FISU est fière de participer activement à cette progression. Rendez-vous, en 2008, à Koper, en Slovénie, pour le onzième Championnat du Monde Universitaire de Futsal. 9 15,000 spectators. The final was broadcast live on regional and national television. In the match for the third-place, Ukraine, the defending champion, quickly dashed any hopes of a medal for the locals. The Polish team played boldly and well, but couldn t stand up to the Ukrainian forwards who scored the four winning goals. Final score: 4-1. All participants agree: this was a great meet and a magnificent success. University futsal is getting better and better and FISU is proud to have contributed to that progress. 6 The First Time in Nigeria World University Championships Chess CHESS 2006 Lagos Nigeria 9th World University Championship NUGA, standing for the Nigerian University Games Association, has been a member of FISU since 1969, but had not yet been involved in organizing a World University Championship. That s all in the past now, since the city of Lagos was the venue of the ninth edition of the World University Chess This first in Lagos is testimony to the enlargement in the distribution of our championships all over the world Championship. We are very happy that more and more countries, particularly in Africa, are showing their interest for these events and endeavouring to find the needed budgets to set them up. Organizing the World University Championship in Nigeria, when the country was experiencing difficult times, really was not an easy thing to do, but Mr. Shadrak Adeoti, FISU Assessor and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, with Mr. Ibrahim Isyaku, President of NUGA, took the risk. They both made even greater efforts to render the competition more accessible by reducing the entry fees (for African countries) and reassuring participants on safety conditions. Despite all this, we could only observe that great chess playing nations like Russia and Georgia were absent, and many other delegations desisted. But that was not enough to discourage the local Organizing Committee. It did everything it could to ensure smooth operation of the tournament and a warm and pleasant welcome for the eight delegations present. Although chess is not a sport in the usual sense of the word, it is highly appreciated in academic circles and the World University Chess Championships are by and large very successful. After Odessa in 1990, Antwerp in 1992, Sofia in 1994, Leon in 1996, Rotterdam in 1998, Varna in 2000 and Ulaanbaatar in 2002, the eighth edition of the World University Chess Championship was held in 2004 in Istanbul, Turkey. With 9 Grand Masters, 11 International Masters and 6 FIDE Masters for the ladies, the Istanbul edition was very competitive and dominated by the Russians. In Lagos, in the absence of the Russian team, the Chinese took over for them very handsomely in all three categories. The level was quite high, with 4 Grand Masters, 1 International Master and 6 FIDE (International Chess Federation) Masters in the men s tournament and 1 Grand Master, 4 International Masters and 2 FIDE Masters for the women. The tournament was organized playing the FIDE rules. Men and women played in two separate categories in a nine-round Swiss tournament. Classification by team was also calculated on the basis of total results of four players (two in each category) chosen at the start. Affiliée à la FISU depuis 1969, la NUGA pour Nigerian Universitiy Games Association ne s était pas encore impliquée dans l organisation d un Championnat du Monde Universitaire. C est aujourd hui chose faite puisque la ville de Lagos fut le théâtre de la neuvième édition du Championnat du Monde Universitaire d Échecs. Cette première à Lagos témoigne de l élargissement qui s opère dans la distribution de nos championnats à travers le monde. Nous sommes très heureux que de plus en plus de pays, notamment d Afrique, affichent leur intérêt envers ces manifestations et fassent tout leur possible pour réunir les budgets nécessaires à leur réalisation. Il n était pourtant pas réellement évident d organiser un Championnat du Monde Universitaire dans ce pays qui traverse une période troublée. Le pari de M. Shadrak Adeoti, assesseur de la FISU et Président du Comité d Organisation ainsi que de M. Ibrahim Isyaku, Président de la NUGA, était osé. Tous les deux ont multiplié les efforts pour rendre leur compétition plus accessible en diminuant les droits de participation (pour les pays PARTICIPATION H/M F/W OFF TOT 1 BEL CHN GHA IRI NED NGR SUI TPE total africains) et en rassurant les participants sur les conditions de sécurité. Malgré cela, nous fûmes forcés de constater l absence des grandes nations des échecs comme la Russie et la Géorgie et le désistement de nombreuses autres délégations. Mais il en fallait plus pour décourager le Comité d Organisation local. Celui-ci mit tout en oeuvre pour assurer la bonne tenue de ce tournoi et pour accueillir le mieux possible les huit délégations présentes. Il faut dire que même s il n est pas un sport à proprement parler, le jeu d échecs est très prisé dans les milieux académiques et les Championnats du Monde Universitaires d Échecs sont presque toujours une réussite. À Lagos, en l absence des joueurs et joueuses russes, ce sont les Chinois qui se sont imposés, de fort belle manière, dans les trois catégories. Le niveau était relativement élevé puisque l on enregistra la présence de 4 Grands Maîtres, 1 Maître International et 6 Maîtres FIDE (pour Fédération Internationale des Échecs) dans le tournoi masculin et de 1 Grand Maître, 4 Maîtres Internationaux et 2 Maîtres FIDE chez les dames. Le tournoi fut organisé selon les règles de la FIDE. Les hommes et les femmes jouèrent dans deux catégories séparées basées sur le principe du tournoi suisse en 9 tours. Une classification par équipe fut retenue Cette première à Lagos témoigne de l élargissement qui s opère dans la distribution de nos championnats à travers le monde également reprenant la somme des résultats de 4 joueurs (2 dans chaque catégorie) sélectionnés dès le départ. Dans le tournoi masculin, la médaille d or revint au Chinois Bu Xiangzhi et la médaille d argent à son compatriote Ni Hua. Ces deux joueurs, qui se connaissent bien, étudient les finances et l économie à l Université de Shanghai. Obtenant le même nombre de points, ils furent départagés par le système de Tie-Break Bucholz/Median. Comme à Istanbul en 2004, la médaille de bronze revint au joueur iranien Ghaemmaghami Ehsan (de l Université de Azad) avec 7 points. Le tournoi féminin fut dominé par la joueuse chinoise Gong Qiangyun (elle aussi étudie à Shanghai) avec 7 points. La joueuse iranienne Salman Mahini Mona (de l université d Azad) et la Chinoise Zhang Jing terminèrent toutes deux sur la marque de 6.5 points. Le Tie-Break Bucholz/Median les

Both players are studying finance and economics at Shanghai University and they know each other well. They both obtained the same number of points and had to be separated by the Bucholz/Median Tie-Break system. Like in Istanbul in 2004, the bronze medal went to Iranian Ghaemmaghami Ehsan (from Azad University) with 7 points. The women s tournament was led by the Chinese student Gong Qiangyun (she too studies in Shanghai) with 7 points. Iranian Salman Mahini Mona (from Azad University) and Chinese Zhang Jing both finished at 6.5 points, so the Bucholz/Median Tie-Break made the difference in favour of Salman Mahini Mona who took home the silver medal. The team ranking of course went to China with 28.5 points followed by Iran with 23.5 points and finally the Netherlands with 21.5 points. départagea au profit de Salman Mahini Mona qui remporta donc la médaille d argent. On n insistera jamais assez sur l importance que peut revêtir la venue d un Championnat du Monde Universitaire pour une fédération telle que la NUGA. C est l occasion pour tous ses dirigeants de se lancer dans une organisation parfois difficile mais souvent gratifiante et toujours enrichissante. Gageons qu elle saura tirer les enseignements de cette première expérience et se porter candidate à l organisation d une autre compétition de la FISU. It would be hard to exaggerate the importance of holding a World University Championship for a federation like NUGA since this gives the entire association an opportunity to meet a difficult, but often gratifying and always enriching challenge. We are convinced that it has learned a great deal from this first effort and we hope that it will be enthusiastic about applying for the organization of another FISU competition in the future. We meet again at the next World University Chess Championship to be held in 2008 in Novokuznetzk, Russia.

8 World University Championships Squash Great Britain at the Top SQUASH 2006 Szeged Hongrie 5ème Championnat du Monde Universitaire 15 The fifth edition of the World University Squash Championship is over. Csongrad County on the southeast border of Hungary, and specifically the city of Szeged was the venue of the competition. Located in a well preserved region, the county delights the many visitors who flock to With two gold medals and two in bronze, Great Britain was true to the tradition that makes this nation one of the international pillars of squash the 40,000 hectares of nature reserves every year. The area is famous for its thermal springs as well, that are put to good advantage in the many spas in the vicinity. Szeged Squash club with its six courts hosted the three events in the championship: men s singles, women s singles and mixed teams. This was one of a series of events set up to promote squash in the country from October 2005 to the spring of The slogan follow me to Hungary refers to seven major meets in the next three years: the Dunlop Hungarian Open, the Hungarian Klip Junior Open, the 5th Individual European Championship, the Hungarian Open, the Junior Hungarian Open, the European Junior Team Championship and, of course, the fifth World University Championship. Squash is an increasingly popular sport in Hungary, and some Hungarian players are beginning to make excellent scores on a world scale. The team event on the third day revealed the British ambitions. Lauren Siddal, Christopher Ryder and Jonathan Harford played the final against the formidable French team of Yann Perrin, Fabien Verseille and Maud Duplomb. Thanks to the talent of Lauren Siddal and Christopher Ryder, who both took their games in three straight sets, the British team earned a gold medal despite a loss by the third player, Jonathan Harford, to Yann Perrin. For the third place on the podium, the United States played South Africa. The games were much more closely matched here. Siyolisile Lusaseni gave South Africa a first, very important point thanks to her victory in three sets over Lily Lorentzen. Her teammate, South African Devon Hendrikse could only give way to Julian Illingworth (one of the best players in the tournament). So Nico Mulder had to start all over, and win at all costs against Francis Gilpin Lane to give South Africa a bronze medal. It was no easy task, but after a disastrous start, Nico Mulder pulled himself together and took the last three sets (out of five) beautifully; so the medal went to South Africa. Singles The Hungarian star player Mark Krajcsak really deserved his place in the men s singles final. Les équipes des États-unis et d Afrique du Sud se disputèrent l accès à la troisième marche du podium. Les trois matchs furent ici beaucoup plus serrés. Siyolisile Lusaseni donna à l Afrique du Sud un premier point très important grâce à sa victoire par trois sets à un face à Lily Lorentzen. Son co-équipier, le Sud-africain Devon Hendrikse ne put confirmer s inclinant face à Julian Illingworth (un des meilleurs joueurs de ce tournoi). Tout était donc à refaire pour Nico Mulder qui devait absolument remporter son match face à Francis Gilpin Lane pour pouvoir offrir à l Afrique du Sud une médaille de bronze. Ce ne fut pas facile, mais après un début catastrophique, Nico Mulder se reprit magistralement remportant les trois derniers sets (sur cinq); l Afrique du Sud remporta la médaille. Les simples Mark Krajcsak la vedette hongroise mérita tout à fait sa place en finale du simple homme. Impérial face à tous ses adversaires (il remporta tous ses matchs en trois sets secs) il afficha une confiance à toute épreuve et se posa en redoutable prétendant pour la médaille d or. Chrystopher Ryder had done just as well. Already an inter-team gold medal winner, this 26 year-old British student left not a single set for his opponents. So the final between these two exceptional players promised to be suspenseful. Mark started out strong, and it did him well, because he took the first set (9/7). Chrystopher was not to be intimidated, and squeaked by with the second set 10 to 8 and the tables were beginning to turn. In the third set, Chrystopher was intransigent as he sent his opponent to all four corners of the court, and smashed him with an unforgiving 9 to 1. Mark was not discouraged and tried to make a comeback in the fourth set, but his legs couldn t keep up with the hellish pace of his British opponent. So the fourth set gave the advantage to Chrystopher (9/4) who pocketed the gold medal and the title of World University Champion. For the ladies, Malaysian Yoke Lim was logically playing in the final, but her opponent for the day German, Kathrin Rohrmüller belied all expectations. It only made sense to find Yoke Lim at this stage of the tournament. Everyone who had seen her play during the week had nothing but praise for her talent and her control of the game. Her world rank made her the number two favourite of the tournament, just behind Canadian Katie Patrick. So, as forecasts would have it, these two should have been playing each other in the final. But that was without counting on Kathrin Rohrmüller s great shape. The surprising German player ousted Katie Patrick in the semi-finals after a superb game, and confirmed her great talent in the final. Taking her advantage at the beginning of the game, she won the first two sets with a surprising score of 9/6 and 9/1. When everyone thought that Yoke Lim had given up the ghost, she got back on track and into the game to give us a magnificent show. The next two sets were drawn out as the Malaysian just managed to snatch them at 10/8 and 10/9!. Confidence had changed sides, so Yoke Lim didn t have too much trouble taking the fifth and last set with a score of 9 to 2. Yoke Lim took home the women s title as World University Squash Champion. Finally, British Lauren Sidall won the match for third place over Canadian Katie Patrick, while, for the men, her compatriot Joel Hinds also won his game over American Julian Illingworth. Déjà médaillé d or en inter-équipe, cet étudiant britannique de 26 ans ne laissa pas le moindre set à ses opposants. La finale s annonçait donc palpitante entre ses deux joueurs d exception. Mark entra en force dans le match et cela 6 lui réussit puisqu il remporta le premier set (9/7). Chrystopher ne se laissa pas intimider empochant le deuxième set de justesse sur la marque de 10 à 8. Et déjà la partie bascula. Intraitable lors du troisième set Chrystopher envoya son adversaire aux quatre coins du court s imposant sur un cinglant 9 à 1. Pas découragé pour autant, Mark tenta bien de revenir lors de la quatrième manche, mais ses jambes ne suivaient plus le rythme infernal imposé par le joueur britannique. Ce quatrième set tourna donc à l avantage de Chrystopher (9/4) qui empocha par la même occasion la médaille d or et le titre de Champion du Monde Universitaire. Chez les dames, si la logique fut respectée quant à la présence en finale de la joueuse malaisienne Yoke Lim, son adversaire du jour, l Allemande Kathrin Rohrmüller fit, elle, mentir tous les pronostics. Il était normal en effet de retrouver Yoke Lim à ce stade du tournoi. Tous ceux qui l avaient vu jouer durant cette semaine ne purent qu être admiratifs devant son talent et sa maîtrise dans le jeu. Son classement mondial en faisait la favorite n 2 du tournoi, juste derrière la Canadienne Katie Patrick. En suivant ce schéma, les deux joueuses devaient d ailleurs se retrouver en finale. C était sans compter sur l excellente forme de Kathrin Rohrmüller, surprenante joueuse allemande qui sortit Katie Patrick en demi-finale au terme d un match superbe. La finale allait confirmer les bonnes dispositions de Kathrin. Prenant le début du match à son compte elle remporta les deux premiers sets sur la marque étonnante de 9/6 et 9/1. Alors qu on croyait Yoke Lim à la dérive, celle-ci se ressaisit et revint dans le jeu pour nous offrir un spectacle magnifique. Les deux sets suivants furent homériques et remportés d extrême justesse par la joueuse de Malaisie (10/8 et 10/9!). La confiance avait désormais changé de camp et Yoke Lim ne dut pas trop forcer pour remporter le cinquième et dernier set sur la marque de 9 à 2. Yoke Lim empocha donc le titre féminin de Championne du Monde Universitaire de Squash. Sachez enfin que la Britannique Lauren Sidall remporta son match pour la troisième place face à la Canadienne Katie Patrick tandis que, chez les hommes, son compatriote Joel Hinds gagna lui aussi sa rencontre face au joueur américain Julian Illingworth. 10 World University Championships Wildwater canoeing WILD WATER CANOE 2006 Cracow Poland 5th World University Championship 1 2 The Polish University Sports Association, AZS is very dynamic in FISU, and once again it has demonstrated this by taking charge of the organization of three World University Championships. After handball in Gdansk and futsal in Poznan, came wild water canoeing that met again in Kraków. Actually, the previous edition in 2002 had already stopped over in this magnificent Polish city. This time, our hosts went out of their way to This magnificent edition was dominated by the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with the local team, Poland, hot on their heels make everything perfect, and to ensure total success of the competition, they inaugurated a splendid basin offering excellent courses, as all contestants agreed. With a sharp rise in participation as compared to previous editions, this championship was an opportunity for some real confrontation between participants, and gave countries that are traditionally less skilled in this sport a chance to tackle the very best. Many of the athletes who Top Notch came to Kraków were among the world s greatest in this discipline. The truth is that they regularly meet each other on the international circuit. This year,14 countries presented 94 contestants, slightly fewer than the last edition but once again at an exceptional level. Despite the absence of the French, missed by everyone, all the strong canoeing nations were represented. The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Great Britain and Poland all returned home with gold. The Mayor of Kraków himself officially opened these championships. On the occasion, Mr. Jacek Majchrowski stressed his city s enthusiasm for University competition. The Opening Ceremony was held in the Olympic Centre, graced by the performance of young dancers who put on a beautiful folk dance show for the entire assembly. The very first day of the competition got down to the real nitty-gritty. In category K1 (Kayak) descent, the four-time world champion in the discipline, Czech Michala Mruzkova flew down the course with a six second lead over Slovakian Jana Dukatova and nine seconds in front of another Czech: Lenka Lagnerova. For that matter, the six first places went to Czech or Slovakian athletes! For the men, in the same category, British Jonathan Schofield took the day, recording the best time in both laps, and leaving no chance at all to the Czechs Tomas Slovak and David Knebel, respectively silver and bronze medal winners. On the second day, qualifying races were run for the slalom finals. Once again, the Czechs, Slovaks and Polish showed their stuff, but other nations would still have a chance to shine at the finals. On the third and last day came the slaloms finals. Ladies first the day began with the women s K1 finals. Après le handball à Gdansk, le futsal à Poznan ce fut au tour du canoë en eau vive de se retrouver une nouvelle fois à Cracovie. En effet, l édition précédente qui se déroulait en 2002 avait déjà fait escale dans cette magnifique cité polonaise. À cette occasion, nos hôtes avaient mis les petits plats dans les grands puisque, pour assurer le succès de la compétition, ils inaugurèrent un magnifique bassin qui, au dire des compétiteurs eux-mêmes, proposait d excellents parcours. Avec une participation en forte hausse par rapport aux éditions précédentes, ce championnat offrit une confrontation réelle aux participants et permit à des pays traditionnellement moins forts de se mesurer aux meilleurs de cette discipline. De nombreux athlètes présents à Cracovie comptaient d ailleurs parmi les meilleurs mondiaux de la discipline. Ils se retrouvent d ailleurs régulièrement sur le circuit international. Cette année, avec 14 pays présents, pour 94 compétiteurs, la participation fut en légère baisse mais le niveau, encore une fois, exceptionnel. En effet, malgré l absence remarquée des Français, toutes les nations fortes étaient représentées. La République Tchèque, la Slovaquie, la Grande-Bretagne et la Pologne se partagèrent les médailles d or. C est le Maire de Cracovie, lui même, qui ouvrit officiellement ce championnat. Mr. Jacek Majchrowski a tenu à souligner à cette occasion l attachement de sa ville à ces compétitions universitaires. La Cérémonie d Ouverture qui se tenait dans le centre olympique fut ponctuée par la performance de jeunes danseurs offrant à l assemblée un magnifique spectacle de danses folkloriques. Les choses sérieuses allaient commencer dès le premier jour de compétition. En effet, la catégorie K1 (Kayak) descente vit la domination, chez les femmes, de la quadruple Championne du Monde de la discipline, la Tchèque Michala Mruzkova. Celle-ci termina avec 6 secondes d avance sur la Slovaque Jana Dukatova et 9 secondes sur une autre Tchèque: Lenka Lagnerova. Il faut remarquer que les six premières places Ce fut une superbe édition dominée par la République Tchèque et la Slovaquie, suivies de près par l équipe locale, la Pologne revinrent à des athlètes tchèques ou slovaques! Chez les hommes, dans cette même catégorie, c est le Britannique Jonathan Schofield qui s illustra. Auteur des meilleurs temps dans les deux manches, il ne laissa aucune chance aux Tchèques Tomas Slovak et David Knebel, respectivement médaillés d argent et de bronze. La deuxième journée de compétition fut consacrée aux qualifications pour les finales des slaloms. Ici encore, les Tchèques, les Slovaques et les Polonais firent l étalage de tout leur talent, d autres nations restant toutefois bien placées pour briller en finale. Le troisième et dernier jour fut donc consacré aux finales des slaloms.

Czech Marie Rihoskova came in second in front of Gabriela Stacherova, another Slovakian, who won the bronze medal. For the men s K1 final, the surprise for the day was the elimination of the favourite, Polish Popiela. He started in at the head of the qualifying races, but made several faults in the semi-finals and so did not go on to the final. The excellent Czech slalom specialist Ivan Pisvejc finished first, followed by Swiss Michael Kurt and Italian Daniele Molmenti. Another great canoeing favourite (C1), Slovakian Alexander Slavkovsky also botched things in the finals and was not able to repeat the total ascendancy he showed in the qualifying rounds the previous day. So British David Florence convinced everyone with a fast, clear-cut race. Alexander Slavkovsky came in second and Polish Grzegorz Wojs took third. The Poles would be rewarded for their efforts with the two-paddle title (C2). The Sarna/Pochwala team was simply unbeatable in this event. Fast and smooth that is the only way to describe their performance. The Slovakian team Skantar/Skantar and the Czech team Hradilek/Sehnal were simply left behind. So closed this wonderful edition dominated by the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with the home team, Poland, coming up at the rear. Great Britain, Swiss and Italy also clocked in some very handsome results. Jana Dukatova y prit sa revanche sur la descente en s imposant magistralement. Elle ne commit aucune faute et réalisa un temps excellent. C est assurément la meilleure du monde dans cette catégorie. La Tchèque Marie Rihoskova termina à la deuxième place tandis que Gabriela Stacherova, une autre Slovaque, remporta le bronze. En finale du K1 masculin, la surprise du jour provint de l élimination du favori de l épreuve, le Polonais Popiela. Pourtant leader des qualifications, Popiela commit plusieurs fautes lors de la demi-finale et ne put accéder à la finale. Celle-ci fut remportée par l excellent slalomeur tchèque Ivan Pisvejc devant le Suisse Michael Kurt et l Italien Daniele Molmenti. Le grand favori du canoë (C1), le Slovaque Alexander Slavkovsky trébucha lui aussi lors de la finale et ne put rééditer son écrasante domination de la veille lors des qualifications. C est le Britannique David Florence qui mit tout le monde d accord en effectuant un parcours rapide et limpide. Alexander Slavkovsky se classa deuxième et le Polonais Grzegorz Wojs termina à la troisième place. Les Polonais allaient être récompensés de leurs efforts en accédant au titre du canoë double (C2). La paire Sarna/Pochwala fut proprement imbattable en finale de cette épreuve. Rapidité et fluidité furent leurs qualités premières. Ils laissèrent derrière eux la paire slovaque Skantar/Skantar et la paire tchèque Hradilek/Sehnal. Ainsi se termina cette superbe édition dominée par la République Tchèque et la Slovaquie, suivies de près par l équipe locale, la Pologne. Remarquons aussi les beaux résultats de la Grande-Bretagne, de la Suisse et de l Italie. World University Championships Matchracing MATCH RACING SAILING 2006 Palma de Mallorca Spain 3rd World University Championship 1 2 Matchracing is a very technical team sport that is run like a miniature America Cup. Consequently, two boats are face-to-face on a course that they sail twice. The subtleties in the regulations make this a very spectacular discipline, and suspense is always at hand for the races. Sailing races must contend with one aspect that no one controls, the wind. In Palma, it was so fickle, it had participants nerves on edge The first championship dates back to 2002 in Quiberon Bay (FRA). The conditions were tough, for a championship that kept every promise. The team from Great Britain became world champion without losing a single lap in the finals against Russia. The second World University Match Racing Championship was organized by the Bologna branch of the Italian University Sports Association, and took place in Rimini, Italy. This time, the Swedish took the day in a race that was uncertain to the very end. So this year it was Palma s turn to put together the third edition of the championship, sailed in Beneteau 25 boats. As you know, Palma has a long tradition when it comes to organizing sailing races. You may remember the Universiade in 1999, when sailing was one of the very popular optional sports. This year, the organizers enrolled participation of 12 teams from nine countries (FRA, JPN, AUS, ESP, GER, SWE, USA, GBR, ITA). The first part of the competition was raced using the round-robin principle, which means that each of the teams has to compete with all the others. Then the six best met for a second round-robin. Finally the four leading teams in the second round competed in the semi-finals and on to the finals. Note that the six losing teams in the first round-robin had to race a second round to finalize their ranks. Now of course, sailing races are always subject to an outside force that no one controls: the wind. And it played havoc which meant that we had to diverge somewhat from the ideal set-up. Everything started out well for the participants who were welcomed by a bright sun and a warm wind that was strong enough to test the conditions and the boats in the beautiful Palma de Mallorca Bay. The Opening Ceremony was held in the gorgeous Belver castle overlooking the sea, and the city added further charm to the day. The sports infrastructures made available to the participants were another aspect that corresponded to the enthusiastic spirit. Palma s Real club Nautique is simply a magic place with every facility for an enchanting stay as visitor or sailor. The club, in the heart of the Palma marina, PARTICIPATION H/M F/W OFF TOT 1 AUS ESP FRA GBR GER ITA JPN SWE USA total Sport d équipe, très technique, le Matchracing se veut une réplique en miniature de la Coupe de l América. On retrouve donc deux bateaux face à face sur un parcours effectué à deux reprises. Les finesses du règlement en font une discipline très spectaculaire et dont les épreuves sont émaillées de nombreux rebondissements. C est la baie de Quiberon (FRA) qui fut le théâtre du premier de ces championnats en Disputée dans des conditions musclées, cette première tint toutes ses promesses. L équipe venue de Grande- Bretagne fut sacrée championne du monde sans avoir perdu la moindre manche lors de la finale disputée face aux Russes. Le deuxième Championnat du Monde Universitaire de Match Racing fut pris en charge par l antenne du CUSI située à Bologne et eut lieu en Italie à Rimini. Là, ce sont les Suédois qui s imposèrent au terme d une compétition indécise jusqu à son terme. Ce fut donc au tour de Palma de mettre sur pied la troisième édition de ce championnat qui fut disputée sur des bateaux de type Beneteau 25. Comme vous le savez, Palma possède une très longue tradition en matière d organisation de compétitions de voile. Souvenez-vous de l Universiade de 1999, la voile faisait partie des sports optionnels et fit le plein de participants. Cette année, les organisateurs enregistrèrent la participation de douze équipes provenant de neufs pays (FRA, JPN, AUS, ESP, GER, SWE, USA, GBR, ITA). La première partie de la compétition s effectua selon le principe du round-robin. Cela veut dire que chacune des équipes eut à concourir contre toutes les autres. Les six meilleures devaient être réunies pour un deuxième round-robin. Enfin les quatre premiers de ce deuxième tour allaient se retrouver en demi-finale et puis en finale. Notez que les six équipes perdantes du premier round-robin devaient s affronter dans une seconde manche pour décider de leur classement final. Comme vous le savez, les compétitions de voiles sont tributaires d une donnée extérieure qui n est pas maîtrisable: le vent. Celui-ci allait nous jouer des tours et modifier quelque peu ce schéma idéal. Tout avait pourtant bien commencé pour les participants qui furent accueillis par un franc soleil et un vent thermique suffisant pour tester les conditions et les bateaux dans la magnifique baie de Palma de Majorque, la perle des Iles Baléares. La Cérémonie d Ouverture célébrée dans le superbe Château de Belver qui surplombe la mer et la ville ajouta encore au charme de cette journée. Il faut souligner que les infrastructures sportives mises à la disposition des participants n étaient pas non plus étrangères à Les compétitions de voiles sont tributaires d une donnée extérieure qui n est pas maîtrisable: le vent. À Palma, il fut capricieux en diable jouant avec les nerfs des concurrents cet état d esprit. Le Real Club Nautique de Palma est tout simplement un endroit magique regroupant toutes les facilités propres à rendre le séjour du visiteur comme du régatier des plus agréables.

The First Round-Robin It took 2 1/2 days of racing to complete the first round-robin and get the names of the six best skippers. Despite the very light wind blowing these two days, Spanish Manuel Weiler from Mallorca (who prefers rougher conditions) logically made the day in his own backyard, so to speak. For the Spanish Champion in the category (Beneteau 25), it was almost normal to come in at the head of the list and as the local favourite. Three skippers followed, all with the same score: the other Spaniard Jose Ponce, French Pierre Morvan and British Jonathan Pinner. In fifth position was Australian Mark Dorling with American John Loe closing the ranks. The Second Round-Robin So there were two days left to validate the first round-robin and the final phase. And that s when the wind decided to be difficult, as it became increasingly fickle. The racing committee had to reconcile itself to eliminating the second round to finalize the ranking of the teams that weren t among the top six. So the positions were frozen from 7th to 12th place. Then the organizers played a game of hide-and-seek with the wind. They managed to validate enough matches to close the second round-robin and designate the four top skippers: Ponce (ESP1), Weiller (ESP2), Dorling (AUS) and Morvan (FRA). The Final Phase The first semi-final unexpectedly put Australian Mark Dorling over the favourite José Ponce. Mark and his team managed to brilliantly cope with these particularly stressful conditions. In the other semi-final, across from the excellent French skipper Pierre Morvan, Manuel Weiller pulled through on his home ground by two laps to zero as the wind had fits of asthma. So he rose to the finals to defend the Spanish colours. It took only two matches to decide the winner of the final Mark Dorling there was no doubt about it. The Australian was faster and his tactics were more effective. So he and his team were dubbed the World University Match Racing Champions. Thanks to his victory during the B final, Pierre Morvan took the third step on the podium. Premier Round-Robin Il fallut deux jours et demi de compétition pour en terminer avec le premier round-robin et pour connaître les six meilleurs skippers. Malgré le vent très léger qui régna durant ces journées, l Espagnol et Majorquin Manuel Weiler (qui préfère les conditions plus dures) s imposa logiquement dans son jardin pourrait-on dire. Pour le Champion d Espagne dans cette catégorie (Beneteau 25), il était presque normal de se positionner en tête du classement et des pronostics. Trois skippers le suivaient ex-aequo: l autre Espagnol Jose Ponce, le Français Pierre Morvan et le Britannique Johnatan Pinner. En cinquième position on retrouva l Australien Marc Dorling suivi par l Américain John Loe. Deuxième Round Robin Il restait donc deux autres journées pour valider le deuxième round-robin et la phase finale. C est à ce moment que les choses se gâtèrent puisque le vent décida de se montrer des plus capricieux. Le comité de course dut se résoudre à ne pas effectuer le second tour prévu pour départager les équipes qui n étaient pas dans le top six lors du premier round robin. Les positions furent dès lors figées en ce qui concerne le classement de la 7e à la 12e place. Le vent joua ensuite à cache-cache avec les organisateurs. Ceux-ci purent néanmoins valider assez de matches et clore le deuxième round-robin. On connaissait donc les quatre meilleurs skippers: Ponce (ESP1), Weiller (ESP2), Dorling (AUS) et Morvan (FRA). Phase finale La première demi-finale vit la victoire du surprenant skipper australien Mark Dorling face à José Ponce. Mark et son équipe parvinrent à gérer brillamment ces conditions particulières et stressantes. Opposé au fameux français Pierre Morvan dans la deuxième demi-finale, Manuel Weiller, le régional de l étape, s imposa par deux matchs à zéro (dans des conditions de vent asthmatique) pour accéder en finale et porter tous les espoirs de l Espagne. Seulement deux courses furent nécessaires pour connaître le vainqueur de cette finale et ce fut Mark Dorling sans aucun doute possible. L Australien était plus rapide et plus fin tacticien. Lui et son équipe furent donc sacrés Champions du Monde Universitaires de Matchracing. Grâce à sa victoire dans la finale B Pierre Morvan accéda à la troisième marche du Podium. Ainsi se termina cette compétition que l on aurait aimée plus ventée tout de même... 25

14 26 Chinese Taipei and Thailand at the Lead World University Championships Woodball WOODBALL 2006 Bangkok Thaïlande 2ème Championnat du Monde Universitaire 27 Taipei City (TPE) had the pleasure of hosting the first World University Woodball Championship. And that of course makes sense, since this is one of the places where the game originated, and it has become very popular here. Chinese Taipei dominated the competition, pocketing seven medals, three of them in gold. This year, the city of Bangkok took charge of organizing the second edition. The competition was played in three days at the North Park golf club and was hosted by Sripatum University where the official ceremonies took place. There is no doubt that for the Thai University Sports Board this was another stage in the rush to the Universiade No one was able to challenge the supremacy of China Taipei and Thailand in this competition next summer. From the outset, the President of the University Sports Board of Thaïland (USBT), Dr. Pornchai Matangkasmbat reassured all participants on safety. The championship took place just a few days after the coup d état that upset the Thai government, but the events had no incidence on the smooth operation of the competition. Woodball has many assets to please large numbers: it is easy to learn, but hard to master, it can be played for competition or simply for fun. Any lawn can be used as a field and finally, the equipment required is really not expensive. These are no doubt why it is so popular in countries in South Asia where it first developed. Players use a wooden mallet to hit a wooden ball weighing 400 g, with a diameter of 9.5 cm. The ball must finish its course by rolling through a gate consisting of two wooden pins 16 cm apart. All the skill lies in using as few strokes as possible to reach 1 the gate; in fact each itinerary is characterized by a par (like in golf) which is the ideal number of strokes to get through the gate. The course consists of three separate parts: the tee off, the fairway and the green where the gate stands. 11 countries were enrolled by the organizers with a total of 118 participants (36 more than in the previous edition). After a very colourful Opening Ceremony, PARTICIPATION H/M F/W OFF TOT 1 BUL CHN HKG IND JPN KOR RUS SIN THA TPE UGA total as always in Thailand, the weather was touch-and-go for the competition itself. After the first day, two countries pulled ahead quite logically. In fact, no one seemed to be able to challenge the players from Thailand and Chinese Taipei. After the first round (24 gates), Thai Weerasak Imjarouen took the head of the men s tournament. Rain was a nuisance for the women s tournament, and the first round was not entirely validated, so the ranking was not announced until the next day. At the end of the day, after two rounds for the ladies, Chinese Taipei had both first and second: Siao-Hui Wu was in first place and Hui-Jung Wang just behind her. There was a tough fight for the silver and bronze medals. Suthida Chawianghong from Thailand and Pei-Ju Ssu from Chinese Taipei were just one point behind and could still hope to win second place if Hui- Jung Wang made an error. For the men, the second day saw a few changes in leadership. Pei-Yu ku, from C est Taipei City (TPE) qui eut le plaisir d accueillir le Premier Championnat du Monde Universitaire de Woodball. Quoi de plus normal, puisque c est un des berceaux de ce sport qui commence à prendre un réel essor. La Chine Taipeh avait d ailleurs dominé la compétition empochant 7 médailles dont 3 d or. Cette année, c est la ville de Bangkok qui prit en charge l organisation de la seconde édition. La compétition se déroula sur trois jours au club de golf du North Park et bénéficia de l accueil de l Université de Sripatum où se déroulèrent les cérémonies officielles. Ce fut assurément pour la Fédération Thaïlandaise du Sport Universitaire une étape de plus dans la course vers la tenue de l Universiade, l été prochain. Dès le départ, le Président de la Fédération Sportive Universitaire de Thaïlande (USBT), le Dr. Pornchai Matangkasombat, a tenu à rassurer les participants sur leurs conditions de sécurité. Le championnat se déroula, en effet, seulement quelques jours après le coup d état qui fit basculer le gouvernement thaïlandais. Ces événements n eurent donc aucune incidence sur le bon déroulement de la compétition. Le Woodball possède de nombreux atouts pour plaire au plus grand nombre: il est facile à apprendre mais difficile à maîtriser, il peut se jouer aussi bien dans un esprit de compétition que de récréation. On le pratique sur n importe quel espace en gazon. Enfin, l équipement nécessaire est vraiment bon marché. C est sans doute pour ces raisons qu il est si populaire dans les pays d Asie du Sud qui l on vu naître. Le joueur utilise un maillet en bois avec lequel il frappe une balle en bois de 400 grammes et de 9,5 cm de diamètre. Celle-ci devra terminer sa course au travers d une porte constituée de deux bouteilles de bois disposées à 16 cm l une de l autre. Tout l art consistera à utiliser le moins de coups possible pour rejoindre la porte; chaque parcours étant d ailleurs caractérisé (comme au golf) par son par qui est en fait le nombre de coups idéal pour effectuer le parcours. Ce dernier sera composé de trois parties distinctes: l aire de départ (Tee-off), le Fairway et enfin le Green où la porte sera placée. 2 Onze nations furent enregistrées par les organisateurs pour un total de 118 participants (soit 36 de plus que lors de l édition précédente). Après une Cérémonie d Ouverture haute en couleur, comme toujours en Thaïlande, la compétition débuta dans des conditions météo incertaines. À l issue du premier jour, deux nations se détachèrent assez logiquement. En effet, nul ne sembla en mesure d inquiéter les joueurs et joueuses provenant de Thaïlande et de Chine Taipeh. Après ce premier tour (soit 24 portes), c est Personne ne fut donc en mesure de contester la suprématie de la Chine Taipeh et de la Thaïlande dans cette compétition donc le Thaïlandais Weerasak Imjarouen qui prit la tête du classement masculin. La pluie joua les trouble fête dans l épreuve féminine si bien que le premier tour ne put être complètement validé. Il fallut donc attendre le lendemain pour voir la hiérarchie se dessiner. Deux tours joués chez les dames, à l issue de cette journée et un doublé de la Chine Taipeh: Siao-Hui Wu à la première place et Hui-Jung Wang en deuxième position. La bataille pour les médailles d argent et de bronze s annonçait très rude. En effet, la Thaïlandaise Suthida Chawianghong et Pei-Ju Ssu de la Chine Taipeh séparées par un point d écart pouvaient toujours prétendre atteindre la deuxième place en cas de faux pas de Hui- Jung Wang. La deuxième journée chez les hommes vit

So the third round was decisive in both individual categories. The eight best men and women would vie for the title. For the men, Weerasak Imjarouen, who is also a very good golfer (he will be taking part in the Universiade tournament in 2007), took the day after a glorious third round. He won the gold without any possible doubt in front of Pei-Yu Ku (TPE). For the bronze, another Thai, Jongkol Pimparieu would join the podium. The team event for men also went to Thailand ahead of Chinese Taipei and Korea. The ladies played a spectacular third round as Hui-Jung Wang recovered her advantage when no one suspected she could. Siao-Hui Wu had been comfortably ahead, but did not do well on the last day and had to be content with the silver medal (for a differential of a single point!). The bronze medal slipped away from Thai Suthida Chawianghong (who finally came in sixth) in favour of Pei-Ju Ssu. Still all three places went to the women from Chinese Taipei. This was more than just a triple victory, since actually they took the top five. And the team competition as well, of course, followed by Thailand and Korea. No one was able to challenge the supremacy of Chinese Taipei and Thailand as they also won the mixed doubles events. Gold and silver went to Chinese Taipei with Kuo-Liang Lee/Tzu-Chi and Po-Hsuan Yang/Hui-Jung Wang, and the bronze to the local couple Nirun Navin/Saimai Auefue. Chez les hommes, c est Weerasak Imjarouen, qui est aussi un très bon joueur de golf (il participera d ailleurs au tournoi de l Universiade 2007), qui s imposa grâce à un somptueux troisième tour. Il remporta l or sans contestation possible devant Pei-Yu Ku (TPE). Enfin, un autre Thaïlandais, Jongkol Pimparieu allait le rejoindre sur la troisième marche du podium. La Thaïlande remporta également le classement masculin par équipes devant la Chine Taipeh et la Corée. Chez les dames et grâce également à un troisième tour époustouflant, Hui-Jung Wang reprit l avantage alors qu on ne l attendait pas. Siao-Hui Wu qui menait pourtant avec une bonne avance ne réalisa pas un bon score lors de cette dernière journée et dût se contenter de la médaille d argent (pour seulement un point d écart!). La médaille de bronze échappa à la Thaïlandaise Suthida Chawianghong (seulement 6e) au profit de Pei-Ju Ssu. C est un triplé magnifique pour ces joueuses de la Chine Taipeh. Ce fut plus qu un triplé d ailleurs puisque le top 5 revint à la Chine Taipeh. Celle-ci empocha également l or au classement par équipes devant la Thaïlande et la Corée. Personne ne fut donc en mesure de contester la suprématie de la Chine Taipeh et de la Thaïlande qui remportèrent également la compétition en double mixte. L or et l argent revinrent à la première citée grâce aux paires Kuo-Liang Lee/Tzu-Chi et Po-Hsuan Yang/Hui-Jung Wang tandis que le bronze s en fut dans les poches de la paire locale Nirun Navin/Saimai Auefue. 29

16 The First Time in World University Championships Boxe Kazakhstan 31 The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) very much wanted to promote its sport at university level and insisted on the organization of the first World University Boxing Championships despite a very late application. And it was certainly right, the first championship, that took place in Antalya in 2004, was a great success. This was due to the very solid file that the Turks presented at the time and their dynamic policy for promoting the games. 129 boxers from 27 countries met on the west coast of Turkey for this inaugural tournament. For a first edition, figures for participation were quite remarkable, giving an indication of the promising future of BOXING 2006 Almaty Kazakhstan 2nd World University Championship the discipline at FISU. Subsequently, many countries applied to organize the next championship games. So, initial cooperation between FISU and AIBA began auspiciously. All through the championship, officials from FISU and AIBA had an opportunity to meet on several occasions. These discussions gave the FISU representatives a better understanding of boxing and its particular rules. Secretary General of AIBA, Mr. Caner Doganelli in fact gave a presentation on the many changes that have taken place in this sport over the last 20 years. They all have the same objective: improving the safety of boxers both in practice sessions and during the matches themselves. Attracting contestants at this high level is exceptional for a sport that has been on the programme only twice Désireuse de promouvoir ce sport au niveau universitaire l Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur (AIBA) avait fortement insisté pour que le Premier Championnat du Monde Universitaire de cette discipline puisse avoir lieu malgré une demande d attribution très tardive. Avec raison, d ailleurs, puisque cette première qui eut lieu à Antalya en 2004 fut couronnée de succès. Cela, on le dut à la solidité du dossier présenté par les Turcs à l époque et à leur politique active de promotion de cette compétition. 129 boxeurs provenant de 27 pays se retrouvèrent sur la côte ouest de la Turquie pour ce tournoi inaugural. Pour une première, ce 1 chiffre de participation était assez remarquable et laissait augurer un avenir prometteur à cette discipline au sein de la FISU. De nombreux pays s étaient alors portés candidats à l organisation des éditions suivantes. La collaboration naissante entre la FISU et l AIBA s était, en outre, nouée sous les meilleurs auspices. Durant tout ce championnat les responsables de la FISU et ceux de l AIBA eurent d ailleurs l occasion de se réunir à plusieurs reprises. Ces discussions permirent aux dirigeants de la FISU de mieux appréhender la boxe et ses règles particulières. Le Secrétaire Général de l AIBA, M. Caner Doganelli donna d ailleurs un exposé sur les changements nombreux opérés dans ce sport ces 20 dernières années. Ceux-ci ont tous eu un seul et même objectif: l amélioration de la sécurité des boxeurs que ce soit lors des entraînements ou lors des matchs proprement dits. C est la ville d Almaty, au Kazakhstan qui fut proposée pour l organisation de ce tournoi. C était une première pour l Association Sportive Universitaire de ce pays qui est membre de la FISU depuis L absence d expérience dans l organisation de Championnats du Monde Universitaires n empêcha pas nos hôtes du Kazakhstan de recevoir les participants dans d excellentes conditions. Les boxeurs purent également s appuyer sur la très professionnelle organisation technique Il est rare qu un sport, présent seulement pour la deuxième fois dans notre programme, puisse aligner des compétiteurs de cette qualité supervisée conjointement par l AIBA, la fédération de boxe du Kazakhstan et la FISU. On l a dit plus haut, l attribution tardive de ce championnat eut des conséquences sur la participation qui fut, certes, honorable mais sans commune mesure avec celle de la première édition. En effet, 82 boxeurs issus de 14 pays furent enregistrés à Almaty. Il faut toutefois remarquer que, malgré cela, le niveau de la compétition fut très élevé. 17 32 The venue for the second World University Boxing Championships was again decided late, which did have an effect on participation. The city of Almaty, in Kazakhstan was chosen to organize the tournament. This was a first for the University Sports Association of the country which has been a member of FISU since Although they were novices in organizing World University Championships, this did not prevent our Kazakh hosts from welcoming the participants under very good conditions. The boxers had the advantage of very professional technical supervision provided jointly by the AIBA, the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation and FISU. As we mentioned earlier, the fact that the championship was attributed late did have consequences participation was honourable, but not comparable to the numbers in the first edition. In fact, 82 boxers from 14 countries enrolled for Almaty. Nevertheless, the level of competition was very high. Actually, attracting such high-quality contestants is rare for a sport that was part of our programme for the second time only. With a world champion, former junior champions, Asian, European and national champions, this was a University tournament at the very top, comparable to other major international boxing meets. The host country of Kazakhstan obtained the best results, taking six gold medals and one silver. With two gold medals and four silver, the Russians took second place., Lithuania and Uzbekistan also recorded noteworthy results. Finally, as compared to the first edition, 5 new countries were present: Japan, Lithuania, Moldavia, Mongolia and Serbia. Collaboration with the AIBA was further reinforced during this championship as on this occasion Mr. Caner Doganelli and Mr. Sinisa Jasnic, FISU Assessor and President of the Technical Committee for our World University Championships signed an agreement binding the two associations. Several international sports federations have already signed similar contracts with FISU. This is quite a breakthrough we will get better recognition within these various associations, and on the other hand, FISU will contribute to promoting their sports at university level. Finally, our hosts from the Kazakhstan University Sports Association wanted to thank our Secretary General Mr. Roch Campana, for his support and for being present in Almaty during the championship. After a meeting with the leaders of the Kazakh Olympic Committee, Mr. Campana was invited to the Academy of Sports and Tourism. Rehaussé par la présence d un champion du monde, d anciens champions du monde junior, de champions d Asie, d Europe ou nationaux, ce tournoi universitaire fut donc de très haute volée et comparable aux autres grandes rencontres internationales de boxe. C est le Kazakhstan qui obtint les meilleurs résultats remportant 6 médailles d or et une d argent. Avec 2 médailles d or et 4 d argent, les Russes se classèrent au second rang. Notez encore, dans une moindre mesure les très bons résultats de la Mongolie, la Lituanie et de l Ouzbékistan. Sachez enfin, que par rapport à la première édition, on nota la participation de 5 nouveaux pays : le Japon, la Lituanie, la Moldavie, la Mongolie et la Serbie. La collaboration avec l AIBA s est encore renforcée lors de ce championnat puisque à cette occasion, M. Caner Doganelli a signé avec M. Sinisa Jasnic, Assesseur à la FISU et Président de la Commission technique de nos Championnats du Monde, une convention liant nos deux associations. Plusieurs fédérations sportives internationales ont déjà signé avec la FISU un même type de contrat. Ceci est très remarquable et nous assurera une meilleure reconnaissance au sein même de ces instances, tandis que de son côté la FISU oeuvrera à la promotion de ces sports au niveau universitaire. Enfin, sachez que nos hôtes de l association sportive universitaire du Kazakhstan ont tenu à remercier notre Secrétaire Général, M. Roch Campana, pour le soutien qu il leur a apporté et pour sa présence à Almaty lors de ce championnat. Après une rencontre avec les dirigeants du Comité Olympique Kazakh, M. Campana fut accueilli à l Académie du Sport et du Tourisme. M. Kairat Zakiryanov, le Recteur et Président de la FNSU lui décerna le titre de professeur honoraire, une distinction que M. 18 World University Championships Badminton 35 BADMINTON 2006 Wuhan China (People s Rep.) 9th World University Championship Who can Stand Up to Asia? In the opinion of Roger Johansson, FISU technical delegate for badminton, student players are getting better and better. In any case, a growing number of men and women take part in other highlevel international events. At the last edition of the championships in Thailand, the great badminton countries were all there: Korea, Japan, China, Chinese Taipei and of course Thailand itself. Generally Overcoming the Chinese, playing at home this time, is not just difficult, it s downright impossible speaking, badminton is a sport that is still very popular with the student community. It s a lot of fun, and needs very lightweight infrastructures, so it is a modern discipline that can easily be set up on campuses. Traditionally, Asian countries are particularly brilliant at the World University Badminton Championships. Since the first edition in Cyprus in 1990, that s the way it has been. And was again in the 2004 edition held in Bangkok. The eighth WUC badminton was dominated head and shoulders by the teams from China, Chinese Taipei and Thailand. At the ninth World University Badminton Championship, overcoming the Chinese, who were playing at home this time, proved not just difficult, it was downright impossible... The championship was organized in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province. The fully renovated sports complex had 10 courts for the competition and six more for practice in the China University of Geosciences. In the opinion of Mr. Johansson this sports facility was one of the best ever proposed for a FISU badminton championship. 16 countries were represented in the tournament and for the first time, there was a team event as well. In fact, the competition started with that event. Four teams stood out above all the rest to vie with each other in the semi-finals: Russia and Germany on one hand, China and Chinese Taipei on the other. The semi-finals were long and indecisive. Finally Russia and China took the games for their regularity and their quality play, and faced each other in the final. Unfortunately, the final was less interesting, as the Chinese team, decidedly too good for the Russians, strode easily to victory. In any case, the first days of the competition showed the high level the athletes had reached, which was confirmed in the single and double events. Il est clair que de plus en plus de joueurs et joueuses participent à d autres compétitions internationales de haut rang. De manière générale, le badminton demeure un sport très bien suivi par la communauté estudiantine. Son aspect très ludique allié à la légèreté des infrastructures requises pour sa pratique en font une discipline très moderne et très facile à mettre en place au sein des campus. Traditionnellement, ce sont surtout les pays asiatiques qui brillent lors des Championnats du Monde Universitaires de Badminton. Depuis la première édition qui avait lieu à Chypre en 1990, c est toujours comme cela que ça se passe. Et ce fut encore le cas lors de l édition 2004 qui se tenait donc à Bangkok. Ce 8e CMU de badminton fut dominé de la tête et des épaules par les équipes, de Chine, de Chine Taipeh et de Thaïlande. Contrer les Chinois, qui jouèrent chez eux cette fois, pour ce 9e Championnat du Monde Universitaire de Badminton s avéra une tâche très difficile voire franchement impossible... Organisé à Wuhan, capitale de la province de Hubei, le championnat se déroula dans un superbe complexe sportif complètement rénové disposant de 10 courts pour la compétition et de 6 autres pour l entraînement et situé dans la China University of Geosciences. Une halle des sports qui selon l avis de M. Johansson fut l une des meilleurs jamais offertes pour un championnat de badminton à la FISU. Seize nations étaient représentées pour ce tournoi. Notez que pour la première fois, une épreuve par équipes fut mise sur pied. C est par cette dernière que la compétition commença. Quatre équipes sortirent du lot et se retrouvèrent en demi-finale. La Russie et l Allemagne d un côté et la Chine face à la Chine Taipeh de l autre. Ces deux demi-finales furent longues et indécises. La Russie et la Chine imposèrent leur régularité et leur qualité de jeu pour se retrouver face à face. La finale fut malheureusement plus terne et se résuma à un cavalier seul de l équipe chinoise décidemment trop forte pour les Russes. Ces premiers jours de compétition démontrèrent, en tout cas, à quel point le niveau atteint par les joueurs était élevé. Cela se confirma dans les rencontres individuelles et les doubles. Comme s était attendu, la Chine et la Chine Taipeh furent très ambitieuses lors de ce championnat, jugez plutôt: la Chine aligna 4 joueurs et 5 joueuses dans les demi-finales; tandis que la Chine Taipeh se retrouva dans cette phase avec 7 joueurs et 5 joueuses! Le reste des compétiteurs provenait de France, de Contrer les Chinois, qui jouèrent chez eux, cette fois, s avéra une tâche très difficile voire franchement impossible... Russie, de Grande-Bretagne et du Japon. Seule cette dernière nation parvint jusqu en finale (du double dame) pour tenir tête aux Chinois. Le simple masculin fut 100% chinois. Gong Wei-Jie y affrontait Kai Wen. Il fallut 3 sets et 50 minutes au premier pour s adjuger la médaille d or. Deuxième titre pour la Chine. Le simple dames vit s opposer Ming-Jie Pai de la Chine Taipeh à la Chinoise Yi-Han

The other contestants came from France, Russia, Great Britain and Japan. Only Japan reached a final (in the ladies doubles) to vie with the Chinese. The men s singles were 100% Chinese. Gong Wei-Jie faced Kai Wen. It took three sets and 50 minutes for the former to take the gold medal. A second title for China. The women s singles opposed Ming-Jie Pai from Chinese Taipei to Chinese Yi-Han Wang. Three sets in a very close match and Yi-Han took the day. A third title for China! The men s doubles could only go to Chinese Taipei. After all, both of the finalist teams came from the same country. Hats off to Huang/Chen who overcame Chien/Lin in three tight sets in 48 minutes. A word of homage here to the Japanese team Wakita/Muramatsu that rivalled a formidable Chinese couple Pan/Feng in the women s doubles. This one-way match gave Pan Pan and Chen Feng the gold without a struggle in two sets (25 minutes playing time). And a fourth title for China... Finally, in the mixed doubles, again the battle was between compatriots as two Chinese teams rose to the finals. Han-Bin He and Chen Feng got the better of Li-Hua Zhu and Lin Chen in two quick sets. Fifth and last title for China! Badminton will be among the optional sports at the Bangkok Universiade in We are expecting a considerable increase in participation, as is often the case when a sport is included in the Universiade programme. Once again, the Asian countries will be present on all fronts, but who knows, perhaps one of the other countries may manage to shine. Trois sets d un match très serré furent nécessaires à Yi-Han pour s imposer. Troisième titre pour la Chine! Le double masculin ne pouvait que revenir à la Chine Taipeh. En effet, les deux paires finalistes provenaient de ce pays. Un grand coup de chapeau donc à la paire Huang/Chen qui battit la paire Chien/Lin et trois sets accrochés et 48 minutes. Il faut ici rendre hommage à la paire japonaise Wakita/Muramatsu qui dut affronter, dans le double dames, la redoutable paire chinoise Pan/Feng. Le match fut à sens unique permettant à Pan Pan et Chen Feng de remporter l or assez facilement en deux sets (25 minutes de jeu). Quatrième titre pour la Chine... Enfin dernier duel fratricide dans le double mixte puisque une fois encore deux paires chinoises se retrouvèrent en finale. Han-Bin He et Chen Feng vinrent à bout en deux sets rapides de leurs compatriotes Li-Hua Zhu et Lin Chen. Cinquième et dernier titre pour la Chine! Le badminton fera partie des sports optionnels lors de l Universiade de Bangkok On s attend à une participation en forte hausse, comme c est souvent le cas lorsqu un sport se trouve repris au programme de l Universiade. Là encore, les pays asiatiques seront omniprésents, mais qui sait, peut-être que quelques autres nations arriveront à tirer leur épingle du jeu. Sinon, prenez déjà rendez-vous pour le prochain Championnat du Monde Universitaire de Badminton qui se tiendra, en 2008, à Braga, au Portugal.

20 World University Championships Bridge The Enchantment of China 39 T he Chinese University Sports Association was very dynamic this year, taking charge of two championships. After badminton (see page 34), it also hosted the bridge tournament in the city of Tianjin. Bridge made its debuts in the FISU programme in the 1990s, when enthusiasts of the game contacted Paul Magerman (who was the President of the European Community Bridge League at the time) to set up a bridge Hats off to the organizers who offered us a very friendly tournament combining tradition and excellence tournament at University scale. From the start of the adventure, FISU offered its patronage, so that the first European Union Bridge Championship was quickly put in place. In 2000, this championship became worldwide when the first edition took place in Maastricht as part of the Bridge Olympiades. With recognition by FISU, the first World University Bridge Championship finally took place in Bruges in Then the city of Istanbul took charge of organizing the second edition. Tianjin City, located 120 km southeast of Beijing, had already sponsored the national University Bridge Championship in its own university (Tianjin Normal University). And this time, it hosted the international version of the competition. There is no denying that the Chinese organizers did everything they could to ensure the success of the event. As Geert Magerman, the technical delegate responsible for Bridge at FISU put it: When I met the people on the Organizing Committee for the first time, they showed me their sense of hospitality plus enormous motivation. Coming back today, I can see that my first impression was below the mark. We are enjoying a magnificent championship with an impressive cultural programme, flawless organization and, the cherry on the cake, a very exciting competition. To explain the popularity of bridge with students, we can also mention that the game is increasingly structured at university level in fact, a special Internet platform has been developed for it ( All of this was made possible thanks to the unwavering support of the World Bridge Federation (WBF). Its President, Mr. Jose Damiani attended the competition in Tianjin to show his great interest in University tournaments. FISU and WBF joined efforts as they signed a convention (as they have done with international federations for archery, wrestling, karate, boxing and floorball) so that they can envisage even closer collaboration. For this third World University Championship, 27 teams from 22 countries came to China. Participation has substantially increased as compared to the second edition, with 15 countries enrolled. All participants were given accommodations in Tianjin University in rooms that would suit a three-star hotel. The area reserved for the games was very close by, so participants could go on foot. The tournament got great coverage in the press and from several local radio and television stations. Après avoir gagné la reconnaissance de la FISU le premier Championnat du Monde Universitaire de Bridge put enfin avoir lieu à Bruges en Ce fut ensuite la ville d Istanbul qui prit en charge l organisation de la deuxième édition. Située à 120 km au Sud-Est de Pékin, Tianjin City avait déjà organisé un Championnat Universitaire National de Bridge au sein de son université (Tianjin Normal University). Cette fois, elle fut l hôte de la version internationale de cette compétition. Il faut avouer que les organisateurs chinois ont tout fait pour assurer le succès de cette manifestation, comme l a rappelé Geert Magerman, le délégué technique chargé du Bridge à la FISU: Lorsque j ai rencontré les responsables du Comité d Organisation pour la première fois, ils ne m ont pas seulement montré leur sens de l hospitalité, ils ont affiché une motivation énorme. De retour aujourd hui, je constate que mon impression était encore en dessous de la réalité. Nous participons à un championnat magnifique doté d un impressionnant programme culturel, d une organisation sans faille et, cerise sur le gâteau, d une compétition très excitante. Pour expliquer cet engouement, il faut souligner également le fait que le bridge se structure de plus en plus au niveau universitaire et a notamment développé une plateforme Internet spécifique ( Tout cela est rendu possible grâce au soutien indéfectible de la Fédération Mondiale de Bridge (WBF). Son Président, M. Jose Damiani était d ailleurs présent à Tianjin pour montrer tout l intérêt qu il porte à ces tournois universitaires. La FISU et la WBF ont d ailleurs unis leurs efforts en signant une convention (comme Il faut donner un grand coup de chapeau aux organisateurs pour nous avoir offert une compétition mêlant chaleur, tradition et excellence c est déjà le cas avec les fédérations internationales de tir à l arc, lutte, karaté, boxe et floorball) leur permettant d envisager une collaboration encore plus étroite. Pour ce troisième Championnat du Monde Universitaire, 27 équipes provenant de 22 pays se sont retrouvées en Chine. L augmentation de participation est substantielle par rapport à la deuxième édition où 15 pays furent enregistrés. Tous les participants furent logés à l Université de Tianjin dans des chambres dignes d un hôtel trois étoiles. L espace alloué aux parties se trouvant à très faible
