It s the anniversary of the day they announced to the world that the 13 colonies no longer belonged to Great Britain, and Democracy was born. The 13 colonies were: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia. In Europe, every day, people leave their country to come to the land of the free and the home of the brave. So, they can begin their American Dream. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams are two of the founders of the new nation. Independence day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8 th In 1941, Congress declared July 4 th a legal public holiday. In America, there are several symbols that represent our freedom. Our flag is the most important symbol: the first (1 st ) flag had the British Kings Colours and it was called the Grand Union flag. Soon, it was decided that red, white and blue will be American symbols with red and white stripes for the 13 states and 13 white stars. France gave the Statue of Liberty to America in 1884 as a symbol of friendship. It is in New York Harbour. The statue s name is: liberty enlightening the world The liberty bell represents America s freedom. It was made in London. The bell cracked the first time it was rung, it was repaired in 1846 and cracked again. The bell has not been rung since. 13 stripes and 13 stars in stripes but, 50 stars for the 50 states today Now, Americans celebrate freedom and independence with barbecues, picnics, family gatherings, shows, bonfires, sport games and illuminations.
