2 Core French cademic (FSF1D) COURSE DESCRIPION ND RIONLE his course emphasizes the further development of oral communication, reading, and writing skills. Students will build on and apply their knowledge of French while exploring a variety of themes, such as relationships, social trends, and careers. hematic readings, which include a selection of short stories, articles, and poems, will serve as stepping stones to oral and written activities. Prerequisite: Minimum of 600 hours of French instruction, or equivalent OVERLL CURRICULUM EXPECIONS COURSE OULINE Oral Communication: listen and respond to short, structured spoken texts; listen and respond to a variety of short, simple, non-structured media works; express ideas and opinions in short conversations and teacher-guided discussions; make oral presentations on a variety of topics; use appropriate language conventions during oral communication activities. Reading: read and demonstrate an understanding of a variety of simple texts; read a range of simple texts to gather information and to expand their knowledge of the French language; identify and understand language conventions used in their reading materials. Writing: express ideas and opinions in short written texts; create short written texts in structured and open-ended situations; identify and use appropriate language conventions in their written work. SSESSMEN ND EVLUION Evaluation and Reporting of Student chievement Student achievement is communicated formally to students and parents by means of the Provincial Report Card, Grades he report card provides a record of the student s achievement of the curriculum expectations in every course, at particular points in the school year or semester, in the form of a percentage grade. he percentage grade represents the quality of the student s overall achievement of the expectations for the course and reflects the corresponding level of achievement as described in the achievement chart for the discipline.

3 final grade is recorded for every course, and a credit is granted and recorded for every course in which the student s grade is 50% or higher. he final grade for each course in Grades 9 12 will be determined as follows: Seventy per cent of the grade will be based on evaluations conducted throughout the course. his portion of the grade should reflect the student s most consistent level of achievement throughout the course, although special consideration should be given to more recent evidence of achievement. 5 ECHING ND LERNING SREGIES he aim of the Core French program is to provide students with fundamental communication skills in French and an understanding of the nature of the language and its culture. Core French offers students the chance to develop a usable command of the French language that can be expanded through further study or through contact with French-speaking people. By the end of the four-year program, students will be able to participate in a straightforward conversation in French; will be able to read with the help of a dictionary books, magazines, and newspapers in French; and will be able to understand the general meaning of radio and television news and other programs. Each unit of study will contain components from the three strands of the curriculum: Oral Communication: Reading; and Writing. variety of teaching strategies will be employed: note taking question and answer brainstorming webbing looking for cognates contextualization listening for pronunciation relating to life experiences developing personal vocabulary list process writing using writing models. cooperative small-group learning role playing independent research personal reflection technology constructive or creative dialogue. CONSIDERIONS FOR PROGRM PLNNING he planning and administering of this course is based on the premise that all students can be successful language learners. he teacher will provide quality instruction that respects students strengths and address their learning needs, using assessment information to plan instruction. he teacher will recognize the needs of students with special needs and those who are English language learners to provide instruction that enables those students to be successful. Information and communictions technology will be used throughout the course where it is appropriate. he program will also include opportunities for students to apply their language skills to work-related situations, to explore educational and career options, and to become self-directed learners. he program will provide students with an opportunity for cooperative education and other forms of experiential learning so that they can apply the skills they have developed in the classroom to real-life activities in the community and in the world of business and public service.
