L intégralité du texte a été rédigée par le moine franciscain et mathématicien italien Luca Pacioli ( ), son ami de nombreuses années. L objectif de Pacioli et de de Vinci, en faisant publier ce traité, était de décrire le monde selon les termes de ses éléments géométriques communs, c est-à-dire la Divine proportion, également appelée Nombre d or. Même la mise en page, que l on peut juger aujourd hui curieuse, Pacioli et de Vinci l ont établie selon un tracé géométrique respectant scrupuleusement la divine proportion.
