3 Report from the Chair 2008 was a milestone year for the OAG, as the Gallery turned 20 and celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art. To highlight our 20 years as Ottawa s municipal art gallery, we planned a year-long program of exceptional exhibitions and programs, an anniversary publication on our collections, and special events, including the Gallery s Anniversary Celebration Get Smart for Art. The art auction XX in May signalled that the celebration was truly underway, attracting a record number of guests and featuring work by over 65 artists. Thanks to a superb volunteer committee and the generosity of local restaurants, caterers and businesses, the event raised over $60,000 for the Gallery s exhibitions and public programs. This was followed in June by the Gallery s 4th Partners in Art Golf Event, which welcomed back federal minister John Baird and provincial minister Jim Watson as Honorary Patrons. Participants spent an enjoyable day on the links at the Marshes Golf Club, followed by an excellent dinner. The event generated $55,000, with proceeds going to educational programs for young people. The celebration continued in September, as over 400 people attended our house party, which included DJs, art, food, hands-on activities and more. The occasion also marked the opening of our special anniversary exhibitions: Evidence: The Ottawa City Project and Le Salon: Celebrating 35 Years of the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art. Ken Lochhead: A Celebration of Colour opened simultaneously in Art Rental and Sales, highlighting this important Ottawa artist s love of colour. The anniversary celebration culminated in November with Get Smart for Art, an ambitious fundraising initiative. The event attracted numerous sponsorship and table partners, many participating for the first time. Described by the Ottawa Citizen as a magnum opus of a party, it attracted some 500 hundred guests, who mingled in the Great Hall of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, surrounded by works from the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art and the Gallery s Contemporary Art Collection. Emcees Julie Nesrallah and Don Newman were on hand to introduce guest speaker Daniel Pink, and many distinguished guests from politics, the judiciary, business and the arts attended. The $120,000 in funds generated was earmarked for the OAG s Development Fund, established for the purpose of supporting the Gallery s objectives of finding a new home and enhancing the Firestone Collection. This event also saw the launch of a special publication highlighting the history and vision of both the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art and the Contemporary Art Collection, a beautifully illustrated bilingual catalogue that attests to the Gallery s growing importance as a collecting institution. 4 Apart from working hard on fundraising, Board members continued to be very involved in advocating for a new home for the OAG. The Gallery worked with the distinguished Toronto architectural firm Kuwabara, Payne, McKenna, Blumberg Architects (KPMB) to develop a vision for a new Ottawa Art Gallery building, based on the recommended space requirements outlined in our 2004 Feasibility Study. Building Committee members also collaborated with the City and the Ottawa Arts Court Foundation on the potential redevelopment of the Arts Court site. We are grateful to the many partners who assisted the OAG so generously in These include, among many others, Shaw, Bell, Telesat, the Ottawa Citizen, TELUS, TD Canada Trust, and the Ontario Arts Foundation Education Fund, as well as individuals, including Lawson Hunter, Greg Kane, Nan Griffiths, Jean-Pierre Gaboury, Glen Bloom, and others too numerous to mention. We also pay tribute to our government partners for their essential collaboration: the City of Ottawa; the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council, for their annual funding of our operations and programs; and the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Canadian Heritage, for their substantial project assistance. Volunteers are essential to the success of the OAG, and we appreciate the dedication of Board members, Art Rental and Sales volunteers, individuals participating on Board committees and the OAG s special events committees, as well as our student volunteers. Completing their terms, several Board members will be leaving the OAG, and we are indebted to them for their generous gift of time and expertise. Jean-Pierre Gaboury completed the maximum service of nine years on the Board, and served as Chair ( ); Nan Griffiths, long-serving Chair of Building Committee, also remained the full nine year term; Christina Loeb was active on the Firestone and Executive Committees and spear-headed OAG s fundraising initiatives during her three years; and Scott Anderson and Bill Pristanski each served a three year term. We are pleased to welcome distinguished new Board Members Claudia Chowaniec, Lawson Hunter, Brian Mc- Garry, Gilles Paquet, Karen Prentice, Dorothy Speak and Shirley Thomson. I conclude with heartfelt thanks to our staff members, who rose to the challenges presented by such a significant year of programs and events with unreserved commitment and enthusiasm. 5 Rapport du président Marquée par le 20e anniversaire de la GAO et le 35e anniversaire de la Collection Firestone d art canadien, 2008 a été une année jalon. Et pour fêter ces vingt ans du musée d art municipal d Ottawa, nous avons planifié douze mois de programmes et d expositions exceptionnels, une publication commémorative de nos collections et des événements spéciaux, dont la célébration anniversaire , L art rend brillant. En mai, l encan d art XX, qui lançait les célébrations, a attiré un nombre record d invités et présenté des œuvres de plus de 65 artistes. Grâce à un comité de super bénévoles et la générosité des entreprises, restos et traiteurs locaux, l encan a recueilli plus de $ pour les expositions et programmes publics de la Galerie. Suivait en juin la 4e édition de L art du golf et ses partenaires, qui accueillait de nouveau le ministre fédéral, John Baird, et le ministre provincial, Jim Watson, comme mécènes honoraires. Hommage à la couleur, qui soulignait l amour de la couleur de cet important artiste d Ottawa. Les célébrations ont culminé en novembre par L art rend brillant, une ambitieuse collecte de fonds, qui a suscité de nombreux commanditaires et partenaires, dont plusieurs pour la première fois. Décrite par le quotidien, The Ottawa Citizen, comme «une fête maîtresse», elle a attiré 500 invités dans le Grand Hall du Musée canadien des civilisations, entourés d œuvres de la Collection Firestone d art canadien et de la collection d art contemporain de la Galerie. Celle-ci a travaillé avec le cabinet d architectes renommé de Toronto, Kuwabara, Payne, McKenna, Blumberg Architects (KPMB), pour concevoir la vision d un immeuble en s inspirant des besoins spatiaux que recommandait l étude de faisabilité de De plus, les membres du comité de construction ont collaboré avec la Ville et la Fondation de la Cour des arts d Ottawa au plan de réaménagement éventuel du site de la Cour des arts. Tous nos remerciements vont aux nombreux partenaires qui nous ont appuyé si généreusement en Mentionnons Shaw, Bell, Telesat, The Ottawa Citizen, TELUS, TD Canada Trust et le Fonds de l éducation de la Fondation des arts de l Ontario, sans oublier des particuliers, notamment Lawson Hunter, Greg Kane, Nan Griffiths, Jean-Pierre Gaboury, Glen Bloom et bien d autres encore. La Galerie doit aussi son succès à ses bénévoles et nous apprécions donc le dévouement des administrateurs, des bénévoles d ART vente et location, des participants aux comités du conseil et aux comités des événements spéciaux, ainsi que nos étudiants bénévoles. Ayant complété leurs mandats de , plusieurs administrateurs quittent le conseil de la Galerie et nous les remercions de leur généreux don de temps et de savoir-faire. Président en , Jean-Pierre Gaboury a terminé le mandat maximal de neuf ans au conseil; président de longue date du comité de construction, Nan Griffiths termine lui aussi un mandat complet de neuf ans; très active au comité Firestone et au comité exécutif, Christina Loeb a mené nos collectes de fonds durant ses trois ans à titre d administratrice; quant à Scott Anderson et Bill Pristanski, ils terminent tous deux un mandat de trois ans. C est avec bonheur que nous accueillons nos nouveaux administrateurs distingués Claudia Chowaniec, Lawson Hunter, Brian McGarry, Gilles Paquet, Karen Prentice, Dorothy Speak et Shirley Thomson. 7 Report from the Director The Gallery s anniversary year celebrations emphasized the importance of reaching out to all parts of our community. The breadth of our contemporary exhibition program was highlighted, with the inclusion of works by artists from near and far in a range of media. Buildup included paintings, ceramics, beaded and stitched work, and manipulated off-set lithographs by artists from Toronto, Ottawa, Barcelona and Los Angeles. Mary Anne Barkhouse: The Reins of Chaos proved a popular summer exhibition. The four dashing coin-operated rocking horses served as magnets for young children, while Barkhouse cheekily explored apocalyptic metaphors within the narrative of Canadian colonialist history. In Gallery 3, visitors were treated to the late Susan Kealey s visually arresting installation People Who Need People. Our major fall exhibition Evidence: The Ottawa City Project included work by 17 regional artists through whose eyes audiences were invited to explore Ottawa as a living city, looking at its overlooked margins, an alternative to official Ottawa. The final exhibitions of the year focused on Ottawa artists. Mark Marsters: Marsterpiece Theatre brought together an impressive selection of works by the late Ottawa artist, while Art that Works featured pieces from the Contemporary Art Collection purchased with funds from the Miss Mary Art that Works Fund, which was established in memory of Mary O Neil by a group of her friends for the benefit of the Gallery. Exhibitions from the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art included Deep Roots, looking at different styles of landscape, in which the iconic symbol of the isolated tree was featured. Our ongoing collaboration with high schools (École Secondaire Catholique Béatrice-Desloges, Canterbury and Colonel By) resulted in the exhibit Modulation, and the special anniversary exhibition Le Salon: Celebrating 35 Years of the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art featured important key works from the City-owned Collection. The final exhibition of the year, Laughing Matters, examined the various ways in which artists use humour in their work. The OAG seeks to provide innovative programs geared to diverse interests and groups. For instance, the Gallery initiated Articulation, a very popular series of critical art writing workshops in English and French with notable Canadian writers and editors. We also offer family workshops related to specific exhibitions, which provide an opportunity for adults to have as much fun as children. Moreover, our Art in the City summer camps are filled to capacity, with a new theme each year. Perhaps our most significant achievement in 2008 was the launch of the first component of Exhibition Connection, an ambitious web-based project undertaken with the financial assistance of the Rapport annuel

8 Ontario Arts Foundation, Telus and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. In collaboration with artists, teachers and web designers, the OAG created a bilingual on-line educational resource about contemporary art that includes hands-on art projects, activities, discussion topics, videos, podcasts, lesson plans and much more, based on selected OAG exhibitions. This past year saw a rich crop of bilingual, illustrated publications, including Oh So Iroquois, a trilingual publication in Mohawk, French and English, Media Povera and Mark Marsters: Marsterpiece Theatre, in addition to the handsome hardcover publication on our collections. Through purchases and donations, the Gallery is able to make meaningful acquisitions, and in 2008 works were added to the Firestone Collection as well as to the Contemporary Collection. Several works were purchased with the approval of the Board s Acquisitions Committee, thanks to the generosity of our Art Rental volunteers, Glen A. Bloom, the Walter & Duncan Gordon Foundation, and matching funds from the Canada Council for the Arts Acquisition Assistance Program. Our ART Rental and Sales volunteers worked hard at attracting new clients, and contributed $8,000 to the acquisitions budget in ART Rental and Sales is recognized for its valuable service to local artists as well as to individual art lovers and businesses in Ottawa. The members of our Board of Directors and our professional staff were extraordinary in their commitment and passion, ensuring that as many people as possible had the opportunity to participate in our special double anniversary year. I would like to thank each member of the staff for making a difference, and to acknowledge the dedication of the Gallery s Board members. In its first twenty years, the OAG established itself as a nationally-respected centre for visual and media art, emphasizing the vital role played by the artist in society while offering the visitor greater insight into life s complexities. We anticipate the next twenty years as a period of growth and consolidation, with the Gallery assuming a greater leadership role in the life of the city. 9 Rapport de la directrice Les célébrations de notre année anniversaire ont souligné l importance de rejoindre tous les groupes de notre communauté, et l ampleur de notre programme d expositions d art contemporain fut révélée par l inclusion d œuvres aux médiums très divers, créées par des artistes d ici et d ailleurs. Accumulation comprenait peintures, céramiques, lithos manipulées, œuvres perlées et textiles d artistes de Toronto, Ottawa, Barcelone et Los Angeles. Mary Anne Barkhouse. Les rênes du chaos a fait fureur durant l été. Ses quatre splendides chevaux mécaniques ont attiré les jeunes enfants comme des aimants, alors que Barkhouse explorait avec ironie les métaphores apocalyptiques dans l histoire colonialiste du Canada. Elle offre aussi des ateliers pour la famille sur certaines expositions, où adultes et enfants s amusent tout autant. Par ailleurs, toutes les places des camps d été de L art en ville, dont le thème est renouvelé chaque année, ont trouvé preneur. En 2008, notre plus grande réalisation est le lancement du premier volet d Expo-Exploration, un ambitieux projet web entrepris avec le soutien financier de la Fondation des arts de l Ontario, Rapport annuel

10 TELUS et la Fondation Trillium de l Ontario. En collaboration avec des artistes, des enseignants et des concepteurs web, nous avons créé, en ligne, une ressource éducative bilingue sur l art contemporain, comprenant projets pratiques, activités, sujets de discussion, vidéos, fichiers balados, plans de cours et, davantage encore, tous basés sur nos expositions. La dernière année a été riche en publications illustrées bilingues, notamment Tellement iroquois, une publication trilingue en mohawk, français et anglais, Techno Pauvre et Mark Marsters. Comédie humaine, sans oublier le magnifique catalogue relié de nos collections. Grâce aux achats et aux dons, nous pouvons faire de magnifiques acquisitions et, en 2008, nous avons enrichi la Collection Firestone et la collection d art contemporain. La générosité des bénévoles d ART vente et location, de Glen A. Bloom, de la Fondation Walter & Duncan Gordon, ainsi que les fonds jumelés du programme d aide aux acquisitions d œuvres d art du Conseil des Arts du Canada, nous ont permis de faire plusieurs acquisitions avec l approbation du comité des acquisitions du conseil. Avec l engagement et la passion extraordinaires qui les caractérisent, nos administrateurs et notre personnel professionnel ont veillé à ce qu autant de gens que possible puissent participer à notre double anniversaire spécial. Je veux remercier chacune de nos employés pour l importance qu elles y ont accordé et je tiens à souligner le dévouement des administrateurs. La Galerie a consacré ses premiers vingt ans à devenir ce centre d arts visuels et médiatiques respecté dans tout le pays. Elle a mis l accent sur le rôle essentiel joué par l artiste dans la société, tout en offrant aux visiteurs un regard pénétrant sur les complexités de la vie. Au cours des vingt prochaines, qui seront une période de croissance et de consolidation, la Galerie assumera un leadership encore plus marqué dans la vie de notre cité. La directrice, Mela Constantinidi Nos bénévoles d ART vente et location ont travaillé fort pour attirer une nouvelle clientèle et, en 2008, ont versé $ au budget d acquisition. 11 History, Mandate and Vision History The Gallery s history began in September 1988 with its opening as The Gallery at Arts Court, led by its dynamic first Director, Mayo Graham, under the aegis of the Ottawa Arts Court Foundation. In 1992, the City of Ottawa s recently acquired Firestone Collection of Canadian Art was transferred to the custodianship of the Gallery, renamed The Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG). The same year, Anne Doran and a group of energetic volunteers established the Gallery s attractive Art Rental and Sales Service. The incorporation of the Gallery as an independent charitable organization took place in 1993, with the election of its first Board of Directors and the appointment of Glen McInnes as Chair in the following year. In the mid- 1990s, annual funding from additional government agencies provided a more solid financial foundation for our evolving contemporary public programs. As the Gallery s annual budget increases incrementally, so does the number of staff, programs and services, allowing more people to participate through a variety of activities and events. About OAG The Ottawa Art Gallery is an independent non-profit public art gallery committed to the presentation, interpretation, dissemination and acquisition of contemporary art for the benefit of the local arts community. Our programs explore a variety of issues and include exhibitions, talks, lectures, tours, youth programming and publications. The Gallery has a growing Contemporary Art Collection of works associated with the region. It also houses the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art, which is presented through changing exhibitions. The Firestone Collection of Canadian Art is comprised of over 1,600 works of art assembled by Ottawa collectors O.J. and Isobel Firestone. Vision To be the most vital modern and contemporary visual arts institution in our community. Mission The Ottawa Art Gallery is a leader in our community. It is a cultural meeting place, actively developing relationships and fostering exchange between artists and the diverse facets of our community. Rapport annuel

12 Histoire, mission et vision Histoire Le premier des grands points de repère de l histoire de la Galerie est sans nulle doute son inauguration en septembre 1988 sous le nom de La Galerie à la Cour des arts, dirigée par Mayo Graham, sa première et dynamique directrice, sous l égide de la Fondation de la Cour des arts d Ottawa. En 1992, la Collection Firestone d art canadien, que la Ville d Ottawa vient d acquérir, est confiée à la Galerie renommée La Galerie d art d Ottawa (GAO). La même année, Anne Doran et un groupe de bénévoles énergiques mettent sur pied son attrayant Service de vente et location d œuvres d art. L incorporation de la Galerie comme organisme de charité autonome a lieu en 1993 avec l élection de son premier conseil d administration et la nomination de Glenn McInnes comme président l année d ensuite. Au milieu des années 1990, le financement annuel versé par de nouveaux organismes gouvernementaux consolide l assise financière de ses programmes publics d art contemporain en plein essor. L augmentation de son budget annuel mène à celle du nombre d employés et des programmes et services, ce qui permet de hausser la participation publique grâce à un éventail d activités et d événements. 26 ART Rental and Sales ART vente et location ART Rental and Sales is a volunteer-run initiative with a mandate to promote the work of contemporary regional artists through the sale, rental and exhibition of their works. In 2008, a total of 192 works were rented and 65 works sold. Any profits generated by ART Rental and Sales contribute to the acquisition of works for OAG s permanent collection. Dirigé par des bénévoles, ART vente et location a comme mission de promouvoir le travail d artistes vivants de la région par la vente, la location et l exposition de leurs oeuvres.
