4 CROSS COUNTRY PROGRAM OBJECTIVES From the results of the season, it is quite apparent that our women skiers did extremely well in North America, winning nearly all their events. When pitted against the best in the world, they are still behind. One must note, however, their performances at European races had greatly improved, and the women's relay team came very c lose to the Swedes at both the North American and the Shell Cup Canadian Championships at Whitehorse. With the men, there is still a gap to c lose to catc h the Americans. The objective of the Cross Country Program, therefore, is to close the gap between us and the best in the world by steadily increasing the level of our skiers on an average of six seconds per 5 km distance at every level, every year, for the next ten years, as well as absorbing the gains being made by the best during that time. The program hopefully will provide the structure, incentive, and right atmosphere to lift the performance level at the younger age and to attract more athletes to the sport in their formative years, so that top results at the international level become a Irequent occurrence rather than an exception later on. For the next ten years, a concentrated effort will be made at all levels to promote racing at a higher speed. With the younger skiers this means primarily shorter and faster races rather than longer and slower ones. With the more mature racer, adjustments and increases in training - volume, quality and types - will be made. At all levels, skiers must be exposed to tougher competition. The Women's Team is capable of skiing as a relay team with the best in the world and can also produce some excellent individual results. The short range target for this team is the 1980 Olympics with the 1978 World Championship in Lahti, Finland, in February as an interim stepping stone. The Men's Team will be made up of the top racers according to commitments and results in the early part of the season. Short range target of the men is to regain their position on a par with the U.SA A very vital role will be played by the Talent Squad which consists of those skiers right behind the National Team, as they push for a position on the team, aided by constant support and exposure to tougher competition. The Junior Team is a platform in the development ladder to the National Senior Team. The short range target for this team being the World Junior Championships in Quebec in 1979, with the European Junior Championships in 1978 considered as a building phase. The Junior Talent Squad is the key in the development program. As the lirst step up from the Divisional Program, the grooming of the elite athlete begins. At this level, in most cases, the racer will have his first exposure to the top racers in Canada and will witness the dedication, work load and desire of these skiers. These racers will have the opportunity to train and race In the company of skiers of equal or higher calibre. At thlslevel the better skiers wi ll get their first international exposure by skiing for Canada at the North American Championships or other advanced Competitions.. Presently the coaching of the National Team members rests in the hands of a team of coaches under the direction of Heinz Niederhauser former Regional Director of the Southern Ontario Di vision and Darrell Frank who was Regional Director for the North West Territories. With the resignation of long-time Chairman Dr. Skip Sheldon who devoted much of his time and efforts to the program, the chai rmanship of the Cross Country di scipline now belongs t.o Mr. Ralph McKim of King City, Ontario Ralph has been very active In the touring program with the Southern Ontario DIvISion.. So it is onwards and upwards for cross country enthusiasts and competitors with the World Championships in Lahti, Finland, In February, and the Shell Cup Canadian Senior Championships In March at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and the Shell Cup Juniors at Mont Ste. Anne, Quebec, also in March. SKI DE FOND OBJECTIVES DU PROGRAMME DE LA SAISON Selon les resultats de la saison , il est bien evident que nos fondeuses ont eu un eclatant succes en Amerique du Nord, remportant presque toutes les epreuves auxquelles elles etalent inscrites. Cependant, lorsqu'elles se mesurent a~x m.ellleu;es concurrentes du reste du monde, elles I/rent de I amere. D autre part, il faut souligner que leurs performances, lors des co,!rses europeennes, se sont beaucoup ameliorees et f'equipe femrnrne de relais s'est c/assee tres pres de f'equipe suedolse au cours des championnats nords-americains et les championnats canadlens en vue de la Coupe Shell, qui se sont deroules awhltehorse. Dans Ie cas des equipes masculrnes, ri faudra travalller encore davantage pour ratrapper les fondeurs amencarns. Par. consequent, robjectif du programme de ski de fond est de reduire la marge qui nous separe des merlleures equlpes du monde en rehaussant graduellement Ie niveau de competence. de nos skleurs, sur une base moyenne de 6 secondes par Skm de distance, a tous les niveaux, chaque annee, pendant les dlx procharnes annees, en plus de beneticier des gains qui seront realises par les mellleurs, au cours de cette periode de temps... On espere que Ie programme fourmra une certarne structure, une bonne motivation et une atmosphere adequates pour rehau~ser Ie niveau d'excellence chez les plus jeunes, et aussr, pour accrortre 101

5 i'interet d'un plus grand nombre d'athletes au cours de leurs annees de formation, de sorte que plus tard, les meilleurs resultats au mveau mternalional deviennent habituels et non une exception. Pend,ant les 10 prochaines annees, nous allons concentrer nos efforts, a tous les niveaux, dans Ie but de promouvoir une plus grande vltess~ lors des courses. Dans Ie cas des jeunes skieurs, cela slgnlfle d abord des courses plus courtes et plus rapides plutot que des courses plus longues et plus lentes. Dans Ie cas des skleur~ p/~s exp,.erimentes, if faudra apporter des modifications et accroltre I entramement dans les domaines suivants: intensite, qualite, genres, etc. En d'autres termes, les skieurs seron/' a tous les niveaux, exposes ades competitions plus difficiles.,. L 'equipe feminine est capable de se mesurer en qua lite d equipe de relals, aux meilleure equipes feminines du monde sans compter c;t'excellent~ resultats individuels. L'objectif acourt terme de cette equipe est I Olymplade de 1980 et les championnats mondlaux C/e Lahti en Fmlande, qui se derouleront en tevrier et qui servlfont d mtermediaire.. L'equipe masculin.e sera formee des fondeurs qui auront enreglstre les meilleurs resultats en debut de saison. L'objectif a court terme pour les hommes est de regagner leurs rangs au meme mveau que les sk,eurs des Etats-Unis.. Un role tres important sera assume pari'equipe des espoirs qul.est formee par les skleurs tout juste derriere ceux de I'equipe natlonale et qui anllclpent de falfe partie de cette derniere, aides parun appui contmu et une participation a des competitions toujours plus difficiles. L'equipe junior, d'autre part, servira de plateforme au cours de la formatl~n progressive des skieurs jusqu'a ce qu'i/s atteignent Ie mveau de I equipe natlonale senior. Le but acourt terme de celie equipe est sa participation aux championnats mondiaux junior de Quebec qui auront lieu en 1979; les championnats junior europeens sont con~lderes comme etape de preparation. L'eq Uipe des espoirs junior est la clef de tout Ie programme de formation. Comme premiere etape suivant Ie programme de division, Ie polissage de i'elite des athletes commence. A ce niveau, dans la majoflte des cas, Ie coureur se mesurera pour la premiere beaucoup de temps et d'efforts au programme, la presidence de la discipline du ski de fond a ete accordee a M. Ralph McKim de King City en Ontario Ralph a ete tres aclif dans Ie cadre du programme des tournees, au sein de la division du sud de I'Ontario. En conclusion, il est possible de dire que les enthousiastes et les competiteurs iront de I'avant de far;on progressive avec les championnats mondiaux de Lahti en Finlande, au mois de fevrier; les championnats canadiens senior pour la Coupe Shell qui auront lieu en mars a Sault Ste. He is responsible for the ehorts of national team s, both senior and junior, as well as the coaching staff working with the national teams. High on his list of priorities is the. development of a National Coaching Certification Program. Heinz left his native Switzerland in 1958, spent three years in Finland and then emigrated to Canada. Originally a pastry chef by trade, he trained in Sales Management before entering business of his own. His interest in soccer and other sports, his firm belief in physical fitness and the value of competitive excellence, and the desire to help young athletes led him to the coaching field. DIRECTEUR TECHNIQUE Apres trois ans en tant que directeur de programme et entraineur de la division du sud de I'Ontaflo, Heinz commence sa premiere annee en tant que responsable de toutes les activites comp~titives de ski de fond aux niveaux national et international. L'etablissement d'un programme national de certification des entraineurs est une de ses pfus urgentes priorites. Heinz quitta la Suisse, son pays d'origine, en 1958, passa trois ans en Finlande et immigra ensuite au Canada. O'abord chef piltissier de son metier if suivit un cours de directeur des ventes avant de monter sa propre entreprise. L'interet qu'il porte au soccer e/ a d'autres sports, sa ferme croyance en la condition physique et en la valeur de I'excellence dans la competition, et Ie desir d'aider les jeunes athletes en ont fait un entraineur. JOHN FINLAY ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, John has a backgrou nd in administ ration with the Red Cross and uni versity centres in Winnipeg, New York, and Ottawa. John has a B.A. in Economics from the University of Manitoba and is married with two children. John will be concerned with all financial aspects and internal ad ministration and communication of the program. 105

7 John is a recreational cross country skier and also enjoys cycling, camp Ing, reading and photography. A graduate of the Physical &Health Education program at Laurentian University, Darrell has been involved in coaching since Prior to joining the National Program he was the Cross Country Regional Director lor the Northwest Territories. His other main interests are hiking, kayaklng, and reading. Darrell will work full time with the National Program as a member of a team of coaches directing the program. Joan was the Canadian Junior Champion in both 1974 & 1975 and was also the American Junior National Champion in both the 5km and 7km event s. She was a member of the Canadian Olympic Team at Innsbruck. When not training or skiing, she finds time to do Indian craftwork which she learned while her family resided in Inuvik before moving to Alberta. Joan is a very good runner and especially strong in road marathon. EQU/PE NAT/ONALE Nee Ie 6 sept (20), Bonneyville, Alta. Ie club de ski Bonneyvil/e. Joan remporta Ie champion nat junior canadien tant en 1974 qu'en 1975 et remporta Ie championnat junior national americain pour la course 5km et celie de 7km. Quand elle n'est pas as'entrainer ou afaire du ski, elle trouve Ie temps pour I'artisanat indien qu'elle a appris afaire quand sa fa mille demeura ainuvik avant de s'installer en Alberta. Omineca Sk i Club In , Esther was Canadian Junior Champion and also British Columbia Provincial Champion in Esther was a member of Canada's Olympic Team in Innsbruck and also participated in the 1976 European Junior Championships. Esther is a very qualified swimmer and she is also interested in competitive ski-dooing, which seems to be in the family. She also takes great joy in riding her own motor bike.
