2 Message from the President/Message du président Brian A.P. FitzGerald Our Volunteer Awards for 2005 As part of our continuing volunteer program, the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) is proud to recognize the many valuable volunteer contributions of our members. An impressive number of awards, 21 gold, 129 silver, and 296 bronze have been given to our members since inception of the program in The program is administered in accordance with the Volunteer Recognition Policy, which is available on the CIA website. A gold award is presented to members who have contributed at least 12 periods of volunteer service, silver is awarded after six periods of volunteer service, and bronze is awarded after three periods of volunteer service. We are pleased to recognize another 50 members who have qualified for volunteer awards in This year there are 2 gold, 13 silver, and 35 bronze awards. On the pages of this brochure, you will find pictures and information about the recipients of the 2005 volunteer awards. On behalf of the CIA, I wish to thank all the award recipients, and in fact all our volunteers, for their commitment to our profession in Canada and beyond. Volunteer efforts are critical to the continuing success of the CIA, and to ensuring that our publics and our members receive the service they deserve. Prix décernés aux bénévoles en 2005 Dans le cadre de notre programme visant à souligner les efforts des bénévoles, l Institut canadien des actuaires (ICA) est fier de souligner la précieuse contribution volontaire de plusieurs de nos membres. Un nombre impressionnant de prix, 21 palmes d or, 129 palmes d argent et 296 palmes de bronze ont été décernés à nos membres depuis l instauration du programme en Le programme est administré conformément à la politique de reconnaissance des bénévoles, qui peut être consultée sur le site Web de l ICA. Une palme d or est décernée aux membres ayant consacré au moins douze périodes de bénévolat, la palme d argent est décernée au terme de six périodes de bénévolat et la palme de bronze est décernée au terme de trois périodes de bénévolat. Il nous fait plaisir de reconnaître 50 autres membres qui se qualifient pour un prix décerné aux bénévoles en Cette année, il y a deux lauréats de la palme d or, 13 de la palme d argent et 35 de la palme de bronze. Special achievements As a member, Vice-Chairperson and Chairperson of the Eligibility and Education Council from 2000 to 2004, Rob was able to actively participate in the ongoing development of a new actuarial education system. Prior to this role, as a member of the TF on CIA Qualifications, Rob was involved in the creation of the Practice Education Course, which is an important component of the Canadian actuarial education system today. Rob was also instrumental in the establishment of the CIA as an official co-sponsor of SOA and CAS exams. His efforts in all areas of actuarial education continue today as he supports the ongoing development of a truly Canadian actuarial education model. As a member of the Public Relations Committee, Rob was pleased to have been able to participate in the redesign of the Bulletin. Rob also served on the CIA Board as Director from 2001 to Rob is now working in Toronto as a Principal with Mercer Investment Consulting. His educational background includes an Honours BA in mathematics. In his spare time, Rob enjoys traveling and golfing a good match!. He also does some volunteer work (in addition to his countless hours as a CIA volunteer) and enjoys coaching minor sports. Réalisations dignes de mention À titre de membre, vice-président et président de la Direction de l admissibilité et de la formation de 2000 à 2004, Rob a pris une part active à l élaboration continue du nouveau système d éducation en actuariat. Avant d assumer ces fonctions, Rob a participé, à titre de membre du GT sur les critères d admission de l ICA, à la création du Cours orienté vers la pratique. Ce cours représente un élément important du système actuel d éducation en actuariat au Canada. Rob a également joué un rôle de premier plan en vue de l acceptation de l ICA à titre de co-parrain officiel des examens de la SOA et de la CAS. Il poursuit ses efforts dans toutes les sphères de l éducation en actuariat en continuant d apporter son appui aux efforts actuels déployés en vue de développer un modèle vraiment canadien d éducation en actuariat. À titre de membre de la Commission sur les relations publiques, Rob est fier d avoir participé à la nouvelle conception du Bulletin. Il a siégé au sein du Conseil d administration de l ICA à titre d administrateur de 2001 à Rob est actuellement à l emploi de Mercer Investment Consulting, à Toronto, à titre de directeur. Ses antécédents académiques incluent un baccalauréat spécialisé en mathématiques. Pendant ses loisirs, Rob aime voyager et jouer au golf une bonne combinaison! En plus du nombre incalculable d heures consacrées à titre bénévole au sein de l ICA, Rob aime être entraîneur sportif au sein des ligues mineures.

Each activity has been rewarding in its own way and has provided her with the opportunity to contribute to the profession and work with outstanding professionals. Nancy served on the CIA Council as Councillor from 1998 to She is now working as an actuary at the offices of Watson Wyatt Worldwide in Toronto. Her educational background includes a BSc from the University of Toronto, as well as an MA from the University of Western Ontario. In her spare time, Nancy enjoys cross-country skiing, traveling and photography. She also does some clowning and enjoys, in particular, working with children and the elderly. Elle possède un baccalauréat en sciences de l University of Toronto, de même qu une maîtrise en administration décernée par l University of Western Ontario. Pendant ses loisirs, Nancy s adonne au ski de randonnée, voyage et se passionne pour la photographie. Elle aime beaucoup travailler comme clown auprès des enfants et des personnes âgées.
