1 Canadian Winter Homeschool Materials include both English and French materials (the two official languages of Canada). These materials may be of interest to homeschoolers who are looking for non-religious and non-american content. Our methods are simple and old-fashioned; it is presumed that a parent will help the student to use the material. Canadian spelling is used in general. 2 Intermediate French - 10 Unit Studies General Each unit contains: one short text in French, a translation of the text in English, a list of vocabulary (words and phrases) from the text to be translated either from English to French or from French to English, and assignments (writing in French using your new vocabulary, other short grammar review exercises, and a verb to be reviewed with a verb page to fill in - the verbs are to be conjugated in présent, future simple, and passé composé.) Verbs reviewed in the 10 units are: faire, être, mettre, manger, venir, attendre, chasser, boire, écrire, se trouver Instructions Read the French text aloud. Read the English translation, to help you to understand the French text fully. Fill in the vocabulary words list. Memorize the words and do a short oral quiz (or a longer written quiz) to be sure you ve learned them properly. Complete the exercises. You may wish to read the French text more than once at some point during the proceedings (such as after translating the vocabulary words, or after reading the English translation), to better grasp the meaning. Repetition is necessary in order for new words and phrases to sink in. Reading aloud is helpful in developing good pronunciation. You may want to use one or two sentences from the text to do a dictée, that is, to read aloud while the student writes the sentences down. The teacher then checks the spelling and punctuation. This should only be done after the student has read the text two or more times. This exercise will reinforce the new words and help the student to learn French sentence structure. A recommended dictée is included after the vocabulary list. I suggest that the parent cut the verbs reference pages in half, making one verb available at a time for the student to review. You may wish to complete each unit over more than one day. These things take time! 3

4 en français Le Jardinage Voici une table. Sur cette table il y a plusieurs outils de jardinage. Qu est-ce que l on voit? Je vois deux gants de jardinage. Il y a aussi un petit pot. Il y a une paire de ciseaux. A coté des ciseaux, il y a une pelle. Une jardinière utilise une pelle pour faire un trou dans la terre. Puis, elle plante une graine dans le trou. Elle recouvre la graine avec de la terre. Finalement, elle arrose la plante. Pour donner de l eau à la plante, elle utilise un arrosoir. in English Gardening Here is a table. On this table there are several gardening tools. What can one see? I see two gardening gloves. There is also a small pot. There is a pair of scissors. Beside the scissors, there is a shovel. A gardener (female) uses a shovel to make a hole in the ground. Then, she plants a seed in the hole. She covers the seed with dirt. Finally, she waters the plant. To give the plant water, she uses a watering can. 5

In each of your sentences, use one of the words from the vocabulary list. Dans chacune de tes phrases, utilise un des mots de la liste de vocabulaire. There is a verb in this list. Il y a un verbe dans cette liste. Where is it? Où est-il? Use this verb once in one of your sentences. Utilise ce verbe une fois dans une de tes phrases. 2. Make two lists in your notebook, one list of feminine words from the vocabulary list, and one list of masculine words. Fais deux listes dans ton cahier, une liste de mots féminins qui se trouve ci-dessous et une liste de mots masculins. 3. Review the verb to do, make. Révise le verbe faire. Fill in the attached page.
