G rowing up in the Grand Duchy, an entire generation of the local Dutch community is now contributing to their adopted home through their myriad of talents and creative energies. For many, like Hugo Krijnse Locker, their parents came to Luxembourg to work in the European institutions and raised their families here. Also like many of his fellow Netherlanders, he returned here after pursuing university degrees elsewhere. Today Hugo has a thriving business as a producer and seller of organic vegetables, with loyal customers who seek out his stand in the Place Guillaume market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All day I speak Luxembourgish. When you speak the language, you understand the culture and, in fact, you become more Luxembourgish. Attending the European School here, Hugo was always interested in gardening. His career path took a different spin--pursuing an engineering degree in Trier and working for a time in the European institutions. But then I had a major switch in my decisions. I wanted to get back to what I really enjoy doing. Hugo s return to the land coincided with the organic initiative that gained momentum in Europe in the 1980s. Having its origins in the anthroposophical movement of Rudolf Steiner, the concept of biodynamic agriculture is part of an overall philosophy that reached to education (the Waldorf school), architecture (ecological design and function) and health care (the shift to alternative medicine). Cecile Somers, copywriter and author. Conceptrice-rédactrice et auteur. Creative Voice Cecile Somers voice can be heard all over Luxembourg. I m the one you hear in movie theatres, telling you to turn off your phone! Her official title with IP, the advertising network of the RTL group that covers radio, tv and film ads, is copywriter. We do everything from the initial idea to the actual production. She often does the voice-overs for the commercials, which is why her voice may sound familiar. Cecile s creative energies, though, extend well beyond the pages of advertising copy. A graduate of Leiden, the prestigious (and oldest) university in Holland, Cecile has always been drawn to writing, specifically English literature and linguistics. Her first children s book was published in 1997 and she has since written a novel and screenplay thanks to the worldwide initiatives of Nanowrimo and Script Frenzy, which challenge writers to produce a manuscript in a month. Her latest venture is an animated fairy tale, a co-production of Luxembourg and Latvia. A lot of projects are coming together now using all the skills that I ve picked up along the way. Now to just finish them! La voix de la création La voix de Cecile Somers se fait entendre dans tout le Luxembourg. «C est ma voix que vous entendez dans les cinémas, vous demandant d éteindre votre téléphone portable»! L intitulé officiel de son poste au sein de l agence publicitaire internationale IP qui fait partie du groupe RTL et travaille dans le domaine de la radio, de la télévision et de la bande-annonce, est celui de conceptricerédactrice. «Nous nous occupons de tout, du concept initial à la production». Mais la créativité de Cecile va bien au-delà de la rédaction de messages publicitaires. Diplômée de Leiden, l université la plus prestigieuse (et la plus ancienne) des Pays-Bas, Cecile a toujours été attirée par l écriture, plus particulièrement par la littérature anglaise et la linguistique. Elle a publié son premier livre pour enfants en 1997 et a depuis écrit un roman et une pièce de théâtre grâce aux projets internationaux Nanowrimo et Script Frenzy qui mettent les écrivains au défi de rédiger un manuscrit en seulement un mois. Son tout dernier projet est un conte de fées animé, une co-production entre le Luxembourg et la Lettonie. «J ai beaucoup de projets qui se mettent en place actuellement ils bénéficient de toutes les compétences que j ai pu accumuler tout au long de mon parcours. Il s agit maintenant de les mener à terme»! soil and the quality of crops from the overuse of chemical fertilizers. Rather than rely on synthetic pesticides, organic farming is based on biodiversity (rotating a variety of crops), composting and biological pest control. As a firm believer in this method, Hugo admits, I don t even know how to farm the chemical way. Organic gardening is a motivation you have in yourself. As an organic farmer as well as a vendor, Hugo understands the philosophy as well as the hands-on reality of the process. I worked for a year with one of the early pioneers of organic farming here in Luxembourg. I was in the field from the first planting of seeds to the final cultivation. I learned by doing it myself. With the growing environmental movement and the popularity of organic produce, so followed the need for protecting the standards of what could be labelled organic or bio. In Luxembourg, the Agricultural Association of Biologic Producers (BIOG), founded in 1988, promotes the sale of bio produce under strict international standards. The local associations of Demeter and Bio-Label, with their accompanying logo, ensure consumers that the farmers and growers respect those standards. Hugo worked for seven years at Naturata, Luxembourg s first supermarket for bio produce. He was key in getting the fresh-picked vegetables from the field and ready to display on the store shelves. The time line is purposely short. Once you have tasted the freshness of this produce, you won t want to eat anything else! Today, the organic initiative is booming. There are now six Naturata stores throughout the country, as well as the wholesaler Biogros that manages the distribution of products and a centre for bio products Oikopolis in Munsbach. Many customers still prefer to buy bio products in the traditional open-air markets, like the bi-weekly one in Place Guillaume. Hugo took over a small stand 11 years ago and has expanded the variety on offer. It has been so successful that I ve been able to buy more land to grow even more vegetables. He has a crew of workers to help sort and clean the seasonal vegetables that can go from field to market in the span of 24 hours. Parked next to his home in Mamer is a huge tent trailer (heated on cold days) that he reassembles at Place Guillaume, as well as at the smaller markets in Mamer and Strassen. Hugo becomes philosophical when he speaks of his trade: the connection to the earth, the effort to maintain a healthy ecosystem from the smallest in the soil to, ultimately, the well-being of those who consume what he has grown. He believes in the integrity of the process. It is like a contract you have with people. The best part for me, though, is still the process of planting and growing. It is the most beautiful; it is the best! 54
Les Néerlandais du Luxembourg La génération de Néerlandais ayant grandi au Grand-Duché apporte désormais sa contribution à son pays d adoption grâce à ses multiples talents et à sa créativité. Généralement, et c est le cas pour Hugo Krijnse Locker, leurs parents étaient venus au Luxembourg pour travailler au sein des institutions européennes et y ont élevé leur famille. Comme nombre de ses compatriotes, c est ici qu il a choisi de revenir après avoir obtenu ailleurs ses diplômes universitaires. Aujourd hui, Hugo est à la tête d une prospère entreprise de production et de vente de légumes bio, dont la clientèle fidèle vient chaque mercredi et chaque samedi faire ses achats sur son étal du marché de la Place Guillaume. «Je parle luxembourgeois toute la journée. Quand vous parlez la langue d un pays, vous comprenez sa culture et vous vous sentez en fait encore un peu plus luxembourgeois». Etudiant à l Ecole Européenne du Luxembourg, Hugo s est toujours intéressé à la culture de la terre. Mais sa carrière prend un tour différent il obtient un diplôme d ingénieur à Trèves et travaille pendant quelque temps au sein des institutions européennes. «J ai alors pris une importante décision. Je voulais revenir à ce que j aimais vraiment faire». Le «retour au pays» d Hugo a coïncidé avec la vogue du bio qui débutait en Europe dans les années 80. Issu du mouvement anthroposophique de Rudolf Steiner, le con cept d agriculture biodynamique fait partie d une philo - sophie plus globale qui couvre divers domaines comme l éducation (l école Waldorf), l architecture (design et fonction écologique) et la santé (utilisation de la médecine alternative). En matière d agriculture, le mouvement biodynamique a d abord été une réponse à une détérioration des sols et de la qualité des récoltes due à l abus de fertilisants chimiques. Au lieu d utiliser pesticides et régulateurs de synthèse, l agriculture biologique est basée sur la biodiversité (alternance des types de récoltes), le compostage et la lutte biologique contre les ravageurs. Adepte convaincu de cette méthode, Hugo admet, «Je ne sais même pas comment cultiver de manière chi mi que. L agri culture biologique, c est quelque chose qu on a en soi». Designer produit, Guido & Glas. Design Solutions Jan Glas does more than make his clients products appealing. Product design is not just decoration. It has to recognise the needs and the image of the client, and it has to be functional. Partnering industrial and graphic design, Guido and Glas Design is winning awards for its diverse design campaigns from corporate imaging to product packaging. Jan is especially proud of the Youth Hostel project, redesigning the visual identity of the ten youth hotels around the country and unifying them through an integrated style. It is the whole image that we always take into consideration. Jan grew up in Luxembourg and returned here after receiving a degree in industrial design from TU Delft, the largest technical university in the Netherlands. In 1996, working as an independent designer, Jan did drawing and computer graphics for short animated films. At that time, industrial design was almost non-existent here. Today that has changed, with corporate image closely tied to visual image. As for promoting the Dutch image as a whole? Jan laughs, Well, you might be surprised to know that we don t all drive caravans! Solutions design Jan Glas fait bien plus que de rendre attrayants les produits de ses clients. «Le design produit ne se limite pas à la décoration. Il doit prendre en compte les besoins et l image du client. Il doit aussi être fonctionnel». Combinant design industriel et graphisme, les projets très variés de Guido & Glas Design ont été récompensés par de nombreux prix. Jan est particulièrement fier du projet Auberge de Jeunesse où il était chargé de redéfinir «l identité visuelle» des auberges de jeunesse du pays et de leur donner une certaine homogénéité. «Nous prenons toujours en compte l image dans son ensemble». Jan a grandi au Luxembourg et y est revenu après avoir obtenu un diplôme de design industriel à l Université technique de Delft, la plus grande université technique des Pays- Bas. En 1996, alors qu il travaillait comme designer freelance, Jan a réalisé des dessins et des images de synthèse pour de courts films d animation. «A l époque, le design indus - triel n existait quasiment pas ici». Ce n est plus le cas aujourd hui, l image d une entreprise étant désormais étroitement liée à son identité visuelle. Et qu en est-il de la promotion de l image des Néerlandais en général? Jan rit, «Vous serez peut-être surpris d apprendre que nous ne conduisons pas tous des caravanes!» 55
Edith van den Heuvel, jazz singer. Chanteuse de jazz. Jazz Beats Jazz is something you create at the moment. By listening and tuning in to other musicians, you can create something new. A student of classical ballet, it was at university (in Utrecht) that Edith van den Heuvel began serious voice training, drawn to jazz and close harmony in particular. After completing a master s degree in Educational Sciences, she continued to sing from a capella harmonies with the Dutch group Dekoor to a string of Englishspeaking musical theatre productions, as well as performing with the local choral group Voices International. Her first solo with a big band came with Nils Wills Rhythm and Swing, and she is now the lead singer for Georg Ruby s contemporary jazz group Blue Art Orchestra. Edith is currently working on a CD of jazz standards with her own quartet, which has performed at the L inouï jazz club in Rédange and Sunday s Apero Jazz concerts at the Abbaye de Neumünster. It s all about communication. And also learning to let go so that something unexpected can happen! At home, it s not jazz riffs but Dutch lullabies that she sings to her children Noël and Louise. Jazz Beats «Le jazz est une musique qui se crée dans l instant. En écoutant et en s intéressant à d autres musiciens, on peut alors inventer quelque chose de nouveau». C est à l université d Utrecht, alors qu elle étudiait le ballet, qu Edith van den Heuvel a commencé à travailler sérieusement sa voix. Après avoir obtenu une maîtrise en Sciences de l Education, elle continue à chanter des harmonies a capella avec le groupe néerlandais Dekoor ou une série de comédies musicales en anglais, tout en se produisant également avec Voices International, la chorale locale. Elle chante son premier solo au sein d un big band avec le Nils Wills Rhythm & Swing, et est désormais la chanteuse principale du groupe de jazz contemporain de Georg Ruby, le Blue Art Orchestra. Edith enregistre actuellement un CD de standards du jazz avec son propre quartette qui s est produit au club de jazz L inouï de Rédange et lors des concerts «Apéro Jazz» dominicaux de l Abbaye de Neumünster. «C est une question de communication. Il faut aussi apprendre à lâcher prise pour que quelque chose d inattendu puisse arriver!» Chez elle, ce ne sont pas des riffs de jazz mais des berceuses néerlandaises qu elle chante à ses enfants, Noël et Louise. culture. «J ai travaillé pendant un an avec l un des tout premiers pionniers de l agriculture biologique ici au Luxembourg. J étais en permanence dans les champs, du semis à la récolte finale. Ce que je sais, je l ai appris en le faisant moi-même». Avec l essor de l écologie et le succès des produits bio, la nécessité s est fait jour de garantir la qualité de ce que l on appelle communément le «bio». Au Luxembourg, l association agricole des agriculteurs biologiques de Luxembourg (BIOG), fondée en 1988, s efforce de promouvoir la vente de produits bio respectant des normes internationales strictes. Grâce au label apposé sur leurs produits, les associations locales Demeter et Bio-Label garantissent au consommateur qu agriculteurs et maraîchers respectent ces normes. Hugo a travaillé pendant sept ans à Naturata, le premier supermarché bio du Luxembourg. Il était chargé de faire passer les légumes tout frais cueillis du champ aux rayons du supermarché. Ce délai est volontairement court. «Une fois que vous goûtez à la fraîcheur de ces produits, vous ne voulez plus rien manger d autre!» Aujourd hui, l agriculture biologique est en plein boom. Le Luxembourg compte désormais six magasins Naturata, ainsi que Biogros, un grossiste qui gère la distribution des produits et un centre dédié aux produits bio Oikopolis à Munsbach. De nombreux consommateurs préfèrent encore acheter leurs produits bio sur les marchés en plein air traditionnels comme le marché bi-hebdomadaire de la Place Guillaume. Il y a onze ans, Hugo reprenait un petit étal bio en s efforçant d élargir le choix des produits proposés. «Ça marche tellement bien que j ai pu acheter plus de terrain pour cultiver encore plus de légumes». Il emploie une équipe de salariés pour l aider à trier et nettoyer les légumes de saison qui peuvent alors «passer du champ au marché» dans un délai de 24 heures. Garée non loin de sa maison de Mamer se trouve l immense tente remorque (chauffée les jours de froid) qu il installe Place Guillaume, mais aussi sur les plus petits marchés de Mamer et Strassen. Lorsqu il parle de son métier, Hugo devient philosophe: le lien avec la terre, la préservation de l écosystème, «du plus petit organisme présent dans la terre», pour assurer au final le bien-être de ceux qui consomment les produits qu il cultive. Il est convaincu de l intégrité de ce processus. «Vous passez une sorte de contrat avec les gens. Mais c est lors de la plantation et de la culture que je donne le meilleur de moimême. C est ça le plus beau. C est ce qu il y a de mieux!» 56
