Present Tense of ER Verbs The basic form of the verb is the infinitive: Danser, Jouer etc In English, the infinitive consists of to plus a verb: to dance, to play etc In French, the infinitive is one word. Danser means to dance. In French, verbs most frequently follow a pattern. These patterns are broken into three groups ER, RE, and IR The most frequent infinitive ending is ER Formation of the Present Tense of ER verbs There are three easy steps to conjugating verbs: Step 1 Remove the ER ending. The remaining part is called the stem (la racine en français). Ex: danser becomes danser Stem = dans Step 2 Write down the stem Ex : dans Step 3 Add the appropriate ending that corresponds to the subject (je, tu, il/elle, nous, vous, ils/elles) Ex: Je danse Nous dansons The ending of all ER verbs follow the same pattern. The ER verb endings are: Je - e Tu -es Il/Elle/On -e Nous -ons Vous -ez Ils/Elles - ent Notez! The only pronounced endings are ons and ez. All the other endings are silent. If the subject is singular (qui, Sam, La classe etc ) the ending will be e If the subject is plural (Sam and Sara, les classes etc ) the ending will be ent There is only ONE form of the present tense in French. This one form corresponds to the three present tense forms in English: Je regarde = I watch, I am watching, I do watch. Exception = verbs that end in GER, keep the e for the pronoun nous ex: Nous mangeons
