4 Surf s up at Awty! Imagine the sway of the palm trees, the hint of an ocean breeze, sand, sea, and fun! It s not the beach but it s as close as it gets. Join us for The Awty International School s 2010 International Beach Ball and Auction! In light of the times, we re shedding the glitz and ball gowns and donning grass skirts and casual beach wear! Enjoy an evening on the boardwalk with great games, fabulous food, music, auctions, and loads of fun for all. This is Awty s largest fundraising event of the year and the first casual gala ever. As the chairs of the 2010 International Beach Ball and Auction, we are delighted to announce that the Honorary Chairs are Virginia and Ray Leiker, who have supported Awty in many ways for over 14 years. Many thanks to them for displaying the passion and dedication to Awty that exemplifies what an enthusiastic and supportive family means to Awty. They have our heartfelt appreciation! Be sure to mark your calendar for March 13 when the fun begins. Consider purchasing a table, a ticket, or making a donation. We depend on the support of our families to make our events successful, and all proceeds will benefit the operating budget of the school. Thanks to the efforts of our many volunteers, the generosity of our supporters, and Awty s dedicated staff, this benefit promises to be a major fundraising success for our students and our school. 6 Honorary Chairs Virginia and Ray Leiker The Awty International School has been at the heart of Virginia and Ray Leiker s family for many years. Their daughter, Amanda, graduated from Awty in Mr. Leiker served on the Board of Trustees for 14 years. In recognition of his exceptional work in promoting international education, Mr. Leiker received the 2004 European Council of International Schools Award. Mr. Leiker joined Bailey Architects in 1977 and was named a Principal in He is an active member of both regional and state architecture societies. His involvement includes serving as president of the Houston Architecture Foundation in 2006, president of the American Institute of Architects/Houston Chapter in 2001, and vice-president of the Texas Society of Architects in He was also a leader in establishing the Houston Architecture Center. Mr. Leiker obtained his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kansas State University. Virginia Leiker, EdD, currently serves as the Associate Dean and Director of Educational Leadership in the College of Education at St. Thomas University. She previously served in public education for 33 years in campus and district administration, including 12 years as principal of Memorial High School. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts from Kansas State University and Masters of Education from the University of Houston, Dr. Leiker was awarded her Doctorate in Education from Baylor University. The Leikers are long-time Houstonians, arriving in 1972 from Kansas. They have been married for 40 years and have a daughter, Amanda, and two granddaughters, Sara and Madison.
