4 Mission and objectives Mission et objectifs ENGLISH Engaging Youth in National Civic Service As Canada s leading national youth service program for Canadians aged 17 to 21 years old, Katimavik s mission is to foster the personal development of our nation s young people through a challenging program of volunteer community work, training and group interaction. Our objectives? To contribute substantially to the personal, social and professional development of the participants, to promote community service and offer a diversified experience fostering a better understanding of the Canadian reality. FRANÇAIS Mobiliser la jeunesse par le service civique national À titre de principal programme de service volontaire pour la jeunesse au Canada, Katimavik a pour mission de favoriser le développement personnel des jeunes, grâce à un programme stimulant de volontariat communautaire, de formation et d interaction en groupe. Nos objectifs? Contribuer de façon significative au développement personnel, social et professionnel des participantes et participants ; promouvoir le service à la communauté ; offrir une expérience diversifiée favorisant une meilleure compréhension de la réalité canadienne. Katima-what? Katima-quoi? ENGLISH How many times have those of us who already know about the Katimavik program heard this question: Katima-what? In order to better understand how our program of learning through volunteer service works, we have spread throughout this report some vignettes taken from our participants experiences before, during and after the Katimavik program. It will help you to understand why young Canadians have been motivated to join our program, to see the diversity of the Katimavik experience and to hear about the successes of our alumni. She also knows that she wants to take a year off from her studies because, as she says: It is very important for me to do something to help my country before going to university. 7 I don t know what to do exactly... Allison Myggland doesn t want to enrol in college right away because she doesn t know what she wants to do yet. Allison believes a volunteer program such as Katimavik is a good alternative to college for teens who don t know what they want to do with the rest of their lives. There were a lot of programs that I looked into, said Allison. But this one seemed the least selfish. I m kind of hoping I ll be able to find myself, you know, find out what I want to do. I just graduated from high school and I am still not sure what I want to take in post-secondary education, so this is the perfect opportunity for me to see a bit of Canada and meet other people my age while having a little more time to make my decision as to schooling. The 18 year-old feels the program will help her develop leadership and communication skills that will help her later in life. Heather has deferred her acceptance to York University to take part in Katimavik. Je veux acquérir des compétences en leadership... My friend was several years older and was having trouble with Grade 12. After spending nine months in the program, he came home a completely different person and eventually graduated with honours. Katimavik is a national leader in providing unique opportunities for volunteerism to Canada s young people. With support from the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage, Katimavik places participants in exciting servicelearning programs with community partners across the country. When young people contribute their energies to community projects, all Canadians benefit. I would like to commend everyone involved with this special organization for their generosity and service toward their community. I am certain that Katimavik will continue to earn great respect for its initiatives and will thrive as a meeting place where young Canadians can flourish. Please accept my best wishes for every success as you go on to meet the challenges of the years ahead. 12 message from the chair of the board of directors message du président du conseil d administration ENGLISH For nearly four years, my responsibilities as Chair of Katimavik s Board of Directors have allowed me to meet thousands of young Canadians. From the time they were in kindergarten, every young man and woman has been asked incessantly: What do you want to be when you grow up? The problem is, that s the wrong question; it s an attempt by society to define people through simple labels. The question that should really be asked is: What do you want to do when you grow up? We need our future citizens to take action, to be builders and shapers of society, to understand that it is what they do that matters most. Through its program based on learning through volunteer service, Katimavik provides a structure for participants to acquire the people skills that will help them eventually gain abilities and tools that will benefit both them and society as a whole. Recognized and implemented worldwide, learning through volunteer service or FRANÇAIS Depuis près de quatre ans, mes responsabilités de président du conseil d administration de Katimavik m amènent à rencontrer des milliers de jeunes Canadiennes et Canadiens à qui l on demande continuellement, depuis leur entrée à la maternelle : «Que veux-tu être plus tard?» Est-ce là la bonne question à poser, sachant que la société tente de définir les personnes par de simples étiquettes? La véritable question devrait être : «Que veux-tu faire plus tard?» Il importe que nos futurs citoyens et citoyennes agissent, bâtissent et façonnent notre société et comprennent que ce qui compte le plus est ce qu ils font. Par son programme d apprentissage axé sur le service volontaire, Katimavik offre un cadre où l apprentissage du savoir-être permet d acquérir des compétences et des outils qui profiteront tant aux participants qu à la société. 13 E service learning is a socio-educational concept based on community involvement through volunteer work. Katimavik participants put their skills to work to help others and, by so doing, make a positive contribution to society s development while enhancing their own learning experience. In order to encourage citizen engagement, community organizations coordinate this service-learning initiative. Equip yourself to find the path to realize your hopes and dreams, is the answer I always give the young Canadians I meet. And that s exactly what Katimavik has been doing for nearly 30 years. Having helped more than 27,000 young men and women shape their identity and contribute to their country s social and economic development, Katimavik is an institution that reflects Canada s collective values. We can be very proud of Katimavik. May this organization that does such a wonderful job of promoting national civic service continue to grow and thrive! 14 message from the executive director message du directeur général ENGLISH This past year, more than 650 non-profit organizations in 105 communities benefited from the volunteer services of over 1,000 young Canadians who care deeply about their personal and professional development and who want to help build a nation in their image: dynamic, responsible and concerned about preserving a democratic social climate in a healthful environment. In , we continued improving our program of learning through volunteer service, a program that benefits both the participants and communities involved. Take, for example, Matt Smith 1, whose skills acquired during his Katimavik experience underpinned his decision to study paramedicine at University of Toronto, or Melissa Edge 2, who has wanted to become a veterinarian ever since she worked at an SPCA in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. These examples speak volumes about the structuring and structured framework provided by Katimavik. This framework helps participants learn more about themselves so that they can make life choices that are in harmony with their values and their personalities. When a parent writes us to say that their child has returned from the program totally transformed and proud of being able to communicate in French, we are touched FRANÇAIS Cette année, plus de 650 organismes sans but lucratif répartis dans 105 collectivités ont bénéficié des services bénévoles de plus d un millier de jeunes Canadiens soucieux de se développer sur les plans personnel et professionnel et de contribuer à l édification d un pays à leur image, un pays dynamique, responsable et soucieux de maintenir un climat social démocratique dans un environnement sain. Au cours de l année , nous avons poursuivi le perfectionnement de notre programme d apprentissage par le volontariat, qui profite tant aux participants qu aux collectivités engagées. Pensons à Matt Smith 1, qui grâce aux compétences acquises lors de son expérience Katimavik a décidé de poursuivre des études en sciences paramédicales à l Université de Toronto, et à Melissa Edge 2, qui souhaite devenir vétérinaire depuis qu elle a travaillé dans une SPCA à Salmon Arm, en Colombie-Britannique. Ces exemples témoignent du cadre structurant et structuré offert par Katimavik, cadre qui permet aux participants de mieux se connaître et d ainsi faire des choix de vie conformes à leurs valeurs et à leur personnalité. Quand nous recevons la lettre d un parent nous disant que son enfant est revenu complètement transformé du programme et que ce dernier est fier de pouvoir converser en anglais avec des gens de partout au pays et dans le monde, nous sommes touchés et comprenons que Annual Report Rapport annuel KATIMAVIK

15 E and reminded yet again that the Katimavik experience opens the eyes, heart and horizons of members of Canada s younger generation to their potential, in a perspective of community involvement. Then there are the extremely eloquent tributes from our partner organizations, like the one from Tannis Arsenault, RSW, of the Northern Alberta Brain Injury Society in Edson, Alberta, who called Katimavik participants role models for youth. Or another from Nancy Lévesque of Pivot-Jeunesse in Dubreuilville, Ontario, who stated that participants presence and enthusiasm helped rebuild the small industrial forest community s confidence in the future for all of its 900 residents. Such testimonials encourage us to redouble our efforts to fulfil our mission, increase such successes and contribute to making our country such a wonderful place to live and a source of inspiration worldwide. This past year the last of our three-year agreement with the Department of Canadian Heritage also saw the implementation of projects that will ensure Katimavik s continued pursuit of the excellence that it has strived to attain since its founding. One of Katimavik s priorities, therefore, is understanding and anticipating the needs of F Katimavik ouvre les yeux, le cœur et les horizons de la relève canadienne sur ses possibilités et ce, dans une perspective d engagement dans la collectivité. Encouragés par de tels témoignages, nous redoublons d ardeur pour concrétiser notre mission, multiplier les réussites de ce genre et contribuer à faire de notre pays un lieu où il fait bon vivre et une source d inspiration à l échelle mondiale. Nous avons également lancé, au cours de cette dernière année de notre entente triennale avec le ministère du Patrimoine canadien, des initiatives grâce auxquelles nous pourrons continuer à exceller, excellence sans cesse poursuivie par Katimavik depuis sa fondation. Pour Katimavik, comprendre et pressentir les besoins des jeunes et des organismes partenaires dans le but d actualiser notre programme de leadership constitue donc une priorité. À la suite de la consultation menée l an passée auprès de chefs autochtones, inuits et métis, nous élaborons un Message from the Executive Director Message du directeur général 13

16 E young people and partner organizations with an eye to keeping our program up to date. Following last year s consultation with Aboriginal, Inuit and Métis leaders, we are developing a program tailored to Northern realities. The implementation of this program is contemplated in the near future. We are also working together with prominent universities to establish agreements that will allow young people to obtain university credits for participating in the Katimavik program. Katimavik believes that helping young people discover themselves by developing their creative and productive potential on a daily basis, and putting this potential to work for the benefit of Canadian communities, are key steps in their passage from teenager to young adult. The Katimavik experience will accompany them their entire lives as they carry out their civic responsibilities. As our Prime Minister says in his message at the beginning of this Annual Report: all Canadians benefit! F programme adapté aux réalités du Nord. Selon Katimavik, le fait d aider les jeunes à se découvrir en exploitant au quotidien leur potentiel créatif et productif et en faisant profiter de celui-ci aux collectivités canadiennes constitue l une des clés du passage réussi de l adolescence à la vie de jeune adulte. Cette expérience les suivra toute leur vie durant dans l exercice de leurs responsabilités civiques. Comme le souligne le Premier ministre dans son message du présent rapport, ce sont tous les Canadiens qui en profiteront. 18 Report on activities Rapport des activités A year of consolidation and development to promote a long-term national civic commitment ENGLISH A learning program based on modern leadership Katimavik s leadershipdevelopment program, which focuses strongly on current realities and needs, is based on the concept of learning through volunteer service. Besides acquiring invaluable professional experience by working on projects in various host communities, participants benefit from a learning program that focuses on developing their leadership skills, learning French or English, adopting a healthy lifestyle, discovering Canada s cultural diversity and gaining an awareness of environmental issues. This year, in conjunction with their work programs, the groups completed projects that drew on many of the skills they had acquired, honed or updated through the program. A group volunteering in the town of Penetanguishene, Ontario, designed, produced and hosted more than 10 shows on local radio station CFRH during the winter of Children (and their parents!) in Minnedosa and Wasagaming, Manitoba, were Une année de consolidation et de développement pour favoriser l engagement civique national à long terme FRANÇAIS Un programme d apprentissage axé sur le leadership moderne Bien ancré dans les réalités et les besoins actuels, le programme de développement du leadership de Katimavik s appuie sur le concept de l apprentissage par le volontariat. Non seulement nos participants acquièrent une précieuse expérience professionnelle en contribuant à des projets au sein de différentes communautés d accueil, mais ils tirent aussi parti d un programme d apprentissage axé sur le développement des compétences en leadership, l apprentissage des langues officielles, un mode de vie sain, la découverte de la diversité régionale et une prise de conscience des enjeux environnementaux. L apprentissage constitue un élément fondamental du programme. En effet, les participants développent des habiletés professionnelles et sociales et leur développement personnel est favorisé par l ajout d activités d apprentissage structurées au cours des neuf mois du programme. Cette année, parallèlement à leur placement de travail, des groupes ont réalisé des projets mettant à profit bon nombre des habiletés acquises, approfondies ou actualisées pendant le programme. Un groupe accueilli par la ville de Penetanguishene en Ontario a conceptualisé, produit et animé à la radio locale, CFRH, plus de 10 émissions à l hiver Les enfants (et parents!) de Minnedosa et Wasagaming au Manitoba, ont apprécié le spectacle d Halloween monté par les participants en collaboration avec les résidants des deux communautés 1. 19 E highly entertained by the Halloween show put together by Katimavik participants in conjunction with residents of both communities. 1 The second group of participants who stayed in New Westminster, British Columbia, for a year, created a natural habitat for sick birds. Another group helped children hospitalized at the Centre hospitalier de l Université Laval in Québec City create beautiful presents for their mothers on Mother s Day in May Yet another group raised over $1,000 for the Red Cross in western Newfoundland. These few examples demonstrate the extent to which Katimavik participants are motivated by creativity, coupled with the desire to contribute to their host communities. Diversified work projects with major impacts Whether it was cleaning and maintaining paths in Odell Park in Fredericton, organizing the Festival des Cerfs-volants kite festival in Québec City, designing a website for the Fort Albany First Nation Band Office in Ontario 2, guiding tours through the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village east of Edmonton or volunteering to teach elementary school children at Edmonds Community School in Burnaby, British Columbia, the 650 organizations in the 105 host communities truly appreciated the volunteer work done by Katimavik participants. Among the grateful communities was Princeton, British Columbia, whose residents told the local newspaper in March 2006: Organizations in this city have become used to the dynamism and enthusiasm of Katimavik participants; the assistance they provided will be sorely missed and sooner or later, we will be feeling the impact of their departure. 3 F groupe de participants hébergé à New Westminster en Colombie-Britannique pendant l année a aidé à créer un habitat naturel pour les oiseaux malades. 21 E Development of a project adapted to the realities of Northern Canada Katimavik has initiated discussions with representatives of the three territories in Northern Canada on the possibility of setting up an inter-territorial youth program created by and for the North. Based on the Katimavik model, the program will consist of various aspects, including volunteer service, development of leadership skills, intercultural exchanges and learning programs adapted to the realities in the North. We anticipate that participants in this program will be awarded high school credits from the education departments in each of the territories. Katimavik plans to work with the territorial governments throughout the program-development phase, including the selection of financing partners. University credits in recognition of learning acquired through Katimavik In keeping with our efforts of previous years that saw us enter into agreements with Capilano College and Malaspina University-College, both in British Columbia, to award credits to our participants, we developed a recognition framework that we presented to four other leading Canadian universities in April Once these partnerships will have been established, we intend to negotiate similar agreements with other universities across the country. S appuyant sur le modèle Katimavik, ce programme comprendra différents volets volontariat, développement du leadership, échanges interculturels et programmes d apprentissage adaptés aux réalités du Nord. Nous prévoyons que les participants pourront obtenir des crédits (de niveau secondaire) auprès des ministères de l Éducation des différents territoires. Katimavik travaillera en collaboration avec les gouvernements territoriaux tout au long de l élaboration du programme, y compris pour ce qui est du choix des partenaires de financement. 22 E End of the three-year agreement with the Department of Canadian Heritage The end of the fiscal year also marks the end of our three-year agreement with the Department of Canadian Heritage. We were informed in early March 2006, that the agreement would be extended for three months up till June 15. As of July, our funding has been further extended until August 2007, enabling us to proceed with the next group of participants for this year. Our longer-term funding agreement will be known in January 2007, once the current government completes its comprehensive review of all government programs. 35 Photo Bonnie Findley A typical (busy!) day in Katimavik On workdays we get up around 7:30 a.m. to walk to work. I m working as an educational assistant at an elementary school with children who have behavioural and intellectual needs here in Trenton, Ontario. I love the experience. It s great for my leadership skills. We come home around 4:30 p.m., have dinner, and do planned activities like language practise, physical activities and talk about things that can help the environment. I am also learning lots on how to live with a group, compromise and conflict resolution. In a given week, two of us stay at home to cook and clean. I love to cook, but not so much the cleaning. 36 Photo Luisa Richardson An environmental project on Baikie Island Young people from across Canada have replaced invasive alien species near the water by planting hundreds of native plants such as Pacific ninebark and sweet gale, an aromatic wetland shrub, along the new back channel as part of the ongoing rehabilitation project of Baikie Island in British Columbia that will require up to 10 years of maintenance and weeding. The result will return vital habitat for fish and birds to the heart of Campbell River. It s rewarding work, because it is easy to see what we have accomplished, says Rebecca Feltham, participant from Brampton, Ontario. Children lined up (some more than once) to have the screams scared out of them by pool employees and Katimavik volunteers. November 4, A fresh coat of paint for the walls of the Drummondville Food Bank In October of 2005, the Drummondville group lent a helping hand to the local Food Bank by adding some new colour to the walls. One of the participants, who also works for the Food Bank and now has quite a bit of cooking experience, prepared a wonderful meal for all the volunteers who helped to make the food bank a more beautiful place. The exhibit was designed and implemented by Sierra at the Centre d interprétation du patrimoine de Sorel-Tracy with the help of numerous members from her host community. The Katimavik group in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, brings cheer to the Humber Valley Complex retirement home. The residents don t get many visitors, says Tim Derrington, participant, from Moncton in New Brunswick. So they greatly appreciated that we were there to talk to and help serve the traditional turkey dinner on such a special day. For most of us participants, it was our first time away from home for Christmas. It was actually very interesting to see a change in the usual traditions that we are accustomed to. Everyone agreed to revisit the retirement home. 40 Photo Bonnie Findley Opening up to embrace personal potential Prior to Katimavik, I was working with the Students Commission, facilitating workshops to youth in schools, shelters and youth centres about stereotypes, drug abuse and role models. I had benefited from this program myself in the past. After a while, I wanted to do something different. Leave Toronto to see Canada and get some work and life experience. Months later, I still have the telling me I was accepted into the program. My highlights of the program have been meeting people and living in a group of 12. I have learned to be more patient and that, sometimes, things just take time. I have had time to reflect on myself, open up and exchange with people and that has made me a MUCH happier person. I plan to go back to Toronto and find a job to put some money away to go to university or to become a chef. Who knows, there is so much out there I want to do and I m only 19 years old. 43 Photo Nicole Giasson Helping spread traditional Ukrainian culture in Edmonton The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is the first historical site in Alberta to host Katimavik. Each trimester, the living history museum takes between six and eight participants. One of the key areas of work is interpretation. Participants get to wear traditional Ukrainian clothing and play character roles. As the village hosts thousands of tourists, participants get to interact directly with the visitors and maintain their character role. While in character, they may be baking bread, making traditional Ukrainian food, working in a blacksmith shop, gardening, making crafts, etc. In the picture above, Justin Carkum, Lindsey Read and Matthew Biddle pose in costume in front of a historical house at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. 44 Source: The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, Nova Scotia, april 5, A display on climate change for children in Cochrane The Polar Bear Habitat & Heritage Village and the Lake Abitibi Model Forest (LAMF) were happy to unveil the new Climate Change Display designed for children but which also provides factual information to the adults. The display consists of four tree-shaped panels, which weave a story of how planet Earth, its forests, oceans and all its organisms are connected and interlinked. The LAMF s Katimavik volunteer Keitha Langston from Calgary spent numerous hours researching the content and creating the display: This project was the best part of Katimavik for me, since it was all about the environment and global warming, which are very important issues for me. 45 Photo Giorgi Dolidze A new recycling program in Caraquet thanks to Katimavik! Two participants from the Katimavik group in Caraquet, New Brunswick, Edith David from Québec and Lauren Leclerc from British Columbia, have implemented a new recycling project at the École Élémentaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys. The new project involves ten classes from the first to eighth grade. Edith and Lauren gave a presentation to the students in order to explain the importance of the environment along with showing them different activities that can be done to help save the planet. In cooperation with the person responsible for recycling in each class, they gather the school s paper and cardboard together on a weekly basis in order to recycle it. The recycled paper is then stored away temporarily in Katimavik s garage until it is given a new life after being sent off to a recycling centre. Both the students and teachers alike have greeted the project with much interest. The students were curious about the recycling program and had many questions about it. They now know that any small act that they can accomplish will make a big difference to tomorrow s world. Un programme de recyclage voit le jour à Caraquet grâce à Katimavik! 46 Gaining knowledge to help youth on the reserves When I was in school, I was mostly looking out for myself, trying to make ends meet. Katimavik gives you the opportunity to work on yourself and your skills while you are surrounded by support. It is a safe way to go out and see Canada and help others while you re helping yourself. My goal is to go back on the reserve after the program with all the knowledge I gained and help the youth there. My eyes, spirit and knowledge. I am here to give you a guiding hand. It is your choice to take it. The res is a sad world, but heaven is out there, it s just beyond your eyes. Parents continue to stop me on the street and tell me how working with Adam did wonders for their child s self-esteem. Before I started the Katimavik program, I was having trouble deciding between a career in teaching or starting a small business in finance and investment. Now the decision is easy, through my work projects some fund-raising for a youth centre in Bathurst, New Brunswick, then being a Big Brother in Williams Lake, British Columbia, and now working with youth full-time at a youth centre in Hawkesbury, Ontario, I realized that I loved working with youth and want to make a career out of this passion. 48 The Youth Spirit Award awarded to Katimavik in Sault Ste. Marie! Katimavik participants from the program year were the recipients of the Youth Spirit Award from the United Way in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. A beautiful commemorative statue has been created in their honour. A project coordinator was there with two participants from the current program year to receive it. The groups from last year and this year have been working together on developing a United Way Youth Council to try and encourage more young people to come together to support their community. This year, participants are continuing the initiative, under the support and supervision of Maureen Dodd, Resource Development Manager. The Youth Spirit Award is given to a youth who exemplifies leadership and volunteerism. The youth must work or volunteer at any United Way-funded program, initiative or service, have made a significant, exemplary and noteworthy impact in the field of service, and be a true partner of United Way, helping the United Way make a difference in the community. The 100 Mile GROW Centre, which provides alternative routes to graduation in British Columbia, unveiled a brandnew logo thanks to skills that Gillian Imhoff has developed in her previous rotation. The logo created by Gillian, participant from Winnipeg, Manitoba, represents growth that comes from knowledge. It will be used on business cards, t-shirts as well as on the windows of the school. 50 Making the difference in Dubreuilville, Ontario Dubreuilville only has 900 residents. We wouldn t exist if it wasn t for the forest industry. Last year we faced a critical and problematic time. The survival of the village was in jeopardy. People were discouraged, most didn t want to get involved in the community and our volunteers were becoming more and more tired. Everything changed the day our first Katimavik participants arrived. It was as if there was a total metamorphosis in the town. The young people were enthusiastic and ready to make a difference in our town. They gave us back our lives and our desire to get involved in the community. What s more, they accomplished so much in the short period of time that they were here. Volunteering makes a difference. Yes, sometimes it is difficult but it is worth it. The Katimavik program is important in a community like ours. Because of the lack of resources, personnel and even knowledge, our services are sometimes limited. 57 Photo Bonnie Findley From 0 to 80% bilingual When I started the program, I couldn t speak a word of English. One month later, I was already speaking full sentences in English! I was surprised that I could learn the language so quickly, especially since in high school I always did poorly in English. My Katimavik group helped me a lot by speaking slowly and repeating frequently. By my second rotation in Picton, Ontario, I was ready for a workshop with an English teacher and I was learning even more on my work projects. Now, I consider myself 80% bilingual and I have friends everywhere in Canada. This will help me find a good job, travel some more in Canada and hopefully abroad AND with my new skills, I can even teach English to my parents so they can travel too! 58 Photo Heather Lee A confidence booster Prior to her Katimavik experience, Heather Lee felt she already had leadership and communication skills but it is in the program that she became more confident about using these skills. My work project for the Southeast Early Childhood Interventionist Program (ECIP) in Redvers, Saskatchewan, actually let me organize a fundraiser/talent show and that was a BIG confidence booster for me. In Katimavik, I decided that I was a good public speaker and presented information well. I would now like to make the most of these assets in the environmental field. Heather will resume her degree in environmental studies at the University of Toronto this fall (2006) which she had deferred to participate in Katimavik. 59 Second generation Katimavik-ers Earla (Cassels) Legault, who participated in the Katimavik program, was happily surprised when she heard that her 20-year old son had been accepted to participate in the program. For her, Katimavik had been synonymous with an exciting journey and had given her the added confidence she needed to go on to college. When you do Katimavik you feel like you can do anything afterwards! My son André has just gotten back from his nine-month journey and I see that the Katimavik magic has worked its charm on him as well. He has a greater appreciation of his parents and home, and his confidence has been built up. Twenty thousand dollars is the amount of the first major grant that Martin Trahan received from the Garfield Weston merit scholarship for colleges. Martin, who is presently doing his technical degree in social work at the Cégep Marie-Victorin, was able to maintain an average of 91% in his studies while being involved with volunteer work for a number of organizations and social causes. Martin also received a bursary to direct a documentary on youth and poverty and will receive the Lieutenant Governor s award next September Currently involved as a youth counsellor, he aspires to become a project leader with Katimavik soon and to one day be active in politics. 61 Successful studies that lead to a great career Gabriel Rose graduated with distinction from the University of Victoria in 2005 with a bachelor of commerce degree. He participated in the Katimavik program before attending university and he is now working with the B.C. Ministry of Health. While I learned and discovered many things during my time at Katimavik, the most important part remained unconscious for months and sometimes years afterwards. It was my awareness of the intricacies of human interaction which was most affected and expanded during the program. Whether it was working on group projects during the bachelor of commerce program at the University of Victoria over the following years, travelling and studying with students from across the world while on academic exchange in France, or working with colleagues of varying backgrounds in my current position as Project Coordinator for the Provincial Laboratory Coordinating Office at the B.C. Ministry of Health, I continually realize that the people skills I developed with Katimavik have proved invaluable. 62 Giving back while fulfilling her dreams At 17, I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do, my life plan was set, I was enrolled in school, I had everything ready until I heard about Katimavik. It gave me a second chance at life and made me realize that anything I could dream, I could do. Through the support of my amazing group and my ever-devoted project leaders, I set out on a journey where I had the opportunity to meet the real Geneviève. I knew I would enjoy giving back to the program that enlightened me and gave me the chance to live the best life I can. Through the years, I am proud to say that I have been a worksite supervisor, an LKC chair, a billeting family, a project leader, a replacement project coordinator and a communications and development manager all for Katimavik. The journey has been incredible: it opened my eyes to new possibilities and helped me become a better person. 64 The confidence he needed to make theatre his life! The theatre director Fernand Rainville recently said that his experience in the Katimavik program allowed him to discover and nurture his talents as a leader and organizer essential skills indeed when you want to succeed in the field of theatre. It gave me the confidence I needed to go to the National Theatre School (in Montréal) and that is what really got the ball rolling. At the age of 46, the kid from Moulin à Fleur in Sudbury has almost 60 directorial credits as well as playing several roles in theatre, television and film. La confiance de faire du théâtre sa vie!
