2 Ambassadeur du Festival welcome Il est inutile de réfuter que Nollywood, le nom donné à l industrie du cinéma nigérian, est devenu une marque mondiale. Cependant, quels bénéfices ou retours sur investissement cet engouement global a-t-il produit pour l industrie sur son propre sol ou, plus précisément, pour le cinéaste nigérian? Voilà là où se situe l ironie du phénomène Nollywood! Nous sommes encore loin d atteindre les sommes astronomiques ou les box-office que les industries équivalentes en Inde et aux Etats-Unis engendrent. Malgré le fait que Nollywood redéfinisse le concept de cinéma africain allant à l encontre des perceptions euro-centrées imposées, Nollywood est considéré comme une culture bizarre tant au niveau de la forme que du contenu. La nouveauté qui s est transformée en industrie est considérée comme de qualité médiocre et inférieure. Que cela nous plaise ou non, Nollywood raconte l Afrique et ses réalités d un point de vue africain. C est pour cela que la projection de quelques modestes projets du Nollywood d aujourd hui au sein de ce festival signale une renaissance et une appréciation renouvelée envers la jeune industrie. Plus de 90% des films nollywoodiens consommés globalement sont piratés ou vendus illégalement. Le festival, grâce à ses organisateurs, apporte aux cinéastes de Nollywood ainsi qu à leurs films une opportunité rare et ouvre une fenêtre sur de nouveaux marchés légitimes et touche un nouveau public. There s no gainsaying the fact that Nollywood, the acronym for the Nigerian motion picture industry, is a global brand; however, what level of yield or return on investment has this global acclaim brought to the industry at home or more appropriately the Nigerian filmmaker? Here lies the irony of the Nollywood phenomenon! It is yet to experience the staggering sales or box office returns that its counterpart in India or U.S.A. command. Despite its redefining the concept of African cinema against the foisted Eurocentric perceptions, Nollywood is regarded as a freak culture both in form and content. The novelty that has become an industry is yet looked upon as substandard and inferior. Like it or not, Nollywood tells the African story and its realities from its perspective. This is why the showcasing of a few modest offerings from today s Nollywood at this festival signals a renaissance and renewed appreciation for the fledgling industry. Over 90% of Nollywood films consumed globally are either bootlegged or pirated. The festival through its organizers, therefore, avails Nollywood filmmakers and their films a rare opportunity and window of new and legitimate markets and audiences. 3 édito Nollywood, ou l industrie dont on parle mais qu on ne voit pas ; voilà le paradoxe qui est à l origine de la création de ce festival. Au delà des articles, des reportages, des documentaires qu on peut lire ou voir sur Nollywood, il est important que les films soient accessibles dans cette place centrale et si importante pour le cinéma qu est Paris. Si nous sommes aujourd hui les seuls à proposer les films nigérians au public parisien, nous espérons que cette situation évoluera et que les films que nous montrons ici seront bientôt plus largement accessibles dans ce pays et plus largement dans l espace francophone. C est là un des objectifs principaux de ce festival du cinéma nigérian. Huit longs-métrages sont au programme, six films en compétition et à la clé un prix du Public avec un enjeu plus important que l année dernière. A travers les films sélectionnés pour cette 2eme édition, c est un panorama plutôt complet de la société nigériane que les spectateurs sont amenés à découvrir. Le concept de dialogue culturel prend tout son sens pendant ces quatre jours de festivités. Aside from the articles, reports, and documentaries that we read and see about Nollywood, it is also important that the films are made accessible in the cinema capital of the world, Paris. Today we are the only festival offering Nigerian films to a Parisian audience but we hope that over time this will change and that the films we show here will soon be largely available not only in France but throughout the Francophone world. This is one of the objectives of NollywoodWeek film festival. Eight feature length films make up the program of which six are in competition for the prize: the Audience Award where the stakes are higher than last year. These four festive days shall be marked by true cultural exchange as the audience will be exposed to various aspects of Nigerian society through the films selected. These six films represent some of the most anticipated and awarded films in Nigeria from the previous year and cover a diversity of genres. Within this selection, we have romantic comedies, psychological thrillers, dramas, satirical comedies, as well as stories based on true events and book adaptations. This range of selected films aim to do what films do best: stir the viewer s emotions and reflections, initiate dreams or on the contrary, depict harsh realities to bring forth action. This very Selection will have one film that will be more impelling and you have the final word to choose that film with the Audience Award. At the end of each film, you will grade the film and on Closing Night, the winning film is announced. The director of the winning film not only receives the title of festival winner but will also benefit from a special lens from Angenieux to use in their next production and an acquisition deal from Canal + Afrique. 18 biyi bandele Réalisateur Director Half of a Yellow Sun Biyi Bandele-Thomas est un romancier et dramaturge nigérian connu pour avoir adapté en 1997 le roman de son confrère nigérian, Chinua Achebe, «Le Monde s effondre». Biyi a grandi dans le nord du Nigéria et a étudié l art dramatique à l Obafemi Awolowo University de Lagos. Depuis 1990, il a élu domicile à Londres. En tant que dramaturge, Bandele a travaillé avec le Royal Court Theatre, la Royal Shakespeare Company et a rédigé des fictions radio et des scénarii pour la télévision. Il a reçu la bourse Judith E. 20 Michelle Bello Productrice & Réalisatrice Producer & Director Flower Girl Michelle Bello est une cinéaste nigériane passionnée qui a reçu de multiples récompenses internationales. Elle adore raconter des histoires africaines et les présenter au monde entier. En 2007, Michelle a produit et réalisé son premier long métrage intitulé Small Boy qui remporta deux African Movie Academy Awards dans les catégories «Meilleure direction artistique» et «Meilleur jeune acteur» au Nigéria. Son second film, Flower Girl, est devenu numéro 1 aux box-office nigérian et ghanéen. Il a également été présenté en avant-première aux Etats-Unis au Hollywood Black Film Festival et a été diffusé sur trois des plus grandes chaînes de cinéma du Royaume-Uni, faisant de Michelle la première réalisatrice nigériane à voir son film diffusé dans les cinémas britanniques. This year, at the 2014 Africa Magic Viewer s Choice Awards, Michelle was awarded the prestigious Trailblazer Award for her commitment and demonstrated talent, her versatility and potential for cutting-edge approaches to African cinema.

21 Comment votre carrière a-t-elle débuté? J ai d abord travaillé en tant que productrice associée sur une série TV à succès diffusée sur MNET puis j ai tourné un clip musical qui a été récompensé. Plus tard, cette année-là, j ai produit et réalisé mon premier long métrage : «Small Boy». J ai récemment tourné mon deuxième long métrage, «Flower Girl», après avoir obtenu un Master en réalisation cinématographique aux Etats-Unis. Pourquoi le cinéma? J ai grandi en regardant beaucoup de films hollywoodiens et je suis tombée amoureuse de l art de raconter des histoires. Quelle a été votre motivation derrière «Flower Girl»? Tourner «Flower Girl» était important pour moi car j avais l impression que les gens avaient oublié ce qu était le véritable amour. Les jeunes couples nigérians se marient pour les mauvaises raisons. Je voulais vraiment raconter cette histoire d amour pour les inspirer et les encourager à explorer au plus profond leur couple avant de sauter le pas. Comment s est passée la production de Flower Girl? Le tournage a duré trois semaines dans environ 10 endroits différents à Lagos au Nigéria. C était un plaisir de tourner en décors réels tels que des restaurants, des magasins de vêtements, une église et l aéroport international. C était important pour moi de montrer la beauté de Lagos au public international et je pense avoir atteint mon but. Quelle est la suite pour vous au sein de Nollywood? En ce moment, je travaille sur mon troisième long métrage ainsi que sur d autres projets de plus petite envergure. J ai de grandes exigences et je ne me complais pas dans la médiocrité. How did your career begin? My standards are high and I don t settle for mediocrity. I started working as an Associate Producer on a hit TV show which was broadcasted on MNET. Then I went on to shoot an award winning music video and later that year produced and directed my first feature film «Small Boy». I recently shot my second feature film «Flower Girl» after obtaining a Masters Degree specialising in Film Directing in the US. Why filmmaking? I grew up watching a lot of Hollywood movies and I fell in love with the art of storytelling. Motivation behind Flower Girl? It was important for me to make «Flower Girl» because I felt like people had forgotten what real love is all about. Young couples in Nigeria get married for the wrong reasons. I really wanted to tell this love story to inspire them and encourage them to look deeply into their relationships before tying the knot. Production of Flower Girl? It took us three weeks to shoot [in] over 10 different locations across Lagos, Nigeria. It was fun shooting in real locations like restaurants, clothing stores, a church and the international airport. It was important for me to show the beauty of Lagos to international audiences and I believe I achieved my goal. What s Next for you and Nollywood? Focus Michelle Bello I am currently working on my third feature film as well as other smaller projects.

22 Kenneth Gyang Producteur & Réalisateur Producer & Director Confusion Na Wa Kenneth Gyang est un producteur et réalisateur de cinéma et de télévision aux multiples récompenses. Il est le cofondateur de Cinema Kpatakpata, une société de production de cinéma. Le scénario du premier long métrage de la société, Confusion Na Wa, a été sélectionné en 2010 au Durban Film Mart en Afrique du Sud et a remporté de nombreux prix. Le deuxième long métrage, Blood & Henna, un drame politique et romantique en langue haoussa, a été nominé dans six catégories aux African Movie Academy Awards de Kenneth Gyang a étudié la production cinématographique au National Film Institute et l écriture de scénario à l institut Imagine de Gaston Kaboré à Ouagadougou au Burkina Faso. En décembre 2013, Kenneth a fait partie des «cent gardiens du futur» honorés par le président nigérian. Kenneth Gyang is an award-winning producer and director for Film and Television and co-founder of the film production company Cinema Kpatakpata. The company s first feature film script Confusion Na Wa was selected as part of the 2010 Durban FilmMart in South Africa and won numerous awards. His second feature film, the Hausa-language political love story Blood & Henna, was nominated in six categories at the 2013 African Movie Academy Awards. Kenneth Gyang studied Film Production at the National Film Institute and screenwriting at Gaston Kabore s IMAGINE in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. In December 2013, Kenneth was chosen as one of 100 Guardians of the Future honoured by the President of Nigeria.

23 Focus Kenneth Gyang Comment votre carrière a-t-elle débutée? J adorais les radios à ondes courtes étant jeune parce que toutes les radios locales arrêtaient leur diffusion à minuit donc je me suis mis à écouter le BBC World Service. Je suis tombé amoureux de la radio mais je me suis inscrit au National Film Institute en pensant que ça me permettrait de concrétiser mes rêves. En vain. Je suis devenu scénariste mais je n aimais pas la façon dont mes œuvres étaient réalisées alors je me suis lancé dans la réalisation. Mon premier court métrage Mummy Lagos a gagné plusieurs prix et j ai fini par travailler avec la BBC après le Berlinale Talent Campus de Comment vous situez-vous au sein de Nollywood? Plein de films différents sont produits au sein de chaque industrie dans le monde. Au Nigéria, c est la même chose. Est-ce que je produis des films à petit budget comme les films de Nollywood? Oui. Est-ce que mes productions sont de qualité médiocre comme on peut en trouver dans l industrie? Non. Comment s est passé le tournage de ce film? Le tournage a duré 15 jours à Kaduna durant une crise politique lors de laquelle beaucoup de personnes ont perdu la vie. L ironie, c est qu on était parti de Jos, Plateau State, à cause de l explosion de violence làbas. Alors qu on allait tout juste se mettre à tourner, la violence nous avait poursuivi jusqu à Kaduna. Il y a une scène dans le film où le personnage de Bello dit «il y a une crise chaque année, c est un vrai festival». C est drôle parce que c était presque comme on l avait prédit. Votre prochain film? Notre prochain film sera un film de gangsters se déroulant dans l un des plus gros villages du monde, Lagos. Pour moi, Lagos est un village car il n y a qu au village qu on manque d électricité et d eau. How did movie making start for you? I loved short wave radio growing up because all the local radios close by 12am [so] I took to listening to the BBC World Service. I fell in love with broadcasting but enrolled into the National Film Institute thinking it will take me to my dreams. It didn t. I became a writer and then didn t like how my work was being directed, started to helm my writings. My first short film Mummy Lagos won several awards and I ended up working with the BBC after the Berlinale Talent Campus in How do you situate yourself within Nollywood? There are different kinds of films made in every industry in the world. In Nigeria we have the same. Do I make low budget films like Nollywood films? Yes. Do I make substandard productions like some films produced in the industry? No. What was the shooting schedule like for this film? The principle photography was 15 days in Kaduna during a political crisis where a lot of people lost their lives. The irony of that was, we shifted production from Jos, Plateau State because of the outbreak of violence there. Just when we were about to start, the violence followed us to Kaduna. There is a scene in the film where Bello s character says there is crisis yearly, like a festival. That is funny because it was almost like we predicted it. Next film? Our next film is a gangster film set in one of the biggest villages in the world, Lagos. Lagos for me is a village because it is only in the villages that you don t have power (light) and water.

Pour l instant, je ne peux pas en dire plus mais c est là que je puise mon énergie depuis quelques mois. En parallèle, je vais travailler sur un soap-opera. Racontez-nous votre histoire au sein de Nollywood. J ai débuté en 1996 en tant qu actrice pour le théâtre, la télévision et le voice-over tout en étudiant les Arts Dramatiques et la production cinématographique et télévisuelle à Lagos State University. Parce qu il m en faut toujours plus, je me suis aventurée dans le monde de la réalisation puis de la production. Après cinq années à travailler en tant que réalisatrice pour une émission, j ai fondé ma propre société, Sunbow Productions Ltd et j ai commencé à tourner certaines de mes propres productions, y compris «The Young Smoker» et «Till Death Do us Part». Je suis actuellement en masterclass de réalisation à l Ecole de Film de Colorado à Denver. Nous avons beaucoup trop de problèmes pour nous permettre de nous divertir avec des films. What is your Nollywood story? I started out in 1996 as an actress on stage and screen and a voice over artiste while studying Theatre Arts, TV & Film Production from the Lagos State University. The thirst for more led me into the world of directing first, and then producing. After 5 years working as director on a show, I moved on to set up my own company Sunbow Productions Ltd and started shooting some of my own productions, including The Young Smoker, Till Death Do Us Part etc. I am know undergoing a masterclass in filmmaking at the Colorado Film School, Denver. How long did it take to shoot Journey to Self? We shot Journey To Self over a period of 10 days altogether. It was important to us to stay within the available production budget and also to keep the intense tempo of the story going. It was tough and intense and somewhat of a tall order, but we made it happen. All the actors and crew were on ground, giving their very best round the clock till the filming was completed. What s next? Currently, pooling funds for my next film, which deals with the themes of unity in diversity and love. At this point, i cant divulge more but it is what has got me fired up the past few months. While doing this, I will be working on a soap opera as well. We have too many problems to sit and just entertain ourselves with films. I seek change and healing for the world in my works as a director. 25

27 Focus Daniel Emeke Oriahi Qu est-ce qui vous a insufflé le goût du cinéma? Quand j étais enfant, ce qui m importait le plus, c était de m asseoir devant la télé de 21 pouces de mon père et regarder sa collection d épopées de guerre et de James Bond qu il avait rapportée au Nigéria. Avec le temps, j ai développé un profond intérêt pour certains acteurs et j ai plus tard été captivé par ceux qui faisaient opérer la magie c est-à-dire les réalisateurs. Comment vous situez-vous au sein de Nollywood? Après avoir été poliment remercié d un poste en réalisation, je suis parti explorer les chemins de l anxiété et du manque d estime de soi. On m a ensuite fait découvrir des cinéastes exceptionnels tels qu Andrei Tarkovsky, Lars Von Trier, Terrence Malick et ma compréhension des styles et théories cinématographiques s est agrandie. Leur approche du cinéma a su me redonner foi en la vie. L idée de m aventurer à Nollywood m a d abord repoussé mais j ai fini par me souvenir d un cours que j avais suivi qui m avait encouragé à apprécier les dynamiques au sein de l industrie qui s étaient formées à partir de nécessités économiques. En tant que cinéaste en herbe, j ai commencé à voir le positif et mettre de côté le négatif et en tant que Nigérian, j ai choisi d accepter mon destin qui me conduirait à être décrit comme un cinéaste nollywoodien. Le tournage de MISFIT a duré combien de temps? Dix jours avec un planning de tournage de sept à dix scènes par jour. Cela a été possible car le scénario comportait peu de scènes en extérieur, de personnages ou de dialogues. La suite? Un road movie retraçant la vie d un conducteur de taxi à Lagos. How did Moviemaking start for you? As a child, what mattered most was sitting in front of my father s 21inch television, watching a collection of War epics and James Bond movies that my father had brought back to Nigeria from abroad. With time I took a keen interest in several actors and further down the line, became conversant with some people behind the magic like the Directors. How do you situate yourself within Nollywood? After being politely fired from a directing job and left to wander the path of anxiety and low self-esteem, I was introduced to great filmmakers like Andrei Tarkovsky, Lars Von Trier, Terrence Malick and my understanding of cinematic styles and theories began to expand. Their approach to Cinema had its way of making me believe in life again. The thought of venturing into Nollywood initially repulsed me but then I remembered a course I took that exposed me to appreciate the dynamics behind an industry that was formed out of economic necessity. As an aspiring filmmaker I began to see the positives, discard the negatives and as a Nigerian, choose to accept the fate of being described as a Nollywood filmmaker. How long did it take to complete MISFIT? 10 days with a shooting schedule of 7 to 10 scenes per day. This was possible because of the script s few locations, characters and limited dialogues. What s next? A Road movie chronicling the life of a Lagos Taxi driver. 27
