Cette publication documente deux années d'activités de L'École de design Nantes Atlantique entre 2013 et L'ouvrage est divisé en 10 chapitres, renvoyant aux valeurs fondamentales qui nous animent à propos du design, de l'enseignement du design et de son rôle dans nos sociétés. EDITO ÉDITO In 1998, with the help of local and regional authorities, L'École de design Nantes Atlantique was built on the Chantrerie campus amongst some top-tier higher education establishments (grandes écoles): the foundations for an exciting adventure in development. L'École de design has become a benchmark institution in the region, in France and all over the world, with 1200 students in 2015 on the school s three sites in Nantes, Shanghai and Delhi. The teaching program has become increasingly professional and international and partnerships with companies and institutions have been strengthened. Student projects are ever more sophisticated, evolving from the creation of concepts to real and tangible innovations. Budding designers have a new sense of responsibility, and now understand that ideas even the most brilliant are not enough unless you bring them to life. has thus become a center for innovation where designers are entrepreneurs developing projects to serve companies and society as a whole. It is a forum for connections and exchange in a broad range of disciplines The creation of the design-led research chair on Connected Environments in 2014 reflects this development. The pivotal role of the designer is to generate sound ideas and to give them meaning and value at a time when the future is uncertain and the notion of progress needs to be redefined. En 1998, grâce aux collectivités territoriales, L'École de design Nantes Atlantique s installait sur le campus de la Chantrerie parmi de prestigieuses grandes écoles : le socle d une formidable aventure de développement. L École de design est devenue un établissement de référence sur le territoire, en France et dans le monde entier, avec 1200 étudiants en 2015 sur ses 3 sites de Nantes, Shanghai et Delhi. Le programme pédagogique s est professionnalisé et internationalisé, les partenariats avec les entreprises et les institutions se sont consolidés. Les projets des étudiants évoluent, passant de la création de concepts à de réelles innovations tangibles. L étudiant futur designer, investi d'une nouvelle responsabilité, comprend dorénavant que les idées même les plus géniales - ne suffisent pas si l'on ne leur donne pas vie. est ainsi devenue un centre d innovation où les designers sont entrepreneurs de leurs projets au service des entreprises et de la société en général. Un lieu de rencontre et de partage avec les disciplines les plus diverses La création de la chaire de recherche par le design «Environnements connectés» en 2014 consacre cette évolution. Travailler à l'émergence des idées justes, leur donner sens et valeur, tel est le rôle clé du designer au moment où l avenir est incertain et où la notion de progrès doit être redéfinie. 3 L ÉCOLE DE DESIGN NANTES ATLANTIQUE L École de design Nantes Atlantique is a non-profit state-approved private higher education institution in design supported by the Nantes Saint-Nazaire Chamber of Commerce and Industry. OUR ACTIVITIES REVOLVE AROUND 4 MAIN VALUES THAT LAY THE FOUNDATION OF OUR VISION OF DESIGN: the recognition of creative workers as true professionals; the promotion of design as a strong economic asset; design as an innovation-generating process; fostering a type of design that tackles social, economic and environmental issues in a responsible way. As a result, our teaching activities are based on numerous exchanges between education, research and the business world, thanks to closely-knit ties with the industry. A VARIETY OF COURSES & TEACHING METHODS We specialize in teaching design via standard courses, work-study programs and continuing education: Master s Degree in Design certified by the French Ministry of Higher Education: undergraduate courses are now divided into 4 majors based on the different design professions (Spatial Design, Graphic Design, Interaction Design and Product Design); postgraduate courses are organized around topicoriented MDes programs focusing on contemporary social and economic issues, with possible double degrees; work-study learning run by the Vocational Training Center dedicated to Creation and Industrial Innovation. These courses lead to BTS (2-year vocational diplomas), work-study Bachelor s degrees and Master s degree in Design; continuing education. STRONG LINKS WITH THE BUSINESS WORLD Our institution also provides business services, and puts much effort into promoting design: we offer internships, work-study learning agreements, prospective studies, collaborative projects, themed events, trend-monitoring and consultancy. Four Centers for Design & Innovation bring together experimental Design Labs, MDes programs and seeding of innovative projects. LOCALLY COMMITTED, GLOBALLY CONNECTED was founded in 1988, and has been located on the Atlanpole La Chantrerie technological campus in Nantes (France) since The only institution of its kind in Western France, our school has been following an international, outward-looking policy for over a decade: internationalization of the curricula: welcoming foreign students, facilitating student exchanges to promote the international dimension of our Nantes-based site; international development: China Studio in Shanghai (China) and India Studio in Delhi (India), and signing of international partnerships to spread our know-how on a worldwide scale; gaining international fame: participating in networks and international events to give value to the projects carried out by our students and the knowledge produced within our institution. is a member of a wide variety of professional organizations and academic networks. DES MODES D ENSEIGNEMENT DIVERSIFIÉS Notre métier principal est l enseignement du design par la voie académique, par la voie de l alternance ou dans le cadre de la formation continue : enseignement dans le cadre du Diplôme de design bac + 5 visé par le ministre de l Enseignement supérieur, aujourd hui organisé en cycle bachelor par grands métiers du design (espace, graphisme, interactivité, produit) et en cycle master par programmes thématiques à dimension socio-économique, avec des doubles diplômes possibles ; formation en alternance dans le cadre du Centre de Formation des Apprentis (CFA) création et innovation industrielle, délivrant BTS, licences professionnelles et formations de niveau master en apprentissage ; formation continue. UN LIEN FORT AVEC LE MONDE DE L ENTREPRISE En outre, nous assurons une mission de services aux entreprises et de promotion du design : stages, contrats en alternance, études prospectives, projets collaboratifs, organisation d événements thématiques, veille et conseil. Quatre centres de design et d innovation thématiques regroupent aujourd hui Design Labs expérimentaux, programmes pédagogiques et activités de soutien à l innovation. 5 CARE DESIGN LAB MEANINGFUL PARTNERSHIPS DES PARTENARIATS SIGNIFICATIFS Le Confluent, a private healthcare group in Nantes, and L École de design Nantes Atlantique signed a 3-year framework agreement on January 29, 2015; the agreement includes the development of seminars and prospective studies in the health sector until Le Confluent, groupe hospitalier privé à Nantes, et L École de design Nantes Atlantique ont signé un accord cadre de 3 ans, le 29 janvier 2015 ; des séminaires et des études prospectives dans le secteur de la santé seront ainsi développés jusqu en and the Gérontopôle Autonomie Longévité (Research Center for Aging) signed a partnership agreement on April 23, 2014 to work together on health and well-being in senior citizens using design methodologies. et le Gérontopôle Autonomie Longévité ont signé une convention de partenariat le 23 avril 2014 afin de coopérer sur les thèmes de la santé et du bien-être des séniors en s appuyant sur les méthodologies du design. 9 PROJECTS DEDICATED TO THE SILVER ECONOMY 9 PROJETS DÉDIÉS À LA «SILVER ECONOMY» A NEW DESIGN LAB FOCUSED ON HEALTH, QUALITY OF LIFE & SOCIAL INNOVATION UN NOUVEAU DESIGN LAB ORIENTÉ SANTÉ, QUALITÉ DE VIE & INNOVATION SOCIALE After the creation of the READi Design Lab on Digital Culture, the Sustainable Cities Design Lab on the various aspects of Urban Design and the New Eating Habits Design Lab on Food Innovation, has developed a new platform devoted to health, quality of life and social innovation. Après la création du READi Design Lab sur la culture numérique, du Ville durable Design Lab sur les différents aspects du design urbain et du Nouvelles pratiques alimentaires Design Lab sur les innovations dans le secteur de l alimentation, L École de design Nantes Atlantique développe une nouvelle plateforme dédiée à la santé, la qualité de vie et l innovation sociale. Since January 2014, the Responsible Innovation program at L École de design Nantes Atlantique is backed up by a new research platform called Care. Led by Gaël Guilloux (engineer, designer, author of a doctoral thesis on the question of integrating use value into design, and leading expert in the integration of users in design), Care focuses its research activities on the user, independence and improvement of quality of life for all, from children to the elderly. The close examination of these research perspectives with the concrete involvement of targeted users has already enabled to sign high value-added partnerships at both a national and international level. For example, the TANGO project (Towards A New InterGenerational Openness), backed by the European Commission, was developed by students on the Responsible Innovation Master s program and the Graphic Design undergraduate program in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and Aalto University School of Arts (Finland). NB: Responsible Innovation was divided into two separate programs in 2015, Sustainable Innovation and Health & Social Innovation. Depuis janvier 2014, le programme Innovation responsable de L École de design Nantes Atlantique, est adossé à une nouvelle plateforme de recherche intitulé Care. Piloté par Gaël Guilloux, ingénieur-designer auteur d une thèse de doctorat sur la question de l intégration de la valeur d usage dans le design et personnalité référente sur l intégration des usagers dans la conception, Care centre ses axes de recherche sur l utilisateur, l autonomie et l amélioration de la qualité de vie pour tous, des enfants aux personnes âgées. La mise en perspective de ces angles de recherche avec une implication concrète des utilisateurs ciblés a déjà permis à de signer des partenariats à haute valeur ajoutée, aussi bien au niveau national qu à l international. Le projet TANGO (Towards A New InterGenerational Openness), soutenu par la Commission Européenne, a été ainsi réalisé par des étudiants du cycle master Innovation responsable et de l option design graphique en cycle bachelor en collaboration avec le Politecnico di Milano (Italie) et Aalto University School of Arts (Finlande). N.B. : Innovation responsable a été séparé en deux programmes distincts en 2015, Sustainable Innovation et Innovation sociale & santé. A DESIGN COMPETITION FOR THE ELDERLY UN CONCOURS DE DESIGN POUR LE GRAND ÂGE Invited by the French Hospital Federation (FHF), the Ministry for the elderly and independent living, and the Caisse nationale de la solidarité pour l autonomie (the French national funding agency for the elderly and handicapped), about twenty students from the Responsible Innovation Master s course worked on stigmatizing conditions for elderly people. The project combined compassionate design and immersion in the field which helped formalize innovations for products identified by carers of the elderly (walking frames, remote alarm systems, tableware, hospital beds, etc.) In May 2013 at the Salons de la santé et de l autonomie (Health & Independence trade shows), five students were awarded prizes by a jury made up of federations, associations, the ministry, the Pays de la Loire Center for Aging, industrialists and specialist designers. Wheelo / Batia BERTHO Invités par la Fédération Hospitalière de France (FHF), le Ministère délégué chargé des personnes âgées et de l autonomie et la Caisse nationale de la solidarité pour l autonomie, une vingtaine d étudiants du cycle master Innovation responsable ont travaillé sur des situations stigmatisantes pour le grand âge. Un projet de «design empathique» et d immersion terrain qui a permis de formaliser des innovations pour des produits identifiés par les accompagnateurs de personnes âgées (déambulateurs, téléalarmes, vaisselle, lits médicalisés). À l occasion des Salons de la santé et de l autonomie de mai 2013, cinq étudiants ont été primés par un jury composé de fédérations, d associations, du ministère délégué, du Gérontopôle de Pays de la Loire, d industriels et de designers spécialisés. 1st Prize, 1 er Prix WHEELO Batia BERTHO 2nd Prize, 2 e Prix BIJOU COMM Raphaël GOUTE 3rd Prize, 3 e Prix ADJUSTO Sola TAKAHASHI Special innovative material prize, Mention spéciale «matériau innovant» BRIO Vincent DERRIEN Special forward-looking innovation prize, Mention spéciale «prospective» QUADRU Paul JUIN Double grip carafe, carafe à double poignée /Audrey MARZIN In September 2014, 9 projects conducted by seven students from the Responsible Innovation MDes program, and two young graduates, were met with great enthusiasm by 70 stakeholders from the Silver Economy market who attended the exhibition at the Maison Régionale de l Autonomie et de la Longévité in Nantes. Taking into account specific needs and expectations of senior citizens, the students came up with solutions to improve the daily life of elderly people. A tool to facilitate intergenerational relationships, exploitation of knowledge, adapted products, a dedicated application: several projects could well be developed thanks to the networking that took place at the exhibition. En septembre 2014, 9 projets réalisés par 7 étudiants du cycle master Innovation responsable, et 2 jeunes diplômés, ont rencontré un franc succès auprès de 70 acteurs du marché de la Silver Économie présents lors de l exposition à la Maison Régionale de l Autonomie et de la Longévité à Nantes. Entre besoins et attentes spécifiques des séniors, les étudiants ont proposé des solutions pour améliorer le quotidien des personnes âgées. 6 CONNECTED ENVIRONMENTS ENVIRONNEMENTS CONNECTÉS A DESIGN-LED RESEARCH CHAIR ON THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF CITIES UNE CHAIRE DE RECHERCHE PAR LE DESIGN SUR LA MUTATION NUMÉRIQUE DES VILLES Design Research Chair on Connected Environments Chaire de recherche par le design Banque Populaire Atlantique - LIPPI EXPERIMENTING ON AN URBAN SCALE L EXPÉRIMENTATION À L ÉCHELLE URBAINE The know-how and knowledge developed in the READi Design Lab and the Sustainable Cities Design Lab, with a design approach focused on the user and sustainable innovation, open up vast prospects for thinking up new services and products in smart cities. Cross-cutting skills for a process of design-led prospective research! L e savoir-faire et les connaissances développés au sein du READi Design Lab et du Ville durable Design Lab, avec une approche de conception centrée sur l usager et l innovation durable, ouvrent des perspectives immenses pour penser de nouveaux services et produits au sein de la «ville intelligente». Des compétences transdisciplinaires pour une démarche de recherche-prospective par le design! The prospective work carried out by the READi Design Lab with Toulouse-based start-up Sigfox on the Internet of Things, and the Sustainable Cities Design Lab on the role of banks with Banque Populaire Atlantique, is being extended. The Banque Populaire Atlantique-LIPPI Chair on Connected Environments is beginning its experimental work with the support of two partners who know all about tomorrow s challenges. Urban-scale experiments on systems for capturing and measuring data in urban areas, based on hypotheses defined by a service design approach, therefore serve as a base for a prospective study of uses related to urban issues (transport, energy, commerce, leisure activities, economic activities, etc.). Operational demonstrators which make it possible to generate new knowledge, both in terms of innovation methodologies and use assessments. This has a real added economic value which should lead to the creation of innovative companies! Prolongement des travaux prospectifs effectués par le READi Design Lab avec la startup toulousaine Sigfox dans le domaine de l internet des Objets et par le Ville durable Design Lab sur le rôle de l agence bancaire avec la Banque Populaire Atlantique, la chaire Environnements connectés Banque Populaire Atlantique - LIPPI entame ses expérimentations avec le soutien de deux partenaires convaincus des enjeux de demain. Le 23 juin 2014, Olivier de Marignan (directeur général de la Banque Populaire Atlantique), Julien Lippi (directeur général de la société LIPPI) et Christian Guellerin (directeur général de L École de design Nantes Atlantique) ont signé au Cluster du Quartier de la création (SAMOA), une convention pour cette première chaire de recherche de l école. Ainsi, des expérimentations à l échelle urbaine autour des systèmes de captation et de mesures dans l espace urbain, à partir d hypothèses d usage définies par une approche de design de service, servent de socle à une prospective d utilisation liée aux enjeux urbains (transports, énergie, commerce, loisirs, activités économiques, etc.). Des démonstrateurs opérationnels qui permettent d entrevoir des connaissances nouvelles, autant en termes de méthodologie d innovation que d évaluations des usages. Une véritable valeur ajoutée économique qui devrait déboucher sur la création d entreprises innovantes! The Banque Populaire Atlantique - LIPPI Chair on Connected Environments is a three-year program enabling to consolidate and expand its expertise on experimental research on capture and measurement systems in urban areas a real source of urban transformation. Hardly a day goes by when the subject of digital technology doesn t come up from an ethical and methodological point of view, thanks to the opportunities offered by generalized data capture. An inescapable turning point in the evolution of our society, this digital revolution is the object of the chair. Its purpose is to share methodologies for designing connected services or spaces, particularly with respect to planning urban or public spaces. Constant monitoring, final degree projects, workshops, specific experiments and publications not only our SMART CITY: CONFERENCE FOR A NEW KIND OF URBAN DESIGN SMART CITY : CONFÉRENCE POUR UN NOUVEAU DESIGN URBAIN founding partners but also many other stakeholders have demonstrated their interest in contributing to this research, such as UTSEUS (Sino-European School of Technology of Shanghai University), Université de Nantes, the Loire-Atlantique Département and the Quartier de la création (the Creative Arts District). La chaire Environnements connectés Banque Populaire Atlantique LIPPI est un programme sur trois ans permettant d affirmer l expertise de sur la recherche expérimentale autour des systèmes de captation et de mesures dans l espace urbain, véritable source de mutation des villes. En janvier 2015, un premier Décryptage info a eu lieu à Nantes. 7 INFORMATION DESIGN DESIGN AT THE SERVICE OF INFORMATION LE DESIGN AU SERVICE DE L INFORMATION 2 The progression in the quantity and diversity of information at our fingertips, particularly since the advent of Web 2.0 and Open Data, calls for methods and tools to help us interpret this information. The Information Design course (part of the Digital Culture MDes programs offered by L École de design Nantes Atlantique) is based on research combining data formatting and design of innovative services. Run by Matthias Rischewski, this program also examines the topics of semiology, modes of interaction (HMI) or data-inspired services by creating graphic, static and dynamic representations, in order to understand and interpret complex phenomena. In other words, how raw data can be transformed into interactive applications which can be used in many different contexts. OPEN DATA DataLab presentation at l'hôtel de Région Pays de la Loire, présentation DataLab à l Hôtel de Région des Pays de la Loire L évolution de la quantité et de la diversité des informations disponibles, notamment par l avènement du Web 2.0 et l ouverture des données numériques, impliquent des méthodes et des outils pour faciliter l interprétation informationnelle. Le programme Information Design du cycle master Culture numérique de L École de design Nantes Atlantique s articule autour de recherches alliant mise en forme des informations et conception de services Once it has been shaped by statistical and graphic processes, Open Data offers a multitude of possibilities for creating innovative services which are tailormade for current information realities. Staff and students from the READi Design Lab have been supporting the open data initiative in the Pays de la Loire region since They regularly take part in events such as the hackathon to transform data sets into services and they have joined forces with the non-profit organisation Libertic to organize a creative session on setting up a datalab which will focus on developing the economic and social value of data and promoting a culture of openness. Piloté par Matthias Rischewski, ce programme aborde également les approches sémiologiques, de modalité d interaction (IHM), ou de conception de services (data-inspired services) en développant des représentations graphiques, statiques et dynamiques, pour la compréhension et l interprétation de phénomènes complexes. Ou comment les données brutes se transforment en applications interactives adaptées à des contextes d usage variés. Une fois façonnée par le biais de traitements statistiques et graphiques, l ouverture des données numériques Open Data offre diverses possibilités de créations de services innovants adaptées aux réalités actuelles de nos modes d information. Encadrants et étudiants du READi Design Lab, accompagnent depuis 2012 l initiative de mise à disposition de données de la Région Pays de la Loire. To ensure a complete learning program, the school has implemented a professional internship policy to make it easier for graduates to find their first job. To make the most of their studies at, students must have a solid understanding of the business world and the fields of design-led innovation appropriate to the company, depending on their interests. Our teaching program allows for progressive immersion in the professional world of creation by offering three internship periods between the second and final year of study. The internship in the first year of the MDes program must be carried out abroad, either in a company or a partner school. This organization is ideal for trying out different types of company (in-house design, agencies, SMEs, etc.) and helps define the best strategic choice for the final internship. This is a very important consideration since over half of our graduates have a job at the end of their studies and, for a large majority (85%), it is thanks to their final internship. The school gives students help and guidance throughout the process and works closely with them in their search for internships. The recruiter should immediately be able to recognize the potential of a student from the organization and layout of their curriculum vitae and portfolio, but also from their professional and creative attitude particularly when first contacting the company. Mission accomplished: the consideration of practical constraints such as the expectations of inhabitants and users, limited space and budget, shared facilities and the organization of space with appropriate furniture, resulted in a design brief for a wider consultation on temporary housing. A three-year win-win partnership in which Nantes Habitat has been exemplary on every front: resource people, shared workshops to produce practical and viable proposals, transition from the creation to a real innovation that can be prototyped on the market. Nantes Habitat, premier bailleur de logements sociaux sur la région nantaise, a lancé un défi de taille aux étudiants de 1 ère année cycle master Mutations du cadre bâti : proposer des logements temporaires adaptés à un contexte de travaux lourds de réhabilitation du patrimoine. Pari tenu, puisque la prise en compte des contraintes réelles telles que les attentes des habitants et des usagers, comme celles de l espace et des coûts, la mutualisation des espaces de services ou encore l organisation de l espace par un mobilier approprié ont permis de définir un cahier des charges pour une consultation plus large autour du logement temporaire. Un partenariat sur trois ans gagnant-gagnant où Nantes Habitat a en tous points été exemplaire : personnes ressources, ateliers partagés pour faire émerger des propositions concrètes et réalisables, passage de la création à une innovation véritable et prototypable sur le marché. 3 DRIVING INNOVATION PROVOQUER L INNOVATION PENHOËT TRAIN STATION: DESIGN AT THE SERVICE OF PUBLIC POLICY GARE DE PENHOËT : LE DESIGN AU SERVICE DES POLITIQUES PUBLIQUES In the last few years, design has gone far beyond the scope of industrial creation to become a discipline which facilitates discussion with citizens about public projects. Thus, Carole Garry, Head of the Citizens Rail program in the Pays de la Loire region, approached L École de design Nantes Atlantique to ask for its involvement in a project where design is a mediator between a local authority and the citizens. Eighteen 3rd year undergraduate students in Spatial Design (supervised by Lydie Morand and David Comy) worked on the project and came up with nine concepts for the rehabilitation of Penhoët train Penhoët / Sylvain TOLDO & Antoine LEMESLE station in Saint-Nazaire. The station has become an example of design at the service of public policy. In the spring of 2013, this joint project with RFF, Gares et Connexions- SNCF and the Pays de la Loire region gave rise to a meeting involving all the project stakeholders. In the course of this meeting, the feedback from the public consultation was analyzed and one of the proposed concepts was selected. Sylvain Toldo and Antoine Lemesle, the students behind the successful project, were able to monitor the project s progress and explain their intentions regarding the concept to all the stakeholders. Depuis quelques années, le design a largement dépassé le périmètre de la création industrielle pour devenir une discipline qui permet de dialoguer avec les citoyens sur des projets publics. Ainsi Carole Garry, en charge du programme Citizens Rail à la Région Pays de la Loire, est venue solliciter L École de design Nantes Atlantique pour l impliquer dans un processus de projet où le design est un médiateur entre une collectivité et les citoyens. La gare de Penhoët à Saint-Nazaire, où 18 étudiants de 3 e année du cycle bachelor design d espace (encadrés par Lydie Morand et David Comy) sont intervenus pour proposer neuf concepts de réhabilitation de la gare, est devenue un exemple de design au service des politiques publiques. Cette collaboration avec RFF, Gares et Connexions-SNCF et la Région Pays de la Loire a donné lieu au cours du printemps 2013 à une réunion associant toutes les parties prenantes du projet et a permis de tenir compte des retours de la consultation publique et d opérer un choix autour d un des concepts proposés. DESSiiN PROTOTYPING TOMORROW S SERVICE-OBJECTS PROTOTYPER LES «OBJETS-SERVICES» DE DEMAIN T he separation between engineering and design at L École de design Nantes Atlantique will soon be a thing of the past and the result is a diploma dedicated to connected objects: the DESSiiN diploma. The goal is to achieve cross-disciplinarity, encourage entrepreneurship and promote future innovation! L approche de décloisonnement entre ingénierie et design de L École de design Nantes Atlantique donne naissance à un diplôme dédié aux objets connectés : le D.U. DESSiiN. Une ambition de transdisciplinarité à vocation entrepreneuriale porteuse pour l innovation future! Since September 2014, student designers and engineers have been working together on the university diploma DESSiiN (DESign of Innovative Interactive Services: Communicating Objects & Tangible Interfaces), co-organized by L École de design Nantes Atlantique, Télécom Bretagne and l Université de Nantes (Polytech Nantes and IEMN-IAE). Cross-disciplinary teams are working to develop new connected objects, prior to the creation of the future university complex which is due to open in 2017 in the Quartier de la Création (Nantes). Skills in design, IT, electronics and telecommunications are combined in design projects for connected objects/services. With a project-based pedagogical approach designed to promote entrepreneurship, teaching is built around three dimensions: use (taking into account societal and anthropological matters), design and management, based on cooperation between designers and engineers and the technology to exploit the opportunities offered in the field of human-machine interactions. Open to students from the three co-founding establishments, the course uses the cross-fertilization of skills to anticipate tomorrow s innovative services and build on the potential of connected objects. DIGITAL CULTURE: CULTURE NUMERIQUE : NANTES DIGITAL WEEK Nantes confirms its status as a digital city with Nantes Digital Week (12-21 September 2014) which combines a series of events organized around the international scientific colloquium Digital Intelligence and the modern music festival Scopitone. The school, a partner of Digital Intelligence, is an active participant through the activities of its READi Design Lab and the design-led research chair on Connected Environments with Banque Populaire Atlantique and LIPPI. A workshop was organized to unite the future students of DESSiiN diploma, designers and engineers, who spent two days designing and formalizing their first prospective project on connected objects, using experimental and creative research in interaction design. Competitions, awards, trade fairs The students have demonstrated in many ways the significance of their field of exploration. We take a look back at a few success stories. The success of our students at food design events demonstrates the innovation and open-mindedness of the school s pedagogy. At Ecotrophelia, the student awards for food innovation which took place in July 2014, two projects co-designed by students from the school and from Oniris (School of Veterinary Medicine, Food Science and Engineering) won four of the eight prizes awarded. Previously in 2013, seven teams of students from the New Eating Habits Design Lab took part in the European competition Grandma s Design. Faced with the challenge of combining heritage, cultural identities, food and innovation in their creation, two teams were honored. In 2014, the International Class joined forces with the Centre Culinaire Contemporain (Contemporary Culinary Center) in Rennes as part of the Moke up project which consists in developing a design project in vivo. The school also participates in trade fairs for food professionals. Nine student projects based on themes specific to Nantes and incorporating identity, food production and presentation were presented to the public at Serbotel (Nantes, 2013) to showcase how design can respond to the problems faced by restaurateurs. Grandma's Design competition, concours Grandma's Design (2013) Les réussites de nos étudiants lors de manifestations en relation avec le design alimentaire démontrent les dimensions d innovation et d ouverture de la pédagogie de l école. Lors des Trophées étudiants de l innovation alimentaire Ecotrophelia en juillet 2014, deux projets co-conçus par des étudiants de l école et d Oniris, l école vétérinaire agroalimentaire et de l alimentation, ont remporté quatre prix sur les huit distribués. Précédemment, en 2013, sept équipes d étudiants associés au Design Lab Nouvelles Pratiques Alimentaires ont participé au concours européen Grandma s Design. Invitées à associer patrimoine, identités culturelles, alimentation et innovation dans leur création, deux équipes ont été honorées. En 2014, la Classe internationale collabore avec le Centre Culinaire Contemporain de Rennes dans le cadre du projet Moke up dont le principe consiste à développer un projet de design In vivo. L école participe également à des salons orientés «métiers de bouche». Neuf projets d étudiants basés sur une spécificité nantaise combinant identité, travail de l aliment et mode de présentation ont été ainsi présentés au public à Serbotel (Nantes, 2013) pour illustrer la façon dont le design répond aux problématiques des restaurateurs. SURVIVAL 6 PROJECTS ON SHOW SURVIVAL, 6 PROJETS EXPOSÉS At the 53rd Milan Design Week in April 2014, 34 of the school s promising undergraduate students in Product Design showed off six creations on the theme of Survivalˮ to professionals and the general public at the Satellite exhibition. Alain Le Quernec has been running workshops in the school for the graphic design program since 2010 L École de design Nantes Atlantique invite de manière récurrente des personnalités reconnues pour leur savoir-faire afin d apporter une perception différente de leur métier aux étudiants. Depuis 2010, Alain Le Quernec anime des workshops au sein de l école pour l option design graphique A SUBJECT, A POSTER UN THÈME, UNE AFFICHE International poster artist Alain Le Quernec is well-known for being a committed graphic designer. His posters make an impression on the spectator, stir our consciences and remain inscribed in our memories. On each occasion, Le Quernec chooses a powerful theme that is the pretext for designing posters which convey a meaningful message and above all constitute visual responses. In 2013, the theme explored was the right to housing, in 2014 it was war and in 2015, terrorism. Each year, the students proposals are responsible, thought-provoking, humorous, positive or nihilistic but they all illustrate content which is appropriate to the substance and form of the message being conveyed. À chaque session, Le Quernec sélectionne un thème fort, prétexte à concevoir des affiches qui font sens et doivent être avant tout une proposition visuelle. Chaque année, les propositions des étudiants sont sérieuses, provocatrices, humoristiques, positives ou nihilistes mais illustrent un contenu en adéquation entre le fond et la forme du message à transmettre. The Nantes-based association PiNG explores digital practices, re-appropriates technology and brings together an eclectic public whilst defending the values of free culture. In 2013, the first workshop was organized in partnership with Meccano who provided each team of students with a box set from their range as a starting point for their creations; the interactive part was based on Arduino technology, a programmable Open Source electronic card. FoxDesign agency ensured the consistency of the products. In 2014, PiNG repeated the experience with students from interaction design on the theme of environmental capture. The projects were showcased at Festival D (D for DIY) on 31 May and 1 June 2014 at le lieu unique in Nantes. SKETCHING & ROUGH DRAFT SEMINAR SÉMINAIRE SKETCH & ROUGH L association nantaise PiNG explore les pratiques numériques, invite à la réappropriation des technologies et cultive le croisement des publics tout en défendant les valeurs de la culture libre. Claire d Achon (2010 alumni), transport designer at Iveco and Augustin Boisleux, transport designer at Alstom, trained the students for one week in the skills of sketching and rough drafts. The theme of vehicles used to explore the techniques enabled them to put theory into practice. The seminar looked at the different graphic codes needed to communicate about the project with the construction of volumes, the notion of perspectives, and how to master the effects of light, shine and shade. Pour la première fois en 2013, une semaine entière fut dédiée au dessin assisté par ordinateur pour les élèves de 2 e année produit. Claire d Achon (alumni 2010), designer transport chez Iveco et Augustin Boisleux, designer transport chez Alstom, ont ainsi formé les étudiants pendant une semaine à Sketch et au Rough. La thématique explorée des véhicules leur a permis de passer de l expression à la forme. The partnerships set up by the school are the perfect opportunity to put it in practice Q ue ce soit pour le BTS Design d espace, la Classe internationale ou en cycle master Ville durable, passer de la théorie à la pratique en scénographie est indispensable. Les partenariats mis en place par l école permettent cette mise en pratique FROM BEHIND THE SCENES TO CENTER STAGE DES COULISSES À LA SCÈNE In January 2014, students from the International Class took part in a workshop run by the designer Jules Charbonnet, in partnership with the Nantes-based concert venue Trempolino. The result: a stage set for the concert of a Madagascan group called K Bossi inspired by motifs and techniques borrowed from the musicians traditional culture; a combination of functional and portable set elements to create video projections. LA VIE EN PARTICULES As part of the Festival Assis! Debout! Couché! (Seated! Standing! Lying down!), organized by the lieu unique in February 2014, the designer Matali Crasset was invited to design the scenographic installations for 3 evenings of concerts together with students from the Sustainable Cities MDes program. They played a part in creating the scenographic concept La Vie En Particules : a system combining furniture and decoration designed to occupy the space, create a story and bring additional light. WORD FOR WORD... For the last few years, the American theatre company Word for Word, based in San Francisco, has entrusted the scenography of its new plays to apprentices of the advanced vocational diploma in Spatial Design. Spencer Evans, the company s set designer, came to help the students with their research. In 2013, the final set design for the play You know when the men are gone was inspired by these sessions. En janvier 2014, des étudiants de la Classe internationale ont participé à un workshop animé par le designer Jules Charbonnet, en partenariat avec la salle de spectacle nantaise Trempolino. Le résultat : une scénographie pour le concert du groupe malgache, K Bossi, inspirée de motifs et process issus de la culture traditionnelle des musiciens ; un ensemble d éléments de décors fonctionnels et transportables pour réaliser des projections vidéos. Workshop La Vie en Particules (2014) / Matali Crasset Dans le cadre du Festival Assis! Debout! Couché! organisé par le lieu unique en février 2014, la designer Matali Crasset a été invitée à concevoir une scénographie pour trois soirées de concerts avec les étudiants du cycle master Ville durable. Ils ont pu participé à l élaboration du concept scénographique «La Vie En Particules» : un système associant mobilier et décoration pour investir l espace, le mettre en scène et créer une ambiance lumineuse. La compagnie de théâtre américaine Word for Word, basée à San Franscisco, confie depuis quelques années un projet d étude de scénographie de ses nouvelles pièces aux apprentis du BTS Design d espace. Spencer Evans, scénographe de la compagnie, est venu accompagner les étudiants dans leurs recherches. En 2013, le spectacle You know when the men are gone trouva sa mise en espace finale sur les propositions inspirées de ces échanges. 5 PRODUCING KNOWLEDGE PRODUIRE DE LA CONNAISSANCE Formalizing the knowledge gained from projects and research activities is essential for demonstrating expertise. The publication of articles in research reviews, contributions to conferences and the production of general interest works all fuel the evolution of design activities. Formaliser la connaissance acquise dans les projets et les activités de recherche est une nécessité pour prouver son expertise. 15 DESIGN FORMS FORMES DE DESIGN PROFESSIONS The pioneers of industrial design in the last century were already defining their scope as ranging from the teaspoon to the city. In those days the credo was one of utilitarian beauty : art for everyone and as part of everyday life. Art applied to industry was supposed to humanize all things technical and the alliance of the three was to determine the different forms of modernity for a better world. Industrial design, which was born of applied arts [ ], spread to all industrialized countries in the 1950s, embracing disciplines borrowed from the humanities and marketing. In professional spheres, the term design was long associated with industrial design and the idea that the latter encapsulated all the different design fields. As an activity that involves conception, projection and projects, it relates to other professions which also developed their methods and theories in the context of industrial development. The word design preceded by a qualifier ( design) thus replaces, or co-exists with the former names for the professions (illustrator or typographer, decorator, interior designer, etc.) In the last thirty years we have seen the emergence of new domains, such as interaction design, design for all or service design. [ ] Some of these new domains were born with the development of IT and its extension to objects and spaces in the physical world. All the problematics offering new modes of interaction which are as close as possible to users experience are at stake. Simultaneously, a movement of user-centered design has emerged which, although not new in itself, takes a special place due to its use of iterative processes of analysis, design and assessment. [ ] While service design may be linked to digital technology, its scope is not confined only to digital. Service design which supports social innovation, such as that defended by Italian designer Ezio Manzini also takes its roots in a trend that questioned the economic model of the 30-year boom period following the Second World War and gave birth to the concept of sustainable development in the eighties. Users and multi-disciplinary teams are united around collective projects centered on various societal and environmental issues such as transport, food, habitat, energy consumption, etc. [ ] A DISCIPLINE Today, the terms design thinking and co-design are generally used to talk about all the approaches and methodologies which give rise to a form of collective creativity which allows designers from different professions, users and staff from companies and authorities to collectively think up innovative projects and services. [ ] Tim Brown s book, the international influence of IDEO (created in Palo Alto in 1991) and the teachings of Stanford s D School have all contributed significantly to the promotion of this approach defined as an innovation strategy based on the triad of desirability-feasibility-viability and focusing on the individual. [ ] DESIGN AND PUBLIC SERVICE The different forms of design outlined above highlight a change wherein creative potential and the ability to unify teams place this discipline at the heart of the issues of an innovative service policy in local authorities. [ ] In this field, as in any sector in which design has a role to play, it is important to consider its involvement in the long term. It is not just a question of learning methods and tools which would provide the magic formulae to the questions asked, as a simplistic approach to design thinking might suggest. For each specific situation we must consider the context and work towards achieving a field-based design doing. The specific skills of designers from their respective professions must be combined with those of the other stakeholders involved in order to give meaning to the projects undertaken and to contribute to their realization. À cette époque, le credo était celui de la «beauté utile», de l'art pour tous et dans le quotidien. L'art appliqué à l'industrie devait permettre d'«humaniser la technique» et l'alliance des trois déterminer les différentes formes de la modernité pour un monde meilleur. Le design industriel issu des arts appliqués [ ] s'est étendu à tous les pays industrialisés dans les années 1950, en intégrant les disciplines issues des sciences humaines et du marketing. Dans les milieux professionnels, le terme design a longtemps été équivalent à design industriel avec l'idée que celui-ci finalement recouvrait tous les champs du design. En tant qu'activité de conception, de projection, de projet, il renvoie cependant à d'autres métiers qui ont également développé leurs méthodes et théories dans le contexte du développement industriel. Le mot avec un qualificatif, design de, remplace donc, ou côtoie les anciennes dénominations de métier (graphiste, décorateur, architecte d'intérieur ). Les trente dernières années ont vu émerger de nouveaux territoires, tels que le design d'interactivité, le design pour tous ou le design de service. [ ] Certains de ces nouveaux territoires sont nés avec le développement de l'informatique et son extension aux objets et aux espaces dans le monde physique. Sont en jeu toutes les problématiques offrant «de nouvelles modalités d'interaction, au plus près des expériences concrètes de l'utilisateur». Parallèlement en effet a émergé un courant user-centered design qui, s'il n'est pas nouveau en soi, occupe une place particulière par la mise en œuvre de processus itératifs d'analyse, de conception et d'évaluation. [ ] Si le design de service peut être rattaché au numérique, son territoire n'y est pas limité. Un design de service porteur d'innovation sociale, tel que le défend le designer italien Ezio Manzini prend ses racines également dans un courant remettant en cause le modèle économique des Trente Glorieuses et qui a fait émerger le concept de «développement durable» dans les années Des usagers et des d'équipes pluridisciplinaires se rassemblent autour de projets associatifs orientés sur des problématiques sociétales et environnementales diverses telles que le transport, la nourriture, l'habitat, la consommation d'énergie. [ ] UNE DISCIPLINE Actuellement, les termes de design thinking et de co-design sont généralement utilisés pour désigner ces démarches et méthodes permettant de faire émerger une forme de créativité collective associant des designers de différents métiers, des usagers et des personnels d'entreprises et de collectivités pour penser des projets et services innovants. [ ] Le livre de Tim Brown, le rayonnement international d'ideo (créée à Palo Alto en 1991) et les enseignements de la D School de Stanford ont largement contribué à promouvoir cette démarche définie comme une stratégie d'innovation basée sur la triade «désirabilité-faisabilitéviabilité» et centrée sur l'humain. [ ] DESIGN ET SERVICE PUBLIC Les différentes formes de design esquissées ci-dessus mettent en avant une évolution où le potentiel créatif et la capacité à fédérer des équipes placent cette discipline au cœur des enjeux d'une politique innovante de service au sein des collectivités territoriales. [ ] Dans ce domaine, comme dans tous les secteurs où le design a un rôle à jouer, il est important d'envisager son implantation dans la durée. Il ne s'agit pas de l'apprentissage de méthodes et d'outils qui apporteraient les bonnes recettes aux questions posées comme pourrait le laisser supposer une approche réductrice du design thinking. Il faut prendre en considération des contextes à chaque fois spécifiques et œuvrer pour un design doing implanté sur le terrain. Les compétences spécifiques des designers dans leurs métiers respectifs doivent être partagées avec celles des autres acteurs impliqués pour donner sens aux projets engagés et contribuer à leur réalisation. INTERNATIONAL CLASS LA CLASSE INTERNATIONALE In 2012/2013, 59 French and foreign students joined the school s international class. Fifteen different nationalities worked side by side, forming a tremendous multicultural learning environment. In September 2014, 19 European students from the Erasmus program and 16 students from other continents made up the international section. They were divided into three groups and each of them had to carry out an industrial project. The Industrial products group (for students in industrial design) worked on a project for a new high-end washing machine in partnership with Indesit, the Brand Design group (for students in graphic design, product design or visual communication) was in charge of doing the branding for a range of metal fencing for Vendôme and the Global Design group (for students in spatial, product or interior design) looked at the design of bedroom furnishings for French company Resistub. In June 2014, the school got the go-ahead for the European exchange program Erasmus+ which has now been extended to include new zones such as Russia, Africa, Asia and Latin America to facilitate intercultural exchanges for our students. À la rentrée 2014, ce sont 19 étudiants européens du programme Erasmus et 16 autres venant d autres continents qui forment la section internationale. Divisé en trois groupes, chacun a dû s investir dans un projet industriel. Le groupe Industrial Products (pour les étudiants en design industriel) a travaillé sur un projet de nouvelle machine à laver haut de gamme en partenariat avec Indesit, le groupe Brand Design (pour les étudiants en design graphique, produit ou communication visuelle) a eu en charge le branding d une gamme de clôtures en métal pour Vendôme et le groupe Global Design (pour les étudiants en design d espace, produit ou intérieur) s'est penché sur le design de systèmes d ameublement de chambres pour l entreprise Resistub. L école a reçu le feu vert en juin 2014 pour le programme d'échange européen Erasmus+ maintenant élargi à de nouvelles zones comme la Russie, l Afrique, l Asie ou encore l Amérique Latine pour favoriser les échanges interculturels de nos étudiants. In September 2010, signed a partnership with Shanghai University and by November the China Studio had already been launched. Le programme de cycle master Design & Interculturalité a vu le jour à Qingdao (Shandong) en septembre 2008, avec le soutien de la Région des Pays de la Loire. Pour la cinquième année de collaboration avec l Université de Shanghai, l'événement China Studio #5 a été organisé en partenariat avec L Agence internationale Nantes Saint-Nazaire pour rassembler, étudiants, anciens du China Studio et professionnels du design et de l innovation urbaine en présence d'une délégation officielle nantaise. After spending four months at l Université de Nantes on an intensive French language training course, these students then benefit from a program which consolidates their skills in design, methodology and creativity. A comprehensive course which helps students to cope with their cultural immersion in a French school! 18 COOPERATION PROJECTS IN SHANGHAI! DES COOPÉRATIONS À SHANGHAI! In March 2014, 19 students from the College of Advertising and Design (CAD) in Brussels took part in a visit + workshop" program laid on by the China Studio. The workshop brought together 60 students of 3 nationalities and from 8 different specialties. It was an intense and challenging project which aimed to observe and analyze a district of Shanghai and subsequently imagine it in 20 years time. With the help of 4 professionals of 4 different nationalities and sectors, the students came up with creative ideas for interaction within the local population. In January 2014, the China Studio also organized the first SHS Café (Humanities and Social Sciences) with the Alliance Française in Shanghai. It consisted of a cycle of conferences organized in partnership with the Sino- European School of Technology of Shanghai University (UTSEUS) that took place once a month throughout En mars 2014, 19 étudiants du College of Advertising and Design (CAD) de Bruxelles ont participé à un programme «visite + workshop» proposé par le China Studio. Le China Studio a également organisé en janvier 2014 le premier Café SHS (Sciences humaines et sociales) avec l Alliance Française de Shanghai, cycle de conférences organisé en partenariat avec l Université Sino-Européenne de Technologie de Shanghai (UTSEUS) et décliné à raison d une fois par mois sur l année STUDY TRIP TO WINDESHEIM VOYAGE D ÉTUDES À WINDESHEIM For 2nd year BTS students, going abroad for a study trip is an important educational part of their training. The school therefore joined the Carrousel project whose aim is to create ties between different European design schools. In 2013, our apprentices in product design went to Zwolle in the Netherlands for a week of shared practical exercises at the Windesheim School of Engineering and Design. Amongst other things, the Franco-Dutch teams spent three days working on a project to design men s skincare products. The young designers presented their project to three managers from Philips who admired the quality of analysis and creativity demonstrated by the apprentices. Pour les 2 e année de BTS, partir à l étranger dans le cadre d un voyage d étude participe au projet pédagogique de leur formation. L école a donc rejoint le projet Carrousel dont l objectif est de créer du lien entre différentes écoles de design européennes. En 2013, nos apprentis en design produit sont partis à Zwolle aux Pays-Bas pour une semaine d échanges et de pratiques au sein de la Windesheim School of Engineering and Design. Parmi les travaux réalisés sur place, les équipes francohollandaises ont planché durant trois jours sur un projet de design de soins pour homme. Les jeunes designers ont présenté leur projet à trois responsables de la société Philips qui ont apprécié la qualité d analyse et la créativité dont les apprentis ont fait preuve. L'ÉCOLE DE DESIGN MOVES TO DELHI L'ÉCOLE DE DESIGN S'INSTALLE À DELHI TANGO PROJECT PROJET TANGO Tango Exhibition, exposition Tango / Nantes, 2013 Established in India since 2010, L'École de design Nantes Atlantique signed a protocol agreement with The Design Village in June 2014 to set up a design school in Delhi and to transfer its Transcultural Design Master s program, previously based in Bangalore. Led by the architecture firm Archohm, the institution is based on the Research Training Business model with a major emphasis on socio-economic issues. The Design Village, 2015 L École de design will help set up Bachelor s programs within The Design Village for Indian students. Présente en Inde depuis 2010, a signé en juin 2014 un protocole d accord avec The Design Village pour la création d une école à Delhi et y transférer le programme de cycle master Design & Interculturalité préalablement installé à Bangalore. Piloté par l agence d architecture Archohm, l établissement s'est axé sur le modèle «recherche formation entreprise» avec une forte dimension socio-économique. L École de design va par ailleurs contribuer à la création de programmes bachelor destinés à des étudiants indiens au sein de The Design Village. Solidarity, exchange and knowledge transmission between generations are all potential sources of social innovation and sustainable solutions for our ageing European societies. So three European schools, Aalto University (Finland), Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and L École de design Nantes Atlantique teamed up to get their students working together with a pragmatic fieldbased approach. An in situ operation in a district of Helsinki, innovative services co-designed with the inhabitants of Milan and a closer look at the everyday lives of elderly residents in Nantes were all opportunities to implement this approach and compare viewpoints. The result of this work was presented in a series of thematic exhibits organized successively in the three cities. La solidarité, l échange et la transmission de connaissances entre les générations sont autant de sources potentielles d innovation sociale et de solutions durables pour nos sociétés européennes vieillissantes. Trois écoles européennes, Aalto University (Finlande), le Politecnico di Milano (Italie) et se sont donc associées pour faire travailler leurs étudiants avec une approche de terrain pragmatique. Intervention in-situ dans un quartier à Helsinki, services innovants co-conçus avec les habitants à Milan, expérimentation du vécu des personnes âgées à Nantes ont été autant de mises en œuvre et de confrontation. Being able to transform ideas into viable and attractive products and services and becoming entrepreneur of your own project requires a strategic overview - a principle which is at the heart of the school curriculum. Au delà de la production de concepts originaux, le designer doit savoir faire preuve de compétences managériales dans son activité professionnelle. Savoir transformer les idées en produits et services viables et attractifs et devenir entrepreneur de son propre projet requiert une vision stratégique qui est au cœur des cursus de l'école. In its quest to ensure the future success of its students, L École de design Nantes Atlantique has a specific team to develop the entrepreneurial spirit of its young designers and has set up several partnerships with business incubators. L École de design Nantes Atlantique, soucieuse de la réussite de ses étudiants, dispose d une équipe spécifique pour développer la fibre entrepreneuriale de ses jeunes designers et a mis en place plusieurs partenariats avec des incubateurs. The school encourages students and graduates to become entrepreneurs by providing the necessary assistance to incubate their projects. The Internship and Business Relations Cluster helps MDes students with a program of professionalization with regular conferences and meetings organized during the year. The students are also encouraged to participate in the Entrepreneuriales, an educational Learning by Doing competition that teaches students how to set up their own company. The aim is to develop students entrepreneurial spirit and to encourage them to be proactive in their professional project. The connections with Atlanpole, the regional incubator of Pays de la Loire, or the incubator at l École des Mines in Nantes, also offer opportunities for start-ups put forward by students or young graduates, who benefit from help and guidance from the formalization stage right up to the economic, legal and financial development of their project. Finally, the double diploma with the Institute of Economics and Business Administration of Nantes-IAE which combines a Master s in design with a Master s in business administration also offers interesting entrepreneurial opportunities. L école encourage étudiants et diplômés à entreprendre en mettant en place des dispositifs d accompagnement pour l incubation de leurs projets. Le pôle Stages et insertion professionnelle accompagne les étudiants de cycle master avec un programme de professionnalisation où conférences et rencontres ponctuent l année. Les étudiants sont également incités à participer aux Entrepreneuriales, parcours pédagogique «Learning by Doing» pour apprendre à créer leur structure en étant étudiant. L objectif : développer la fibre entrepreneuriale des étudiants et être pro-actif pour leur projet professionnel. Le lien avec Atlanpole, l incubateur régional des Pays de la Loire, ou l'incubateur de l École des Mines de Nantes offre également des possibilités pour l émergence de startups portées par les étudiants ou les jeunes diplômés, qui bénéficient ainsi d un accompagnement, de la formalisation jusqu au développement économique, juridique et financier de leur projet. This has led to the creation of several structures including Atelier Iceberg, led by Thomas Busson and Thomas Dupeyrat. Interview. Plusieurs structures ont ainsi vu le jour dont l Atelier Iceberg, piloté par Thomas Busson et Thomas Dupeyrat. Rencontre. What is your activity? Thomas BUSSON TB & TD: Our company is specialized in information visualization and training on information-mapping. What were the catalysts for setting up your own activity? TB & TD: We realized that companies didn t know what to do with their data. We therefore started to develop a solution during an internship, building on the expertise of Franck Ghitalla (lecturer, researcher and French specialist in the field of network sciences) and Léo Bonnargent (developer). We presented an initial version of the interface at an event at the Nantes Events Center. The positive reaction we met with gave us the confidence to set up our company. Did you already have this entrepreneurial spirit as students? TB & TD: Both of us took part in the Entrepreneuriales ( Coup de Cœur award for Thomas Busson and 1st Prize for Thomas Dupeyrat). What help and guidance were you given in this creation process? TB & TD: We were incubated by l École des Mines de Nantes with the cooperation of L École de design. This assistance meant we had premises free of charge. As for the rest, we decided to do our first year without any financial help. Quelle est votre activité? Thomas DUPEYRAT T.B. & T.D. : Notre société est spécialisée dans la visualisation de l information et la formation à la cartographie de l information. Quels ont été les éléments déclencheurs pour créer votre propre activité? T.B. & T.D. : Nous avons pu constater que les entreprises ne savaient pas quoi faire de leurs données. Nous avons alors commencé à développer une solution lors d'un stage en nous appuyant sur l'expertise de Franck Ghitalla, enseignant chercheur et spécialiste français dans le domaine des sciences des réseaux et de Léo Bonnargent, développeur. Nous avons présenté un début d interface lors d un événement à la Cité Nantes Events Center. L intérêt rencontré nous a rassuré pour créer l'entreprise. Est-ce que vous aviez déjà cette fibre entrepreneuriale en étant étudiant? T.B. & T.D. : Nous avions tous les deux participé aux Entrepreneuriales (prix Coup de Cœur pour Thomas Busson et 1 er Prix pour Thomas Dupeyrat). Comment avez-vous été accompagnés dans cette démarche de création? T.B. & T.D. : Nous avons été incubé par l École des Mines de Nantes en collaboration avec L École de design. THE INDUSTRIAL BREAKTHROUGH EVENTS LES RENDEZ-VOUS DE LA RUPTURE INDUSTRIELLE Creating unique products, imagining unexpected uses and improving user experience are all opportunities that design can offer companies looking for ways to innovate. An event was organized in 2014 in partnership with Nantes/Saint-Nazaire CCI. Ten Master s students specializing in digital culture presented their projects to industrialists in the Loire region. The event was the opportunity for discussions and sharing on the vision of tomorrow s market, questioning company strategy, the presentation of atypical and varied projects incorporating the innovative INTERNATIONAL CLASS: A MANAGERIAL DIMENSION CLASSE INTERNATIONALE : UNE DIMENSION MANAGÉRIALE dimension through design: companies and students alike were enchanted and possibilities for new relationships were numerous. Créer des produits singuliers, imaginer des usages inhabituels ou encore améliorer l expérience utilisateur sont autant d'opportunités offertes par le design pour des entreprises en quête d innovation. En partenariat avec la CCI Nantes Saint-Nazaire, un premier événement a été organisé en Une dizaine d étudiants de cycle master spécialisés en culture numérique ont présenté leurs projets aux industriels ligériens. Échange et partage sur la vision du marché de demain, questionnement de la stratégie d entreprise, présentation de projets atypiques et variés intégrant la dimension innovante par le design, ce rendez-vous a ouvert le champ à de nouvelles rencontres, tant la satisfaction fut réelle pour les entreprises comme les étudiants. Workshop Ki et La / 2014 Since 2013, the International Class has been fine-tuning its options to consolidate its managerial dimension. This new organization addresses brand issues at different scales and levels of complexity, and uses design to ensure the coherence and readability of branding. The students are involved in the company s design-led innovation strategy in the early stages of the project and are mobilized on analyzing the positioning of the brand in a highly competitive market. Students acquire the project management methods and tools necessary to assert their capacity for innovation and develop their teamworking skills. Depuis l année 2013, la Classe Internationale a fait évoluer ses options afin d affirmer sa dimension managériale. Cette nouvelle organisation permet d aborder à différentes échelles et niveaux de complexités les problématiques de marque en mettant le design au service de sa cohérence et de sa lisibilité. Les étudiants sont impliqués dans la stratégie d innovation par le design de l entreprise en amont du projet et mobilisés sur l analyse du positionnement de la marque dans un univers concurrentiel.
