La préposition (à), the book, page 11 + 26 + 34: It has different forms when it becomes contracted with the definite articles : à - au (à + le) - à la - à l' - aux (à + les) It is used in many ways & different meanings : With masculine (singular or plural) countries ( = in) : au Japon / aux États-Unis. With cities ( = in) : à Paris, à Djeddah When talking about countries or cities, (à) can be used after these verbs : habiter, être, aller, rester, arriver.. just like (en)! After the verb (Aller à = to go to) : Je vais au cinéma / Nous allons à la mer After the verb (Arriver à = arrive in/at) : J'arrive à l'opéra Before saying the hour ( = at) : la leçon commence à 8 h 30. 3. How to know which preposition to use : à or de, and in which form? Follow these steps : a. Look at the verb : Aller (à) should be used. Faire (de) should be used. Arriver Both (à) & (de) can be used but the meaning will be different. b. Look at the end of the word, if it has an (s), which means it is in the plural, then you will choose either (aux) or (des).. depending on what you did in the first step. c. If the word is singular, see if it starts with a vowel or (h) in which case you will use (à l') or ( de l') d. If the word is neither plural nor starts with a vowel or (h), then decide if it's masculine ( au / du ) or feminine ( à la / de la ) to finally find the correct answer. 4. La préposition (chez), the book, page 26 : Used when talking about people & can be used after the following verbs : habiter, être, aller, rester, arriver: Elle va chez Nicolas / La professeure. Le féminin : There are different rules to make the feminine form of an adjective, a profession or a nationality: a. The general rule is to add an (e) at the end of the word : étudiant étudiante b. If the word ends already with an (e), we add nothing : jeune jeune c. If the word ends with ( -ien), we add (ne) : mécanicien mécanicienne d.
