3 introduction Rowing will join Paralympic Games in Beijing by José Nunes At the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing (6 to 17 September), the first Paralympic rowers in history will be introduced to the world sport community. Last April, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) voted to include rowing into the 2008 Paralympic Games programme. Rowing was the only new sport to join the 19 existing summer Paralympic sports. Up until now, the majority of Paralympic sports have been classified by disability rather than by sport. The International Rowing Federation (FISA) is one of the first international sports federations to fully develop an «adapted» practice into its sport, the term «adaptive» implying that minimal adaptations are introduced into the equipment, rules and events based on how the different disability types impact rowing. This is why FISA refers to rowing for people with disabilities as «adaptive rowing». FISA introduced adaptive rowing three years ago at the 2002 World Rowing Championships in Seville, Spain. Since then, the World Rowing Championships have witnessed an increase in participation and performance level. Promoting the universality of rowing, about 30 countries from 5 continents will qualify for the 2008 Paralympic Games at the World Rowing Championships in 2007 and the Paralympic Qualification Regatta in The competition system in Beijing will be simple: 4 events, 3 days of competition and 2 finals (A and B). The boat classes will be easy to understand by the public and the media: mixed gender four (sliding seat), a mixed gender double (fixed seat), a male and a female single event (fixed seat with pontoons). With broadcasting and media support, the excitement of rowing will be communicated worldwide. Rowing as a Paralympic sport will boost the development of rowing in many countries in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and South and Central America where governments prioritize the funding of Paralympic sports. Rowing is now an Olympic and Paralympic sport. Long before rowing attained this status, adaptive rowers made the commitment to challenge their limitations and attain top-level performance. Their motivation combined with the efforts of National Federations, rowing clubs, world championship organising committees as well as FISA staff and consultants, have made this venture successful. C est pourquoi l aviron pour handicapés est considéré par la FISA comme de l aviron adapté. La FISA a introduit l aviron adapté il y a trois ans aux Championnats du monde 2002 à Séville, en Espagne. Depuis lors, les Championnats du monde d aviron ont connu une augmentation du nombre de participants et du niveau de performance. Trente pays des cinq continents, assurant ainsi la promotion de l universalité de l aviron, se qualifieront pour les Jeux Paralympiques de 2008 aux Championnats du monde d aviron en 2007 et à la Régate de qualification paralympique en A Beijing, le système de compétition sera simple: 4 épreuves, 3 jours de compétition et 2 finales (A et B). Les classes de bateaux seront faciles à comprendre pour le public et les médias: un quatre mixte (sièges coulissants), un double mixte (sièges fixes), une épreuve skiff homme et une épreuve skiff femme (sièges fixes avec embarcadères). Avec le soutien de la retransmission et des médias, l enthousiasme pour l aviron se transmettra au monde entier. En devenant sport paralympique, l aviron va prendre un nouvel essor dans de nombreux pays en Europe de l Est, Asie, Afrique et Amérique centrale et du sud où les gouvernements font du financement des sports paralympiques une priorité. L aviron est donc désormais un sport olympique et paralympique. Mais longtemps déjà, avant que l aviron ne parvienne à ce statut, les adeptes d aviron adapté s étaient engagés à dépasser leurs limites et à atteindre une performance de haut niveau. La motivation des rameurs ajoutée aux efforts des fédérations nationales, des clubs d aviron et des comités d organisation des championnats ainsi que du personnel et des consultants de la FISA ont fait tout le succès de cette entreprise. 6 profile Hogging the podium - the women s single by Melissa Bray Lately racing for fourth in the women s single has become the norm. Lately, that is, unless your name happens to be Ekaterina, Rumyana or Katrin. Since 2000 the top three spots have been effectively under the control of three women: Ekaterina Karsten (Khodotovitch) of Belarus, Bulgaria s Rumyana Neykova (Djadjarova) and Katrin Rutschow-Stomporowski of Germany. In fact this trio has been so successful in dominating the top that only once in the last four years has anyone else been able to capture even one medal. So how did the three come to rule this event? They all started rowing at the age of 14 after being recruited in their respective countries under the sports system that operated in Eastern Europe at the time. Their international careers all began in the single as juniors and each won gold at the World Rowing Junior Championships: Karsten in 1990, Neykova in 1991 and Rutschow-Stomporowski in Neykova and Karsten have both competed in four Olympic Games while the younger Rutschow-Stomporowski has competed in three. They all raced their first Olympics in the quad and all have World Rowing Championship titles in the single. The 90s became the development decade for the trio. They focused more and more on the single, moving up through the ranks, and finally came in together in the 1997 World Rowing Championships final. At this stage Karsten was the fastest and, apart from taking a year off to have a child, Karsten sustained a gold medal run that began at the Atlanta Olympics and remained through to Sydney four years later. By 2000 Neykova and Rutschow-Stomporowski had caught up to Karsten. The trio s dominance was now unquestionable. Less than a second separated the three at Sydney and the margin was extremely close between Karsten and Neykova... 12/1,000s of a second! Four years later at the Athens Olympics the order had changed but the top three spots remained in the same three hands. Yet despite having raced each other for over a decade they hardly know one another. «The only time we come close to each other is on the victory stage,» says Neykova. Rutschow-Stomporowski does however admit that when it comes to racing she knows her competitors intimately. «I know what Ekaterina can do well and I know what Rumi does well. But I also know what I do well,» says the German. Heading into the next four-year Olympic cycle, future decisions by these champions could well determine the arrangement of the women s single. Currently Karsten and Neykova continue to compete and Beijing has not been ruled out. Rutschow-Stomporowski is yet to officially decide. Dernièrement et à moins évidemment que vous vous appeliez Ekaterina, Rumyana ou Katrin. Car depuis 2000 en effet, les trois places de tête sont de fait contrôlées par ces trois rameuses: la Biélorusse Ekaterina Karsten (Khodotovitch), la Bulgare Rumyana Neykova (Djadjarova) et l Allemande Katrin Rutschow-Stomporowski. Ce trio a tellement de succès à la tête de cette épreuve que, sauf une fois, personne d autre n a pu remporter une médaille au cours des quatre dernières années. Comment s y sont-elles prises pour dominer l épreuve? «Je crois que nous avons toutes les trois beaucoup de talent chacune à notre propre façon et nous savons nous en servir» explique Rutschow-Stomporowski. «Notre objectif, c est l or du skiff sans compromis et ça ne fait aucun doute pour nous.» «Nous sommes compétentes, déterminées et motivées toutes les qualités pour être vainqueur,» ajoute Neykova. «Et, toutes les trois nous aimons remporter l or», précise Rutschow-Stomporowski. «Je pense que nous pouvons nous concentrer sur nous-mêmes sans oublier ce dont les autres sont capables.» Les similitudes de carrière entre ces trois rameuses sont frappantes. Elles ont débuté l aviron à 14 ans, après avoir été recrutées dans leur pays respectif selon le système sportif en usage à l époque en Europe de l Est. Leur carrière internationale a com mencé en skiff junior et elles ont toutes les trois remporté l or des Championnats du monde d aviron junior : Karsten en 1990, Neykova en 1991 et Rutschow-Stomporowski en Neykova et Karsten ont participé aux Jeux Olympiques quatre fois, tandis que Rutschow-Stomporowski, plus jeune, y est allée trois fois. Les trois ont concouru dans le quatre à leur premiers Jeux et sont plusieurs fois championnes du monde en skiff. Les années 90 ont vu l épanouissement de ce trio. Toujours plus concentrées sur le skiff, elles sont montées dans le classement avant de se rejoindre en 1997, aux finales des Cham pionnats du monde. A partir de là, Karsten est la plus rapide et hormis un congé de maternité d un an, elle s est maintenue dans une course à la médaille d or olympique commencée à Atlanta et qui s est poursuivie à Sydney quatre ans après. En 2000, Neykova et Rutschow-Stomporowski ont rattrapé Karsten, rendant la domination du trio indiscutable. Moins d une seconde séparait les trois rameuses à Sydney, avec une marge extrême ment réduite entre Karsten et Neykova... 12/1,000s de seconde! Quatre ans plus tard, aux Jeux Olympiques d Athènes, l ordre a changé mais les trois places sont demeurées entre les mêmes mains. Katrin Rutschow-Stomporowski Born in East Germany, Katrin now lives in Zurich, Switzerland with her husband, former lightweight rower for Germany Bernhard Stomporowski. / Née en Allemagne de l Est, Katrin vit désormais à Zurich (en Suisse) avec son mari, l ancien rameur poids léger allemand Bernhard Stomporowski. Started rowing at the age of 14 when she was selected through a talent ID programme under the former East German sport system. / Elle a commencé l aviron à 14 ans après avoir été sélectionnée grâce au programme d identification de talents du système sportif d Allemagne de l Est. 8 profile The Greek ascent profil by Melissa Bray What began as a coxswain/rower relationship ended with an Olympic medal for Vasileios Polymeros and Nikolaos Skiathitis of Greece. Vasileios, 29, and the younger Nick, 23, have known each other for years. Coming from the same club in Greece, Volos NO, Vasileios first got involved in rowing when the club coach visited his high school. «I got hooked on rowing,» says Vasileios whose original interest was basketball but he changed sports when the trainer punished him for a mistake. «I ran away,» says Vasileios. Nick lived close to the rowing club and began as Vasileios s coxswain. «I saw the older rowers and I wanted to be like them,» says Nick. But once oars were put in his hands Nick s rowing potential was identified. The duo first rowed together internationally at the 2001 World Rowing Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland clinching silver in the lightweight quad and after that they never looked back. «When we took the silver medal in Lucerne our coach then believed in us and tried to make a double,» says Vasileios. «From that time on we have been together.» Vasileios and Nick then began to eye up the next big target - racing for their country in their own country at the Olympic Games in one of the most competitive events: the lightweight double. The partnership worked. Three years after Lucerne they stood on the winners podium at Athens watching the waving Greek flags and the enthusiastic crowd, bronze medals being placed around their necks. Nick, quant à lui, habitait non loin du club d aviron et il a tout d abord com mencé comme barreur de Vasileios. «Je voyais les rameurs plus âgés et je voulais être comme eux» se souvient-t-il. En fait, dès le moment où il a eu les rames entre les mains, son vrai potentiel de rameur s est révélé. Le duo a ramé pour la première fois en international aux Championnats du monde d aviron de 2001 à Lucerne, Suisse, où il a décroché l argent dans le quatre poids léger. Ensuite, ni l un ni l autre n a jamais regardé en arrière. «C est lorsqu on a empoché la médaille d argent à Lucerne que notre entraîneur a vraiment commencé à croire en nous et il nous a poussés pour qu on fasse un double,» rappelle Vasileios. «C est à partir de ce moment là que nous sommes restés ensemble.» Vasileios et Nick ont alors commencé à regarder dans la direction du prochain objectif important: participer aux Jeux Olympiques pour leur pays, dans leur pays et dans l une des épreuves les plus compétitives: le double poids léger. Le partenariat a fonctionné. Trois ans après Lucerne, ils montaient à Athènes sur le podium des vainqueurs, les yeux tournés vers le drapeau grec et la foule enthousiaste, la médaille de bronze autour du cou. Their goal now is the Beijing Olympics. «We have good communication and we have found the way to make the boat run,» says Vasileios who, despite being the senior of the duo, says their talents are quite similar, their top erg scores being only one second apart - Nick slightly faster at 6.13 for 2,000 metres. Nick est légèrement plus rapide à 6.13 sur mètres. 9 profile Hero from the past: Thomas Lange by Melissa Bray Two Olympic golds in the men s single made Germany s Thomas Lange the fastest man in the world from Seoul 1988 to Barcelona After finishing with bronze in 1996 Lange chose to retire, closing a 22-year rowing career that had inspired rowers from around the globe. «I had reached the highest level of my career,» says Lange who by the time he rowed down Atlanta s 2,000 metre course had already become a doctor, been married for 12 years to Heike and had two sons, Martin and Arne. He was 32-years-old. But the legend of Lange lives on with his typical East-German right-over-left hand style of sculling and the long sleeves that he sported in the heat of the Atlanta summer. Now Lange, a plastic surgeon at the university in Lübeck, Germany, focuses on his specialty, hand surgery, with his Olympic medals discreetly tucked away Héros du passé: Thomas Lange par Melissa Bray at home. The only visible hint to his celebrated past is a rowing calendar that sits on his desk at work. Rowing is no longer at the forefront of Lange s life. Thomas Lange His family and job take precedence. But Lange still keeps a keen interest in the rowing world and his involvement remains active as both Martin and Arne have taken up the sport. «Both,» says Lange, «are good at rowing.» Sometimes Lange and his sons will go out in a quad together but their famous father stays well away from the coaching side. Lange remains in good shape, his body is still toned but smaller than in his rowing prime. He keeps fit by training three times a week and he competes in some regattas as long as they are close-by. Rowing remains his favourite sport. Dominik Keller profil In 2004 Lange raced in the double at the FISA World Rowing Masters Regatta finishing first and although he says he rarely gets asked to talk about his rowing success, last year he shared his winning insights at a sculling clinic organised by his former rival and men s single winner at Atlanta, Xeno Mueller. Lange is often recognised in Northern Germany, especially around Ratzeburg, where rowing is very popular and where Lange trained later in his rowing career. «A lot of people know me as a formerly famous rower,» he says modestly. Parfois, Lange et ses fils font équipe mais leur célèbre père ne veut pas se mêler de leur entraînement. Lange est en forme, le corps toujours aussi tonique mais plus petit que lorsqu il était au meilleur de sa carrière de rameur. Il s entraîne trois fois par semaine et prend part à des régates pour autant qu elles aient lieu pas trop loin. L aviron reste son sport favori. 10 regatta organisers World Rowing Junior Championships Brandenburg, Germany - 3 to 6 August 2005 Hartmut Duif, Chair of the Brandenburg Organising Committee, began to row at his local club at age 13. In 1992, he founded the Havel Regatta Club in Brandenburg and began to organize national rowing competitions that same year. There are 25 volunteers on the Brandenburg Organising Committee, and the World Rowing Junior Championships have been in preparation since volunteers, mostly all from Brandenburg, will work at the event itself. Hartmut is managing the event preparations as a volunteer as well and works full-time as a Sales Representative. «My greatest challenge,» he says, «is to manage my time, both of my jobs and my family at the same time. The most enjoyable side of the organizational work is being able to meet many new people from the political and business scene.» Lake Beetz Lake Beetz in Brandenburg was developed into a regatta course in the late 1960s. It hosted the 1st World Rowing Junior Championships in 1985, and after further modernization in recent years, Lake Beetz is preparing to host the Junior Championships once again. Werner s regatta experience can actually be traced all the way back to the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, where he sold regatta programmes as a 15-year-old. He had joined a rowing club the year before and was to become a national champion in the men s pair in When his rowing career came to an end in the early 50s, he began coaching both rowing and canoeing, resulting in five national titles in rowing and Olympic silver and bronze in canoeing in the 50s and 60s. But Werner is most remembered for his career as a regatta organiser, which spanned half-a-century: it began in 1952, when he helped organise a regatta for the first time and ended no earlier than In 1965 Werner became Chairman of the Duisburg Regatta Organising Committee. Under his leadership, the city of Duisburg was an international rowing hub, with the International Duisburg-Wedau Regatta annually attracting top athletes from dozens of nations at the start of the rowing season. But Werner s experience goes beyond his leadership at the Duisburg regatta and includes the European Championships (1965), the Olympic Regatta in Munich (1972), the World Championships (1983), the Universiade (1989), the World Rowing Junior Championships (2001) and countless German championships - all as a volunteer. Werner was a teacher by training and became a civil servant after the Munich Olympics as sports manager in Duisburg schools. This position allowed him to become involved in the organisation of other sports events as well. Although he retired after the World Rowing Junior Championships in 2001, he can still be seen at regattas every year, as he has built lasting relationships with National Federation leaders, coaches and athletes around the world. In recognition of the excellent services he has rendered to sports and rowing in particular, Werner Konrad has been honoured by the city of Duisburg, the German Rowing Federation, the German government and the International Rowing Federation. 12 develpment South American rowing by Melissa Bray From the exclusive private sports clubs of Argentina, to the state-run system in Cuba, South American rowing has developed via an assortment of paths as varied as the people themselves. Ever since European immigrants brought the sport to the continent a small but keen following has kept rowing alive and kicking, making the most of bodies of water ranging from lakes to rivers to the sea. FISA International Umpire Santiago Fuentes describes rowing, especially in Mexico, as originally part of high society: «People used to belong to the clubs much more for the social status than for the sport itself,» says Fuentes. «No doubt these were clubs for the social elite.» Some of these early clubs still remain with names like the Flamengo in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, the Club Nautico de la Habana in Cuba, and in Peru the Club de Regatas Lima. Many are sporting clubs that include everything from tennis to soccer to swimming pools. Today, Argentina can arguably make the claim to have the largest population of rowers. In the region of Tigre, where almost all of the rowers from this nation come from, the history of rowing is lengthy. The Tigre region has achieved the best results over the last 100 years producing most of the top rowers to go on to the international stage. The Argentinean single sculler was the only South American to medal in rowing at the Olympics (bronze in 1968 and silver in 1972) and to win the World Rowing Championships (in 1970). The second greatest South American rower followed closely on Demiddi s heals. Ricardo Ibarra, also from Argentina, made the Finals at both the 1976 and 1984 Olympic Games. Ibarra has since made his mark as one of the top coaches in the region and he continues to work as FISA Development Director for South America spreading his coaching knowledge throughout the continent. The success of Argentina s single scullers has continued through to today with the highest ranked South American rower at present being two-time Olympian Santiago Fernandez. Fernandez raced in the final at Athens finishing fourth in the single giving him the status of the highest placing South American rower at the 2004 Olympic Games. Argentina has also produced South America s top woman rower. Maria Julia Garisoain competed at both the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics in the double but found her greatest success as a lightweight single sculler at the World Rowing Championships winning bronze in 1998 and More recently Chile has made its mark on the international scene. Christian Yantani Garces and Miguel Cerda Silva achieved a first in 2002 by setting the world best time in the lightweight men s pair while winning gold at the Seville World Rowing Championships. This record still holds today. The South American rowing championships is the main event for the continent with the four yearly Pan American Games being the international highlight for the region and the number of countries partici pating has been steadily rising. Last year at Athens eight South American countries competed, an increase of three over the 2000 Olympic participation with the addition of Uruguay, Paraguay and Peru. South America will continue to face many challenges in the development of rowing. In a continent where soccer reigns supreme, interest in rowing remains on the fringe. This has been highlighted by Sao Paulo s main rowing lake which recently became so contaminated that rowing activity had to stop completely. But Fuentes remains positive in the knowledge that the rowing potential is substantial as he looks to the advantages: «Lakes and rivers are sometimes in the middle of cities,» says Fuentes who also notes the climatic advantages. «There is no snow to worry about.» «People used to belong to the clubs much more for the social status than for the sport itself»

L un d entre eux, le regretté Alberto Demiddi, est considéré à la quasi unanimité comme le plus grand rameur de toute l Amérique du Sud. Ce spécialiste du skiff est le seul Sud-américain qui ait gagné des médailles aux Jeux Olympiques (bronze en 1968 et argent en 1972) et remporté les Championnats du monde d aviron (en 1970). L Amérique du Sud continue de rencontrer de nombreuses difficultés dans le développement de l aviron. Dans un continent où le football règne en maître, l intérêt pour l aviron demeure marginal. Selon le passionné d aviron chilien, Juan Pablo Berlinger, les dépenses exigées par ce sport sont l un des principaux obstacles à son développement. «C est très difficile, car l équipement est cher et doit être importé», explique-t-il, ce qui, à son avis, limite l accessibilité de l aviron. Depuis l arrivée de ce sport sur le continent avec les immigrants européens, un modeste contingent d ardents adeptes a maintenu l aviron vivant et actif, profitant de tous les plans d eau que ce soit les lacs, la mer ou les rivières. Selon Santiago Fuentes, arbitre international FISA, l aviron, notamment au Mexique, était à l origine une marque de la haute société: «on faisait partie d un club plus pour le statut social que pour le sport luimême», souligne-t-il. «Ces clubs étaient en effet réservés à l élite sociale.» Certains de ces premiers clubs existent toujours comme le Flamengo à Rio de Janeiro, Brésil, le Club Nautico de la Havane à Cuba, ou au Pérou, le Club de Regatas de Lima. Beaucoup d entre eux sont des clubs multisports offrant tout, du tennis de table au football en passant par les piscines. A présent, l Argentine peut se targuer du plus grand nombre de rameurs. La région de Tigre, d où sont originaires presque tous les rameurs de ce pays, a une longue histoire d aviron. Elle a obtenu les meilleurs résultats dans les cent dernières années en produisant la plupart des rameurs passés au niveau international. Le second des plus grands rameurs sud-américains talonne Demiddi. Ricardo Ibarra, argentin lui aussi, est parvenu en finale aux Jeux de 1976 et de Ibarra a depuis laissé sa marque comme l un des meilleurs entraîneurs de sa région et continue à travailler comme directeur du développement de la FISA pour l Amérique du Sud, diffusant son enseignement sur tout le continent. Le succès des Argentins en skiff s est poursuivi jusqu à maintenant avec Santiago Fernandez, le rameur le mieux classé en Amérique du Sud, après avoir été olympien à deux reprises. 16 feature The woman behind regatta courses by Débora Feutren Svetla had no intention to become an Olympic champion in rowing. Happily competing as a swimmer at club level until 16 years of age, she disliked rowing when she first sat in a boat. But she was too polite to refuse trying it out. The Central Army Sports Club in Sofia was endeavouring to identify potential rowing talent in local schools. Studying at a high school in the Bulgarian capital at the time, Svetla showed no interest, but offered to take the candidates down by the rowing lake she knew so well in Pancharevo, the small village where she grew up. Coach Krasimira Zekova put her in a four and invited her to come back. Too ashamed to say no, she rowed until she finally began to enjoy the flat-water sport: «It was my first regatta. I was replacing another girl and my rowing was so bad the whole crew was shouting at me. Despite my appalling performance we won, and I ve loved rowing ever since.» Zekova would be her only coach throug hout her rowing career. Olympic-standard regatta courses worldwide bear her imprint. Depuis 20 ans, la championne olympique Svetla Otzetova met son expérience en aviron et en architecture au service de la conception des champs de courses d aviron et de canoë-kayak les plus prestigieux, pour les épreuves de la Coupe du monde, des Championnats du monde et des Jeux Olympiques. Svetla ne s imaginait pas championne olympique d aviron, car elle était heureuse comme nageuse de compétition, jusqu à l âge de 16 ans. Elle a même été plutôt mal disposée envers l aviron en prenant place pour la première fois dans une embarcation, trop bien élevée aussi pour refuser l essai qu on lui proposait. Le club central de l Armée à Sofia détectait des talents dans les écoles locales. Et Svetla, alors scolarisée dans le secondaire à Sofia, accepta d accompagner les candidats à l essai jusqu au plan d eau qu elle connaissait si bien à Pancharevo, le petit village de son enfance, bien qu elle ne compta pas participer elle-même à l essai. N osant pas refuser, Svetla se prit au jeu et finit par aimer l aviron:«pour ma première régate, je remplaçais une autre fille, mais j étais si nulle que tout l équipage me houspillait. Nous avons gagné malgré ma prestation catastrophique, et j ai adoré l aviron depuis ce jour-là.» Krasimira Zekova allait devenir son entraîneur à vie. Dix ans plus tard, en 1976, Svetla devenait championne olympique à Montréal, en deux de couple, associée à Zdravka Yordanova. Une performance d autant plus remarquable que Svetla n a pas le physique d une rameuse en catégorie open. «Mesurant 172 cm, je faisais tout mon possible pour ne pas descendre sous les 60 kg. La catégorie poids léger n existait pas encore, et je devais donc affronter des athlètes bien plus lourdes que moi.» A peine deux mois avant les Jeux de Montréal, elle soutenait sa thèse pour le diplôme d architecte.«durant mes 7 années d études universitaires, j ai dû suivre les cours, sans privilège accordé à une athlète de haut niveau, en adaptant l entraînement à mon emploi du temps. Heureusement, le lieu d entraînement était juste en face de la faculté: il y avait là un bassin d aviron, une salle de musculation et un secteur boisé pour le footing. Lightweight events had not yet been created, and I had to compete against heavier women.» Only two months prior to the Montreal Olympics she defended her graduate thesis in architecture. «During seven years of university, I had to attend lectures just as any non-athlete did and adjust rowing practice around the study schedule. Thankfully, the stadium where I trained was just across the street from university. It had a rowing tank, a weight-lifting room and a forest where I could go running. I would train early in the mornings and during breaks.» Specialized in public buildings with a particular interest in sports facilities, Svetla worked for the Bulgarian government body in charge of all major sports facilities around the country. In 1984 she worked on the design and construction of a rowing and canoeing regatta course for the first time. Built in view of the 1989 World Canoeing Champion ships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, it was later used for the 1999 World Rowing Junior Championships. «The most beautiful course in the world,» she says. Svetla s involvement with the International Rowing Federation (FISA) began in 1979, as a member of the Regatta Organisation and Installations Commission. This position slowly evolved into her current full-time occupation since 1998 as FISA s Events Director. One of Svetla s main responsibilities is to evaluate the bids submitted by cities worldwide to host Rowing World Cups, World Rowing Championships and Olympic Games. «It is a complex process where many factors need to be taken into account. The fairness of the course; the association between permanent and temporary facilities: the quality of facilities provided for teams, media and spectators; the organising committee s ability to create a rowing event that will promote rowing in the best possible way locally and internationally via the media.» Most bid cities do not need to construct regatta courses from zero. However, existing facilities frequently require upgrading, installation of temporary facilities and sometimes entire re-organisation, in which case collaboration with city authorities and designers is necessary to make sure FISA standards are met and financial resources are used efficiently. Many have seen the wonderful images of the Schinias Rowing and Canoeing Centre near Athens. We can truly say that this was one of Svetla s most satisfying accomplishments as she was involved from the very beginning and followed it each step of the way to its wonderful conclusion. n «The most challenging projects are the ones concerning the Olympic Games,» Working closely with the International Canoe Federation (ICF) is essential, as flat-water canoeing events are held on the same courses as rowing and ICF has no specialised architect. «When I design a course, I send ICF my concept, and they send me back their comments. I know their requirements, which are similar to those for rowing.» The main differences between rowing and canoeing regatta course requirements lie in race distances (50 and 1,00 compared to 2,00 for rowing) number of lanes (9 instead of 8) and lane width (9m versus 13.5m). When asked how she enjoys working with ICF, Svetla replies: «We have no arguments and collaborate well.» «The most challenging projects are the ones concerning the Olympic Games,» Svetla explains. And she steps in as soon as the final Olympic bid cities are nominated. When asked if her report can influence the final Olympic city selection, she quickly replies: «Not at all. We work with each Olympic bid city to help them attain regatta courses of equal standard. Issues sometimes arise once the Olympic city has been selected, when standards agreed beforehand have to start being implemented.» Such is the case with the 2008 Beijing Olympic course which has to be redesigned because construction began based on a different plan than the one previously approved by FISA. La collaboration étroite avec la Fédération internationale de canoë-kayak (FIC) est essentielle, car les épreuves de canoë-kayak en ligne et les épreuves d aviron ont des plans d eau communs, et la FIC ne dispose pas d architecte spécialisé. «En début de projet, j envoie mon ébauche à la FIC pour recevoir leurs commentaires. Je connais leurs besoins, semblables à ceux de l aviron.» Les principales différences tiennent à la distance (50 et 1 00 contre 2 00 pour l aviron), au nombre de lignes d eau (9 contre 8), et à la largeur des lignes d eau (9m contre 13,5m). A propos de sa collaboration avec la FIC, Svetla précise: «Pas de divergences, et une bonne collaboration.» Svetla a commencé à collaborer avec la FISA en 1979 en devenant membre de la Commission chargée de l organisation des régates et des installations. Cette collaboration s est transformée progressivement jusqu en 1998, année où elle a commencé à occuper la fonction de directrice des compétitions à temps plein. L une des attributions principales de la fonction consiste pour Svetla à évaluer les candidatures des villes pour l organisation des compétitions: Coupes du monde, Championnats du monde et Jeux Olympiques. «La tâche est complexe car beaucoup d aspects entrent en ligne de compte, à savoir une configuration de parcours équitable, la combinaison d installations permanentes et temporaires, la qualité des infrastructures pour les équipes, les médias et le public, la capacité du comité d organisation à organiser l événement de façon à assurer une promotion optimale de l aviron à travers les médias, sur le plan local et international.» La plupart des villes candidates n ont pas besoin de partir de zéro pour la réalisation du parcours, mais les installations existantes doivent néanmoins être adaptées, des installations temporaires doivent être mises en place, et parfois tout doit être remanié c est d ailleurs en pareil cas qu une collaboration s impose entre les autorités locales et les spécialistes de la conception pour garantir le respect du cahier des charges de la FISA et l utilisation rationnelle des ressources financières. «Les défis majeurs sont liés aux JO», selon Svetla, qui intervient dès la désignation des villes finalistes. Son rapport peut-il influer sur la désignation de la ville hôte? La réponse fuse:«pas du tout. Nous épaulons les villes candidates pour les aider à présenter des parcours de niveau homogène. Des difficultés apparaissent parfois après la désignation de la ville hôte, lorsque les exigences convenues préalablement doivent être mises en œuvre.» C est le cas par exemple du parcours de Beijing 2008, dont il a fallu repenser la conception car la construction s engageait sur des bases autres que celles approuvées initialement par la FISA. Beaucoup ont apprécié le concept du Centre olympique d aviron et canoë-kayak de Schinias près d Athènes, et on peut affirmer que ce concept est l un des plus accomplis de Svetla. 20 feature The international style of coaches by Melissa Bray You can t say what country they re from, but you can say who their coach is. South Africa s head coach Christian Felkel is one of many coaches to affirm this sentiment on the current state of rowing styles in the world. The style influence is totally from the coach, not the country, says Felkel who first learned to row and coach in Germany. This trend is the result of coaching becoming increasingly international in recent years as coaches move away from their home country to take coaching jobs in other countries around the world. One of the best known of the United States coaches is Kris Korzeniowski. Originally from Poland, Korzeniowski has coached in Canada, Italy, China and the Netherlands before returning to the United States in He is now the head sculling coach. You can tell who the rower is coached by, says Korzeniowski echoing Felkel s words. The style is influenced by the coach, not the country. Korzeniowski says that although he has had to adapt his coaching style in terms of his approach to athletes, technically he has retained the same ways when he has moved countries. The bodywork is the only difference, says Korzeniowski in terms of styles throughout the world. Some rowers have more layback, some lift the body, some drive more on the legs, some have fast hands out, some slow. It all comes with the coach and how they believe we should move the boat. For FISA s 2001 Coaches Conference, Korzeniowski presented a paper that divided coaching styles into three major schools of training: 1. The traditional East-German school exemplified by a lot of mileage and less intensity work. 2. The mixed school created by Thor Nilsen which works at developing every physiological characteristic and favouring a medium amount of volume. US Rowing 3. The power school which is exemplified by high intensity with most training done in a competitive environment, like rowers being put side-byside or in a time trial situation. In my opinion every school has had a big share of success, says Korzeniowski, noting that at the finish line of international races boats are so close that it is difficult to pinpoint what is the decisive factor in winning. Korzeniowski says his best coaching education came when he worked in Italy in the 1980s under Italy s then Technical Director Thor Nilsen. Nilsen, the ultimate international coach, can list athletes from around the globe amongst those he has coached. I coach athletes, not countries, says Nilsen who notes that rowing styles throughout the world have become more uniform in recent years. Igor Grinko In the lead up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China has brought in a new head coach - Igor Grinko. Starting off under the Soviet system as a national team rower before becoming a coach, Grinko then went to the United States where he stayed until Although Grinko says he has stuck with the coaching methods he developed while in the former Soviet Union, he observes that the rowing environments have been very different. US Rowing Kris Korzonowski In China the athletes are recruited at a young age. They are taken away and get free food, free accommodation and are guaranteed a job. Some don t know why they re recruited, they just get told to go. This is a different system from the US, says Grinko who had to learn to coach athletes that were there by their own free will and completely self-funded. The Chinese system very much reminds him of rowing in the ex-ussr. Meanwhile in the road to the next Olympics, coaches have again been on the move around the world as National Federations update their four-year plan. Included in the moves is Italian Gianni Postiglione leaving Spain to join the Greek team while Germany s Harald Jahrling has moved from Australia to head Ireland s rowing programme. Dutch coach René Mijnders joins the Swiss national team and Chris Nilsson leaves the United States team to return to coach in his home country New Zealand. On another stage, New Zealander Duncan Holland has moved from The Netherlands to become head coach at Cambridge University. Although Felkel sees variations throughout the world he notes that all the top crews have one thing in common - they keep the boat running. At the end of the day the way a rowing boat moves hasn t changed in a thousand years.
