Late test for central slip division and retraction: If the proximal interphalangeal joint is held passively extended, it is possible for the normal individual to flex the distal joint in isolation. If the central slip has been ruptured, has retracted and become adherent, there is increasing difficulty in performing this action because the lateral bands retract proximally and are too tense to permit flexion of the distal interphalangeal joint.
