2 2 September 4 septembre 2015 Citoyen Borden Citizen Essa News The end of an era After eight successful years, Keith & Sandi White will be closing Angus Borden Music, at 5 Fraser Street in Angus, the end of September, Angus Borden Music has been proud to provide the sale and rental of musical instruments and gear, books, repairs, and, of course, music lessons to Angus and area since September Keith and Sandi sincerely appreciate the significant dedication and contribution of the music teachers (currently Ian, Diana, Esther, Mike, Christina, and Eric) and staff (Joe) who have provided a high level of professional instruction and friendly customer service. *A note for music students, lessons will not resume in September. Keith greatly appreciates all of the customers that have stepped through the door of Angus Borden Music (many have become close personal friends) for everything from guitar strings, to instrument repairs, to lessons and sometimes, just knowledgeable advice. Many other community residents and business owners often just dropped by the store to find out what was going on in Angus, find their way around town, or to discuss Essa Township topics. Angus Borden Music was also proud to have participated in many elementary and high school events, community festivals, fund raising and service club activities. Keith will continue to be a participating member of the Lions Club of Angus and District and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 499. Interest from the general public all across North America in musical instruments has waned over the last few years. Other pastimes seemed to have attracted more attention, and along with major changes in the music industry of distribution, cost of inventory, import tariffs, and Canada/USA dollar exchange, profitability has been greatly affected. Keith will still be providing related services such as live sound and lighting for bands and events, installations, rentals, and some repairs, although the retail store will be closed. Keith also looks forward to more available time for other interests in the community and especially at home; Sandi will be pleased about that! Keith and Sandi sincerely thank all those in Angus and area for such a great experience, and for their support and patronage over the years. Angus Dart League? They ease the financial burden of education, allowing deserving students the opportunity to learn and opening doors to their future. On August 24, CFB Borden s Commander, Col Doyon, had the great honour of helping open some doors for five deserving students. The students who received the scholarships are, to say the least, impressive. For example, Justin Turcotte intends on pursuing an Honours, Bachelor of Science at the University of Ottawa. Turcotte had maintained an average of 96 per cent, while participating in the Cadet program, working at the library, heading up an anti-bullying campaign, to name a few of his accomplishments. Anna Mary Prust won her scholarship by keeping an average of 93 per cent, while participating in volleyball, track & field, ultimate Frisbee, volunteering at the hospital in Barrie, and collecting and donating soaps and shampoos for a local women s shelter. Her academic talents will now take her to Queen s University in Kingston where she will study Science and Concurrent Education. Joining Anna, with an average of 93 per cent, is Sabrina Stinson, who will be heading to London to study Arts and Social Sciences at Western University. During her high school career, Sabrina was an exceptional athlete, participating in soccer, basketball and volleyball, while also finding time to support local charities such as Relay for Life and the Canadian Cancer Society. The last two recipients of the scholarship, Taylor Bornhold and Jake Daviau, graduated with averages of 86 per cent and 84 per cent respectively. Along with earning similar averages, they also share a love for helping in their communities as well as lending a hand to communities in need internationally. Les récipiendaires étaient impressionnants, et c est le moins que l on puisse dire. Par exemple, M. Justin Turcotte envisage de poursuivre un baccalauréat spécialisé en sciences de l Université d Ottawa. Turcotte a dû maintenir une moyenne de 96 p. 100, pendant qu il participait au Programme des cadets, travaillait à la bibliothèque, dirigeait une campagne contre l intimidation, pour ne nommer que quelques unes de ses nombreuses réalisations. Anna Mary Prust a obtenu sa bourse d études, en maintenant une moyenne de 93 p. 100 tout en pratiquant le volleyball, l athlétisme, le frisbee ultime, en faisant du bénévolat à l hôpital de Barrie et en participant à la collecte et au don de savons et de shampoings auprès d une maison de refuge pour femmes. Ses talents scolaires la mèneront désormais à l'université Queen s, à Kingston, où elle suivra un programme de sciences et d éducation concurrent. Avec une moyenne de 93 p. 100 comme Anna, Sabrina Stinson se rendra à Londres pour étudier à la Faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines de l'université Western. Pendant son séjour, elle a aidé plusieurs campagnes de sensibilisation et une campagne de collecte de fonds en appui au Cambodia Landmine Museum. Pendant ce temps, Jake s est rendu au Ghana, où il a aidé à construire une école. Jake a également participé à de nombreuses activités de collecte de fonds, notamment un dîner gala et une vente aux enchères, afin de pouvoir acheter les fournitures scolaires pour l école nouvellement construite. While there, she helped with several awareness campaigns and a fundraising campaign in support of the Cambodia Landmine Museum. Meanwhile, Jake took time to travel to Ghana, where he assisted with building a school. Jake also got involved in numerous fundraising events including a gala dinner and auction, all in an effort to purchase school supplies for the newly constructed school. Col Doyon commented about this impressive group, We value family, we value community support and that s why we put this scholarship fund in place.

5 Base Borden Motorcycle Club ride Randonnée du Club de moto de la BFC Borden Citoyen Borden Citizen September 4 septembre On Aug , members of the BBMC participated in the last leg of the Veterans Signature Bike Build and Cross Canada Ride. A big thank you to Dave Paradis, Mike Paradis, Margaret Lever and Peter Bannister for providing the opportunity to join their group on the last part of their extraordinary ride for this journey in support of the Soldier On Fund. Starting in the town of Mansfield, a group of great people rode to Wildside Motorcycles in Toronto to enjoy a BBQ, live music and beautiful weather; a perfect day for a ride. Le 15 août 2015, les membres du Club de moto de la BFC Borden (CMBB) ont pris part à la dernière étape de la motocyclette de marque et la randonnée pancanadienne. Un grand merci à Dave Paradis, Mike Paradis, Margaret Lever et Peter Bannister de nous avoir permis de nous joindre à leur groupe lors de la dernière partie de leur tournée exceptionnelle effectuée dans le cadre de ce périple spécial à l appui au Fonds Sans limites. En effet, ce groupe de personnes remarquables a quitté la ville de Mansfield pour se rendre à Wildside Motorcycles, à Toronto, afin de participer à un barbecue et un spectacle de musique, et de profiter d une belle journée, idéale pour la randonnée. The intent of this combined event is to ensure that our community is aware of the services that are available within the Base as well as the surrounding area. 6 6 September 4 septembre 2015 Citoyen Borden Citizen Going the distance to end children s cancer By Par LCdr/Capc Wendy Goulet On 15 July, 2015 members of the CFB Borden community from the Canadian Forces Recruiting Group (CFRG), 16 Wing and CFSATE gathered at Georgian College to participate in the coast-tocoast Barrie Community Inside Ride. Legs and lungs burned as the eight teams cycled for an hour, pushing hard to accumulate every kilometer and out distance the others. In addition to biking, each of the teams raised money in support of children and families battling childhood cancers. The Barrie Community Inside Ride was a precursor to the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride (SNKCR) from Vancouver to Halifax, beginning September 10. The national ride selects 35 riders who will cycle 200 to 300 km each day for three weeks. This year, Major Dan Mainguy from CFRG was selected to participate, and will be heading to Vancouver in a few weeks. The route will bring the team to the Georgian Mall in Barrie on September 20, and also allows for supporters to ride along from Barrie to Etobicoke. For more details on how you can support Major Mainguy please visit the ride website at Parcourir la distance pour arrêter le cancer chez les enfants Le 15 Juillet 2015, les membres de la communauté de la BFC Borden du Groupe de recrutement des Forces canadiennes (GRFC), de la 16 e Escadre et du ETGAFC se sont réunis au Collège Georgian dans l espoir de pouvoir participer au Tour de vélo d une côte à l autre organisé par la communauté de Barrie. Les jambes et les poumons ont brûlés pendant que les huit équipes ont pédalé pendant une heure et ont poussé très fort pour accumuler chaque kilomètre et prendre de la distance sur les autres. En plus de faire du vélo, chacune des équipes ont ramasser des fonds pour supporter les enfants et les familles qui luttent contre les cancers chez les enfants. Le Tour de vélo de la communauté de Barrie était un précurseur de Sears à vélo contre le cancer chez les jeunes de Vancouver à Halifax qui débutera le 10 Septembre. Le tour national ont sélectionné 35 cyclistes qui parcourront de 200 à 300 km chaque jour pendant trois semaines. Cette année, le Major Dan Mainguy du GRFC a été choisi pour participer et se rendra à Vancouver dans quelques semaines. L'itinéraire amènera l'équipe au centre commercial Georgian à Barrie le 20 Septembre et les supporteurs seront autorisés à rouler à vélo avec eux de Barrie à Etobicoke. 7 Dragon Boat Festival CFB Borden had a solid showing on Saturday, August 22 at the Barrie Dragon Boat Festival, with 9 teams representing. The Canadian Forces Fire and CBRN Academy (CFFCA) Dragon Slayers had a particularly good day, winning first place in the most prestigious Platinum Division, in other words, they were the overall champions of the entire festival! The CFSATE Silverdarts also won first place in the Gold Division with the 31 H Svc C a close second. CFRG HQ Sea Froms took top spot in the Bronze Division. The teams, through a variety of fundraising initiatives, raised approx. $12,000 in support of the United Way, Soldier On, the MP Fund for Blind Children and the Canadian Red Cross. Congratulations to all the teams (below) that participated, and raised money for all the worthy charities. Festival de bateaux-dragons Le samedi 22 août, la BFC Borden a été très bien représentée par ses neuf équipes qui ont pris part au festival de bateaux-dragons de Barrie. Les Dragon Slayers de l École des pompiers et de la défense CBRN des Forces canadiennes se sont particulièrement bien démarqués en remportant la première place de la division Platine, la plus prestigieuse du festival. L équipe a été couronnée grande championne du festival! Les Silverdarts de l ETGAFC ont également remporté de justesse la première place de la division Or, l équipe du 31e C Svc S FC qui la suivait de près a terminé au deuxième rang. Les Sea Froms du QG GRFC ont, quant à eux, remporté les honneurs de la division Bronze. It s very important to have this day for them, because they are the ones supporting all the appreciation events that we have on Base, said Cdr Langlois, Base Administrative Officer. After the BBQ lunch provided, a hard-hitting game of Bubble-Soccer started up. The game was a hilarious spectator sport that was tons of laughs, yet slightly tough on the competitors, including CWO Mario Duchesne who admitted, After five minutes, I was sweating like a pig. Good times were had all around, thank you again to the staff of NPF for all you do! This flushing procedure will cause disturbances and discolouration of the water to all buildings. Flushing of taps by the occupants will reduce any possible problems caused by this procedure. Also, it is wise to drain your hot water heater periodically and flush to prevent discolouration and odours. These procedures should be followed throughout the year, but they are particularly important during flushing operations. The flushing program is an ongoing preventative maintenance program to supply quality water to all buildings. The RP Ops Det OC regrets any inconvenience and appreciates the consumers understanding and cooperation in this effort.
