1 Language Requirements Exigences linguistiques Most of the universities require that applicants whose first language is one other than English, or who were educated in a country where English is not normally the language of instruction, write or take one of the language tests listed below. Each institution has its own requirements, which are subject to change. Most universities apply more stringent requirements for certain programs. It is in the applicant s best interests to contact the universities directly for more information. Algoma University College The minimum number of years to waive requirements is three years full-time in an English-speaking educational institution. 550 PBT; 213 CBT; 79 ibt Minimum CAEL Score: 60 Students who do not have the required English language proficiency test score may enter into Algoma University College s ESL program called SPELL Sault Program for English Language Learning. Upon successful completion of SPELL, students may enter into a degree program. McMaster University full-time academic study in an English-speaking educational institution or four years residing in an English-speaking country. If an applicant has been in the Canadian school system for four years or more, ENG4U with a minimum grade of 70% will be accepted to fulfill the admissions English requirement. Students who have been enrolled in the Canadian school system for less than four years must provide TOEFL (or equivalent) in addition to ENG4U. University of Ottawa/Université d Ottawa To be exempt from presenting a language test score, you must have obtained a diploma following at least three years of full-time secondary or postsecondary studies at an institution where the language of instruction is strictly English and in a country where the official language is English. 580 PBT, TWE of 4.5; 237 CBT, TWE of 4.5; 92 ibt, with 24 Writing and Reading, 20 Speaking and Listening Minimum IELTS Score: 7.0 CanTEST, CAEL Last test date: June 1 If a student wishes to study in French and their mother tongue is not French, or if they have not studied full time in French for at least three years, the University reserves the right to administer a written proficiency test. Competency in English and French is compulsory for French and Translation programs. Applicants to these programs must pass a language proficiency test (with a minimum grade of at least 70%) prior to admission. If an English facility test is required, students will be exempt from also having to include a 4U English (ENG4U/EAE4U) in their admission average, provided six other acceptable 4U credits are presented. 100 total ibt with 22 on Writing (discretionary range 89 99, provided at least 19 on Writing is obtained) 600 total PBT with 5.0 on TWE (discretionary range , provided at least 4.5 on TWE is obtained) 250 total CBT with 5.0 on Essay (discretionary range , provided at least 4.5 on Essay is obtained) overall with no part score below 80 (discretionary range 80 84, provided no part score is below 80) overall with no band below 6.0 Minimum CAEL Score: 70 overall with no part below 60 Minimum CanTEST Score: 4.5 average with no part below 4 Minimum ELDA/COPE Score: 5 overall with 2 on Writing and l or 2 on Reading and Listening Results must be received by April 1. If an applicant scores in the discretionary ranges listed above, and is otherwise well qualified for admission, the university will automatically consider other academic evidence of English proficiency (for example, results in English courses) and will advise the applicant whether or not the English facility requirements have been satisfied. Letters of reference will NOT be used for this purpose. Applicants whose first language is French and who have achieved satisfactory academic progress in at least four years of full-time study in Canada are not required to provide proof of English facility. Full English facility requirements are available at the above web address, as well as many other acceptable tests/qualifications. Trent University The minimum number of years to waive requirements for an English proficiency test is three full years of study in an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, plus a 4U English course (ENG4U is preferred). 237 CBT; 580 PBT; 90 ibt; with a minimum TWE score of 4.5 with no part below 80 with no band below 6.0 June 1 University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) The minimum number of years to waive requirements is three years (or equivalent in part-time studies) or at least six semesters (studying no less than three courses per semester) in a secondary school or university where the language of instruction and examination was English. The minimum three-year requirement does not include time enrolled in ESL courses. A 4U English is also required. Page 3

UOIT s TOEFL Code: 7178 Students must arrange for original test scores to be sent directly from the testing centre to the UOIT Registrar s Office. International students currently studying in Ontario, who have received an offer of admission to the university, can also choose to satisfy their English language proficiency requirement by registering for UOIT's internal English language proficiency test. Successful completion of this test will satisfy the English language proficiency requirement for UOIT. Students who do not meet the university's minimum English language proficiency requirement on this test will automatically receive an offer of admission to UOIT's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. Upon completion of level 10 of this program, students will be permitted to enter into their university program directly. Visit for test dates and more information. University of Waterloo For students to be exempt from these requirements, they must have studied in an English-language school system for the four most recent years preceding the beginning of studies at the University of Waterloo. PBT* 600 total with 5.0 TWE. require 580 overall with 4.5 TWE. CBT* 250 total with 5.0 Essay Rating. require 237 overall with 4.5 Essay Rating. ibt 90 total with 25 Writing and 25 Speaking. Note: Engineering and Architecture programs require 100 total with 26 Writing and 26 Speaking. * Applicants who submit a CBT or PBT score must also present a Test of Spoken English (TSE) score of 50 (Applied Health Sciences and Science, 45) for admission consideration. Math and Computer Science Regular applicants are exempt from the TSE requirement. York administers the French Language Admissions Test (FLAT) for students choosing to prove language proficiency in French rather than English. Course requirements include 4U English (or Français FRA4U, FIF4U or FEF4U for students from French first-language schools). 6 Exigences linguistiques Collège militaire royal du Canada Les cours se donnent en français et en anglais. Les candidats bilingues peuvent choisir de suivre leurs cours en français ou en anglais. Puisque les candidats doivent être citoyens canadiens pour être admissibles au CMR, il n'y a pas d'examen de compétence linguistique précédant l'admission. Il est entendu que tous les candidats doivent répondre aux exigences d'admission du programme auquel ils font demande incluant un cours de français 12 e année U. Les cours de langue sont obligatoires pour tous les candidats qui n'ont pas encore un niveau de compétence élevé dans les deux langues officielles. Quand un étudiant a atteint le niveau qualifié, il doit subir un test de certification de la langue seconde. Tout étudiant doit réussir ce test de compétence linguistique avant de recevoir le diplôme. Université Laurentienne Un cours de français 12 e année U est exigé pour l'admission aux programmes offerts entièrement ou partiellement en français. Les personnes qui choisissent un programme offert uniquement en anglais peuvent suivre des cours facultatifs en français. Toutes les candidates et tous les candidats de l'école secondaire qui ont étudié au Canada pendant moins de quatre ans devront faire preuve de leurs compétences linguistiques en français ou en anglais. Collège universitaire de Hearst Le cours de français 12 e année U est exigé pour l'admission au Collège universitaire de Hearst. Pour obtenir leur diplôme, les étudiantes et les étudiants doivent réussir les cours FRAN 1806F Introduction à la langue française I et FRAN 1807F Introduction à la langue française II. Université d Ottawa L'Université d'ottawa offre ses cours en français et en anglais. Les candidats qui maîtrisent les deux langues officielles pourront s'inscrire dans la langue de leur choix. L'Université se réserve le droit de demander une preuve de compétence linguistique à tout candidat dont la langue maternelle n'est ni le français ni l'anglais. Tous les candidats doivent se conformer aux exigences d'admission du programme, notamment en ce qui a trait aux cours de français ou d English 4U. Université Saint-Paul L'Université Saint-Paul offre des programmes en langues française et anglaise. Les candidats doivent maîtriser la langue d'enseignement du programme auquel ils s'inscrivent. L'Université se réserve le droit de faire passer un test de compétence linguistique lorsque l'analyse du dossier d'admission ne permet pas de déterminer une connaissance suffisante du français ou de l'anglais. York University Campus Glendon Glendon est une faculté bilingue, c'est-à-dire que les cours sont offerts en français et en anglais. Lors de la demande d'admission, tou(te)s les candidat(e)s du niveau secondaire qui ont étudié au Canada (ou dans un pays oû le français ou l anglais est la langue officielle) pendant moins de quatre ans, devront démontrer leur compétence linguistique en français ou en anglais. Le Service de liaison de Glendon administre le test de classement de langue française pour ceux qui désirent démontrer leur compétence dans cette langue. English 12 e année U (français 12 e année U FRA4U, FIF4U ou FEF4U dans les écoles secondaires de langue française) est obligatoire, alors qu'un cours de 12 e année dans la langue seconde est recommandé.
