Local celebrities and Ottawa businesspeople competed in a day-long track and field event to benefit the Amethyst Women s Addiction Centre. This new concept fundraiser is the first of its kind for Amethyst and stemmed from the inspiration of Amethyst supporter, Masha Krupp, President and CEO of The Masha Krupp Translation Group Limited (MKTG) and presenting sponsor of the event. The day had something for everyone and Amethyst is very grateful to all of the sponsors and participants for making the day such a success. Thanks to the generous support of local businesses and individuals, the Amethyst Track Challenge raised a whopping $36,150 in its first year! Marjolaine Fournier Maria Fitzpatrick As a local businesswoman, I wanted to help an organization that supports women and children in the community, explained Ms. Krupp. This project is about local companies giving to their community, and the event allows a wonderful opportunity for CEOs and executives to network with one another, and more importantly, with their staff. 2 A m e t h y s t M a t t e r s M e s s a g e f r o m A m e t h y s t C o - C h a i r By Sue Pihlainen My name is Sue Pihlainen and I am a co-chair of Amethyst Women s Addiction Centre. I am very excited to be working with such a wonderful group of women who truly are committed to supporting other women in an empowering way. Working within a modified collective is also what led me to want to be a part of this organization. As a new board, we have had the support of the entire staff team to help us become more familiar with the organization. We appreciate the staff s patience with us, and their willingness to share and work with this new board. It is becoming more exciting as we learn the many aspects of their work. The board of directors has some diversity and the different perspectives can only make us stronger. It sure makes for lively board meetings, which we have been enjoying lately. On behalf of the Board, we would like to thank the members of the community who volunteer their time to help with fundraising and volunteer outreach work. We would also like to thank the individuals and organizations in the community who help Amethyst through financial support; it is greatly appreciated. This funding has been directed towards Amethyst s Enriched Child Care Program, which provides group therapy and one-on-one counseling for children between the ages of 4 and 14. Amethyst Women s Addiction Centre wishes to acknowledge the generous support of the Kiwanis Club of Bytown. In September, the Foundation Committee of the Kiwanis Club of Bytown made a donation to Amethyst towards the purchase of materials for the Children s Drug Abuse Prevention Program. This donation will directly benefit a number of children who are in our program this year, so we gratefully acknowledge this donation.

3 A m e t h y s t M a t t e r s Page 3 A m e t h y s t A d d i c t i o n O v e r T h e H o l i d a y s C a m p a i g n W i n s I n t e r n a t i o n a l A w a r d The Amethyst Women s Addiction Centre s Addiction Over the Holidays campaign has been awarded the 2008 Summit International Silver Award in the Community Relations Category. Among the thousands of creative entries from 25 countries received this year by the Summit International Awards judging committee, the Addiction Over the Holidays campaign scored among the very best. We are thrilled and very proud to have our campaign recognized among the best on an international level, said Amethyst Coordinator, Carol Wu. This campaign helped reinforce the important role that Amethyst plays in the community and, most importantly, drew attention to the important issue of alcohol use. Amethyst, in partnership with Impact Public Affairs, launched a community relations campaign last December to remind Canadians that alcohol addiction relapse is particularly prominent during the holiday season, and that people at risk of developing an addiction are at a greater risk around t he holidays. We were very pleased with the level of media attention that this campaign generated for Amethyst, said Impact President, Huw Williams. Amethyst provides an important service to the community, but is often overlooked when people think about their charitable donations. A w a r e n e s s M a t t e r s Amethyst continues to play an active role in the community and is always working hard to build awareness. Most recently, Amethyst has attended the following events: Take Back The Night, now in 30th year, is an emotional event, wherein hundreds of women (and some male supporters )take to the streets of Ottawa to demand an end to violence against women. Amica, a local retirement residence. Amethyst highlighted gambling addiction for the seniors attending the wellness fair. Coming up: Woman Abuse Prevention Month (November) National Addiction Awareness Week (2 nd week of Nov.) Drug Awareness Week (3 rd week of Nov.) World AIDS Day (December 1 st )

4 Amethyst Matters Page 4 The 2008 Amethyst Track Challenge Presented by The Masha Krupp Translation Group Race Against the Mayor hopefuls, and Amethyst Coordinator Carol Wu. In order to create some buzz around the event, a promotional event was held June 5th, The race drew a crowd in the street as passers-by gathered to see what the excitement was about. Journalists from each and every local media outlet arrived with full equipment, ready to capture the exciting race. Amethyst coordinated a unique and very exciting 50-yard dash involving Mayor Larry O Brien. The Mayor raced against Amethyst Track Challenge presenting sponsor Masha Krupp, future Beijing Olympic Esther Akinsulie - National 200m Champion and 2008 Beijing Olympic hopeful, is interviewed by CBC following the race. Amethyst was featured on the front page of the Metro the following day, the cover of the Citizen City section, and the race aired on CBC News and A-News. Mayor O Brien also spoke about the event on his personal blog. What great exposure! CEO Challenge A highlight during the Amethyst Track Challenge on June 25th was the popular CEO Challenge, where local celebrities and CEOs ran a 50-yard sprint. Participants included A-Channel cohost Kurt Stoodley, presenting sponsor Masha Krupp of The Masha Krupp Translation Group Ltd. and Impact Public Affairs President Huw Williams, among others. Des célébrités locales et des gens d affaires d Ottawa ont participé à une journée d épreuves d athlétisme au bénéfice du Centre Amethyst pour femmes toxicomanes. Ce concept de collecte de fonds est une première pour Amethyst.
