She took some time to answer questions on what her experience at the Centre has been like. Why did you choose to do your placement at Amethyst? I chose to do my placement at Amethyst because I was always interested in addictions and mental health counselling. Even though Amethyst is primarily an addictions treatment service, I am still able to gain exposure to clients dealing with mental health issues because the two are so often intertwined. Amethyst is able to allow me to gain lots of client exposure and provide me with opportunities to develop practical counselling skills with individuals and groups. The staff at Amethyst have also been very supportive of allowing me to work at my own pace, and are very encouraging of taking on new tasks. Also, their roots in feminist principles appealed to my core values and I was very excited when I learned that they ran as a modified collective. What do you do day-to-day at Amethyst? Recently, I had the privilege of completing the 8 Day Intensive Treatment program where I was able to observe the entire process and participate in the workshops. On the regular day-to-day, I ve been attending and co-facilitating group sessions. I have also been able to sit in on assessments with new clients, and very soon I am going to be conducting my own client assessments. On top of that, I have been attending staff and treatment meetings which are helpful for developing my understanding of working within a modified collective as well as learning about the challenges many social service agencies are facing in today s climate, both economically and socially. What is your career goal? Do you want to continue in addiction services? The first part of my career goal is to earn a Master s degree in social work. From there, I would love to continue working with clients doing mental health and addictions counselling. I have a strong desire to pursue psychiatric social work in a hospital setting.

2 Page 2 A m e t h y s t F e a t u r e d o n Ta l k O t t a w a The fall is always a busy time for Amethyst due to the United Way/Centraide s federal government fundraising initiative entitled the Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign (GCWCC). This year, Amethyst was a highly visible part of the GCWCC, appearing at five outreach events at different government departments to speak to employees on why the United Way/Centraide is an organization worth supporting. In addition to in-person outreach sessions, Amethyst was also featured on Talk Ottawa, a popular program on Rogers Television. Sandi Harmer, the Health Promotions Coordinator at Amethyst, spoke at length on the importance of fundraising in order to continue presenting the Centre s many programs to the women in Ottawa who need it most. 3 A m e t h y s t Ta l k s G a m b l i n g w i t h O t t a w a C i t y C o u n c i l Problem gambling took centre stage in October when the Ottawa City Council participated in a public debate regarding the concept of a new casino for the city. It was important that Amethyst be part of the conversation given the Centre s Problem Gambling program. Carol Wu, Amethyst s Managing Coordinator, spoke to over one hundred participants in addition to the Finance and Economic Development Committee on the negative social consequences that can arise from having casinos close by. It was important that Amethyst be present for this type of discussion, as a new casino would inevitably impact the number of women our Centre sees with gambling problems, explained Gundel Lake, Amethyst s Problem Gambling Counsellor. There are social consequences that can arise from having a casino in the community; it s not only about the individual gambler but the impacts to the community at large. Page 3 Women s experiences are often not represented in available gambling programs. This makes it difficult for women to recognize their own gambling as problematic. If they don t recognize it as such, it is not likely that they will seek out services. It is important to showcase the gambling addiction services that do exist in the Ottawa area, and that support is available for women who could benefit from it. It s important to remember that problem gambling is not just about losing money. Gambling problems can affect a person s whole life, continued Lake. If the casino plans move forward, the city will have to be ready to spend some of the additional revenue on social programs targeted towards helping the men and women who will undoubtedly need the support as a result. Amethyst s Managing Coordinator, Carol Wu, speaks at a City Council meeting to discuss the social consequences that could occur if a new casino is built in Ottawa. The City Council meeting was featured in a variety of media outlets, including the Ottawa Sun, which mentioned Amethyst in the article.

4 Page 4 A m e t h y s t s o u l è v e l e s p r o b l è m e s d e d é p e n d a n c e a u j e u a u p r è s d u C o n s e i l m u n i c i p a l d O t t a w a Les problèmes de dépendance au jeu étaient au cœur d un débat public sur la construction d un nouveau casino à Ottawa qui a eu lieu en octobre et auquel a participé le Conseil municipal d Ottawa. Il était important que le Centre Amethyst prenne part aux discussions, puisqu il offre le Programme de traitement pour les joueuses compulsives. Carol Wu, coordonnatrice d Amethyst, a pris la parole devant plus de cent participants et le Comité des finances et du développement économique afin de mettre en évidence les conséquences négatives sur le plan social qui peuvent découler d un casino à proximité. «Il était important qu Amethyst soit présent pour ce type de discussion, puisque la présence d un nouveau casino aurait des répercussions inévitables sur un certain nombre de femmes qui, selon le Centre, ont des problèmes de dépendance au jeu, a expliqué Gundel Lake, conseillère en matière de jeu compulsif d Amethyst. Des conséquences sur le plan social peuvent découler de la présence d un casino dans la collectivité; il s agit non seulement des conséquences sur la personne aux prises avec une dépendance au jeu, mais aussi celles sur l ensemble de la collectivité.» Dans la majorité des cas, les femmes ne sont pas représentées dans les programmes d aide aux personnes ayant des problèmes de dépendance au jeu. Il est donc difficile pour les femmes de prendre conscience qu elles ont des problèmes de dépendance au jeu. Si elles n en prennent pas conscience, il y a peu de chances qu elles aient recours aux services. Il est important de mettre en valeur les services de lutte contre la dépendance au jeu qui sont offerts dans la région d Ottawa et de souligner que les femmes ayant ce problème peuvent bénéficier de ces services. «Il importe de se rappeler que les problèmes de dépendance au jeu ne se résument pas uniquement à perdre de l argent. Les problèmes de dépendance au jeu peuvent avoir des répercussions sur tous les aspects de la vie d une personne, a ajouté Mme Lake. Si l on passe aux prochaines étapes des plans relatifs au casino, la Ville devra être disposée à dépenser une partie des revenus générés pour mettre en œuvre des programmes sociaux visant à fournir de l aide aux hommes et aux femmes qui en auront sans aucun doute besoin.» Un article portant sur la réunion du Conseil municipal a paru dans la première section du Ottawa Citizen, ainsi que plusieurs photos, y compris la présentation d Amethyst destinée au Comité.

5 C e n t r e A m e t h y s t P o i n t d e v u e d u n e é t u d i a n t e Natalie Kelly entame sa quatrième année d études dans le cadre du programme de baccalauréat en service social avec une mineure en psychologie à la Carleton University et effectue un stage au Centre Amethyst. Elle a pris quelques minutes pour répondre aux questions sur le déroulement de son stage au Centre. Pourquoi avez-vous choisi Amethyst pour effectuer votre stage? J ai décidé de faire mon stage au Centre Amethyst parce que j ai toujours manifesté un intérêt particulier pour le counseling en matière de santé mentale et de toxicomanie. Bien que le Centre Amethyst offre principalement des services de traitement de la toxicomanie, je suis tout de même appelée à traiter avec des clientes qui sont aux prises avec des problèmes de santé mentale étant donné que ceux-ci et les problèmes de toxicomanie sont souvent interreliés. Amethyst m offre la possibilité d intervenir auprès de cette clientèle et d acquérir des compétences pratiques en counseling auprès de personnes et de groupes. Les membres du personnel d Amethyst se sont montrés également très coopératifs en me permettant de travailler à mon propre rythme et en m encourageant à entreprendre de nouvelles tâches. De plus, le fait que le Centre ait pris racine dans les principes féministes m attirait en raison de mes valeurs fondamentales. J étais également très heureuse lorsque j ai appris que le Centre menait ses activités comme un collectif modifié. Quelles sont vos tâches quotidiennes au Centre Amethyst? Natalie Kelly, qui effectue actuellement son stage d'étudiante chez Amethyst, discute avec Nadine Letang à une réunion. Page 5 J ai récemment eu le privilège de suivre le Programme de traitement intensif de huit jours dans le cadre duquel j ai pu observer l ensemble du processus et participer aux ateliers. Dans le cadre de mes tâches quotidiennes, je participe aux séances de groupe et collabore à leur animation. J ai également eu la possibilité d assister à des évaluations de nouvelles clientes. Je serai très bientôt en mesure d'effectuer moi-même les évaluations des clientes. De plus, j ai assisté à des réunions du personnel et à des réunions cliniques qui m ont permis de comprendre le travail au sein d un collectif modifié, ainsi que les enjeux auxquels de nombreux organismes de services sociaux font face dans le contexte économique et social actuel. Quel est votre objectif de carrière? Voulez-vous poursuivre votre carrière dans le domaine des services de toxicomanie? Mon objectif de carrière consiste d abord à obtenir une maîtrise en service social. J aimerais ensuite continuer à offrir à des clients des services de counseling en matière de santé mentale et de toxicomanie. J ai le désir profond de poursuivre une carrière en service social en milieu hospitalier auprès de personnes souffrant de problèmes psychiatriques.

This past July, Amethyst celebrated a milestone with the fifth anniversary of its most successful fundraising initiative, the Amethyst Track Challenge. This is Amethyst s most successful fundraising event of the year, commented Cynthia Waldmeier, Community Relations Coordinator for Amethyst. With this being the fifth year of the event, we were thrilled to host the largest number of competitors to date. We received a lot of positive feedback from past participants, and hope that the event can continue to grow in the coming years. Since 2008, the Track Challenge has raised over $150,000 for Amethyst s many important programs which benefit the women in the Ottawa community who are most deserving of assistance. The continued involvement of all of the event s Amethyst Counsellor Nadine Letang accepts the 2012 Track Challenge cheque at the July 11 th event. key sponsors, specifically the Masha Krupp Translation Group Ltd. is incredibly encouraging, continued Waldmeier. This event continues to grow in popularity each year, and we are excited to see how it moves forward in 2013! Otto s BMW remporte la première place lors de la cinquième édition annuelle du Défi d athlétisme d Amethyst En juillet dernier, Amethyst a célébré le cinquième anniversaire du Défi d athlétisme qui constitue l initiative de financement la plus réussie du Centre. «Il s agit de l activité de financement d Amethyst qui remporte le plus de succès chaque année, a déclaré la collectivité d Amethyst. Dans le cadre du cinquième anniversaire, nous avons été très heureux de constater que l événement a permis d accueillir le plus grand nombre de participants à ce jour. Nous avons reçu de nombreux commentaires positifs de la part d anciens participants, et nous espérons que l événement gagnera en popularité au cours des prochaines années.» Depuis 2008, le Défi d athlétisme a permis d amasser plus de $. Ces fonds ont été versés à de nombreux programmes importants d Amethyst qui profitent aux femmes d Ottawa ayant le plus besoin d aide. «La participation continue des principaux commanditaires, plus particulièrement Le Groupe de traduction Masha Krupp limitée (GTMK), est extrêmement encourageante, a ajouté M me Waldmeier.
