In 1603 James I st became King of England. Protestants and Catholics had been fighting for years. A Catholic man called Robert Catesby decided to do something. He met with 5 men. One was called Guy Fawkes. Robert Catesby wanted to kill the King and his Parliament. He decided to blow up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder. So he and the others rented a building next to the Parliament buildings. They dug tunnels under the buildings to get into the cellars. Many conspirators joined them in their plot to blow up Parliament. They eventually rented another cellar underneath the House of Lords. They stored thirty-six barrels of gunpowder in the cellar. They wanted the explosion to cause a lot of damage. The plot was to blow up the House of Lords on November 5 th 1605, when the King was going to open Parliament. But the plot was discovered and Guy Fawkes was captured and arrested. He was taken to prison and executed in January The other plotters were finally arrested and they were executed too. The members of Parliament were very happy that they were not dead. So a new law was passed to celebrate November 5 th. Nowadays, English people celebrate Bonfire Night with fireworks and bonfires. 6 Transcript for the listening comprehension test: Hello, my name is Sally. I come from England. Every year on the 5 th of November, we celebrate Bonfire Night. Bonfire Night is the celebration of the death of a man called Guy Fawkes. Guy Fawkes was born on the 13 th of April And on the 5 th of November 1605, he came up with a plot to kill the queen. Every year on the 5 th of November, children all around England make men that look like Guy Fawkes and put them on a bonfire - a big fire in the middle of a field- and we light fireworks and watch them.
