FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE "OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS EARN NATIONAL RECOGNITION Toronto, ON, March 9, 2012 What do Lisa Hodgins of Assiniboine Community College and Laura Pittman of Memorial University of Newfoundland have in common? They are both winners of the 2011 Canadian Association of Co-operative Education s (CAFCE) Co-op Student of the Year award. Lisa Hodgins, a second year student at Assiniboine Community College studying in Environmental Technology: Land and Water Specialization, has consistently been an honours student, while working part-time and volunteering for worthwhile causes throughout the City of Brandon and surrounding communities. Ms. Hodgins completed her Co-op Work Term at the Canadian Center of Inland Waters in Burlington, Ontario and received extremely high recognition from her employer and co-op coordinator. Ms. Hodgins was raised in the small agriculture community of Melita, Manitoba. Prior to starting college, she travelled extensively doing humanitarian work in developing countries. Ms. Hodgins will be enrolling in Environmental Sciences after graduating from college this year. Laura Pittman, winner of the university 2011 CAFCE Co-op Student of the Year Award, is a 5th year Mechanical Engineering student at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Ms. Pittman held a Work Term with Shell Canada s Deep Basin Drilling Team from May through August 2011, under the mentorship and supervision of Mr. Ken Anderson, P. Eng. and Mr. Vittorio Spoldi, P. Eng. Ms. Pittman s main project was to complete a competitor study of horizontal wells in the Deep Basin East area. Her original scope included an analysis of competitor designs and practices, and this was expanded to include the analysis of Time and Cost Performance. The future cost savings per well resulting from Laura s work will result in considerable financial benefits for Shell. Ms. Pittman, who was thrilled to receive the award, had this to say: "While it is always gratifying to be recognized for the hard work and dedication I've devoted to my education, what means the most to me is the potential impact it has on future engineering co-op students. I am optimistic that this award can bring additional recognition to importance of cooperative education, the quality of students that attend Memorial and, in particular, the quality of engineering students. To get where I am today takes a great deal of focus, determination and hard work. However, I could not have done it alone. I am fortunate to always have great support from my family, my mentors while completing my work terms and, of course, the faculty and staff within engineering and cooperative education at Memorial."

2 Dr. Geoff Smith, Co-operative Engineering Co-ordinator at Memorial, nominated Ms. Pittman for the CAFCE Co-Op Student of the Year Award. He admires Ms. Pittman s discipline and time management skills, which have permitted her to maintain an elite academic standing while competing in varsity soccer and participating prominently with the Memorial Engineering Student Society, She is a wonderful role model, a credit to the Engineering Co-op program at Memorial, and she will be a valuable contributor to the Engineering profession. This is the first time a Memorial student has received this award. It is a major achievement and a huge recognition for the quality and success of our students and programs said Dr. Peter Rans, director of Cooperative Education. Dr. Ramachandran Venkatesan, Dean pro-tempore of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science echoed the sentiments of both Ms. Pittman and Dr. Rans, adding that Laura s achievement is truly noteworthy. A national award is a significant recognition. Employers often tell us how pleased they are with Memorial s engineering work term students. This recognition in an elite competition highlights the high quality of our students. This is a proud moment for all of us in the faculty of engineering. In addition to receiving a $500 cash award from CAFCE with a certificate to commemorate their achievements, Lisa Hodgins and Laura Pittman will each receive the $500 Emery-Dufault Award in recognition of the contributions of two of the founding members of co-operative education in Canada, Dr. Charles Leslie (Les) Emery and Professor George Joseph Dufault. Each year CAFCE recognizes outstanding co-op student achievement from both the college and university level. Co-op offices across Canada will be celebrating this and other co-op initiatives during National Cooperative Education Week, March 19-23, co-operative education students were nominated this year from a pool of candidates of more than 80,000 students studying at 78 CAFCE member institutions across Canada. Lisa Hodgins, est étudiante de deuxième année en Technique de l'environnement, spécialisation Sol et Eau, au Collège Communautaire Assiniboine (ACC). Pendant ses études au college, Lisa a travaillé à temps partiel et bénévolement à Brandon et dans des communautés environnantes à différentes causes utiles et louables, tout en se distinguant académiquement. Lisa a complété son placement coopératif (stage) à Burlington en Ontario, au Centre Canadien des Eaux Intérieures et a été reconnu, avec distinction, par son employeur et le coordinateur de son placement coopératif. Lisa a été élevé dans la petite communauté agricole de Melita, au Manitoba. Après son départ de sa communauté et avant de venir étudier au collège, elle a beaucoup voyagé tout en faisant du travail humanitaire dans des pays en voie de développement. Lisa espère s'inscrire en Sciences de l'environnement après avoir complété son diplôme cette année. Laura Pittman, gagnant de le 2011 CAFCE Co-op étudiant de l'année, est un étudiant en 5ème année génie mécanique à l'université Memorial de Terre-Neuve. Mme Pittman a tenu une durée de travail chez Shell Canada de l'équipe de forage Deep Basin de Mai à Août 2011, sous le mentorat et la supervision de M. Ken Anderson, P. Eng. et M. Vittorio Spoldi, P. Eng. Principal du projet Mme Pittman était de réaliser une étude de concurrent de puits horizontaux dans la zone Deep Basin-L Est. Son champ d'application initial comprenait une analyse des conceptions et des pratiques des concurrents, et cela a été élargi pour inclure l'analyse du temps et de performance des coûts. Les économies de coûts futurs par puits résultant des travaux de Laura se traduira par des avantages financiers considérables pour Shell. Mme Pittman, qui a été ravie de recevoir le prix, avait ceci à dire: "Bien qu'il soit toujours gratifiant d'être reconnu pour le travail acharné et le dévouement que j'ai consacrée à mon éducation, ce qui signifie le plus pour moi, c'est l'impact potentiel qu'elle a sur l'avenir du génie étudiants co-op. Je suis optimiste que ce prix peut apporter une reconnaissance supplémentaire de l'importance de l'éducation coopérative, la qualité des étudiants qui fréquentent Memorial et, en particulier, la qualité d'étudiants en génie. Pour en arriver là où je suis aujourd'hui prend beaucoup de concentration, la détermination et le travail acharné. Cependant, je ne pouvais pas pu y arriver seuls. J'ai la chance d'avoir toujours un grand soutien de ma famille, mes mentors tout en complétant mes conditions de travail et, bien

4 sûr, le corps professoral et du personnel au sein d'ingénierie et de l'éducation coopérative à l'université Memorial. " M. Geoff Smith, Co-operative Engineering Co-ordinator à l'université Memorial, a désigné Mme Pittman pour la CAFCE Co-Op étudiant de l'année. Il admire la discipline Mme Pittman et les compétences de gestion du temps, qui lui ont permis de maintenir un statut élite universitaire, tout en rivalisant en soccer et participe en bonne place avec la Memorial Society Elève ingénieur, "Elle est un modèle merveilleux, un crédit à l'engineering Co -op programme à l'université Memorial, et elle sera une contribution précieuse à la profession d'ingénieur. " "C'est la première fois un étudiant Memorial a reçu ce prix. Il s'agit d'une réalisation majeure et une reconnaissance énorme pour la qualité et la réussite de nos élèves et des programmes», a déclaré le Dr Peter Rans, directeur de l'éducation coopérative. Le Dr Ramachandran Venkatesan, doyen pro-tempore de la Faculté de génie et sciences appliquées fait l'écho des sentiments des deux Mme Pittman et Dr. Rans, ajoutant que "la réalisation de Laura est vraiment remarquable. Un prix national est une reconnaissance importante. Les employeurs nous disent souvent combien ils sont contents avec les étudiants en génie de Memorial terme de travail. Cette reconnaissance dans une compétition d'élite met en évidence la grande qualité de nos étudiants. Il s'agit d'un moment de fierté pour nous tous dans la faculté de génie. " En plus de recevoir un certificat de l ACDEC en reconnaissance de leurs réalisations, Lisa Hodgins et Laura Pittman recevront chacun le Prix Emery-Dufault d une valeur de 500 $, prix attribué pour la contribution de deux des fondateurs de l enseignement coopératif au Canada, Charles Leslie (Les) Emery, Ph. D., et le professeur George Joseph Dufault, en plus d un prix ACDEC d une valeur de 500 $. L ACDEC récompense annuellement les réalisations des étudiants inscrits au régime coopératif aux niveaux collégial et universitaire. La Semaine de l enseignement coopératif, qui se déroulera du 19 au 23 mars 2011, donnera l occasion aux personnes œuvrant dans l enseignement coopératif au Canada de célébrer non seulement l attribution de ces prix, mais aussi plusieurs autres réalisations dans le domaine de l enseignement coopératif. Cette année, il y a eu 30 étudiantes et étudiants qui ont été mis en nomination parmi plus de étudiants fréquentant 78 institutions membres de l ACDEC à travers le Canada. Des mentions honorables ont été décernées à Sophia So Yeon Kim de l'université de la Colombie-Britannique ((baccalauréat ès arts, économie et relations internationales) et Erica Parson du Camosun College (Hôtel et restaurant diplôme en gestion).
