3 4 Montreal Canadiens Children s Foundation Presentation Montreal Canadiens Children s Foundation Presentation 5 A word from the Chairman a dedicated board of directors Carrying the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club banner comes with many important responsibilities. There is, of course, the sense of belonging. There is pride and there is honour. The Canadiens symbol is ASSociated with prestige and hope. It is respected and synonymous with trust and success. When you are affiliated with the Montreal Canadiens, it means THAT you are PART of a team THAT is DEDICATED to being the best in professional hockey. The mission statement of the Montreal Canadiens Children s Foundation proudly mirrors the spirit of the Hockey Club. We mobilize the resources of this outstanding organization and work with the community to offer a brighter future and good health to children in need. Our efforts are motivated by our firm desire to be a leader in the field and to have a significant and longstanding impact on the lives of these young people. Our actions serve to underline the commitment that we have collectively undertaken to positively contribute to their health and well-being. Since its inception in August 2000, the Foundation has donated more than $15 million to charitable organizations supporting the well-being of some of the most vulnerable kids across the province of Quebec. The Foundation s number-one goal is to encourage children to embrace a healthier lifestyle through physical activity and better eating habits. Thanks to the introduction of our BLEU BLANC BOUGE program in 2009, we have been able to answer the need for quality sports facilities in the city s less privileged neighbourhoods. These multi-purpose outdoor ice rinks have made it possible for a large number of children to enjoy a state-of-the-art facility while engaging in healthy physical activity. Since 2009, we have introduced four of these rinks to the communities of St-Michel, Montreal North, Verdun and LaSalle. This coming winter, a fifth BLEU BLANC BOUGE rink will be unveiled at Confederation Park in the Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough. But the Foundation isn t done yet. We are already preparing to bring this program to areas outside Montreal. When not bringing ice rinks to needy neighbourhoods, the Foundation is also busy supporting the efforts of hundreds of community groups throughout the four corners of Quebec that work with youth and offer programs that embrace a healthy lifestyle. We are very proud to be working together with the community and sharing one important goal: the well-being of underprivileged children. But we are not alone. We are supported by the generosity of exceptional partners, dedicated donors and committed volunteers all of whom help in allowing the Foundation to raise the funds necessary and to meet our objectives that, in turn, allow us to meet increasing demands for help. executive Pierre Boivin O.C., President and CEO, Claridge inc. BLEU BLANC BOUGE Children in the BLEU BLANC BOUGE communities learn the basics of skating. community rinks In 2008, the Foundation launched the BLEU BLANC BOUGE program an initiative aimed at offering a unique and permanent recreational place to meet the needs of less privileged communities. This program supports efforts by local organizations and fits with the Foundation s goal to work together with community groups to assist youth and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle. At the top of the list are elementary and secondary schools, which offer a host of supervised ACTIvities. Montreal borough committees also work closely with the Foundation in offering their facilities to their citizens. Inauguration of the 4 th BLEU BLANC BOUGE rink at Hayward Park in the LaSalle borough. David Desharnais enjoyed skating with children during the opening ceremonies of the LaSalle BLEU BLANC BOUGE rink. BLEU BLANC BOUGE community rinks The BLEU BLANC BOUGE program consists of building outdoor multi-purpose refrigerated ice rinks for generations to come. These rinks make it possible for a large number of children to enjoy a state-of-the-art facility while engaging in healthy physical activities. Built according to NHL standards, the infrastructure provides the necessary versatility for other sports to be played according to the time of year. Predominantly used for ice hockey from November to mid-march, the rinks become an ideal playground for disciplines such as basketball, soccer, ball hockey and other types of games during the spring, summer and fall months. The success of the BLEU BLANC BOUGE program comes from the dedication and drive of community organizers at various levels business people, local community groups, schools, volunteers, companies and the City of Montreal s borough divisions involved in the program. The Montreal Canadiens Children s Foundation is proud to team up with all of these players to offer a truly unique program that contributes to the quality of life and health of thousands of children. BLEU BLANC BOUGE s fourth rink was inaugurated in January 2011 at Hayward Park in the Montreal borough of LaSalle. The event featured numerous dignitaries, members of the Canadiens organization and many children from the neighbourhood. Construction of the fifth BLEU BLANC BOUGE rink is currently under way at Confederation Park in the city s Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough. The Foundation provides leadership for this initiative, which gives elementary school children a chance to embrace ice skating activities in a supervised framework that fosters a healthy lifestyle, socialization and teamwork all offered in a safe environment. Participants are first- and second-grade school children. Last season, hockey clinics were held for 120 students from Saint-Bernardin (St-Michel), Jules-Verne (Montreal North) and Levy-Sauvé (Verdun) schools. Endorsed by Hockey Canada and Hockey Québec, the Foundation works with experienced coaches for a period of six weeks, teaching kids about the basics of hockey and skating, all of it done in a constructive and fun environment. All rinks are well equipped, with helmets and hockey sticks available for every participant. My neighbourhood, my rink : A study by the GREF The Groupe de recherche sur les espaces festifs (GREF) teamed up with Québec en Forme and l Université du Québec à Montréal to evaluate and analyze BLEU BLANC BOUGE s impact on the borough of Montreal North. The study, dubbed Mon quartier, ma patinoire (My neighbourhood, my rink), examined the effects of local access to sports infrastructures on a community. Spanning 20 months (between October and May 2012), the analysis revealed the following: - The rink has become a gathering place for children who enjoy playing winter sports with their parents and friends. More than 58 % of children aged 6 to 11 come to the rink with their families, and 70 % of adolescents come with their friends. - The rink is the ideal place to discover or rediscover a winter sport. More than 80 % of kids prefer a day that features outdoor ice skating. The rink is the main point of destination for winter sports among 73 % of children. - The rink plays an important role in the improvement of a healthy lifestyle. Since the rink was introduced, more than 58 % of children said they spent less time in front of the TV or the computer. More than 77 % of the kids said they were skating more. Asked about the benefits of using the rink, 84 % of kids said they felt healthier. Campaigns and events Whether it s a Foundation initiative or one suggested by a corporate partner, the Montreal Canadiens Children s Foundation is closely involved with various fundraising events that provide wide public exposure. As a proud member of the Montreal Canadiens family, the Foundation can count on many Habs sponsors and friends, while tapping into the organization s vast wealth of resources. Montreal Canadiens Alumni participated in a friendly game with some kids at the 1 st Street Hockey Tournament to benefit the Foundation and the YM-YWHA. Charity street hockey tournament On May 20 and 21, 2012, the Foundation and the YM-YWHA joined forces and hosted their first charity street hockey tournament in the Côte-des-Neiges district, raising $305,000. The event featured Patrice Brisebois and the tournament s honorary co-president, Robert Oringer, as well as president of the event, Steve Stotland. The two-day tournament saw plenty of ball hockey action, lots of fun and laughter among the many participants and a tremendous show of generosity shown by donors and sponsors, as well as support from a team of outstanding volunteers. The tourney allowed kids and adults to show off their hockey prowess. A total of 14 teams participated in the youth category, while 28 teams took part in the adult division. Several former Habs were also on hand during the second day of the event to play a friendly game against a team of youngsters. how can i help the foundation The second annual charity street hockey game will be held in Côte-des-Neiges in Teams will be able to register as early as fall 2012 by accessing the event s website at streethockeyderue.org. This is an event not to be missed! Habs Fans are Gold The Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club is privileged to have the most loyal fans in the world of sport. The support shown by these fans is exemplified by their generosity from the very moment when the first puck is dropped at the start of the season, throughout the season, during each game at the Bell Centre. Last season, a fundraising campaign among season ticketholders proved to be a windfall for the Foundation, which collected $347,457 for the construction of the fourth BLEU BLANC BOUGE rink in the LaSalle borough. Fans also rallied around the cause by purchasing lottery tickets, bidding for hockey memorabilia during silent auctions, and participating in a new lottery called Lotricolore, with a pair of tickets for the Canadiens season as grand prize. Others chose to make a donation to the Foundation, allowing a child to enjoy a ride aboard the Zamboni or to display birthday greetings on the Jumbotron. These efforts helped the Foundation raise $202,907. Chef Ricardo and Habs spouses cook up a unique idea Last season, the Foundation had the pleasure of taking part in a unique project that brought together four themes that are close to the Foundation s heart: hockey, cooking, family and health. The ingredients: enthusiastic and dedicated women, a fine chef with a generous experienced and inventive staff, and a worthy and engaging cause. The idea was to assemble a collection of players favourite family food recipes a project initiated by Travis Moen s spouse, Amy. Popular chef Ricardo and the Ricardo Media team were approached, and soon the Foundation, along with players wives were hard at work putting together a truly unique and high-quality magazine. Cuisiner avec les Canadiens (Cooking with the Canadiens) was divided up into different sections, each representing the lifestyles of Habs players and their relationship with food. The result was a magazine that spotlights details about what Canadiens players eat, their families tastes, vacations and how they host dinner events. The magazine also looked at what the players ate when they were kids (featuring photos), while offering chef Ricardo s tasty finger food suggestions for those hardcore Habs fans who loyally follow the games on TV from the comfort of their living rooms. More than 22,000 copies of the publication were sold and Ricardo Media donated the total proceeds of $50,000 to the Foundation. Dedicated sponsors Corporate sponsors of the Montreal Canadiens often go beyond the call of duty when it comes to raising funds to help kids in need, and they do so through the Foundation. One such example is Clorox, which introduced a campaign that featured Habs star goalie Carey Price. Clorox announced that it would write a cheque to the Foundation for every shutout recorded by Price during the season. The company went a step further by holding a contest and inviting fans to bid during a silent online auction. Up for grabs was Price s goalie mask, which featured a design painted by a fan, and worn by Price during the March 3, 2012 game. The successful contest resulted in Clorox raising $18,000 for the Foundation. Another corporate sponsor, McDonald s Canada, teamed up with the Foundation in November 2011 to turn the Bell Centre into a fan s fantasy camp as part of FestiFan, a day that featured skills competitions, contests, autograph sessions with current and former Habs players, team dressing room tours, as well as a display of some of the most celebrated NHL awards, including the venerated Stanley Cup. This is a day that had all the elements to put smiles on the faces of hockey fans, young and old alike. The popular Cage aux Sports restaurant chain is also a major Habs sponsor and loyal contributor to the Foundation. Each year, Cage aux Sports donates a portion of its golf tournament profits to the Foundation. Carey Price wore a mask designed by a fan as part of a contest presented by Clorox. Hundreds of children attended the FestiFan at the Bell Centre. As part of this tournament, Patrice Brisebois sponsored a kids team from Saint-Michel.

10 18 Montreal Canadiens Children s Foundation Fundraising Montreal Canadiens Children s Foundation Fundraising 19 Students from Trafalgar School organized a hockey-themed event to raise funds for children. Accompanied by Eric Lamarre of ClubLink, Yvan Cournoyer and his wife Evelyn were proud to donate the profits of his golf tournament to Robert Sirois, board member of the Foundation. Third party initiatives to support the Foundation More and more, the Foundation is pleased to be able to count on the support of the team s many fans, friends and youth groups, who organize original and varied fundraising events every year. In 2003, Canadiens legend Yvan Cournoyer announced that proceeds from his celebrity golf classic a popular tournament organized with ClubLink and held at the Fontainebleau golf club would go to a worthy cause, such as the Foundation. The 10th annual tournament was held in August 2011 and featured many former Canadiens greats and NHL players. Since 2003, the event has raised close to $350,000 for the Foundation. Other golf tournaments have also greatly assisted the cause of children in need. These tournaments have been hosted by such generous companies as ZCL Composites, Selwyn House, Les Vergers Leahy, the National Bank of Canada and the Club athlétique du Mont-Royal (they actually held a winter golf tournament!) and raised over $51,000 through foursomes, sponsorships, auctions and draws. Daniel and Joy are two individuals whose story has been an inspiration to children in need. On September 17, 2011, they got married. What makes their story unique is that they tied the knot in front of their family, friends, and thousands of children who receive help from the Foundation. They even took it a step further. Their wedding took place at the Bell Centre the place where Daniel first asked for his bride s hand. The two Habs fan-atics generously made a donation to the Foundation on behalf of themselves and their wedding entourage. On October 6, 2011, as the Canadiens embarked on their 102nd season by facing the Toronto Maple Leafs, Taylor Yankowski decided to find a clever way of sensitizing people to the plight of children in need. Yankowski organized a fundraising event, which allowed Habs fans to watch the game live on the big screen at the Colisée Kirkland theatre an exciting initiative which raised $3,600 for the Foundation. Later in the NHL season, Canadiens forward Mathieu Darche led a public-awareness campaign, appearing in a ConsignACTION video. The segments were broadcast in January and February on RDS and on the Internet. The campaign helped raise $15,000 for the Foundation. Champlain College students also got into the fundraising act last spring. The Sports Management and Marketing program students held a special event called the Champlain Cup, which featured flag football, soccer and hockey. Held on March 30 and April 7 at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard, the event raised $3,331 for the Foundation. Meanwhile, in east-end Anjou, students held a special four-onfour ball hockey tournament in March. Registration fees, sponsorships and proceeds from a draw and food sales were all donated to the Foundation. Congratulations to all organizers and participants, and a heartfelt thank you! HOW CAN I HELP THE Foundation Q. I would like to organize a fundraising event for the Foundation. How do I get started? A. The Foundation is pleased to support individuals efforts to raise funds on its behalf. Please the Foundation at fondation@ canadiens.com and write FUNDRAISING in the s subject tag line. Aware of the importance of health and the role they play in children s imaginations, the Montreal Canadiens players are happy to visit every year around 350 young patients at CHU Sainte-Justine and the Montreal Children s Hospital. On December 7, players were divided into two groups to meet the greatest number of children possible and shared precious moments with their young supporters. The Montreal Canadiens Annual Blood Clinic For 30 years, the Montreal Canadiens have invited their supporters and the public to donate blood. Introduced by Jean Beliveau and Claude Mouton in 1981 to help the Red Cross, the organization responsible AT the time for the blood supply in Québec, the clinic is organized for the benefit of Hema-Quebec since Meetings are held in the rooms and in the corridors. One feels restlessness about this visit, most awaited by children and their parents. Despite the illness, pain and hardships to overcome, they show their best smile. For players, emotions run high. Some of them are parents and cannot help but have a good thoughts and encouragement for the moms and the dads who have to deal with the illness of their child and support them in these difficult times. This season, the event presented in November 2011 yielded 664 blood donations, which corresponds to two thirds of the daily needs of Hema-Quebec. The presence of the Canadiens players encourages many people to come to the Salle des pas perdus of the Windsor Station and contribute to maintaining the blood bank to meet the needs of the community. Indeed, the players of the team take turns to meet and thank the donors for their generosity, in addition to signing autographs and to take photos with everyone, much to the delight of those present. Several members of the Canadiens Alumni and inimitable Youppi! were also on site. In addition, in recent years, Canadians can count on the collaboration of RDS which promotes and covers the event, in addition to being represented by numerous personalities who offer gifts and meet donors throughout the day. Team work that serves the community well! Yannick Weber A special experience for young Stavros Stavros is 11 years old and suffers from Friedreich s ataxia. This rare genetic condition that affects the heart and muscles was diagnosed in 2010 and unfortunately we know him no cure. Huge Canadiens fan, Stavros dreams of playing hockey but his condition prevents him from engaging in any physical activity. This year, he was appointed ambassador to the Montreal Children s Hospital for the Canadiens visit. In this capacity, he accompanied and guided the players throughout their visit with young patients. He has also participated in numerous interviews for television and radio. On October 2, the organization contributed to the Run for the Cure to benefit the Breast Cancer Foundation of Quebec with the presence of the team mascot Youppi! and by offering prizes for the participants. Thanks to the dynamism of 30,000 runners and walkers present for the Montreal event, 2.6 million dollars were raised for the cause. A few days later, other Habs prizes were offered to encourage 2,500 walkers gathered at Parc Jean Drapeau for the Light The Night Walk to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. To recognize the courage of those who engaged in a daily battle against cancer, the Canadiens dedicated the October 15 game to the many children, members of Leucan, an association that promotes wellness, healing and recovery of children with cancer and supports their families. Over 60 young people and their parents were welcomed at the Directors Lounge of the Bell Centre for a pre game reception before attending the game between the Canadiens and the Colorado Avalanche, courtesy of generous corporate suite owners.this fun-filled evening began with a pre game reception where guests had the opportunity to meet the president and owner of the Canadiens, Geoff Molson and his wife Kate, former players of the organization such as Rejean Houle, Marc Denis and Mario Tremblay, RDS family members such as Alain Crête and Pierre Houde, as well as the players wives and girlfriends. They shared laughs and stories with all children in addition to giving each a gift in memory of their visit. This was the perfect opportunity to make the presentation of a gift of $5,000 to Leucan, on behalf of the NHL and the Hockey Fights Cancer campaign. Among the elements of awareness implemented for the evening were the lavender ties worn by the organization s management and coaching staff, and the RDS team. Also, young flag bearers on the ice during player introductions were both members of Leucan. Other young guests attended interviews live on 98.5 Sports, RDS and TSN Radio 990. Finally a few children had the opportunity to take a Zamboni ride in the pre game and during intermissions. Once the game was over, a big surprise awaited the children then gathered at the Jacques Beauchamp Press Lounge. While Youppi! took advantage of the moment to entertain the guests of the evening, goaltender Carey Price and his teammates Chris Campoli, Mathieu Darche and Tomas Plekanec showed up at the media lounge for a special meeting with young people. The players took the time to answer the children s questions, take pictures with everyone and sign numerous autographs. What a great way to end an evening! Children and parents left the Bell Centre with eyes sparkling and delight. Two weeks later, a special invitation allowed a dozen children of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada to attend the Canadiens game in the suite Les Amis de Scott & Brian. Youppi! visited the kids and gifts for all completed a memorable night for these young people and representatives of the organization. Children and parents enjoyed their evening at the Bell Centre. These awards are given annually to students who exemplify EXCEllent on-ice achievements and scholastic results. Students of Mrs. Johanne Goyette are proud to learn with the program. The Program Launched in fall 2007, School is a program that provides free educational tools on the theme of hockey for teachers of the first grade through high school 3. More than 200 educational activities, based on the curriculum criteria established by the Ministère de l éducation, du loisir et du sport du Québec, are available on the site. featuring the Legends of the Montreal Canadiens and current Canadiens, this Jocelyn Proteau, Guy Lafleur, Monique Dépatie and Mathieu Darche with the recipients. resource does not fail to capture the attention of students and add fun in the classroom learning. Subjects included in the programme are French, English, mathematics, arts, personal development and physical education. After five years of existence, the program is now used in all 72 Québec School Boards. At the end of the last school year, 8,865 teachers were enrolled and had used the program to educate more than 385,000 students in over 2,252 elementary and secondary schools in the province. A survey of teachers confirmed that the leaflets of this program are of high quality, with a difficulty level suited to the academic curriculum, and contribute positively to the teaching of subjects. Among the most popular activities, we find in langauges, illustrated stories and biographies of players, and in mathematics, statistics of players who have marked the history of the Canadiens. Parents of kids learning with the program are not left behind. They will find on the website tools to support their children in achieving their homework and school work, as well as ideas to encourage the whole family to be active and adopt healthy life habits. Feedback from the teachers on the program and its impact in the classroom The interest of boys increased significantly in class in all subjects. The program inspires many boys and motivates them to persevere when facing reading difficulties. In my role as a teacher, I have to include topics that interest my students and expose them to our culture and activities outlined in our community... this program allows me to reach this goal. Thank you for your involvement in the education of our youth. For us teachers, such resources improve the quality of our teaching. Thank you for making your program accessible and interesting. The program was introduced in 1985 with the objective of encouraging sports and academic excellence for players competing in all three major amateur hockey leagues in the province of Quebec; the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), member schools of the Canadian Interuniversity Sports in Quebec (CIS) and the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League (QJAAAL). Honorees are selected by a jury made of representatives from the sports media, the hockey and education communities. 15 28 the canadiens in the community Events and Programs the canadiens in the community Events and Programs 29 Brian Gionta About the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence The Foundation s main objective is to provide financial support to performing studentathletes who also distinguish themselves in class and help them strive towards excellence as young role models in the Quebec society. Over the last five years, the Foundation has handed out over $3.4 million in scholarships to deserving student-athletes, with the objective of increasing its annual scholarship amount to $1 million within the period of Montreal Canadiens Skate Drive On February 19, 2012, the Montreal Canadiens held their annual collect of new and used skates at the Bell Centre before the game between the Canadiens to the New Jersey Devils. This community initiative organized in collaboration with Sun Life Financial helps fill the need of several local charities and youngsters for sports equipment. Montreal Canadiens Scholarship Program th The Montreal Canadiens presented their 5 annual bursary ceremony within their Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence bursary program. In 2008, the Montreal Canadiens announced a three-year investment totalling $100,000 towards the Foundation a donation THAT allowed the organization to CREATE a program to support men and women s ice hockey. A year ago, the Canadiens announced their renewed partnership with the Foundation, with a donation of $250,000 to the organization, spread out over five years (2010 to 2015), at $50,000 per year. Hence, on January , the Montreal Canadiens captain Brian Gionta presented twenty-eight $1,500 scholarships to hockey players between 14 and 17 years of age. Eight of the scholarships were given to female hockey players from Quebec s provincial squad who are seeking to join the Canadian national team, while twenty scholarships were handed out to Midget AAA League players. The awards ceremony was held at the Bell Centre prior to the game between the Canadiens and the visiting Detroit Red Wings. This year, a new addition was made to the Montreal Canadiens Bursary Program. Seven academic excellence bursaries were awarded to studentathletes in hockey who achieved impressive academic results. The 21 other bursary recipients received a scholarship for their athletic excellence. A reminder that scholastic performance is an important eligibility criteria to better prepare students for a post-athletic career. Recipients for 2012 were selected based on their athletic excellence and for having pursued their secondary or post-secondary education. 16 30 the canadiens in the community Events and Programs the canadiens in the community Events and Programs 31 the goal is green! program In May 2007, the Montreal Canadiens organization embarked on what would become known as The Goal is Green! program, an ambitious and wide-ranging project to position the club at the forefront of all environmental leaders in professional sports. Through its mission, the program aims to reduce the organization s environmental footprint, support the greening of the environment and renewable resources, and encourage its fanbase to do the same. The LRF Program LEARN, RESPECT, FUN The Montreal Canadiens LRF Program, presented in collaboration with Hockey Quebec, aims to support and promote the growth and development of minor hockey in Quebec. The program is offered to all young Quebec hockey players, from Novice to Bantam. To participate, all players, parents and coaches of a team must agree to abide by and enforce the fundamental principles of the program: good behavior, fair values and sportsmanship. To achieve these goals, a comprehensive review of the Bell Centre s operations management was undertaken to identify the areas and processes in the facility that were falling short of environmental standards. Once the identified areas had been corrected or improved, the Bell Centre applied for and received three environmental certifications Ici on Recycle (Level 3), LEED-EB (Existing Building), and ISO the most of any venue in North America. Ici on recycle (Level 3) In May 2008, the Bell Centre received a level 3 certification by the Quebec government s Ici on Recycle program for recycling and composting 80% of the facility s residual waste. Since that time, the Bell Centre has increased the level to 85% (up from 25% prior to the launch of program), a figure which represents approximately 1,000 tons of residual waste that is recycled or composted by the Bell Centre on an annual basis. The Goal is Green! tons of bottles tons of reused beer casks tons of aluminum cans tons of other plastics, glass and metals tons of cardboard tons of wood tons of furniture tons of compostable materials LEED-EB (Existing Building) The Bell Centre received certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) on October 13, LEED is a thirdparty certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. To become certified, the Bell Centre had to meet 50 LEED criteria, which necessitated the following notable actions: - installing water efficient toilets and faucets to reduce water usage by 20% - implementing a policy whereby 80% of Bell Centre purchases are of recycled, re-used, or local materials. - Reducing carbon gas emissions by 28%. As a result of the changes made to the Bell Centre in order to become LEED certified, the venue became 35% more energy efficient than similar-type facilities throughout North America. iso The Bell Centre was certified ISO on November 16, The ISO is the world s most recognized framework for environmental management systems (EMS) that help organizations to both better manage the impact of their activities on the environment and to demonstrate sound environmental management. Fan-friendly Initiatives In addition to the organizational improvements implemented as part of the Goal is Green! program, the Montreal Canadiens have also made numerous improvements that impact the public, such as: - allocating three premiere Bell Centre parking spots for hybrid vehicles. - Changing the type of plastic used in all beer cups from a form that biodegraded in 1,000 years to a form that biodegrades within three months - installing 945 two- and three-way recycling bins throughout the Bell Centre concourses and offices - repurposing leftover concession and luxury suite food for distribution to local food banks; over 39 tons of food are donated annually to La Maison du Père and La Tablée des chefs, the equivalent of meals. Pierre Allard During the season, nearly 18,500 young people from more than 1,000 teams from all across Quebec committed to play hockey for fun, to learn and observe the rules of the game, respect their teammates, their coaches, officials, opponents and their supporters, and to remain in control of their emotions to prevent the game to become a violent sport. For their part, the coaches have also made the commitment to know and respect the rules of amateur hockey and to defend them at all times, and to educate their players to sportsmanship and to encourage and reward such behavior. In addition to the official kit given to all teams, the LRF program offers two main activities to its members: the Tim Hortons Coaching Day and the Esso Minor Hockey Festival. Teams also have the chance to win an invitation to attend a Canadiens practice at the Bell Centre during the season. Tim Hortons Coaching Day Some 850 coaches from all across Quebec, in categories pre-novice to bantam, received one day of training at the Bell Centre in September 2010, with the Montreal Canadiens coaching staff, as well as specialists from Hockey Quebec. Several topics were discussed, including goaltender coaching methods and how to improve several aspects of the game: basic skills, physical preparation and, decisionmaking and execution in one-on-one situations. Erik Cole Montreal Canadiens 3-on-3 league Movember Minor Hockey Development Programs and Initiatives THE WILL TO OFFER SUPPORT TO THE COMMUNITY As a professional hockey club, the Montreal Canadiens make it their duty to be actively involved in the development of hockey and encourage minor hockey players to pursue their dream. Tomorrow s professional hockey players are today s kids who play the game on rinks and ponds across the province and the Canadiens are proud to support them by offering a variety of opportunities to learn and progress. All members of the Montreal Canadiens organization, from senior management to players and their spouses, hockey coaches and support staff, ambassadors, Alumni and every employee, share the common goal of lending a helping hand to the community and make a difference in the lives of others. Montreal Canadiens Hockey School The Montreal Canadiens Hockey School is a summer camp that has helped more than 700 young people from Novice to Pee Wee to improve several aspects of their game, with valuable advice of coaches and consultants from the world of professional sports. This unique hockey experience helps young people learn while spending an unforgettable week at the Bell Sports Complex. The program intends to teach young players a sporting culture combining their natural abilities, respect and sportsmanship while encouraging their passion for this sport. The Canadiens school is divided into two components: Recreation, for children who love hockey and want a memorable experience in the presence of members of the Montreal Canadiens organization, and Elite, focusing more on developing individual skills. Montreal Canadiens Skills Camp These five half-day camps taking place at the Bell Centre are designed to help Atom and Pee Wee players to improve different aspects of their game including skating, puck handling, passing, throws and an overview of methods for off-ice training. During the last season, 440 youth participated enthusiastically to workouts and training sessions. Montreal Canadiens 3-on-3 League The summer season brought back the Montreal Canadiens 3-on-3 League at the Bell Sports Complex where 420 young people from Novice to Bantam competed for honors for 13 weeks between May and August. Inspired and dedicated team work throughout the season Filled with a sincere desire to contribute to the wellbeing of the community, members of the different departments of this organization are actively involved with various charitable endeavors. Whether it s about finding a cure for a disease, supporting research, alleviating the suffering or stamping out poverty, or encouraging healthier lifestyle, it s all about getting involved outside the ice. Among the significant initiatives of the year, the season started with the solidarity of the players wives and girlfriends in the air tragedy that decimated the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team. Through the LOVE FOR LOKOMOTIV campaign, they united their efforts with those of all the NHL teams players spouses to raise money and help the bereaved families. Fall then announced the return of the annual United Way campaign that brings together players, management and employees of the Club de hockey Canadien, evenko and the Bell Centre. Several employees have participated in the march of umbrellas in the streets of downtown Montreal to celebrate the launch of the campaign. More than $ were raised by the entire organization for the 2011 edition. November is now associated with Movember, an international initiative which aims to raise funds in support of men s health issues, particularly prostate cancer, and create awareness toward this cause. A dozen players on the team have sported mustaches and raised funds, among them were team captain Brian Gionta, Scott Gomez, Jaroslav Spacek, Raphael Diaz, Ryan White, P.K. Subban, Tomas Plekanec, David Desharnais, Mathieu Darche, Erik Cole, Josh Gorges, Hal Gill and Carey Price. Youppi! and employees of the organization also wore the mustache and MO HABS MO team colors t-shirts were created and sold to benefit the cause. Month of celebration, December is a good time to join efforts in favor of the poor. In support of the Grande Guignolée des Médias, the organization held its annual food drive prior to the game against the Vancouver Canucks on December 8. Fans were invited to bring non-perishable food items to the Bell Centre where they were collected by the players wives and volunteers from Moisson Montreal, Sun Youth and the Société Saint-Vincentde-Paul. All donations were subsequently given to these organizations to meet the needs of the Montreal community. The magic of Christmas was also present as the players and their spouses, as well as employees of the organization, contributed generously to Opération Père Noël, an initiative of Mr. Normand Brault, co-founder of this children s endeavor. This organization works in partnership with youth centers, CSSS, schools, and other community organizations that are linked to underprivileged families whose children may not receive a visit from Santa Claus. Thursday, December 15, wives wrapped together all the gifts they had bought for the kids, just before the game between the Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers.

Raphaël Diaz, Peter Budaj More than18,000 fans filledthe Bell Centre in the morning of Sunday, January 22to attend the Montreal Canadiens Practice by Metro. For the occasion, the team was greeted bythousands of fans of all ages. Thedoors opened at 8:30 am, which did not prevented supporters to massnear the Bell Centre as early as 7 am to get the best seats available to seetheir favorites in action. This annual event allowed spectatorsto see the players and observe their skills through various events andcompetitions: fastest skater (Lars Eller), shooting accuracy(tomas Kaberle), the most powerful shot (PKSubban). The session ended with a game four against four. At the heart of winter, the Montreal community was saddened by the death of the former Montreal Expos catcher Gary Carter. On February 19, the Canadiens paid tribute to the Kid with a special pre-game ceremony during which all players wore a CARTER 8 sweater for the warm-up period. For the occasion, team mascot Youppi! was in its Expos uniform. These jerseys, autographed by their respective players, have raised more than $30,000 in an online auction to benefit the Gary Carter Foundation. Tribute to the military Finally, we must emphasize the many postgame meet and greet conducted throughout the season between the Habs and children affected by serious illness or experiencing difficulties that seem insurmountable. Whether it is with the help of organizations such as the Children s Wish Foundation, Sunshine Foundation of Canada or the Make-a-wish Foundation, at the request of a center for pediatric care, a doctor or a close friend or member of the family, the organization is sensitive to the dreams of these children and wants to contribute to achieving them. Carey Price, Tomas Plekanec, Mathieu Darche, PK Subban, David Desharnais, Josh Gorges, Lars Eller, Scott Gomez, Hal Gill and Brian Gionta have all participated in this year meaningful and touching meetings. Tribute to the military During the last season, the Canadiens paid tribute to sixty soldiers during a game on January 31 at the Bell Centre. For the occasion, the guests had the opportunity to meet with Réjean Houle and Geoff Molson. The organization recognizes the courage and commitment of soldiers from Quebec and supports its players initiatives in this regard. Every game of the season, the organization recognized the presence of the military guests in the Cammy s Heroes Program, established in the fall of 2009 by Michael Cammalleri. Also, throughout the month of November 2011, Carey Price wore a mask specially decorated to honor veterans and the Canadian Forces. Sold at auction, this mask has raised $ for Wounded Warriors and the Canadian Forces. Players and their charitable foundations Beyond team activities, the players invest time and energy in causes that are dear to them. In November 2011, Max Pacioretty announced the establishment of a foundation that bears his name and whose primary objective is to help the Foundation of the Montreal General Hospital to raise funds for the acquisition of magnetic resonance imaging apparatus for the Cranio-cerebral Trauma Center at the MUHC/Montreal General Hospital, a world leader in the research and treatment of concussions. Other players in the organization also established in their careers Foundations to give back to their community. Among these, the Erik Cole Dream Big Foundation, which promotes the development of minor hockey in North Carolina and that helps children with cancer and other diseases, and the Scotty Gomez Foundation which provides opportunities and support for young hockey players in Alaska. The Montreal Canadiens Alumni The Montreal Canadiens Alumni Association can count on five ambassadors - Jean Béliveau, Guy Lafleur, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer and Réjean Houle - and more than 200 active members. These former players who contributed to making the Canadiens the greatest team in the history of the NHL, continue this tradition and desire for excellence by offering annually more than 2,000 hours in more than 300 appearances with various community initiatives throughout Quebec. evenko Max Pacioretty, Geoff Molson Le Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie For the fourth consecutive year, the Canadiens participated in the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie, a spectacular bike marathon during which 180 teams of 4 or 5 cyclists ride over 1,000 km in a route that leads from the Saguenay to Montreal, through the various regions of Quebec. All profits generated by this initiative are donated to the Fondation GO to support research into hereditary orphan diseases and projects that promote healthy lifestyles. In addition, each cycling team is invited to sponsor one or more elementary schools of their choice to encourage them to enter the contest Lève-toi et bouge. In return, the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie gives these sponsored schools donations raised by their respective teams beyond their registration fee. This 1,000 km is much more than a single sporting achievement. It is an event that brings hope to all young people and their families, inviting them to take control of their health and for all those affected by a hereditary orphan. It is also a mobilizing project for thousands of students from Quebec who take part in the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie during the school year. Together, the six Canadiens teams which included David Desharnais and former players Sébastien Bordeleau, Patrice Brisebois, Guy Carbonneau and Stéphane Quintal, rode their bike with heart and determination for nearly 60 hours. Their efforts have raised more than $180,000, shared between the Fondation GO and 16 elementary schools in Montreal.
