3 LE MOT DE LA DIRECTION Bienvenue à la deuxième édition de notre Rétrospective annuelle. Que vous soyez parent, employé, partenaire, ami ou simplement intéressé par Haut-Lac, nous espérons que vous aurez plaisir à lire ce résumé de l année Ayant passé 18 mois à préparer la visite d accréditation par des représentants du Council of International Schools, nous attendions avec impatience le résultat. La décision est tombée en mai 2012 lorsque le comité exécutif du CIS nous a annoncé sa décision d accréditer Haut-Lac Ecole Internationale Bilingue avec effet immédiat. Cette accréditation est une belle réussite pour nous, notre personnel et toute la communauté. Nos sincères remerciements réitérés vont à tous ceux qui ont activement participé aux préparatifs de la visite CIS et pour leur soutien continu. La procédure menant à l accréditation a joué un rôle significatif dans la vie de l école, en renforçant notre souhait de promouvoir Haut-Lac en tant qu une seule entité avec une coopération régulière entre les sections pour une planification cohérente à tous les niveaux. La remise des Diplômes à nos 27 élèves de la Classe de 2012 a aussi été un moment important et émouvant. De même, la levée d oppositions par la commune et le Canton nous a donné le feu vert pour la suite de notre projet d extension à St-Légier. Tout ceci et bien plus encore nous font dire que 2012 était une bonne année pour Haut-Lac! Nous sommes fiers de constater que les motivations des parents à choisir notre école pour leurs enfants restent surtout la qualité de l enseignement et l offre d un vrai environnement bilingue. Whether you are a parent, an employee, a partner, a friend or someone interested in learning more about Haut-Lac, we hope that you enjoy reading this overview of the year Having spent 18 months preparing for the accreditation visit by representatives of the Council of International Schools, we were impatient to hear their conclusions. In May 2012 we were notified by the executive committee of the CIS of their decision to award fully accredited status to Haut-Lac International Bilingual School with immediate effect. Achieving accreditation represents a wonderful success for us, our employees and the whole community. We extend our sincere thanks once again to all those who actively participated in the preparations for the CIS visit and appreciate their continued support. The accreditation process itself played a significant role in the life of the school, as it reinforced our desire to promote and develop Haut-Lac as a whole, with regular cooperation and planning between sections and at all levels. Presenting the school-leaving certificates to the 27 students of our Class of 2012 was another important and emotional moment. We were also delighted when the lifting of oppositions by both commune and canton finally gave us the green light to advance with our project for a new campus in St-Légier. All this and much more besides means that 2012 was a good year for Haut-Lac! We are pleased to note that the motivating factors leading parents to choose our school for their children remain the quality of the teaching programme and the provision of a truly bilingual environment. 4 Quelques chiffres FACTS AND FIGURES Notre mission est de développer les ressources et le potentiel intellectuel de nos élèves, en leur donnant les moyens d apprendre mieux, plus vite et plus efficacement. Le véritable environnement international de Haut-Lac aide à viser cette ambition. NOMBRE D élèves (2012) Enfantine E1 - E3 (3 classes par niveau) Primaire P1 - P5 (3 classes par niveau) Secondaire La taille des groupes d enseignement varie selon les matières et les langues choisies par les élèves. Toutes les classes (MYP1-DP2) sont divisées en quatre groupes, chacun étant affilié à l une des quatre Maisons, dont les membres se retrouvent régulièrement pour entreprendre diverses activités ensemble. Ce système de tutorat renforce l esprit d équipe et assure le bien-être des élèves sur le plan individuel. MYP1 - MYP DP1 - DP Total de toutes les sections Langue principale parlée par nos étudiants et leurs familles - anglais (43%) et français (26%), puis espagnol (7%) et allemand (4%). En tout, 25 langues sont répertoriées auprès de nos familles comme première langue ; toutefois, nombre d entre eux parlent déjà plusieurs langues, avant même d entrer à Haut-Lac. En moyenne, 45 nationalités sont représentées parmi les élèves à travers les années, la majorité provenant du Royaume-Uni (17%), des Etats-Unis (14%), de Suisse (16%), de France (9%) et d Allemagne (5%). A peu près un cinquième des étudiants ont une double nationalité (la plupart avec la Suisse, le Royaume-Uni, les Etats- Unis ou la France). La proportion de filles et de garçons est d environ moitié moitié, bien que cela varie d une classe à l autre. Sur les 99 collaborateurs académiques, 52 sont britanniques ou irlandais, 17 sont français et 18 sont suisses. Les autres sont originaires de Belgique, Autriche, Espagne, Canada, Hollande, Italie, Suède et des Etats- Unis. Les 36 collaborateurs non-académiques sont principalement suisses (21), mais également de quelques autres pays européens. Our mission is to develop the resources and intellectual potential of the students, giving them the means to learn better, faster and more efficiently. The truly international environment of Haut-Lac helps to foster this ambition. STUDENT NUMBERS (2012) Infant E1 - E3 (3 classes per level) Primary P1 - P5 (3 classes per level) Secondary The teaching group sizes vary according to subject and language choices made by the students. Every class (MYP1-DP2) is divided into four Tutor Groups, each affiliated to one of the four Houses, whose members meet regularly and undertake various activities together. The Tutor system promotes a good team spirit and assures the pastoral care of the individual students. MYP1 - MYP DP1 - DP Total for all sections Main language spoken by our students and their families - English (43%) and French (26%), followed by Spanish (7%) and German (4%). In all, over 25 languages are listed by our families as being their first language. However, many already speak several languages, even before they arrive at Haut-Lac. About one in five students has dual nationality (mostly with Switzerland, the UK, the US or France). The remainder originate from Belgium, Austria, Spain, Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden and the United States. 5 ACCRéDITATION et affiliations ACCREDITATION AND MEMBERSHIPS ACCRÉDITATION PAR LE CIS La décision de demander une accréditation pour l école et ses programmes auprès du Council of International Schools a été prise au printemps Après une longue procédure d auto évaluation sur l organisation, l administration et l enseignement, une équipe du CIS composée de onze administrateurs et professeurs expérimentés issus d écoles internationales européennes est venue visiter Haut-Lac. Pendant une semaine, ils ont observé l école en action. Ils se sont réunis avec des groupes d élèves, de collaborateurs et de parents. Suite à l analyse par le comité exécutif du CIS des conclusions tirées de notre auto évaluation ainsi que du rapport de l équipe qui nous a rendu visite, la bonne nouvelle est arrivée en mai 2012 : Haut-Lac a obtenu avec succès l important sceau de qualité d une accréditation complète ( CIS ACCREDITATION The decision to seek accreditation for the school and its programmes by the Council of International Schools was taken in the spring of In March 2012, after a lengthy self-evaluation process covering all aspects of organisation, administration and teaching, Haut- Lac hosted a CIS Visiting Team of eleven experienced administrators and teachers drawn from other international schools across Europe. Over the course of a week they observed the school in action and met with representative groups of students, staff and parents. Following the assessment of the conclusions of our Self-Study and the Visiting Team s Report by the executive committee of CIS, news was received in May 2012 that Haut-Lac had successfully obtained this important seal of quality and been awarded full accreditation status. ( SGIS Swiss Group of International Schools qui assure des liens étroits entre enseignants, administrateurs et étudiants de ses 40 écoles membres par le développement professionnel (conférences annuelles, groupements d intérêts, mises à jour pédagogiques), ainsi que le partage d activités sportives et culturelles (tournois et compétitions SGIS). ( ADISR Association des Directeurs d Instituts de la Suisse Romande un groupe de 16 écoles internationales situées en Suisse romande et reliées par un charte qui promeut le sport au sein des écoles, encourageant l esprit d équipe et de fair-play dans les compétitions inter-écoles. ( SFPS/VSP/FSEP Fédération Suisse des Ecoles Privées qui a pour objectif d assurer que ses 260 écoles membres (locales, internationales, externats et pensionnats) fournissent un enseignement de qualité ainsi que le démontre leur accréditation, méritant ainsi la confiance des parents, des étudiants et des autorités fédérales. ( In addition to being fully authorised by the International Baccalaureate organisation ( to deliver its programmes at the Middle Years and Diploma level, Haut-Lac International Bilingual School is also a member of: AVDEP Association Vaudoise des Ecoles Privées which assists its 48 member schools to maintain, promote and develop quality and innovation in the field of private sector education through the provision of professional training opportunities for the management and staff, employment law advice and representation vis-à-vis official authorities. ( SGIS Swiss Group of International Schools which promotes closer links amongst teachers, administrators and students in its 40 member schools through professional development (annual conferences, interest groups, educational updates), as well as shared cultural and sporting activities (various SGIS Tournaments and Competitions). ( ADISR Association des Directeurs d Instituts de la Suisse Romande a group of 16 international schools located in western Switzerland that adhere to a charter which promotes sports within schools and fosters team values and fair-play in inter-school competitions. 6 LES FINANCES ET TENDANCES ÉCONOMIQUES Selon un article de presse publié par l AVDEP en novembre dernier, le nombre d élèves qui fréquentent, en tant qu externes, une école internationale dans le canton a diminué entre 2011 et Haut-Lac ainsi que d autres écoles de la région, ont noté une légère baisse du nombre d inscriptions pour les sections enfantines et primaires. Cependant, grâce à une augmentation au niveau du Secondaire, le total des inscriptions est resté stable avec environ 650 élèves. Par conséquent, la situation financière de l école reste saine et stable. Les dépenses anticipées liées au projet de l école Primaire à Praz Dagoud (St-Légier) ont été plus importantes que celles de l année précédente. Les coûts de la finalisation des diverses études nécessaires pour compléter les dossiers soumis pour la dernière enquête publique en septembre 2012 en font partie. FINANCE AND ECONOMIC TRENDS According to a press statement issued by AVDEP last November, the number of students attending international schools as day students in the canton has decreased overall between 2011 and In common with other schools in the region, Haut-Lac also noted a slight decrease in enrolments for the Infant and Primary sections. This was, however, coupled with an increase in numbers in the Secondary school, thus maintaining enrolment figures steady at around 650 students. Consequently the school s finances have continued to be healthy and stable. 7 INFORMATIQUE ET INTERNET IT SERVICES and Websites La plateforme informatique a été complètement rénovée pendant les vacances d été Après presque 10 ans de bons services, le système Windows XP a été remplacé par une plateforme incorporant un outil de gestion et de déploiement qui facilitera et accélérera les changements futurs. Presque 250 ordinateurs individuels, 150 applications et 13 configurations matérielles ont migré vers Windows 7 et Microsoft Office Afin de compléter la procédure, les plus vieux ordinateurs ont été remplacés tandis que les autres ont été mis à jour avec plus de mémoire et/ou un nouveau disque dur. Aussi pendant l année 2012, le département informatique a développé les capacités de PASS, la plateforme administrative de l école, surtout en ce qui concerne le suivi et la production de rapports sur le progrès des élèves. Ceci impliquait non seulement l innovation technique mais aussi l instruction des membres du personnel pour une optimisation de l utilisation du système. The school s IT platform was completely overhauled during the 2012 summer holidays. After almost 10 years of good service, the Windows XP system has been superseded by a platform incorporating a management and deployment tool that will facilitate and speed up any necessary changes in the future. No fewer than 250 individual computers, 150 applications and 13 material configurations were migrated to Windows 7 and Microsoft Office In order to complete the process, the oldest computers were replaced whilst the remainder were upgraded with extra memory and/or a new hard drive. The IT Department further extended the features of the school administration platform PASS during 2012, particularly with respect to tracking and reporting on student progress. This entailed not only technical innovation, but also the instruction of staff members in order to optimise the utilisation of the system. En 2012, un projet de mise à jour du design et du contenu du site internet public de l école www. haut- lac. ch a été initié avec finalisation prévue en début Dans un premier temps, notre site intranet www. haut- lac.net, créé pour nos familles et protégé par un mot de passe, a été remodelé et relancé avec un nouveau format selon les suggestions de nos parents, afin d être plus pratique et convivial. Il fournit toujours des informations générales courantes à propos de la vie de l école (les nouvelles, évènements actuels et futurs, le calendrier, les menus scolaires, les reportages sportifs, les galeries photos et d autres liens importants). Afin de compléter l information ci-dessus, la plupart des classes de l école Primaire ont tenu leur propre site internet contenant des renseignements spécifiques sur les objectifs du programme, les détails des devoirs et des délais, les lettres aux parents, des vidéos de projets et d activités, ainsi que des trucs amusants! In order to supplement the above, most of the Primary classes maintain their own websites, providing specific information about curriculum objectives, details of homework and deadlines, letters to parents, videos of projects and activities, as well as fun stuff! Thanks to these sites parents and students have a quick and simple means of keeping abreast of what is happening in their class. 8 MARKETING ET COMMUNICATION MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION L objectif marketing pour 2012 a été de mieux faire connaître Haut-Lac sur la Riviera et au-delà de la région de l est lémanique, augmentant à la fois la notoriété et la compréhension de l école et ses buts. Portes ouvertes En novembre, Haut-Lac a ouvert ses portes aux communautés locales et internationales. Les préparatifs ont impliqué enseignants, membres de l administration, bibliothécaires, personnel d entretien, ainsi que des étudiants et des membres de l APP. Des parents d enfants déjà scolarisés à Haut-Lac ont rejoint de nombreuses familles de la région qui ont profité de cette occasion pour visiter nos locaux, au Quai Maria Belgia et à St-Légier. À l école Primaire, des sections thématiques ont permis aux visiteurs de découvrir les activités sportives, les compétitions et les clubs, l internationalisme, l apprentissage de la lecture chez les petits et leur créativité au sein de Haut- Lac en général, à l aide de présentoirs, d échanges et d ateliers pratiques. Sur le campus Secondaire, les programmes du BI ont été expliqués, le club de cuisine a préparé un buffet tandis que les professeurs d éducation physique ont invité les plus jeunes visiteurs à des jeux d équipes. Les inscriptions reçues à l issue de cette journée ont récompensé les efforts, mais le plus remarquable a été l ambiance joyeuse et la fierté avec laquelle la communauté de Haut-Lac a partagé son expérience si riche. Évènements marketing Fort du succès de sa participation au Leman Expat Fair en 2011, Haut-Lac était de nouveau présent en Aux côtés d Haut-Lac International Centre, l école a tenu un stand double au Palais de Beaulieu à Lausanne, distribuant de brochures et des petits cadeaux aux quelques centaines de visiteurs de l exposition, qui regroupait non seulement des écoles mais également d autres services et produits adressés aux nouveaux et anciens expatriés. ( The marketing focus for 2012 was to raise the profile of Haut-Lac along the Riviera and beyond the eastern Lake Geneva region, increasing both awareness and understanding of the school and its aims. Open Day In November, Haut-Lac opened its doors to the local and international communities. The preparations involved teachers, members of the administration, librarians, maintenance and housekeeping staff, as well as several groups of students and members of the PTA. A combination of parents with children currently enrolled in the school and numerous families from the area took the opportunity to visit our premises, both at Quai Maria Belgia and in St-Légier. In the Primary school thematic sections enabled visitors to find out about sport, competitions and clubs, internationalism, reading in the Early Years and creativity at Haut-Lac in general, with displays, talks and hands-on opportunities. On the Secondary campus the IB programmes were explained, the cookery club provided sustenance and the PE teachers encouraged the younger visitors to join in some team games. The fact that the days efforts resulted in some enrolments was gratifying, but most notable and noticed was the cheerful atmosphere and the air of pride with which the Haut-Lac community shared its wealth of experience. Marketing Events Following the success of its participation in the Leman Expat Fair 2011, Haut-Lac registered again for the 2012 event. Together with the Haut-Lac International Centre, the school occupied a double stand in the exhibition halls of the Palais de Beaulieu in Lausanne, distributing brochures and giveaways to many of the hundreds of visitors to the fair, which featured not only schools but many other services and products of interest to expats old and new. 9 Médias sociaux En 2012, Haut-Lac s est lancé sur Facebook afin de propager rapidement de nouveaux éléments d ordre général et d encourager l implication des parents par une plate-forme de partage de commentaires spontanés, de suggestions et d opinions. L APP de Haut-Lac a lancé sa propre page Facebook en plus de son site existant, publiant des évènements et faisant la promotion des activités de ce groupe. Publications La Rétrospective 2011 ayant été très appréciée par les parents, les amis, les entreprises et les agents de relocation, le concept de ce rapport annuel va dorénavant être intégré au plan de communication de Haut-Lac. Des dépliants promouvant l école ont été distribués avec des présentoirs assortis dans des endroits comme les offices de tourisme, les hôtels et les cabinets médicaux. Enfin, une petite brochure a été imprimée pour célébrer l obtention de l accréditation CIS qui détaillait les bénéfices pour l école, ainsi que pour les parents et les élèves, d avoir effectué ce processus d évaluation. Social Networking In 2012 Haut-Lac ventured onto Facebook in order to quickly disseminate news items of a general nature and to encourage parent involvement by providing a platform for the spontaneous sharing of comments, suggestions and opinions. The Haut-Lac PTA launched its own Facebook page in addition to the existing website, publicising events and promoting interest in the activities of this group. Publications The Retrospective 2011 proved popular with parents, friends, company contacts and relocation personnel and the concept of an annual report will, therefore, continue to feature on the Haut-Lac communications plan. Leaflets with matching display boxes to publicise the school in locations such as tourist offices, hotels and doctors surgeries were created. Finally, a small brochure was printed to celebrate the award of CIS accreditation which detailed the benefits to the school, as well as its parents and students, of having undergone this evaluation process. Publicité Haut-Lac a communiqué sous forme de publicités et de publi-reportages dans différents magazines et journaux locaux et a lancé une campagne d affichage de Lausanne jusqu à Villeneuve pendant l automne. En outre, l école apparaît régulièrement sur les écrans LED aux entrées est et ouest de Vevey. Quelques semaines avant les Portes Ouvertes, elle était présente sur les écrans de quelques offices de poste et centres commerciaux. Advertising In addition to placing advertisements and advertorials in several magazines and newspapers issued locally, Haut-Lac undertook a billboard campaign ranging from Lausanne to Villeneuve in the autumn. Furthermore, our school featured regularly on the LED screens at the eastern and western entrances to Vevey. 10 PROGRAMME AcADéMIque ACADEMIC PROGRAMME MEILLEURES PRATIQUES DE L ENSEIGNEMENT BILINGUE Haut-Lac vise à fournir un enseignement de la plus haute qualité pour les enfants dans son domaine. Dans le cadre d un programme académique exigeant et centré sur les étudiants, l école s attache à créer un environnement bilingue stimulant dès les premières classes. Dans le but d optimiser la qualité et l efficacité de l enseignement bilingue, un nouveau système a été testé dans les classes P5 dès septembre 2012 : 1 jour / 1 jour (anglais/français) plutôt qu ½ jour / ½ jour (matin/après-midi). BEST PRACTICE IN BILINGUAL TEACHING Haut-Lac aims to provide an education of the highest quality for the children in its care. Within the framework of an academically challenging and student-centred programme, the school therefore strives to create a stimulating bilingual environment starting from the youngest classes. In the constant endeavour to optimise the quality and effectiveness of the bilingual teaching, a new system was trialed in the P5 bilingual classes from September 2012: 1 day/1 day (English/French) instead of ½ day / ½ day (morning/afternoon). The expected benefits included: Achievement of a more efficient distribution of the subjects taught during the course of a day, Improved attentiveness from the children working in the same language all day, Equal weight and value given to both languages, Fewer room changes on a given day since the children do not move between teachers, Lighter school bags containing books in only one language each day. Following extremely positive feedback from the teachers, the parents and the children, the implementation of the one day / one day bilingual programme will be extended to the other Primary classes from September 2013, and introduced in the Infant classes thereafter. DEVELOPPEMENTS DU PROGRAMME PPCS Réunissant rigueur académique et défi individuel, le Programme du Premier Cycle Secondaire du Baccalauréat International (IBPPCS) a pour objectif de soutenir les écoles dans le développement d apprenants autodirigés, autogérés, autorégulés, indépendants et autonomes. Haut-Lac Ecole Internationale Bilingue a reçu l autorisation d offrir le programme du PPCS pour la première fois en Il est enseigné en anglais et en français à plus de 200 élèves de 11 à 16 ans et mène à l obtention du Certificat du PPCS à la fin de MYP5. Nos élèves peuvent être fiers de leurs résultats : un taux de succès de 100% lors des trois dernières années. De plus, ils recoivent régulièrement des notes au-dessus de la moyenne mondiale. Jusqu à ce jour, la note la plus élevée atteinte est de 59 points sur un maximum de 63. L organisation du BI introduit en ce moment des changements au programme du PPCS qui amélioreront ses points forts et permettront à plus d écoles d offrir le même programme dans des contextes culturels et éducatifs différents. L intention est aussi de mieux aligner le PPCS avec les deux autres programmes du BI (Primaire et Diplôme) afin d assurer une meilleure cohérence et continuité entre eux. Il existe déjà un nouveau guide et des nouveaux critères pour deux des sujets, Acquisition de Langues (ex Langue B) et Individus et Sociétés (ex Sciences Humaines). Les autres seront mis à jour pour septembre DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MYP PROGRAMME Combining academic rigour and individual challenge, the Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) aims to support schools in developing students who are self-directed, self-managed, self-regulated, independent and autonomous learners. Haut-Lac International Bilingual School was first authorised to offer the IB Middle Years Programme in It is taught in English and French to over 200 students aged 11 to 16, leading up to the acquisition of the MYP Certificate at the end of MYP5. Our students can be proud of their results, having achieved a 100% success rate over the last three years and consistently obtaining grades above the world average. The highest score reached to date has been 59 points out of a possible 63. The IB organisation is currently introducing changes to the design of the MYP which will serve to enhance existing strengths and enable more schools to offer the programme within the framework of different cultures and educational contexts. The intention is also to align the MYP more closely with the other IB programmes (PYP and DP) to provide greater coherence and continuity between them. 11 Class of 2012 mises à jour du DIPLÔME DU BI La révision des guides pour le contenu et l exécution du programme du diplôme du BI se fait régulièrement, en général tous les 7 ans. Un changement majeur dans l évaluation des Arts Visuels du DP est entré en vigueur à la rentrée académique Afin d assurer que les professeurs soient toujours tenus au courant des derniers développements et fort de ses liens étroits avec les écoles BI suisses, Haut-Lac a pris l initiative d organiser un atelier d une journée entière sur cette nouvelle méthode d évaluation. Ces réunions montrent que le partage de connaissances, d expertises et de meilleures pratiques est essentiel pour la création d un réseau naturel de soutien entre collègues. Les commentaires unanimement favorables des 30 spécialistes en arts visuels qui sont venus depuis 20 écoles différentes en Suisse (plus 2 professeurs de l Ecole Internationale de Bruxelles) ont renforcé la pertinence de cet évènement. Les écoles IB suisses organisent régulièrement ce genre d ateliers et le prochain traitera des changements au programme de la Théorie de la Connaissance. IB DIPLOMA UPDATES Reviews of the guidelines for the content and delivery of the IB Diploma Programme also occur regularly, typically on a 7-year cycle. A key change in the manner of assessment in DP Visual Arts was announced for the academic year starting in Committed to ensuring that its teachers are kept up to date with developments as and when they occur, and building on its strong links with many Swiss IB schools, Haut-Lac took the initiative to organise a one-day workshop with a focus on the new assessment model. Such meetings recognise that the sharing of knowledge, expertise and best practice is invaluable, creating a natural network of colleagues for mutual support. The attendance of 30 Visual Arts specialists from 20 schools across Switzerland (and a further 2 teachers from the International School of Brussels) was testament to the relevance of the event, as was the uniformly complimentary feedback from the participants. Swiss IB schools regularly host workshops of this kind and the next one will consider changes relating to the Theory of Knowledge course. In Haut-Lac we remain focused on the development of teaching skills and new strategies to best meet the needs of our diverse student body, with an emphasis on second language learners and the promotion of bilingualism. From January to June 2012 a group of Primary and Secondary teachers followed an advanced course about teaching EAL learners in the mainstream classroom. This included workshops, essays, reflections and practical classroom studies aimed at raising awareness of the needs of additional language learners across the school. ( In April, Dr Neil MacKay, a well-known UK-based consultant and trainer, presented workshops on the concept of Total teaching - meeting the needs of all learners to the entire academic staff, encouraging closer engagement with learners of all styles, ages and abilities. In November, Luke Abbott and Julia Walshaw, advanced skills teachers of the Mantle of the Expert method, introduced the Infant and Primary staff to this drama based inquiry approach to teaching and learning through a training session followed by practical classroom demonstrations. ( In addition, workshops were presented throughout the year by members of our own staff, who were able to share their expertise with colleagues on topics such as Learning to Learn, Phonics and Inquiry-Based Learning. Teachers regularly attended interest group meetings organised by other SGIS member schools, as well as formal training workshops for the IB Programmes (MYP and DP) at different locations abroad. Haut- Lac s Infant section took up membership of the ELFS (Early Learning Friends), a group of Kindergarten and Pre-school teachers representing some of the main international schools in Switzerland who have recognised the need for regular job-alike sessions on a variety of topics e.g. Music and movement for young children. There have also been professional development opportunities for other members of staff: Workshops for the Senior Leadership Team with a trainer from ICP (Intervention de Crise et Prévention) in Lausanne to elaborate the school s crisis management policies; From Library to MYP Media Hub, an IB workshop aimed at international school librarians and hosted in Portugal in November; Visits to various workshops and establishments of higher education to enrich the Higher Education Counseling programme; On-site training in the use of the ABACUS salaries and accounting programme for the HR and Accounts team; Regular French and English classes to promote the second language skills of Haut-Lac employees who are not already fully bilingual. 12 Retrospective 2012 Your children, our expertise, their future

13 Le diplôme du BI et au-delà THE IB DIPLOMA AND BEYOND En tant qu école, Haut-Lac soutient le programme du Diplôme du Baccalauréat International et sa rigueur académique. Tous les étudiants sont invités à se présenter aux examens du BI, comme beaucoup l ont déjà fait depuis le passage du premier groupe de 8 candidats en Un peu plus de la moitié des 118 Diplômes remis aux étudiants de Haut-Lac entre 2006 et 2012 sont bilingues, démontrant le fait que les candidats ont passé les épreuves à la fois en français et en anglais. Ensemble, ils ont obtenu un score moyen de 31.3 points, régulièrement au-dessus de la moyenne mondiale pour la même période. As a school, Haut-Lac promotes the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme and its academic rigour. All students are encouraged to sit for the IB examinations and have been given the opportunity to do so since the first cohort of 8 passed through DP2 in Just over half of the 118 Diplomas awarded to Haut- Lac students between 2006 and 2012 were classed as bilingual, reflecting the fact that the candidates took their subject examinations in a combination of French and English. Between them they achieved an average score of 31.3 points, consistently above the world average for the corresponding period. 14 SPORTS SPORTS Les succès sportifs des élèves de Haut-Lac lors de nos évènements et ceux d autres écoles ont été audelà de nos attentes en 2012 grâce sans doute aux efforts infaillibles de leurs talentueux et attentionnés professeurs, le dévouement et la camaraderie des élèves et le soutien constant des parents. Aux côtés des autres membres de SGIS et ADISR, Haut-Lac a organisé, à son tour, des jeux inter-écoles compétitifs et amicaux sur une série de disciplines sportives. Chaque année civile commence avec d intenses compétitions de ski. Le manque de neige a empêché les équipes de Haut-Lac de s entraîner comme ils l auraient voulu avant d attaquer et d organiser le premier slalom inter-écoles de la saison 2012 à Morgins. De janvier à mars, des écoles de toute la Suisse se sont défiées pour se classer dans les championnats de ski et de snowboard. Les performances individuelles et en équipe des coureurs de Primaire et Secondaire étaient une source de fièreté pour Haut-Lac. Lors de la dernière compétition de ski junior et senior de la saison, Haut- Lac a reçu le prix accordé à la meilleure école dans le classement général. Les défis sportifs ont continué au printemps et jusqu aux vacances d été. Les élèves de Haut-Lac ont participé à des compétitions de badminton, de netball (un nouveau sport pour les P5), d athlétisme et de natation, contre des écoles de la région mais aussi de Zurich, Bâle et Zoug/Lucerne. L équipe de natation du Primaire, en constant progrès depuis plusieurs saisons, s est révélée en Elle a remporté de nombreuses médailles et trophées grâce à d excellentes performances en brasse, crawl et dos crawlé. The sporting successes of Haut-Lac students at events hosted and attended by our school exceeded expectations in This was undoubtedly due to the hard work put in by their talented and caring teachers, the dedication and camaraderie amongst the students, and the steady support of the parents. Along with the other member schools of SGIS and ADISR, Haut-Lac took its turn to organise competitive and friendly inter-school games in a range of sporting activities. Each calendar year begins with an intense series of ski competitions. Lack of snow meant that the Haut- Lac teams underwent less preparatory training than they would have liked before taking to the slopes and hosting the first inter-school races of the 2012 season in Morgins. The fixtures continued as schools from around Switzerland jostled for position on the ski and snowboarding league tables between January and March. Both Primary and Secondary individual competitors and teams did Haut-Lac proud and consistently featured on the winners podium. At the last combined junior and senior race of the season, Haut-Lac finished as best school overall. The sporting challenges continued throughout the spring and into the summer as Haut-Lac students took part in badminton, netball (a new sport for P5), athletics and swimming, meeting with other international schools not only locally, but also in Zurich, Basel and Zug/Lucerne. The Primary swimming team which had been developing steadily over a number of seasons became a force to be reckoned with in 2012, bringing in many medals and trophies for freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.
