1 Department of Modern Languages Course : FRE 3780 FRENCH PHONETICS Semester : Fall 2014 Hours: TU/TR: 2:00-3:15 p.m. Location: Graham Center (GC 288) Prof : Jean-Robert Cadely, Ph.D. Office hours: TU/TR : 11:00-12:00 p.m. Labor Center (LC) 324) Phone : cadelyj@fiu.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is for students who have completed Intermediate French or have equivalent proficiency. It begins with an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet and a systematic inventory of the sounds of French. After looking at some general concepts concerning the pronunciation of French (enchaînement, liaison, intonation), we will study the vowels, the semi-vowels, and consonants systematically with particular attention to nasal and mid-vowels. We will learn the basic of articulatory phonetics and use exercises to help in the pronunciation of each sound of French. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the end of this course, students should: - develop proficiency in phonetically transcribing oral and written texts in French - have a firm grasp of basic linguistic concepts and articulatory phonetics to take advanced courses in French linguistics - have an excellent understanding of variation in French sound system - be able to show improvement in their pronunciation of French with particular attention to accuracy of nasal vowels, front rounded vowels, intonation mute-e and liaison. CLASS PROCEDURES Each class will be divided into lecture, written work (transcription), oral work (pronunciation), and occasionally films, songs, and other excerpts illustrating the diversity of the French language (français de France, français du Québec, français des Antilles, etc.). Students will be expected to learn the Phonetic Alphabet by heart and to do the written exercises. Homework, indicated on the syllabus, is assigned for each class and will be collected and graded. Students will also be expected to practice the corrective and refinement exercises either at home, in the library, or in the language lab before each class. These exercises are also indicated on the syllabus. Students will be asked to read dialogues, poems, etc. in class. Pronunciation should show improvement throughout the semester. GRADING CRITERIA - Homework (10%). Transcription homework is assigned for each class. - Participation (10%). All students are expected to participate in class exercises, both oral and written. Attendance is very important. Each absence over three (excused or

2 unexcused) will automatically lower your final grade. There will be no make-up tests. - Petits examens de prononciation et dictées (10%). There will be 5 short phonetic dictations and pronunciation tests in class (indicated on the syllabus). - Enregistrements (10%). Students will be asked to make two recordings (poems) of yourself reading French during the semester. - Examens (60%). There will be three in-class exams (indicated on the syllabus). Exams will involve: transcription of oral and written texts into phonetic notation (alphabet phonétique), auditory discrimination, articulatory description, and essay questions on linguistic concepts studied in class.
